I certainly wouldn’t pay to do it, but there’s at least a chance I’ll sit across the Pier Friday night for Dennis DeYoung. Do you have any idea how many times I’ve watched Styx: Behind The Music?

I was sitting around cracking crabs Sunday when a Lil’ Wayne tune came on Pandora. I was reminded of how much Mr. Weezy can make things…

I’m HONESTLY debating getting in the car Tuesday night, driving the two hours or so to Fairfax (might be more like 3 given traffic) and taking in the iconic pipes of Chris Cornell. Dude is an icon…

Remember when ESPN attempted to convince us that everyone in the world would be watching/playing/caring about/paying attention to poker a few years ago?

Umm….how’d that work out?

Despite the fact that no one seems to care anymore, they’re going to provide their lengthiest/most in-depth coverage of the event ever this year. That’s good news, as I was struggling to answer the question “what am I going to not watch on TV this week?” with something besides NASCAR or golf.

Want me to watch? Try “World Series of Strip Poker” with Lais Ribeiro (thanks Guyism). I won’t guarantee I’ll watch, but I’m much more likely…

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens (11-4) returned to practice Thursday at 1 Winning Drive, continuing preparations for Sunday’s regular season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals (4-11) at M&T Bank Stadium.

LB Tavares Gooden missed a second straight day of practice Thursday, he dislocated his shoulder in the Ravens’ Week 16 win over the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison said Thursday he thought Gooden would try to get on the field Sunday.

“He’ll try to if the doctors gave him the okay” said Mattison. “Tavares Gooden will do anything he can do to play, there’s no question. That’s like everybody on our defense. They know how important this game is.”

With a win and a Pittsburgh Steelers loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Ravens would clinch the AFC North title and a first round bye in the AFC playoffs.

S Tom Zbikowski (back) also did not participate in practice Thursday. Zbikowski has not played since being forced to leave the team’s Week 14 win over the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium in the first half. Head Coach John Harbaugh said Monday he did not expect the safety to be available for Sunday’s game.

S Ed Reed (neck) and LB Prescott Burgess (illness) did not practice Thursday either, neither is believed to be at risk of missing Sunday’s game.

WR/KR David Reed (wrist/head) was a limited participant Thursday, he’s on track to play Sunday for the first time since suffering a concussion in the team’s Week 15 win over the New Orleans Saints.

The Bengals announced Thursday (via Twitter) WR Chad Ochocinco (ankle) will not make the trip to Charm City.

Three other Bengals did not participate in practice Thursday. TE Jermaine Gresham (knee), CB Johnathan Joseph (ankle) and LB Dan Skuta (back) were not on the practice field.

RB Bernard Scott (toe) was a limited participant for the Bengals Thursday, DE Carlos Dunlap (shoulder) was a full participant.

Live From Owings Mills: Ray Lewis says Ravens Won’t Suffer “Letdown” vs. Bengals

Posted on 16 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens continued work Thursday at 1 Winning Drive. They’re in preparation for a Sunday afternoon AFC North showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Ravens are coming off a very emotional victory to open the season against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football. LB Ray Lewis told reporters Thursday the win would be remembered by young players in the Ravens locker room “for the rest of their lives.” Even a future Hall of Famer like Lewis admitted that the win was special, adding that “playing against your old Defensive Coordinator (Rex Ryan), you can’t win a game like that and not put it on your top shelf.”

But when asked if winning a particularly emotional game in Week 1 could lead to an unfortunate letdown in Week 2; the Pro Bowl LB was quick to shoot down the concept. “There’s not a natural letdown” said Lewis, adding “not when you got swept by the Bengals last year. The Bengals are a very quality opponent, and we’ve got to go in and have our game ready.”

Lewis touched on a number of other subjects during his 10 minute gathering with Charm City reporters. He said he acts as a “big brother” for Cincy WR Chad Ochocinco, and has told him to “calm it down” sometimes when it comes to the receiver’s antics on Twitter, TV and elsewhere. Lewis also praised Ochocinco, saying “I think he just loves the game.” Lewis discussed the excitement of his 4th quarter hit on Jets TE Dustin Keller, describing it as being “like a quarterback throwing a big touchdown.”

Lewis also discussed his son Ray Lewis III’s recent 504 yard game at Lake Mary Prep (Florida), saying “my kids put pressure on me now”, and asking “how do I show up 500 yards?”

Lewis’ entire chat with reporters can be heard in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net; Thyrl Nelson caught up with Ray Lewis III Thursday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”, that chat can also be heard in the Audio Vault.

