Live From Owings Mills: Houshmandzadeh Says Bengals Coaches “Nervous” Before Facing Ravens

Posted on 07 September 2010 by Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens introduced newly signed WR TJ Houshmandzadeh to the local media Tuesday, and the former Pro Bowler wasted no time providing quotes that were ready to be passed around via Twitter all day.

The first question asked of Houshmandzadeh was whether or not the confidence of former Cincinnati Bengals and Oregon State Beavers teammate Chad Ochocinco rubbed off on him. His response?

“I rubbed off on him. That’s just the truth.”

Houshmandzadeh proved to be just as entertaining if not quite as comical as his former Cincy teammate; offering memorable quotes throughout the introductory session.

When asked his feelings about leaving a losing team like the Seattle Seahawks for greener pastures with the Ravens, Houshmandzadeh said “it’s refreshing…it’s hard to optimistic when you know what you’re going against.”

When asked whether it would be a little weird to put on a Ravens jersey after playing eight years in the Queen City, he quipped “it was a little weird putting on my helmet today…but I look forward to it man. I’ve been on a lot of losing teams in my career.”

When asked about his potential role in the Ravens offense with established receivers like Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason around him, he responded “I don’t know…that will play itself out over the course of the season. We’ll see what happens. But I’m a firm believer that if you show the coaches that they should get you involved, then they’ll get you involved. That’s what I plan on doing every day when it’s time to practice.”

When asked about the end of his tenure in the Emerald City, Houshmandzadeh replied “I can promise you, me not being there has nothing to do with football.”

And then of course there was the quote that has become an immediate sensation on Twitter-already “re-Tweeted” by the likes of Ravens FB Le’Ron McClain and Cincinnati Enquirer beat writer Joe Reedy. The quote where Houshmandzadeh explained that Bengals coaches would be “nervous” before the team would face the Ravens’ defense.

“I used to always tell the coaches-and Marvin (Lewis) knows this-’Marvin, tell the coaches-why are they nervous? They’re not the ones playing’. They would be nervous like they were the ones playing.”

Houshmandzadeh brought a positive attitude and an engaging back and forth to his first press conference as a Raven. He showed why he has been a popular figure in the NFL since he was selected in the 7th round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

In the end, Houshmandzadeh’s personality won’t define his tenure in Charm City. His production on the field, his ability to work with QB Joe Flacco and fellow receivers Mason and Boldin will have much to do with how his tenure is defined. Whether or not the Ravens can go on to win the AFC North and represent the AFC in the Super Bowl will be equally important when judging Houshmandzadeh’s time with the Ravens.

Houshmandzadeh signed just a one year deal with the Ravens, but could factor in to the long terms plans of Ozzie Newsome, John Harbaugh and company should the 2010 season play out the well all parties clearly hope it will. The receiver said he would like to stick around longer “if everything falls into place” when asked about his future Tuesday.

If he’s as entertaining on the field as he is off, he’ll have every opportunity to stick around.

I’m really hit and miss when it comes to the Goo Goo Dolls. Sometimes I think they’re much too sappy, sometimes they put out a jam like “Slide”…

There’s like nothing…in the world…better than The Roots…

There isn’t much of anyone I’d drive to Bristow, Virginia to see…but I’d at least consider it for a band like Kings of Leon. I mean…they did “Manhattan”…

Not a whole lot of you will have heard of Sick Puppies, but it shouldn’t keep you from going to Sonar to check them out. They’re actually pretty good. When I would sit it on 98KUPD in Phoenix, I would regularly get them switched into the rotation…

9. Baltimore International Festival/6th Annual Mayor’s Cup Soccer Tournament (Saturday-Sunday Poly/Western High School)

Winner gets a free XBox!!!

Oh wait…that was the other mayor.

You know what my favorite tent is at the international festival? The AMERICAN tent! I hope they have Buffalo Chicken Dip and episodes of Holly’s World…that’s what makes our country great!

8. Pro Wrestling: TNA “HardCORE Justice” (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View); WWE “Wrestlemania 26″ replay (Saturday 9pm NBC)

Usually including Pro Wrestling events is just an excuse for me to put in pictures of hot wrestling chicks. Not this time. Why? Because I love both of these events. One-the TNA event is an ECW reunion.  Anything that involves more Rob Van Dam makes me (and God I believe) happy…

Two…WM26 was Shawn Michaels’ final match. Once again, I (and God) approve…

7. Golf: PGA Tour Turning Stone Resort Championship (Thursday-Sunday 4pm from Verona, NY live on Golf Channel), Champions Tour 3M Championship (Friday & Saturday 6:30pm, Sunday 7pm from Blaine, MN live on Golf Channel)

Stuart Appleby shot a 59 in some Golf Tournament Classic thingy last weekend, and apparently that’s impressive.  I’m not sure I agree. I shot a 44 myself at Maui Golf a few weeks ago when I was in Ocean City!

Speaking of Ocean City, former Intern Genna lives in Ocean City now. I wonder what she’s up to???

genna

Exactly what I expected.

6. Auto Racing: NASCAR Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen (Sunday 1pm from Watkins Glen, NY live on ESPN), IndyCar Series Honda Indy 200 (Sunday 2:30pm from Lexington, OH live on VERSUS)

If my life depended on it, I couldn’t tell you who won last week’s NASCAR race. I’ll go with Terry Labonte. He’s good, right?

Speaking of NASCAR, some guy named Basil Marceaux is running for governor in Tennessee. I think you’ll understand the transition after you watch the video…

5. Swimming: Conoco Phillips National Championships (Tuesday & Wednesday 9pm live on Universal Sports, Saturday 4pm Sunday 4:30pm on NBC; live webcast throughout at Swimnetwork.com. All swimming from Irvine, CA)

I’ve used all of my Michael Phelps material. Frankly, I’ll just be rooting for the dude at this point. I mean-he’s from Charm City. I want him to win.

Instead, I’ll just post this picture of Amanda Beard. She may or may not still be a swimmer. Like it matters…

amandabeard

4. National Sports Collectors Convention (Thursday-Sunday Baltimore Convention Center)

How about that? For the VERY reasonable price of $110, I can get John Riggins’ autograph!

How about for an additional 40 bucks, I get to put him in a Ric Flair sharpshooter???

I’m sure there are people in the world that are excited about this type of event. I’m just not one of them. Paying money for someone’s signature-or for the chance to take a picture of them-is something I’m COMPLETELY uninterested in. Unless of course that person is John Stamos. Yeah, I’d pay money to meet him…

For the record, my Fantasy Football team name this year IS Jesse & The Rippers. What else would it be?

3. Tennis: ATP Tour U.S. Open Series Legg Mason Tennis Classic (Tuesday-Sunday William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park; Thursday 4pm live on Tennis Channel, Friday 12pm & 7pm live on ESPN2 5pm live on Tennis Channel, Saturday 1pm live on Tennis Channel 7pm live on ESPN2, Sunday 3pm live on ESPN2 8pm live on Tennis Channel)

Yes-of COURSE I’m going to watch tennis this week, even if it means I have to venture into the cesspool that is our nation’s capital. Why? Like you even need to ask…

nalbandian

And you thought you knew what I was going to say there…

2. Mixed Martial Arts: UFC 117-Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen (Saturday 10pm from Oakland live on Pay-Per-View)

Anderson Silva is one of the greatest fighters in MMA history.

You could bump into Chael Sonnen at Royal Farms today and have no idea who he was or what he did for a living. (Edit form GMC: Yeah, that’s a variation of a Bert Sugar joke. Deal with it.)

