OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens (12-4) held their final open practice Friday at 1 Winning Drive ahead of Sunday’s AFC Wild Card playoff showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) at Arrowhead Stadium.

The brother of Ravens safety Ed Reed (Brian Reed) went missing Friday in Louisiana, according to WWL-TV in New Orleans.

The younger Reed reportedly jumped into the Mississippi River in St. Charles, La. to elude authorities. Police attempted to stop Brian Reed Friday morning when his car matched the description of a car believed to have driven another car off the road.

According to the WWL report, police believe the younger Reed may have been driving a stolen car.

When reached for comment Friday by WNST.net, a source very close to Ed Reed said the Pro Bowl safety had no comment and was continuing to gather information.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh said in a Friday night conference call he had not yet had a chance to talk to his star defender.

“I love Ed Reed” said Harbaugh. “Our thoughts and our prayers are with the Reed family. We’re just praying like crazy that Ed’s brother is okay.”

INJURY REPORT: After missing practice Wednesday & Thursday, DT Haloti Ngata (thigh) and LB Terrell Suggs (knee) both returned to practice Friday.

Harbaugh said Friday “I feel good about them” and added “I think they’ll be okay” for Sunday’s game.

Suggs was a bit more coy about his status for Sunday’s game, claiming he was “50-50″ to play.

Ngata and Suggs were both listed as questionable for Sunday’s game, as were S Tom Zbikowski (back), LB Dannell Ellerbe (head), LB Tavares Gooden (shoulder), CB Josh Wilson (head) and S Ed Reed (chest). Those six were all listed as limited participants Thursday.

Five Ravens were listed as probable for Sunday’s game; LB Jameel McClain (back), C Matt Birk (knee), WR Derrick Mason (abs/ankle), OT Michael Oher (knee/ankle) and WR/KR David Reed (wrist).

For the Chiefs, G Brian Waters (illness) and WR Quinten Lawrence (illness) were listed as probable for Sunday’s game.

HARBAUGH’S BROTHER JOINS NFL RANKS: Jim Harbaugh, the younger brother of John Harbaugh and a former Ravens quarterback; agreed Friday to a five year deal to leave Stanford and become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’m very happy he’s not in the AFC” the elder Harbaugh said Friday night in a conference call.

With the Ravens slated to face the NFC West next season, the two coaches will have a chance to face off in Charm City.

“My dad (former Western Michigan & Western Kentucky coach Jack Harbaugh) said he’s just going to take a walk during that one” John Harbaugh joked.

Harbaugh told reporters his younger brother consulted with Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti during his decision making process.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens (12-4) returned to practice Thursday at 1 Winning Drive, inching closer to an AFC Wild Card playoff showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

After missing practice Wednesday, S Ed Reed (chest) and C Matt Birk (knee) each returned to the practice field Thursday. Reed was a limited participant, Birk participated fully.

DT Haloti Ngata (thigh) and LB Terrell Suggs (knee) did not participate in practice for a second straight day. Ngata was forced to leave the team’s