INJURY UPDATE: TE Todd Heap (shoulder) returned to practice Thursday; he missed Wednesday’s practice while recovering from a shoulder strain suffered Monday night in East Rutherford. He told reporters he was progressing and hoped to be ready to play Sunday. Heap was listed as being a “limited” participant in practice.

DT Terrence Cody (knee) practiced again Thursday as he continues to work his way back from an August 31 knee procedure. Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison told reporters Cody was “close” to being ready to play. Cody was again listed as “limited.”

LB Jarret Johnson (back) did not practice Thursday after being listed as “limited” Wednesday. LB Ray Lewis (foot) was a limited participant for a 2nd straight day Thursday. Lewis said “I’m good” when asked about the injury earlier in the day. WR Anquan Boldin (thigh) was also listed as “limited” for a 2nd straight day.

LB’s Tavares Gooden (thigh) and Jameel McClain (knee) were each listed as limited Thursday, neither injury is believed to be series. WR Marcus Smith (knee) was a full participant for a 2nd straight day.

WR Donte’ Stallworth (foot) and OT Jared Gaither (back) have been ruled out of Sunday’s game by the team. Gaither told reporters he’s feeling “pretty good” and “recovering great”, but wouldn’t commit to a timetable for return. S Ed Reed (groin/hip) is on the team’s Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, he joked with reporters that he had called the NFLPA to try to get off the list.

For the Bengals, DE Jonathan Fanene (hamstring) missed practice for a 2nd straight day; while LB Keith Rivers (foot) was upgraded to limited participation. RB Cedric Benson (shoulder), WR Andre Caldwell (groin), CB Brandon Ghee (head) and RB Brian Leonard (foot) were all listed as full participants.

NOTES: Hear from Lewis, Mattison, Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron, Special Teams Coordinator Jerry Rosburg, Gaither, Reed and CB Prince Miller NOW in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net……S Haruki Nakamura joined Rex Snider Thursday after on “The Afternoon Drive”, you can hear that chat in the Audio Vault as well. P Sam Koch is scheduled to join Drew Forrester on “The Morning Reaction” Friday morning at 7:00am on AM1570……The Ravens will practice again Friday, with Head Coach John Harbaugh scheduled to speak to the media following practice. The team will release their final Injury Report Friday afternoon, hold a walkthrough Saturday, then travel to the Queen City Saturday night.

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 16 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because “Boomer Sooner” passed along a very interesting video to me last night. Apparently there is a new store in Times Square called “Pop-Tarts World”, and the folks over at Slate took the opportunity to think up some new Pop-Tarts recipes.

(You can see the video here or check my Facebook page-just search “Glenn Clark” and add the fella who has a picture of a duckpin bowling lane that says “I (heart) Glenn.”)

One of their new recipes is a “Pop-Tarts BLT.” That’s right, a BLT using Brown Sugar Cinnamon Pop-Tarts as bread. This is why America > anywhere else in the free world. It looks AMAZING…

blt

Someone get one of those things for Rex Ryan for sure!

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens dismiss CB Bryan McCann, re-sign CB Prince Miller

Which goes back to my original thought regarding the entire McCann-Miller roster decision. Remember that thought? I believe it went something like…

“HUH????”

The issue here is clearly that the Ravens are concerned with Tom Zbikowski as punt returner. When they let Prince Miller go after the final cuts, they had decided that Miller wasn’t quite ready to be a cornerback at the NFL level. However, with Zbikowski REALLY hurting the Ravens in the 2nd half of their win over the New York Jets Monday night; they needed an insurance policy in the back.

Miller gives them that insurance policy.

The issue is that because they had to sign Miller off of the New England Patriots’ practice squad, they have to commit to keeping him on the active roster for three weeks. Therefore when Cary Williams returns from suspension next week, Miller can’t be the player that gets moved.

Instead, players like Ken Hamlin, Jason Phillips, Arthur Jones, Lamar Divens, Marcus Smith and David Reed will be sweating a bit.

2. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Todd Heap didn’t practice; Ray Lewis, Anquan Boldin, Terrence Cody, Jarret Johnson limited

Of this group, I wouldn’t be particularly concerned about Lewis, Boldin or Johnson. These are guys that probably could have practiced fully had the team played on Sunday instead of taking the field for Monday Night Football.

Heap is at least somewhat concerning. John Harbaugh said Tuesday he thought Heap would return to practice Wednesday, but clearly that didn’t happen. Heap told reporters Wednesday he didn’t know if he’d be able to play Sunday. It doesn’t appear to be a long-term concern, but it certainly could affect how dynamic the Ravens are able to be offensively on Sunday.