Yet for some reason, Chael Sonnen thinks it appropriate to make comments like these…

“The Michael Jackson of MMA”…that’s actually really good.

1. Ravens Training Camp (Tuesday, Thursday & Monday 8:45am & 2:45pm, Wednesday & Friday 8:45am & 2pm, Sunday 2:45pm McDaniel College; Saturday 12pm M&T Bank Stadium); Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony (Saturday 7pm from Canton, Ohio live on NFL Network); Hall of Fame Game: Dallas Cowboys vs. Cincinnati Bengals (Sunday 8pm from Canton, Ohio live on NBC)

I know a gal who is a BIG fan of the Dallas Cowboys. I am not. In fact, the only thing we tend to agree about is that the Redskins suck. But with that in mind, I’m not much for the Bengals either. Therefore, the only acceptable result Sunday night would be a scoreless tie.

In the meantime-I will be willing to admit that I find Chad Ochocinco humorous. For example…

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 16 July 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Friday!

It’s a Happy Friday for me because apparently I slept straight through an earthquake this morning. That’s about right though. World War III could be happening outside my window, and if it happens before 5:20, I’m not going to be affected.

Oh and also, I skipped the ESPY Awards Wednesday night (I’m assuming I’m not the only one); but when I went back and watched some clips on YouTube Thursday; I thought the Peyton Manning/Blind Side thing was kinda funny…

Like I said, KINDA funny. Not quite as funny as Seth Meyers’ quip:

“This is where sports and entertainment come together, It’s like a Kardashian sister’s bedroom.”

That IS funny.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Orioles took ‘giant step backward’ in 1st half according to Andy MacPhail

Andy better be careful…Greg Bader might take away his press pass with that type of negativity!

The funny thing is…I’m not sure how much I agree with Andy.

In order to take a “giant step backward”, you have to be moving somewhat significantly in the RIGHT direction. While the O’s had done some good things; they put together a 25 man roster that was ABSOLUTELY destined to make them the worst team in the AL East.

The good news is that they didn’t spend too much money to do so-so despite the fact that the organization is an absolute embarrassment in Charm City; it’s at least a cheap embarrassment.

Yep, that’s the best thing I can say. Oh-and they are on a 4 game win streak thanks to their stop down at The Ballpark in Arlington before the All-Star Game.

Now that’s the best thing I can say.

2. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Wieters to DL (hamstring) retroactive to July 10

And the word is that the Birds are going to call up Josh Bell to take his roster spot…which means that if Juan Samuel needs to give Craig Tatum some rest or needs to take him out of a game; Jake Fox and his 21 career games played behind the plate will be the only option.

You know what-this is another one of those situations where you don’t REALLY want to think about this. Instead, let’s think about American Idol’s Katharine McPhee (Thanks Don Chavez via Busted Coverage!)…

mcphee

3. STATS’ Alan Ferguson previews Birds’ 2nd half opener tonight vs. Toronto Blue Jays at Oriole Park at Camden Yards

Thanks to the Jays for trading away Alex Gonzalez before the series started, too! Of course, the Texas Rangers traded FOR Cliff Lee last week and we thought that would be trouble-but everything worked out there. Maybe I should be concerned that this will have a reverse impact…

First pitch between Brad Bergesen and Ricky Romero at OPACY is at 7:05 tonight, and the game can be seen on MASN. Jeremy Guthrie and Brian Matusz follow Bergesen this weekend against Brandon Morrow and Shaun Marcum respectively; both of the other games this weekend can also be seen on WJZ 13.

I’ll say the Orioles will win 1 of 3. But what the hell do I know?

4. The Sun’s Dean Jones says Tim Bascom struggled for Norfolk Tides, Brandon Waring homered for Bowie Baysox on farm

And before we move on from the Orioles, a few things…

-Did you miss Mike Gonzalez with Drew Forrester this morning on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out!

We also talked to Frederick Keys Hitting Coach and Former Minnesota Twins INF Denny Hocking; as well as NBCSports.com HardballTalk writer Craig Calcaterra and we got a live update from the British Open, as SI/Golf.com’s Damon Hack checked in live from St. Andrews in Scotland. They’re all in the Audio Vault as well.

-If anything happens this weekend regarding Buck Showalter; you’ll want to make sure you’re signed up for the WNST Text Service. If I’m guessing there…I’ll say “meh, probably not” again. I really think nothing is happening until the Ravens report to McDaniel College.

5. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens QB Marc Bulger fine with backing up Joe Flacco

Look, I haven’t exactly been THRILLED about the acquisition of Marc Bulger; but I’ve been totally willing to admit that he’s a very solid backup QB. As long as he doesn’t have to play against good teams, I have a good feeling about what Marc Bulger is capable of doing.

Of course, I said ALL of that before I realized that Marc Bulger grew up in the hellhole that is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and grew up rooting for the effing Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ugh.

It was bad enough that the dude went to West freaking Virginia; but now you’re adding on that he rooted for the Pittsburgh freaking Steelers?!?!?

Why doesn’t he just go play a charity basketball game at North Harford High School?!

He says those loyalties are gone, but I’ve seen those miscreants up there in the Steel City. Those urine-looking colors are in their blood. It’s like a bad disease.

I’ll be watching this Bulger character…

6. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Ryan Mink says Terrell Suggs picked Ravens to win AFC North on ESPN

In all fairness, that’s really the ONLY choice “T-Sizzle” could make. But he’s not the only one that has picked the Ravens to win the division this year.

I haven’t decided who I’m going to pick to win the division yet myself. As I’ve said before, I truly believe the Cincinnati Bengals are the “team to beat” in the division; but that doesn’t mean the Ravens can’t beat them. In fact, they may very well do that.

But it won’t be easy. Carson Palmer, Cedric Benson, Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Bryant and Jermaine Gresham give the Bengals a formiddable offensive attack; and their defense was particularly sound a season ago; thanks to large part to Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph in the back.

If the Ravens want to win the Super Bowl, I firmly believe they need to win the division first. To do that, they can’t get swept by the Bengals or the Steelers as they have been last year and the year before, respectively.

7. Delmarva Daily Times’ Celeste E. Whittaker says Joe Flacco appeared at Harrison, New Jersey football camp Thursday

And when local athletes do good things, we like to give them credit for that.

In fact, it reminds me of some of my favorite moments from attending sports camps growing up. Like the time I was at baseball camp and Hillary Fisher showed up (Thanks Gorilla Mask!)…

gorillamask

8. ESPN.com’s John Clayton says Ben Grubbs could be first time Pro Bowler in 2010

I couldn’t agree more. As we often see, players are regularly honored with a Pro Bowl selection a year AFTER they were deserving of getting their first nod-as they sort of need some “word of mouth” help to get there. It wouldn’t surprise me AT ALL if Grubbs-or Jarret Johnson for that matter found their way to Hawaii this year, similar to how it took until last year for Haloti Ngata to get the honor.

I’d throw Michael Oher in that mix as well. If everything goes well, the team has a real chance to be littered with Pro Bowlers. Of course, it would be really nice if none of them actually played in the Pro Bowl as they were getting ready for a bigger game in Dallas the following week.

9. The Sun’s Jeff Barker says Maryland AD Search Committee has begun meeting

We discussed this process with IHoops CEO Len Elmore (who is part of the committee) Monday morning on WNST; as the committe can only do so much considering a replacement for President C.D. Mote has yet to be selected in College Park; and the new president will clearly play a major role in the selection of Debbie Yow’s successor.

If the name “Tina Wallman” is the one they come up with through the Search Committee, I’ll think it had been a successful one (Thanks Guyism!)…

wallmann

10. The Oregonian’s John Canzano says would-be Terrapins AD candidate Rob Mullens hired by Oregon

This is a shame, as Mullens’ background at Kentucky and also under Debbie Yow with the Terps would have made him a perfect candidate for the AD job.

There are still PLENTY of good candidates for the gig (including UConn’s Jeff Hathaway and Oklahoma’s Joe Castiglione), but Mullens might have been available at a bit of a less costly price; which could be helpful in the search.

And finally, I leave you with this.

I’m not usually very serious; but this is ABSOLUTELY series. Please tune in this weekend (12pm Saturday-12pm Sunday) for Rex Snider’s “Curing Cancer One Call At A Time” marathon. Guests will include the likes of Curt Schilling, Kurt Warner and more. All proceeds go to the Cancer Center at Harbor Hospital here in Baltimore.

It’s a worthwhile cause. So worthwhile that I ate 12 hot dogs to be a part of it.

Certainly much more worthwhile than how I’m going to spend the majority of my weekend…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 17 June 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I’m not sure why my friends thought I’d enjoy a picture of Alexander Ovechkin dancing in his underwear with an attractive young women…but I do.

ovechkin

I’ll even spare all of the “funny that he was doing that while Patrick Kane was hoisting the Stanley Cup” comments that I’m tempted to make.

Eh…I can’t help myself. Ha ha Washington Capitals fans!

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP says Jeremy Guthrie fell apart in 6th as Orioles lost to Giants

As I said yesterday via Twitter (follow us @WNST), it was a bit disturbing to see Jeremy Guthrie suddenly turn into the 2009 version of Jeremy Guthrie, as he looked more like a Home Run Derby pitcher than the confident pitcher we’ve seen for the better part of the 2010 season.

It was especially disturbing for Aubrey Huff to park one in McCovey Cove. I don’t blame him for wanting to get out of Baltimore and this unthinkably dreadful organization, but I haven’t forgiven him either. He called Baltimore a “horsesh*t city.” Screw him.

Taking 1 out of 3 in San Francisco was about as much as the Orioles could have asked for. I never thought they had a chance to beat Tim Lincecum, although I guess Lincecum was actually fairly beatable yesterday despite putting together 10 strikeouts.

They’re off today. Thank God for that.

2. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of loss

How bout that Julio Lugo??? I hope he didn’t leave AT&T Park without getting a baseball signed by ol’ Cy Young Lincecum. Thank God Scott Moore was scratched!

And Nick Markakis continued his parade (if you forget about his 8th inning at bat) towards a first trip to the All-Star Game, he had 2 hits and a walk. Miguel Tejada had a couple of hits but also a couple of strikeouts; but Corey Patterson finished the day 0-4 with 3 K’s.

That’s all the positive from yesterday. Well, that and of course the fact that Guyism introduced me to Tina Wallman…

wallman

3. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Buck Showalter expected to interview with O’s next week

I guess the good news is that if the Orioles DO hire Buck Showalter, they can almost be assured that their NEXT manager will help them win a World Series. (See “Joe Torre, Yankees” and “Bob Brenly, Diamondbacks.”)

Color me unmoved by Buck Showalter. I know he’s had success as a manager, and maybe he could be good again. I don’t REALLY see him leaving ESPN for the type of work it’s going to take to revitalize this community and organization; and I don’t know how much he would really LOVE being the manager of the Orioles as much as he might want one more ride in the sun at the MLB level.

I assume that’s exactly what Andy MacPhail is going to find out in the interview. If he ever gets around to asking. He hasn’t gotten around to some other things around here…you know…like the “building” part of rebuilding.

4. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says Birds have interest in Jake Fox, decision to make on Garrett Atkins

Boy…the excitement never ends.

In fairness, the Atkins decision shouldn’t be too difficult. I know it will probably hurt Andy MacPhail to admit he was wrong; but Juan Samuel apparently has no use for Atkins. With that in mind, there’s really no point in keeping him here.

That being said, I’m not sure what the point would be in bringing Garrett Atkins II (or Jake Fox) to Baltimore. We’ve been down this road before. Could Jake Fox turn out to be a guy who could bring a semi-decent bat off the bench to a team? Yeah…maybe? But is that what the Orioles are missing right now?

The Orioles already have those guys. Their names are Ty Wigginton and Luke Scott. Problem is, the team is so incomplete that they are forced to play them every day.

Ugh…this is really bringing me down again.

5. Baysox.com says Brandon Waring swung bit bat as Bowie won slugfest over Reading on farm

And before we move on from the Orioles, a couple of things to keep in mind…

-The Birds are off today before heading to San Diego and opening a weekend series with the Padres at Petco Park. Brian Matusz, Kevin Millwood and Jake Arrieta will throw this weekend for the Birds against Wade LeBlanc, Clayton Richard and Jon Garland for the Fathers.

-Congratulations to Adam Jones, who was selected as “Apologist of the Morning” by “The Great Arbitrator” Drew Forrester this morning. I’m not trying to pile on the fact that Nestor Aparicio has been beating him up on Twitter, either. It’s more about the fact that he said THIS after yesterday’s loss…

“It was a tough one. We left alot of men on base. We gonna get them in though. It’s gonna happen.

Which leaves me to ask the important question of “WHEN?!?!?!?!?”

-Did you miss former Oriole Mike Bordick on “The Morning Reaction” today on AM1570 WNST? If so, make sure you head on over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net to check it out. Other interviews this morning included…

 • A look around the World Cup with former USMNT star Eric Wynalda of Yahoo! Sports and Fox Soccer Channel
 • Bowie Baysox reliever Pat Egan, who is off to an OUTSTANDING start this season
 • and Alan Bastable-the senior editor of Golf Magazine who previewed the U.S. OpenIt’s all in the Audio Vault, check it out!

6. UMTerps.com announces former Harvard coach John Tillman officially hired as lacrosse coach

“Should have been Gary Gait!”

I’m kidding, of course.

No pressure on John Tillman-but as my buddy Patrick Stevens (@D1scourse on Twitter) reminded us, Associate AD Michael Lipitz said the school still has NCAA Championship aspirations.

It’s only been since 1975. No pressure or anything.

7. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Maryland lacrosse ‘needs to win’ under Tillman

Which was going to be the case whether the Terps hired Mike Pressler, Paul Cantabene, Don Zimmerman, Jeff Tambroni, Scott Marr, Marc Van Arsdale, Lars Tiffany, Leland Rogers or ANYONE ELSE to replace Dave Cottle.

The point is that by not getting one of the sexier names (like Pressler or Tambroni), they won’t get an initial spark of interest. Winning-starting with the talented team they return this season-will be crucial to not lose or win over casual fans.

8. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says John Harbaugh expects Ravens to sign ‘at least one’ of Walt Harris/Ken Lucas/Ken Hamlin group

The coaches really seemed to like Harris when he tried out in Owings Mills; but it’s worth remembering that Harris will turn 36 during Training Camp. I’m not sure what an unemployed 36 year old corner would really bring to this team, but that doesn’t dismiss his chance of showing up at McDaniel College either. My preference would be Lucas, but that’s just me.