Should Heap not be able to go, it will be a big opportunity for rookies Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta to make an impact.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Cody hopes to play Sunday vs. Bengals

Cody said he thought he could play on Sunday, but he needs to get back into game shape in order to be ready. Brandon McKinney especially played well in his place Monday night against the New York Jets. Should Cody play, it would be likely that Divens would be inactive.

If the Ravens REALLY need help on the D-Line, I would suggest they at least consider Shay Maria. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

shaymaria

4. Cincinnati Enquirer’s Joe Reedy says Houshmandzadeh finds return to Queen City ‘exciting’

And before we move on from the (on field) Ravens, a couple of things…

-Rex Snider wants Chad Ochocinco to fly him out to watch Sunday’s game at Paul Brown Stadium. He’s offered to dress up like Ines Sainz to try to convince #85 that he deserves the chance to go. You should Tweet Chad and tell him to let Rex make the trip. Something tells me Rex might not be quite the same as Ines…

ines

-The Ravens return to practice today at 1 Winning Drive. We’ll be live from Owings Mills with all relevant notes from practice and media availability today. We’re scheduled to hear from coordinators Greg Mattison, Cam Cameron and Jerry Rosburg; as well as LB Ray Lewis.

Make sure you’re tuned in with Thyrl Nelson and Rex today for live Ravens Reports; follow us on Twitter (@WNST), and check things out at WNST.net.

5. Yahoo! Sports’ Cameron Smith says Ray Lewis’ son had big prep game in Florida

And Ray Lewis III-the Lake Mary Prep star is scheduled to join Thyrl Nelson at 1pm today on “The Mobtown Sports Beat” to talk about his huge game. Make sure you don’t miss it!

Thyrl’s first question almost sorta has to be…”Do you use the same deodorant as your dad???”

6. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Brad Bergesen outdueled Kyle Drabek as Orioles swept Toronto Blue Jays at Oriole Park at Camden Yards

What did you expect? A loss? These are the Birds we’re talking about! They don’t lose!

Hell-even I poked at the game for a minute last night. I probably would have poked at a few more minutes of the game-but the thing was over in about 40.

Brad Bergesen was outstanding last night. In fact, I think I’ve totally come around on Brad Bergesen. I was never sold on guaranteeing him a spot in the rotation next season-but I’m starting to think he joins Brian Matusz and Jeremy Guthrie as locks. Kevin Millwood clearly won’t be back, and I’m not sure Jake Arrieta has guaranteed himself a spot-although I’m not convinced Andy MacPhail will go out and get pitchers that are much better.

That is the million dollar question however. Will Andy MacPhail make the few moves necessary to give this team a REAL chance to win? We’ll find out.

7. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of loss

Bergesen’s line? CG, ER, 7H, 3K, 0BB. Not too bad.

Also, Brian Roberts was 2-4 with a double and a run scored and Matt Wieters went 1-2 with a walk and a run scored.

As is our new custom, go look at the numbers. When you get back, Johanna Lundback will be waiting for you. (Thanks Guyism!)

lundback

8. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says Buck Showalter undecided on whether to give Jake Arrieta another start

Before we move on from the O’s, a couple of things…

-Great story at MLB.com today, as the Rochester Red Wings honored Orioles’ World Series-winning manager Joe Altobelli earlier this month with a statue in his honor. Altobelli is an icon in Rochester, but should be remembered fondly in Charm City as well. ”

-After wrapping their 3 game series with the Jays, the O’s are off today before opening up a weekend set with the New York Yankees tomorrow night at OPACY. Millwood, Guthrie and Chris Tillman are slated to go for the Birds, AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte are slated to go for the Bombers.

9. CSNWashington.com’s Patrick Stevens says Jamarr Robinson, Danny O’Brien will both keep playing for Terps

As Drew Forrester and I discussed this morning, I believe Ralph Friedgen is playing both QB’s due to the loyalty he has for his upperclassmen. Eventually, I think the Fridge will have to go with O’Brien-as I really believe O’Brien gives the Terrapins a better chance to win ACC games.

Did you miss West Virginia coach Bill Stewart previewing Saturday’s showdown against Maryland with Drew on “The Morning Reaction” this morning on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today here at WNST.net to check it out!

Some other things you can find in the Audio Vault include:

 • Ryan Fagan (Sporting News)-who went around MLB with Drew Thursday morning
 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports)-who talked all things NFL with Drew Thursday morning
 • Brett Adams (Stevenson University AD)-who talked about the Mustangs with Drew Thursday morning
 • Dan Wetzel (Yahoo! Sports)-who was at Ravens/Jets Monday night and discussed both teams with Thyrl Wednesday
 • Matt Bowen (National Football Post)-who talked football football football with Rex Wednesday afternoon
 • All sorts of audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday-including John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Anquan Boldin and TJ Houshmandzadeh.

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so your day is set. Yep, I’m THAT good to you.

10. Annapolis Capital’s Bill Wagner says Kriss Proctor working with starters, but Ricky Dobbs still likely to start for Navy vs. Louisiana Tech

Midshipmen head coach Ken Niumatalolo joins Rex Snider this afternoon at 2:30 on “The Afternoon Drive”, so we’ll find out everything we need to know about the Mids’ QB situation.

If they REALLY need QB help in Annapolis, I think they should consider Amy Jackson. (Thanks The Beer Goggler via Busted Coverage!)

amyjackson

And finally, I leave you with this.

How is it that I hadn’t heard about “Spike Can Dance” on YouTube until yesterday?!?!?!?!

Live From Owings Mills: Ravens Bring Back Prince Miller, Prepare for Bengals

Posted on 15 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens returned to work Wednesday at 1 Winning Drive, beginning preparations for Sunday afternoon’s battle with the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Ravens made a roster move Wednesday, re-signing CB Prince Miller. Miller had been on the practice squad with the New England Patriots. Miller was an undrafted free agent out of Georgia who originally made the Ravens’ final 53 man roster following a strong Training Camp and preseason. He was released September 5 to make room for CB Bryan McCann on the active roster. Coming full circle, the Ravens released McCann Wednesday to make room for Miller on the roster.

Miller will have a chance to get involved in returning punts, as head coach John Harbaugh admitted Tuesday that Tom Zbikowski’s performance was “disappointing” in the role Monday night in the Ravens’ win over the New York Jets. Harbaugh said Wednesday “there is a chance” Miller will take over punt return duties, but didn’t know if the rookie would be ready to do that Sunday. Harbaugh said of Miller and Zbikowski “one of them will be back there” against Cincinnati.

The Ravens will have to keep Miller on the active roster for at least three weeks due to the NFL rules for signing players from other another team’s practice squad. When CB Cary Williams returns from suspension next week the team will have to make another roster move to get down to 53 players.

CODY HOPES TO PLAY: DT Terrence Cody told reporters today he “should be able to play” Sunday after missing the Monday Night Football tilt at New Meadowlands Stadium.

Cody is recovering from a minor knee procedure he underwent August 31 to repair damage to a slightly torn meniscus. Cody said the knee is “getting better”, but he wants to “get a lot of reps” in practice this week.

Harbaugh did not expect to have Cody on the practice field Wednesday afternoon-but Cody did indeed participate. When asked if the team’s 2nd selection in the NFL Draft would be able to play Sunday, Harbaugh admitted “I don’t know.”

HOUSHMANDZADEH REFLECTS ON RETURN
: WR TJ Houshmandzadeh spent a formal session with reporters Wednesday, reflecting on his first visit to Cincinnati after spending eight years (seven seasons) in the Queen City.

When asked about how it will feel to dress in and enter from the visitor’s locker room at Paul Brown Stadium, Houshmandzadeh admitted “it will be different.” Houshmandzadeh said he didn’t know what kind of reaction he would get from the fans in Cincinnati, but said he would “expect the worts, hope for the best.” Houshmandzadeh believed his role as a constant underdog early in his career could help fans feel “apathy” towards him.

Houshmandzadeh gave credit to Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, noting “Marvin stuck by me when I was hurt (in 2003)”. He said that without Lewis, he might not still be in the NFL at this point.

Houshmandzadeh said he “wanted to stay” in Cincinnati after the 2008 season, but his “mind was kind of clouded” at the time.

INJURY REPORT: The Ravens have announced that OT Jared Gaither (back) and WR Donte’ Stallworth will not play Sunday.

On Wednesday, TE Todd Heap (shoulder) did not participate in practice. LB Ray Lewis (foot), WR Anquan Boldin (thigh), Cody (knee) and LB Jarret Johnson (back) were all limited participants. LB Jameel McClain (knee) and WR Marcus Smith (knee) fully participated in practice.

For the Bengals, DE Jonathan Fanene (hamstring) and LB Keith Rivers (foot) did not participate in practice. RB Cedric Benson (shoulder) was a limited participant. WR Andre Caldwell (groin), CB Brandon Ghee (head) and RB Brian Leonard (foot) were all full participants.