There have been rumors floating around that other players will be cut soon, as the team tries to figure out the group that will report to Westminster. If there’s any room on the roster, I would ask that the team consider signing Elin Grindemyr. It would make my job a lot more interesting! (Thanks Barstool Sports!)

elin

9. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Bengals WR Ochocinco doesn’t believe Ravens best in AFC North

As a Ravens fan, I will admit to sometimes forgetting that Cincinnati IS the team to beat in the AFC North this season, considering they won the division a season ago and swept the Ravens & Pittsburgh Steelers in doing so. We tend to forget that because they were dismissed on Wild Card weekend by the New York Jets while the Ravens soundly beat the New England Patriots; but the Bengals WERE the better team, and they ARE the team to beat.

That doesn’t mean I necessarily expect the Bengals to win the division this year. But I know they’ve gotten better this offseason-and they’re a Super Bowl contender just like the Ravens are.

Let’s avoid revisionist history if possible.

10. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Ray Lewis against expanding NFL season to 18 games

I don’t like it either for the record.

You know what I do like? Whoever these girls are. (Thanks Beer Goggler/Busted Coverage!)

girls

And finally, I leave you with this.

As I said yesterday on Facebook, I am ashamed to admit that I have never tried Lake Trout before in my life. I have a friend in town from Texas, so we’re changing that today. We’re headed here…any advice?

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 23 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Tuesday!

It’s another one of those “I THINK it’s a Happy” days today, as season allergies hit me like 6 tons of bricks last night. I have to get healthy before tomorrow night, because “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” and I are supposed to go see Alicia Keys at 1st Mariner Arena.

I can’t miss that.

I need your remedy ideas. What will get me healthy again? I’ve been taking the Benadryl Allergy stuff at night, but it makes me drowsy-so I can’t do it during the day. Or at least not when I’m working.

I need ideas. Apparently blood spinning won’t help me, but I’m willing to give it a try. Hell, I’m willing to try anything if it will make me feel better. So far I’ve tried this….

moosehead

And while it’s made me feel better…I’m not totally certain it’s working.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens added veteran DL Cory Redding with 2 year deal

This appears to be a good acquisition.

Although nothing is guaranteed, Redding has a (mostly) solid track record-and we have reason to believe he might well be BETTER than Dwan Edwards. That being said, Edwards CERTAINLY had a better 2009 season than Redding did.

It appears as though Redding will slide in at Edwards’ position, possibly rotating out for Trevor Pryce in obvious passing situations.

I still expect the Ravens to pursue pass rush help in the NFL Draft-either at DE or OLB. BUT-I think this is a good addition for a team that needed D-Line help.

Although, my first choice of people to steal from Seattle would probably have been this guy….

Damn.

2. Seattle Times’ Danny O’Neil says Redding struggled to start season in Seattle last year, but was one of Seahawks’ ‘better linemen’ down the stretch

I’ve heard a few people say something along the lines of “are we sure Redding was always giving his all in Detroit?”

For the record, I’m not.

That being said, I’m not sure I expect someone playing for the Lions to always give it everything he has on every play. I also know that things were VERY awkward in Seattle a season ago, with Jim Mora finally taking over, struggling, and going on to be fired.

It’s REALLY hard to judge what happened last season there.

I’m certainly willing to give Redding the benefit of the doubt, especially knowing that he’s coming to a MUCH better system. In talking with Redding yesterday, you could certainly sense the excitement he had about playing alongside the likes of Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Haloti Ngata, etc. If you missed Redding on “The Bob Haynie Show” With “Hoops” & Mark Suchy yesterday-check it out in the Audio Vault at WNST.net.

(Edit from GMC: That makes back to back times that the Ravens have acquired a player and I was the first reporter in town to talk to the player, after Anquan Boldin a few weeks back. I don’t say that to brag or boast. I say that because I hope you’ll continue to turn to us for Ravens information-as well as information on all local sports.)

3. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens receive no compensatory picks in NFL Draft

Which we knew was coming. Unfortunately-for all of the players they lost (Jason Brown, Kyle Boller, Bart Scott, etc.); they also signed their own free agents (Domonique Foxworth, Matt Birk, LJ Smith, etc.).

The Ravens will still look to acquire 3rd or 4th round picks between now and when the Draft starts about a month from now.

I’ll look to acquire Olivia Munn’s phone number myself. I just can’t guarantee that either of us will be successful, but I probably have more faith in Ozzie Newsome and company. (Thanks Busted Coverage.)

munn

4. Philadelphia Daily News’ Bernard Fernandez says Zbikowski would consider boxing return if NFL has work stoppage

zbi

I had never thought about this.

First of all, I GENUINELY don’t believe there will be a work stoppage in the NFL. I really don’t. I think this will get worked out.

BUT-should there be a work stoppage, I just can’t see Tom Zbikowski REALLY use the time to step inside a ring; unless his relationship with the Ravens is somehow damaged between now and then.

Just because they might have to step away for a short time doesn’t mean they won’t ever have to play football again. While I doubt Tom Zbikowski WOULD be injured in a boxing ring, he’d certainly be putting himself at risk.

It would be pretty freaking cool, though.

5. The Sun’s Jamison Hensley says Bisciotti currently AGAINST changes to OT rules

In fairness, I don’t necessarily think that the new OT rules are perfect, but I DO think they’re a better option than the current system.

Really, I’m fine with just about any system (really, I am) as long as games don’t end in ties. As we all know, tying is like kissing your sister.

Which is only okay if your sister looks like Angie Quesada…

quesada

6. Carroll County Times says former managers Johnny Oates, Ray Miller elected to Orioles Hall of Fame

Johnny Oates is clearly getting in because he was a great guy who sadly met his demise due to a brain tumor. He ABSOLUTELY did not do enough as a manager or player to warrant consideration for the honor.

Ray Miller was a very good pitching coach and not a good manager. I guess someone had to get in this year.

And apparently this guy didn’t get a whole heck of a lot of consideration….

cordova

7. The Sun’s Dan Connolly says Bordick will try to teach Birds’ minor leaguers ‘little things’

Like…which town has groupies you might want to stay away from? (Edit from GMC: I’m looking at you, Pawtucket.)

It’s great to have Mike Bordick back with the organization. I’d like to see even MORE former players involved with the organization somehow. Bordick is a guy who can certainly bring a quality perspective on defense, bunting, timely hitting, moving runners over, etc.

All of those things are really good for young ballplayers. Or veteran ballplayers for that matter. Like the ones playing in Baltimore for example.

8. Washington Post’s Dave Sheinin says O’s ‘full of hope’ this season

I think we should play a game: “Who’s going to write this story tomorrow?”

I’ll say Stan McNeal from the Sporting News. But it wouldn’t surprise me if it was someone from USA Today…or CBSSports.com…or wherever.

Here’s my only question. What side of the hill does Mr. “Hope” throw from? Does he have a win-loss record better than Jeremy Guthrie’s?

If so, I’ll take him.

9. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Jordan Williams, Sean Mosley will be ‘most integral’ parts for 2010-11 Terrapins

And the team is going to NEED scoring from Adrian Bowie and/or Cliff Tucker.

And they’re going to need Dino Gregory to develop into a more all-around power forward.

And they’re going to need James Padgett and Ashton Pankey to be able to give them some minutes up front off the bench.

And they’re going to need the freshmen guards (Terrell Stoglin, P’Shon Howard, Mychal Parker) to give them SOME sort of contribution. Parker is clearly the most likely to do that, but Stoglin could end up working into the rotation as the point guard of the future.

Of course, we’re some 7 months even from Midnight Madness. Maybe we should calm down a bit.