NOTES: The Ravens will not practice until 3:40pm, as Harbaugh wants to give them more rest after returning from East Rutherford late Monday night/early Tuesday morning……Hear from Harbaugh, QB Joe Flacco and Boldin NOW in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net……Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco talked to Baltimore media members via conference call Wednesday. Ochocinco declined to discuss his recent Twitter “battle” with Ravens RB’s Willis McGahee and Le’Ron McClain; saying he only wanted to talk about Sunday’s game. Ochocinco offered praise for Lewis, DT Haloti Ngata and injured S Ed Reed. He also said he was looking forward to chatting with former Cincy teammate Houshmandzadeh. McClain said he and Ochocinco were “just joking around” with their exchange.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 15 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because it is “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” time!

My NEW “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” comes with an explanation. “Boomer Sooner” and I spent the weekend in New York, and as you’d expect from a gal who grew up in Texas and went to school in Oklahoma, she’s a fan of country music. I will admit to having a soft spot for the genre myself. With that in mind, this week’s winner is Eric Church’s “Smoke a Little Smoke.”

And the RETRO version of the “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” was decided Friday night-when the great John Popper and Blues Traveler took the stage at Power Plant Live. I mean, is there ANYTHING greater than “Run-Around”???

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says John Harbaugh does not expect Todd Heap to miss any time after suffering shoulder injury in win over New York Jets

Clearly that’s good news. While Heap was MIGHTY impressive hauling in the first down pass from Joe Flacco on the Ravens’ penultimate possession Monday night at New Meadowlands Stadium, it could have been costly. Being labeled the top play in NFL Week 1 action by ESPNews probably wouldn’t have been as meaningful had Heap been unable to take the field Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium.

It’s important to keep Heap on the field because his presence alongside Anquan Boldin, Derrick Mason and TJ Houshmandzadeh forces the Bengals to stay honest with their outstanding CB’s (Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph). The matchup problem is exactly what the Ravens need.

2. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says Nakamura, Josh Wilson, Lardarius Webb will ‘compete’ for nickel CB job

Apparently the Ravens had decided back around the Washington Redskins preseason game that Nakamura would be able to handle the role. That helps explain (at least to some extent) why the team had no trouble parting ways with CB Travis Fisher, and why they felt the need to hang on to veteran S Ken Hamlin.

Nakamura had no troubles against Mark Sanchez and the Jets Monday night, but he really wasn’t tested. I feel as though Wilson or Webb would be better long-term options, but the Ravens clearly appear to have at least some sort of comfort level with Nakamura.

It will be especially interesting to see how Cary Williams fits into this mix when he returns. He’s not really the best suited to cover slot receivers, but appeared to earn real playing time with his performance in the preseason.

3. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens waived IR players David Hale, Stefan Rodgers

We’ll always have the memories…of David Hale’s facial hair…

If the Ravens need to fill the roster spot, I’d think Jeri Lee would do a fine job (Thanks Gorilla Mask!)…

jerilee

4. The Sun’s Matt Vensel says Cincinnati Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco fighting with Le’Ron McClain, Willis McGahee on Twitter

And before we move on from the Ravens, a few things…

-Harbaugh told the media yesterday that he had no update on rookie LB Sergio Kindle, adding he “wished” he did. He also said he thought Webb had a chance to play against the Jets, and thinks he’ll have a chance to play Sunday as he continues to work his way back from a torn ACL.

-The Ravens return to practice today in Owings Mills as they prepare for Sunday afternoon. We’ll be live at 1 Winning Drive with coverage throughout the day on AM1570 WNST, on Twitter (@WNST), and at WNST.net. Harbaugh, Flacco, Ray Rice, Ray Lewis, Derrick Mason and others are expected to address the media this morning; and Marvin Lewis and Ochocinco are scheduled to hold conference calls with the Baltimore media this afternoon.

5. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Nick Markakis and Adam Jones homered as Orioles blew out Toronto Blue Jays at Oriole Park at Camden Yards

It’s goofy to even talk about-but if the Birds were to face the Minnesota Twins in a 7 game series starting tomorrow; does anyone else get the feeling Buck Showalter’s team would figure out a way to win?

I don’t just want the Buck Showalter t-shirt they were giving away last night, I want a Buck Showalter Fathead!

I feel like a broken record though-as I can’t think of anything else to say besides “why couldn’t this have happened when games mattered???”

I wasn’t watching again last night. Not because I don’t love the Orioles, but because the games just don’t matter. I played kickball last night, enjoyed a medium Angel Food from Smoothie King for dinner, then watched the MTV Video Music Awards (or fast-forwarded through them) on DVR. Eminem was pretty good…

I hope the games will matter in September 2011.