10. Inside Lacrosse says Terps 4th in poll, Hopkins falls out of Top 10

It is definitely WEIRD to see the Blue Jays outside the Top 10, but you have to beat SOMEONE of note to be considered a top-tier team. (Edit from GMC: I’m terribly afraid that win will come against Maryland.)

What’s also weird is that no other local team (with MAYBE the exception of Loyola) is even a threat to get NEAR the Top 10.

Let’s step it up boys. It’s about time this town is recognized for something besides selling X-Boxes that were once evidence in a major trial on eBay.

And finally, I leave you with this.

For whatever reason, my Facebook and Twitter feeds were taken up by comments on “Dancing With The Stars” last night. You people do know that wrestling airs on Mondays, don’t you???

Here’s Chad Ochocinco…

And Here’s Erin Andrews…

If I see your testicles lying around, I’ll try to return them to you.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…

Where Did Ravens Go Wrong in ’09? Look No Further Than Final 5 Minutes

Posted on 18 January 2010 by Glenn Clark

It was fitting to see the Ravens fall apart in the final 5 minutes of the first half Saturday night in Indianapolis. Fitting because the final 5 minutes of halves are exactly where everything went wrong for this team throughout the season in dropping 8 games.

Need a refresher?

Week 4 @ New England:
Final 5 minutes of 1st half-The Patriots were ahead 10-7, but a Sammy Morris 12 yard TD followed by a Joe Flacco interception put the Pats up 17-7 at the break.
2nd half-After driving the length of the field, a hopeful game-winning drive faltered when Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton dropped passes to finish the Ravens’ chances.

Week 5 vs. Cincinnati:
1st half-After getting into Bengals territory with :33 to play in the half, the Ravens were unable to get even as much as a FG attempt before the half. They were forced to burn their final timeout at the :33 mark because an 8 yard pass to Todd Heap was in the middle of the field. (The Ravens ultimately lost by a field goal.)
2nd half-Carson Palmer converted a 4th and 1 to continue a hopeful game-winning drive, then Ray Lewis’ personal foul on Chad Ochocinco and Ed Reed/Frank Walker’s pass interference on a 3rd & 16 put Cincy in scoring position. They cashed in, as Palmer found Andre Caldwell for the winner.

Week 6 @ Minnesota:
1st half-Trailing 14-0, the Ravens had a golden opportunity to make the game a 1 possession game with a 1st & 10 from the Vikings 12 yard line and 2 timeouts. Unfortunately, all they could muster was a 1 yard completion to Ray Rice, and they were forced to kick a FG. (The extra 4 points would have made up the eventual 2 point difference.)
2nd half-After what seemed like an impossible rally, the Ravens went ahead 31-30. It took Brett Favre little time to turn things around for the Vikes-as he went 58 yards to Sidney Rice on a play where Frank Walker couldn’t have interfered more. After a Ryan Longwell FG put the Vikings back ahead, the Ravens had a chance to win the game, but a bad snap from Matt Katula lead to a bad miss from Steve Hauschka at the gun.

Week 9 @ Cincinnati:
1st half-Trailing 17-0, the Ravens got the ball back with 2:52 to play and a chance to do SOMETHING before going to the locker room. It took just one play for Joe Flacco to be picked by Leon Hall on an unnecessary deep ball, and the Bengals took that same advantage to the locker room.
2nd half-Despite a Steve Hauschka miss with 6:12 to play, the Ravens still had a chance trailing 17-7 late. Approaching midfield on the better side of the 2 minute warning and with timeouts still in their pockets, everything fell apart. Joe Flacco was sacked on 3 straight plays, and the Bengals essentially clinched the AFC North.

Week 11 vs. Indianapolis:
1st half-The Colts punctuated an 80 yard drive with a 5 yard TD by Joseph Addai to put the Colts ahead 14-9. After some strange play-calling, the Ravens DID still manage to cut the Colts’ lead to 14-12 going to the break, but better use of the clock could have taken them the extra 18 yards into the endzone.
2nd half-Trailing 17-15, the Ravens were marching towards a sure-fire FG or a hopeful TD to re-take the lead. But the drive fell apart when Joe Flacco was intercepted by Gary Brackett on a short pass over the middle. After getting a stop, the Ravens had one more chance-but Ed Reed fumbled away a punt return on an unthinkable lateral attempt.

Week 13 @ Green Bay:
1st half-The Ravens had given up just 3 points when there were 5 minutes left on the clock. By the time they went to the half, they had given up 17. Sound familiar? Jermichael Finley and Donald Driver caught Aaron Rodgers TD’s to extend the lead. Unbelievably, the Ravens actually had a chance to get points before the half when they got the ball at the GB 37 with :32 to play and 2 timeouts-but they could get just 12 yards.
2nd half-Due to Joe Flacco throwing one of the worst interceptions in Ravens history, the final 5 minutes at Lambeau Field were mostly unnecessary. But the Pack rubbed salt in the wounds anyway, adding a Mason Crosby FG and finishing things with a Clay Matthews sack to finalize a 27-14 victory.

Week 16 @ Pittsburgh:
1st half-After driving into Steelers territory, a drive to tie the game or potentially go ahead was thwarted by an Ike Taylor sack. The Steelers responded by marching downfield, and a Ben Roethlisberger-Santonio Holmes TD extended their lead to 20-10. John Harbaugh decided for some inexplicable reason to call his final 2 timeouts in the last 35 seconds-saying he had hoped for a pass to set up a Hail Mary. It doesn’t make any more sense now than it did at the time.
2nd half-Trailing 23-20, the Ravens marched into PITT territory and were approaching Billy Cundiff FG range at the 35 when they faced 3rd and 7. Two LaMarr Woodley sacks later, the threat was over. The Ravens had the chance to get the ball back one more time thanks to a Tom Zbikowski INT return, but the play was negated by a Frank Walker illegal contact call.

Divisional Round @ Indianapolis:
1st half-Tied at 3, the Colts faced a 4th and 4 from the Baltimore 35 that had the Ravens stopped-they would have been in great position to try to take the lead going to the half. Not only did Joseph Addai pick up the first down, Peyton Manning ultimately found Austin Collie for what would end up being the game-winning TD. The Ravens got the ball back, but mixed a 1st down run with 2 incomplete passes-giving Indy one more chance. They made it count, as Reggie Wayne hauled in a short TD to take a 17-3 lead.
2nd half-As was the case in Green Bay, the final 5 minutes were mostly unnecessary. But the Colts made sure the Ravens didn’t get even as much as a glimmer of hope-as Antoine Bethea and Jerraud Powers wrapped the playoff victory up with interceptions.

As you can see, the struggles over the final 5 minutes were in every phase of the game. Untimely mistakes, bad play calling, clock mismanagement, errors in judgment, and lapses from the defense, offense and special teams. It wasn’t a season where Joe Flacco, the secondary, the O-Line or the coaching staff struggled in the final 5 minutes of halves-it was a season where EVERYONE struggled in the final 5 minutes of halves.

Ultimately, the responsibility to win the final 5 minutes probably does fall on the head coach. Managing what tend to be frenzied situations and having to make quick decisions are the responsibility of the man in charge-as there can only be one voice in the panic. The final 5 minutes would be the time where John Harbaugh needs to be able to veto a call from Cam Cameron, Greg Mattison OR Jerry Rosburg-or just make a call on his own.

But even if he chooses not to do that, the final 5 minutes are where attention to detail is most critical from a head coach. This has plagued Andy Reid throughout his career in Philadelphia, and is probably the biggest reason why Reid is thought of as a really good coach instead of a Super Bowl winning coach.