6. The AP/WNST.net provide numerical evidence of win

Markakis and Jones homered; Luke Scott, Ty Wigginton and Robert Andino all doubled, and Matt Wieters was 3-5 with a run scored and a RBI.

On top of that, Jake Arrieta threw six shutout innings.

Everything about the numbers is good. Go look at them. Then come back and look at Diana Falzone. We’ll call it a “win-win”! (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

falzone

7. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Cincinnati Reds, St. Louis Cardinals, Washington Nationals to visit Charm City in 2011; O’s to visit Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Nats

I guess there’s something exciting about Albert Pujols coming to OPACY next season; but I’d be plenty happy if Pujols DIDN’T play-but we were instead excited to see the Orioles play.

Do you think Nelly would make the trip with the Cards? I’ve always thought he (and his band-aid) were kinda cool.

nelly

8. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says Birds not concerned about injuries to Brian Matusz, Brian Roberts

And before we move on from the Birds, a few things…

-The Orioles will try to finish off a sweep of the Jays tonight; first pitch from The Yard is at 7:05pm, you can see it on MASN2. Phenom Kyle Drabeck makes his first career start for Toronto, he’ll face Brad Bergesen.

-Did you miss SiriusXM MLB Network Radio analyst and former Catonsville pitcher Jeff Nelson on “The Morning Reaction” with Drew Forrester this morning? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault at WNST.net today to check it out. Other things you can find in the Audio Vault include…

 • Dan Graziano (Fanhouse)-who was in attendance for the Monday Night Football contest in East Rutherford and chatted with Drew about the Ravens and Jets Wednesday morning
 • Pete Caringi (UMBC Soccer Coach)-who previewed tonight’s contest with La Salle at UMBC Stadium
 • Albert Breer (Boston Globe), Barry Barnes (Fanhouse), Brian Billick (Fox Sports/NFL Network), Clark Judge (CBS Sports), Tom Pedulla (USA Today), Tommy Polley (Former Ravens/Dunbar LB)-who all recapped Ravens/Jets during the day Tuesday with Rex Snider and Thyrl Nelson
 • Tuesday’s weekly press conference with John Harbaugh from 1 Winning Drive

It’s all in the Audio Vault-PLUS THERE’S MORE-so your day is planned. AGAIN. I’m much too good to you…

9. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland, West Virginia extend football series through 2017

A slew of other Terrapins football-related notes via Patrick:

-Within the WVU series, the Terps will host back to back games at Byrd Stadium in 2013 & 2014; they’ll visit Morgantown back to back in 2015 & 2016

-Rob Stone and former Georgia Bulldogs/Cincinnati Bengals LB David Pollack will call Maryland/WVU this Saturday for ESPNU.

-Maryland will be without LB Marcus Whitfield for the rest of the year due to a knee injury. TE Will Yeatman is expected to be ready to return from a broken finger Saturday.

-Maryland and Florida International will kick off at 12pm next Saturday (September 25) in College Park. The game can be seen on ESPNU. It isn’t a great option, but it’s better than the alternative-which is no TV at all. If Maryland keeps winning, they might see some better TV options.

That’s a lot of information for one day. If I were you, I’d consider making a donation to the “keep Patrick Stevens working fund” over at D1scourse…

10. The Sun’s Sandra McKee says Pam Shriver to hold final event at 1st Mariner Arena November 17

This sucks.

I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed Pam’s involvement with the community and her partnership with this event since its inception. I’ve been thrilled while watching events with the likes of Andre Agassi, Monica Seles and Andy Roddick. Even last year’s event with Melanie Oudin, John Isner and the Bryan Brothers was a lot of fun.

It’s a shame American tennis has fallen off the map. It’s a shame 1st Mariner Arena is an absolute dump and folks in general don’t want to attend events there. It’s a shame Pam’s life has had twists and turns and she’s been taken to California.

I hope there will be future tennis events in Baltimore. I hope Pam Shriver will be involved.

Trice Capra is a natural fit to be involved with the last event, but there’s a certain someone else I’m also hoping to see…

wozniacki

Or Andy Roddick. Either one.