John Harbaugh just wrapped up his 2nd year as a head coach. He has time to change things. But with every issue the team faced this season-the final 5 minutes of each half were the most obvious place where this team lost 8 games.

Losing 8 games won’t be acceptable if this team wants to take steps forward in the future.

You deserve props…..

1-Michael Vick, Bruce Gradkowski, Matt Hasselbeck, David Garrard and Chad Henne

Um, this is a WEIRD list of quarterbacks. Sorta reminds me of a bad “Mix 106″-type of Holiday concert. (Not Mix 106 specifically, but stations like that.) You know, stations across the country that are promoting something like a “Holiday Havoc” concert this December at their local arena and boast of lineup that features one fairly big act that isn’t necessarily big anymore, like……then matches it up with a rock act that had one pop hit but whose music otherwise probably wouldn’t go over so well with the “Mix” crowd…….then throws in a country singer who has a couple of hits and feels really out of place trying to fire up a crowd…….and throws in a R&B act that you really had no idea was even still playing music; then mixes it with a pop act that absolutely no one is interested in seeing because their one hit came at the beginning of the year and they have followed it up with NOTHING. And they finish it off with ONE relevant act whose music no one is familiar with. So, it would basically be like this…..

“SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! Mix 96 invites you down to Memorial Arena for Holiday Havoc, the HOTTEST SHOW TO EVER HIT THE METROPOLITAN AREA! Starring…..”

You know what-I probably would have been confused into going to that show at some point in my life.

2-Roy “Big Country” Nelson and Kimbo Slice

You mean to tell me that Bachman managed to WIN The Ultimate Fighter???

bigcountry

3-Greg McElroy and Mark Ingram

Wha….whaddya think Mark Ingram will wear to his Heisman Trophy presentation?

Alabama’s win over Florida in the SEC Championship Game was the most exciting thing that happened in Tuscaloosa since the discovery of indoor plumbing.

Last week.

(Edit from GMC: I’m kidding. Lot of good things have come from Alabama. Almost all of which are in the picture below.)

bama

4-Jonathan Stewart, Matt Forte and Brandon Jacobs

So……the Giants swept the Cowboys, huh? Had to be the most exciting thing that happened in New Jersey this week, right? I mean, other than when this guy took his shirt off……

jersey

5-Marc Mesaros

As a proud Perry Hall alum, I will admit that I can’t REALLY root for Eastern Tech. BUT-I guess I can feel happy for the Mavericks……mostly because they’re the only school near Rossville Blvd. that has lights on their tennis courts-which means a LOT to this guy right here. PLUS, EVT is pretty close to a certain establishment on Route 40 that I have been known to frequent due to their delicious hoagie sandwiches. They’re not a sponsor, so I won’t refer to them by name-let’s just call them “Awaw.”

AND let’s just say that this is arguably their greatest creation…..

wawa

6-Scottie Reynolds, Patrick Patterson, Kyle Singler and Reggie Holmes

There was a moment in Sunday night’s Maryland-Villanova game at Verizon Center where fans in the Terrapins student section noticed someone rooting for the Wildcats and chanted the ever-classy “Ass-hole! Ass-hole!” It gave me a moment to stand up and yell “Yeah, no one should ever root for a team other than mine ever!”

And while I still don’t care for Villanova, I WILL admit to being a fan of Villanova grad Jackie…..

jackie

7-Chad Ochocinco, Antonio Gates, Larry Fitzgerald, Pierre Garcon and Brandon Marshall

Yeah, why not……

And apparently there’s a song, too. It’s a shame they announced the Grammy nominees before now……

8-Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh and Brook Lopez

THE NETS WON! THE NETS WON! THE NETS WON! (And then lost again) BUT WHO CARES THE NETS WON!

And with all due respect to Brook Lopez, I tend to prefer Brooke Burke….

brooke

9-Nicklas Backstrom

Boy, I guess that Ovechkin fella really isn’t that necessary, huh? I don’t know a whole heck of a lot about the NHL, but I know that winning by a score of 8-2 is pretty good. Or at least better than losing 8-2.

Not that I’m worried about my Flyers, because we still look AWESOME in our new commercial…..

10-Tianna Hawkins and Elena Delle Donne

I’m posing the Elena Delle Donne dilemma to you. I can’t say anything about a lazy eye; because I know someone who has an eye lazier than Ray Bachman….

eye

But as far as the Delaware hoops star is concerned…..it’s up to you…….

edd

11-Jim Furyk

Won Tiger Woods’ golf tournament this weekend. But there was a much bigger story this weekend in the world of golf. A MUCH bigger story in the world of golf. We all know what I’m talking about.

That’s right, the PGA Tour is coming to Malaysia for the Asia Pacific Golf Classic!!!!

hallelujah

It is truly a great time to be a golf fan!

12-Pete Carroll

You’re probably thinking “But Glenn, didn’t USC somehow manage to LOSE to Arizona-forcing them to have to accept a bid to the Emerald Bowl???” Yes they did. But that wasn’t NEARLY the biggest Trojans-related story this week. (My apologies for using the term “biggest” before discussing Charlie Weis. PURELY coincidence.) But outgoing Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis allegedly claimed Pete Carroll was living with a student out in Malibu!

Carroll denied the claims-but if they’re accurate, would anyone blame him???

usc

13-Sandra Bullock and Quinton Aaron

The Blind Side overtook New Moon for the #1 spot this weekend at the box office-which is actually AMAZING. Like, REALLY amazing all things considered.

I’m not sure what’s more amazing-The Blind Side becoming Number 1, or the fact that there’s a new movie coming out called “Nine” I’ve never heard of where Penelope Cruz looks like THIS……

14-Saturday Night Live

Look, the Tiger Woods thing was funny…..

But in the world Kenan Thompson, it can’t TOUCH “What Up With That?”

The highlight of the night however was CLEARLY Rihanna and Shy Ronnie…..

And the Muppets/Blake Lively weren’t too bad either….

15-Smoked Turkey BBQ, Jalapeno Cornbread and Shiner Bock

(I forgot to take pictures of my dinner Sunday night. My apologies!)

shiner

While in Chinatown last night for the BB&T Classic, my friend (who went to Oklahoma but is actually a mostly good person!) suggested we go for BBQ. While I questioned the idea of Capital Q BBQ there in Chinatown—I must give her props. Except for the fact that she is now 0-1 in Terps games she has watched with me.

You got lucky……

1-Drew Brees and Robert Meachem

Ummm……REALLY?!?!?!

Look-I’m rooting for the Ravens, period. But if for some reason this goes the wrong way, I’m rooting for the Saints. Either way, I’m laughing at the Redskins.

2-Hunter Lawrence and Devan Cunningham

No…….

No!!!!!!!!

Seriously, Now Bachman’s gonna think HE could catch a winning 2 point conversion in a college football game!

3-Joakim Noah

I know Joakim Noah won two NCAA Tournament titles at Florida, but what the hell is he thinking here????

Joakim-LeBron James is SIGNIFICANTLY better than you. As in, your names should NEVER be spoken in the same sentence. Just shut up, clown.

4-Tony Pike and Jonathan Dwyer

In honor of Georgia Tech winning the ACC Championship, here’s some OutKast….

Is that a cop out for me? Yes. It’s been a long weekend…..

5-Bob Bradley

USA-England in the World Cup?!?!?! This one’s a no-brainer…..

Kelly Osbourne is British…..

Carrie Underwood is American……

6-Jamie Jungers

Good for you, Eldrick.

7-Everyone who was NOT thrown from a horse at some point this weekend

You’re doing better than “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet”…..

(Edit from GMC: That’s her shoulder, kids.)

I guess it could be worse. For example, you could be EJ Henderson…..

Or Greg Oden……

You’re a zero……..

The BCS

Look, Alabama-Texas is the right matchup; there’s no doubt about that. But tell that to Cincinnati, TCU and Boise State fans……like Chrissy Popadics…..

chrissy

I’ve changed my mind. Let the Broncos play for the title. Or just give it to them.

No Ravens-we save them for Tuesday and the “Tuesday Top 7.” Also, considering most human beings EVERYWHERE started their weekend on Thanksgiving; we’ll start there for our qualifications to make the list. And while I realize I’ve somehow managed to stretch a 4 day weekend into 5 days due to my tardiness-deal with it. It’s my list.

You deserve props…..

1-Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Chris Redman and Alex Smith

Do you think it might chap Aaron Rodgers’ ass a bit that every time he does something awesome, ol’ Brett comes along and does something even a bit better?

It sorta reminds me of my childhood friend Scott Meredith…..

meredith

(Edit from GMC: This is NOT a picture of Scott Meredith. Well, apparently it’s a picture of SOMEONE whose name is Scott Meredith, but I only know that because I Google image searched “Scott Meredith”. I guess it is possible that the person pictured above IS my friend Scott Meredith, but I would think I would know Scott Meredith if I saw Scott Meredith. Hey! There’s a squirrel over there……)

Ol’ Scott Meredith loved to one up me growing up. He was a year older, but we were in the same grade.

I remember getting a double in the 6th inning to tie a Little League game; and Scott Meredith of course hit the walk-off homer to steal all of the attention.

I once got 3rd place in a science fair, only to find out that the winner was Scott Meredith-and he actually discovered something that our teachers thought was a new addition to the periodic table of elements. (Turned out later it was just lard.)

I thought I was the COOLEST person alive when I figured out how to play “Basket Case” by Green Day on my clarinet in 6th grade after months of practice……that is until Scott Meredith wandered into the band room, picked up a sax for the first time and NAILED “Peaches” by the Presidents of the United States of America.

And in 7th grade when I had my first REAL kiss from a gal named Rachael who I called my “girlfriend” but I’m pretty sure I never went on a single actual “date” with, I couldn’t wait to tell all of my friends. That is until Scott Meredith came in the next day and introduced us to his wife Molly and twin sons Dave and Donny.

Son of a bitch.

2-Colt McCoy, Tony Pike, Noel Devine, Tim Tebow, Ryan Broyles, Toby Gerhart and Ryan Williams

Look, Colt McCoy and Tim Tebow would be #1 and #2 on my list-and it probably wouldn’t be close-but I’m having to accept the fact that Stanford RB Toby Gerhart is a LEGITIMATE Heisman Trophy candidate-especially after his performance in the Cardinal’s big win over Notre Dame Saturday night. Why is this stunning? Mostly because Gerhart is WHITE-which finally gives us an answer to the question “Are there any good white Running Backs anymore?” Sadly, it doesn’t change the fact that we still can’t dance…..

3-Da’Sean Butler, Chris Singleton and Jon Scheyer

I actually break out in hives whenever I say something nice about anyone from Duke. Except of course when I say “Duke has very nice average looking women”……

duke

4-Knowshon Moreno, Larry Johnson and Justin Forsett

I thought the NFL Network might actually give us a decent game by adding Giants/Broncos, I WAS WRONG. Thanksgiving football just SUCKED this year. In fact, Thanksgiving games were so bad this year they might as well have just let this team play……

orioles

5-Zac MacMath and Lori Bjork

Congratulations to the Maryland soccer team for reaching the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament, and to the Terrapins Womens’ Hoops team for beating Drexel. Is that done? Can I move on? Okay thanks. Who wants to see what former Tennessee women’s basketball star Brittany Jackson looks like these days????

brittany

Thank God, I really didn’t have any other material prepared.

6-Alex Lachman

Has a name that rhymes with Ray Bachman. Who apparently got to hang out with Jack Black recently…..

td

In all seriousness though-congratulations to Johns Hopkins. At least until lacrosse season. Then I hope you lose 40-0 to the Terps.

7-Miles Austin, Terrell Owens and Antonio Gates

With the Ravens having no wide receivers under contract after this season, I thought I would poke around to see what wide receivers might be available in the offseason-and wouldn’t you know it, both Austin (6’3″), and T.O. (6’3″) are available. Who else? Try Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Braylon Edwards, Antonio Bryant, Malcolm Floyd and this guy…….

devard

I’m just kidding about the last one. Devard is actually under contract for 3 years. No, really.

8-Eric Fehr

The NHL is happening. And wouldn’t you know, Elisha Cuthbert dates Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames. AND, she just celebrated her 27th birthday! And, this is WAY more interesting than me actually talking about the Capitals!

cuthbert

(Edit from GMC: Attention Sean Avery: there will be many more hockey players who fight for your “sloppy seconds.”)

9-Roy Williams and Tom Izzo

Both reached milestones over the weekend. Sadly for them, Izzo didn’t reach the milestone of “Beating Florida Saturday night” and Williams didn’t reach the milestone of “not looking like Huckleberry Hound.”

I was thinking about what would happen if Roy Williams were to consider running for governor of the state of North Carolina. For god’s sake, who would beat him? I mean, other than this guy…..

10-Clint Session and Darrelle Revis

Apparently Jets gameday host (Does she still have that job?) Jenn Sterger has decided to remove her boobs. I think I speak on behalf of God himself when I ask, “Why?”

That being said, I’d like to throw in another plug for our friend “ay52″, who did something recently. Something about a new purse, maybe?

11-Emmanuel Gbor, Epe Henriques and Zack Zwinak

My roommate (“The Luckiest Dang Roommate on the Face of the Planet”)’s nephew plays for Eastern Tech, so I’ll be rooting for them this weekend-despite their close proximity to my beloved Perry Hall Gators. I’ll also be rooting for the Joppatowne Mariners, mostly because Mariner Point Park in Joppatowne was….ahem….”where I became a man.”

(Editor’s note: By “where I became a man”, I actually mean “I TOTALLY shut out my dad in a game of bocce.” What did you think I meant?)

12-Chad Ochocinco and Grady Sizemore

The most awkward moment of my life happened when I was living in Phoenix. I was sitting at dinner with some friends, and wanted to show everyone an awesome picture I had taken from the sidelines of the Arizona State-Cal game that night with a friend who was seated in the wheelchair section and had awesomely painted his face to celebrate his love of the Sun Devils. A friend’s girlfriend (we’ll call her “Delilah”) was seated next to me, and was laughing at the picture. Suddenly, she took it upon herself to flip to the next picture in the phone. Not good.

“Is that your thumb?”

No, it wasn’t my thumb. And I wasn’t a hundred percent certain how the body parts could be confused-but maybe that was a bad sign for me.

Thankfully I’m not a famous athlete, or that cell phone picture may have been headed straight to Deadspin. Grady Sizemore found that out; and women worldwide are suddenly thinking about becoming Indians fans….

grady

(Edit from GMC: That was BY FAR AND AWAY the most SFW photo in the bunch. Props to Sizemore for his use of a mug in another pic. Also, I hope the chick was worth it.)