And finally, I leave you with this…

Congratulations to Sasho Cirovski’s Maryland soccer team for a 3-0 win over the Loyola Greyhounds last night at Ridley Athletic Complex. To celebrate, here’s DK…

Top 10 Baseball Distractions

Posted on 14 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

Honorable Mention: Tennis-Davis Cup: Team USA vs. Columbia (Friday 11am Saturday 12pm Sunday 11am from Bogota, Columbia live on Tennis Channel); NHL-Philadelphia Flyers rookies @ Washington Capitals rookies (Thursday 3pm Kettler Capitals IcePlex)

10. HFStival feat. Third Eye Blind, Billy Idol, Everclear, Ed Kowalczyk from Live and more (Saturday 12pm Merriweather Post Pavilion); Crosby, Stills & Nash (Wednesday 7:30pm Pier Six Pavilion), Several Species (Saturday 7pm Pier Six Pavilion), Widespread Panic (Sunday 6:30pm Pier Six Pavilion); Rush (Saturday 7:30pm Jiffy Lube Live); Mr. Greengenes (Friday 8pm Power Plant Live); Chiddy Bang (Thursday 7:30pm University of Maryland Grand Ballroom); Good Charlotte (Tuesday 7:30pm Bourbon Street), Trainwreck featuring Kyle Gass from Tenacious D (Monday 8pm Bourbon Street)

What’s happening at Merriweather Saturday is by NO MEANS the “HFStival”, but it actually does look like something I would attend…for free. Especially after I think back on the memories of the HFStival at M&T Bank Stadium and Billy Idol kicking ASS in the rain. Does anyone have video of “Mony Mony” from that show? His Storytellers performance will have to do for now…

Oh right, Everclear will be there too. I enjoy Everclear…

You probably haven’t heard of Chiddy Bang, but I feel like you should have…

And hate on them all you want, but I DIG Good Charlotte. Not just because of Benji Madden’s Orioles tattoos-but also because “Festival Song” is a life anthem for me…

9. Halo: Reach available on XBox 360 (Tuesday), Linkin Park “A Thousand Suns” available in stores/on iTunes (Tuesday)

I would tell you something about Halo: Reach here, but I know absolutely NOTHING about Halo: Reach, Halo: Crest, Halo: Fallen, or anything else like that.

Instead, I figured I’d post a picture of a sexy video game nerd girl and just move on from there. When I Google Image Searched “sexy nerd”, Sarah Shahi came up for some reason…

shahi

I don’t know why she’s listed as a sexy nerd, but if this is ANY type of nerd…I’ll start playing EVERY VIDEO GAME IN THE WORLD tomorrow.

8. High School Football: Perry Hall @ Tuscarora (Thursday 7pm), Annapolis @ Glen Burnie (Thursday 6:30pm)

As I am officially “old” at 27 (yeah, it makes me OLD. Just the way it is. I’ve accepted it.), I no longer know what’s “cool” amongst high school kids. I thought it might be POGS, but apparently that was what was cool with MIDDLE school kids…when I was in middle school.

I thought maybe it was prune juice, but apparently that’s what’s popular with folks whose GRANDKIDS are in high school.

I finally decided to consult the internet. The internet knows everything. You know what they said was big amongst high school kids this year? You might remember it being popular during your own high school years…

Smoking.

Ridiculous. Smoking is gross. You could get lung cancer. You could die. Or WORSE-you could end up looking like Amy Winehouse!!!

winehouse

7. Soccer: NASL-Carolina RailHawks @ Crystal Palace Baltimore (Saturday 5pm Paul Angelo Russo Stadium Calvert Hall), MLS-DC United @ LA Galaxy (Saturday 10pm from Los Angeles live on Fox Soccer Channel); College Soccer-Maryland @ Loyola (Tuesday 7pm Ridley Athletic Complex), Loyola @ Towson (Sunday 1pm Towson Center Field), La Salle @ UMBC (Wednesday 7pm UMBC Stadium)

I love Greyhounds coach Mark Mettrick. I would love him more if his name was “Terrapins coach Mark Mettrick.” Unfortunately the guy who has that job is pretty freaking good.

Anyway, DC United plays LA Galaxy this week. Sadly, I could not find the clip of Joe Lo Truglio screaming for the Galaxy from “I Love You Man.” Instead, you’ll have to settle for the clip of Joe Lo Truglio working as a weightlifting spotter…

6. Boxing: Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora (Saturday 9pm from Los Angeles live on HBO PPV)

With no offense to Shane Mosley…or boxing in general…I’m just not that interested in this. Or just about anything else the sport could offer anymore.

But the real question is how could Shane Mosley stand a CHANCE against a real boxer when he BARELY beat Shaquille O’Neal???