And another thing, Chad Ochocinco in a Snuggie is awesome to me for some reason; even if I don’t know why……

ocho

13-Graham Gano and Damon Duval

Congratulations (I guess?) to the Las Vegas Locomotives (“Locos” for short, I believe) for winning the UFL Championship, and to the Montreal Alouettes for winning the CFL’s Grey Cup. A lot of people will think it’s ironic that Gano made the kick to win a title after he was cut in Baltimore in favor of Steve Hauschka; but I’m just happy for Gano; who’s a really good guy.

I also found it a bit strange to find out; but apparently THIS is the prize that goes to all of the players who are on the winning team in the Grey Cup…..

pie

(Editor’s note: Yes that IS a maple syrup pie. No I DON’T want to know what it tastes like.)

14-“I Want You Back” by Jackson 5

I wandered into Federal Hill Saturday night to spend the night at Charm City’s finest music venue-the 8×10 Club. (Edit from GMC: No offense to Rams Head Live-which is the finest mainstream music venue in Charm City.) I took in my friends Jimmie’s Chicken Shack and an OUTSTANDING young band called Brian Stewart & The Tell-Tale Hearts. Both were really, REALLY good. But there was another guy who went on stage first (and I WISH I could tell you the guy’s name-because he was really good too); who dialed up a REALLY cool version of the song. It just made me think “Why isn’t this song celebrated the way it should be?”…..

I was also directed to this-KT Tunstall’s version of the tune. Not too bad either……

You know, maybe every band should just come up with a version of this song.

Yes, that IS leftover turkey and mashed potatoes with barbeque sauce on wheat bread. When you do it yourself tomorrow, thank me.

You got lucky…….

1-David Akers and Vince Young

Vince Young’s drive to beat the Cardinals was something to behold. But relax Arizona, you still have plenty going for you……

2-Tiger Woods

Look, did Eldrick sleep with this Rachel Uchitel chick? Who knows…

uchitel

Did he crash his car because he was drunk? Who knows.
Did he suffer injuries to his face because he was beat up by his wife? Who knows.
Is “Kobe Special” the coolest new term to have entered the English vocabulary? Hell yes.

3-Mike London and Brian Billick

I couldn’t be happier for all of the awesome success Virginia and Notre Dame are currently having with their respective programs. Just two excellent programs who deserve ALL of the success they have found. May I make a suggestion for the next head coach?

chuck

4-Nikolay Davydenko

Nikolay Davydenko won the ATP Tour Finals in London. Nicolette Sheridan is like 46 and somehow still smoking hot….

5-1988-89 Miami Heat and 1999-2000 Los Angeles Clippers

I was trying to think of some words to describe just how terrible the New Jersey Nets have been this season; so I decided to reach out to Thesaurus.com. Here are some options…..

abhorrent
appalling
atrocious
awful
beastly
dire
disastrous
disturbing
dreadful
extreme
frightful
ghastly
gruesome
harrowing
hideous
horrendous
horrid
horrifying
loathsome
monstrous
odious
offensive
petrifying
poor
repulsive
revolting
rotten
severe
shocking
unfortunate
unnerving
unpleasant
unwelcome
vile

Any of those work for you? If not, there was one more word, but it read SO extreme I’m not sure even the Nets can qualify…..

“Angelosian”

6-Stephen A. Smith

Is DESPERATE for Allen Iverson to extend this whole “retirement” thing somehow. And I mean “DESPERATE.” Otherwise, his existence is basically built around this at this point…..

cheesesteak

You know, that actually doesn’t seem that bad-other than having to live in Philadelphia…..

7-Those of you-like me-who did NOT have to attend a high school reunion this weekend

But when the Class of 2001 gets together in 24 months, I will ABSOLUTELY try to find Tina Montalvo and dance to THIS song…..

Most significant musical contribution of my generation.

You’re a zero…….

Anyone who doesn’t vote for Art Modell or Roberto Alomar to make the Hall of Fame this year

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 10 November 2009 by Glenn Clark

Don’t have much time to contribute today. I was surprised by John Harbaugh’s candor yesterday, but it was a refreshing change of pace. I still think he needs to cool down on being so rough around the edges. I know it seems trivial, but I truly believe uptight coaches tend to not handle adversity quite as well.

But good for Harbs for taking responsibility for the team’s struggles, emphatically stating that HE needed to improve, and admitting that he screwed up in making the comments he made about Dallas and Philadelphia.

Now he just has to figure the football part out. No problem, right?

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Ravens Report Card

Posted on 09 November 2009 by Glenn Clark

Quarterback: C-

This seems harsh, but Joe was terrible yesterday. Save for one decent drive, he wouldn’t have gotten even a passing grade yesterday. It was arguably his worst game as a Raven. I talked after the Patriots game about Joe needing to come up biggest when the team needs him the most (the way Tom Brady and company tend to)-and the first two drives of the game were when the Ravens needed Flacco the most. He didn’t deliver. He needs to figure out how tall Mark Clayton (and Ray Rice) are, too. If he continues to overthrow those guys, he’s gonna get them killed, or he’s gonna get picked more.

Running Backs: B

Don’t blame Ray Rice for this one. He had the heart of a champion, and was the best player on the field wearing white. Should the coaching staff be using Le’Ron McClain (who played well) and Willis McGahee more? Maybe, but not because Ray Rice isn’t playing well.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: C

No terrible mistakes by this unit, but not a particularly good performance either. Derrick Mason had to play defensive back more than receiver on a couple of plays, and Todd Heap had no idea where the first down marker was on that 3rd and 5. It was not a great day for them.

Offensive Line: C

The 2nd half was PARTICULARLY ugly for this unit. I’m not sure how much the team worked no-huddle and with a huddle during the week, and if changing on the fly in Cincinnati hurt them; but the penalties in the 2nd half from Oher, Gaither and Grubbs were just unneccessary. Not a good day for the unit that had arguably been the best on the season.

Defensive Line: D

This unit CLEARLY missed Haloti Ngata. They got almost NO pressure on Carson Palmer-and certainly no game changing plays (even Terrell Suggs’ sack was for a grand total of -1 yard). Cedric Benson should not be gauging the Ravens defense ONCE-more or less twice. It all started up front, and it wasn’t good.

Linebackers: B-

I’m not REALLY sure why I am giving them this good of a grade; I guess it’s because Ray Lewis really played with a lot of heart, and the unit as a whole did make some plays, even if they were beat a few times too. This unit is going to have to apply more of the pressure, and has to be more of a punishing group. They have failed in these areas thus far, but have tackled better than the rest of the defense….I guess.

Secondary: D-

Look, I don’t think Champ Bailey could have stayed with the Bengals’ receivers given the time Palmer had to throw the ball; and Chad Ochocinco made some AWESOME grabs; but this was poor. Lardarius Webb did give some solid effort when he came into the game, but he has gone untested as far as actual cover abilities. There is no answer to improve this group. When you have an average secondary, you MUST get better pressure. This combination hasn’t worked the way they had hoped.

Special Teams: D

Steve Hauschka’s miss was critical, but he wasn’t the only part of this unit that struggled. Penalties on special teams are really unthinkable, and even Sam Koch struggled. It’s infectious right now.

Coaching: D-

Maybe the worst game of the season for the entire staff. Unprepared from the beginning, and not enough corrections in-game. Greg Mattison deserves SOME credit for taking away the middle of the field AFTER the Bengals’ first 3 drives, but this was NOT a good game from them. The execution wasn’t much better, but John Harbaugh and company deserve to take their licks after this. WHY DOES CAM CAMERON CALL JUMP BALLS FOR 5’10″ RECEIVERS?!?!?! Ugh….