5. Auto Racing: NASCAR Sylvania 300 (Sunday 1pm from Loudon, NH live on ESPN), IndyCar Series Indy Japan 300 (Saturday 11pm from Motegi, Tochigi live on VERSUS)

Japan was the only place Danica Patrick has managed to pick up an IndyCar victory in her career. Oh hey look-here’s a picture of Danica Patrick in a bikini from the SI photo shoot she did who knows how long ago…

danica

4. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC Fight Night-Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares (Wednesday 8pm from Austin, TX live on SpikeTV)

I don’t know how many times I can explain that events like this are why MMA continues to grow at historic levels. These are QUALITY fighters on a free, over-the-air, well-promoted card.

However, what the hell else are they showing on SpikeTV these days? What is 1000 Ways to Die? I don’t understand it AT ALL…

3. Pro Wrestling: WWE Night of Champions (Sunday 8pm from Chicago live on Pay-Per-View)

There are rumors floating around that there is a contract dispute between Chris Jericho and WWE, and this could be Y2J’s final appearance. I cannot stress…AT ALL…what an incredible mistake that would be on the part of Vince McMahon and company.

Why? This is why.

2. College Football: Maryland @ West Virginia (Saturday 12pm from Morgantown, WV live on ESPNU), Navy @ Louisiana Tech (Saturday 7pm from Ruston, Louisiana live on ESPN3.com), Towson @ Villanova (Saturday 3:30pm from Philadelphia live on Comcast SportsNet)

Dear Lord. Please…oh PLEASE do not allow a grown man who dresses up like Davy Crockett to be happy on Saturday…

wvu

People make fun of the fact that we havea turtle as a mascot in College Park. The Mountaineers have Davy FREAKING Crockett.

1. NFL: Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday 1pm from Cincinnati live on CBS-WJZ 13 locally)

Look, I DON’T like Chad Ochocinco. Trust me on that. I hope Ray Lewis pops him in the mouth twice as hard as he did at M&T Bank Stadium last year. But when the guy’s funny, the guy’s funny…

Live From Owings Mills: John Harbaugh’s Weekly Press Conference

Posted on 14 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh held the first of his weekly regular season press conferences today at 1 Winning Drive.

Amongst the highlights from today’s conversation:

-Harbaugh says TE Todd Heap “should practice tomorrow” despite suffering a shoulder injury during the Ravens’ penultimate possession Monday night at New Meadowlands Stadium. “It looks like he’s okay” added Harbaugh regarding the former Pro Bowl TE; who dove for a Joe Flacco pass on first down, making a spectacular catch in the process.

-When asked if scratching CB Lardarius Webb from the win over the New York Jets had more to do with pain Webb was feeling or something in warmups the coaches weren’t seeing, Harbaugh responded “all of the above.” He added that Webb was still going through the “healing process” after returning from a torn ACL and the team does not want to rush him back. Regarding his status for Sunday afternoon’s AFC North tilt against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paul Brown Stadium, Harbaugh said “I thought he had a chance to play last week, he wasn’t able to do it. I think he has a chance to play this week…it’s going to be his decision in the end.”

-Harbaugh said Tom Zbikowski’s performance as punt returner was “disappointing”, but said he had a “good conversation” with Zbikowski on the train ride home from East Rutherford and believes the safety “will learn from” his performance. However, Harbaugh did not commit to Zbikowski continuing to be the permanent option at punt returner, saying CB Chris Carr could still be in the mix.

-Harbaugh thought OL Marshal Yanda and OL Chris Chester “did really well” after being shuffled into roles as RT and RG respectively. “I think they’re ready to do it” said Harbaugh, who said Yanda would continue to be a long term option if starting RT Jared Gaither is unable to return.

-Harbaugh said he had no update on rookie LB Sergio Kindle, who remains unsigned. “I wish I did” said Harbaugh. Kindle was in Charm City last weekend to be looked over by neurologists. Harbaugh did not field questions about injured Ravens Gaither (back), DT Terrence Cody (knee) or OLB/DE Paul Kruger (shoulder).

NOTES:
Hear from Harbaugh NOW in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net……The Ravens reached injury settlements with OT Stefan Rodgers (ankle) and OL David Hale (tailbone), both of whom had been on Injured Reserve. Both are no longer on the team’s roster……Bill Macatee and former Oakland Raiders QB Rich Gannon will call Sunday’s Ravens-Bengals game for CBS, which can be seen locally on WJZ 13……The Ravens return to the practice field tomorrow; Harbaugh, Flacco, RB Ray Rice, LB Ray Lewis, WR Derrick Mason and others are expected to be available in formal media sessions. The Cincinnati Bengals will provide conference calls with coach Marvin Lewis and WR Chad Ochocinco for members of the Baltimore media.
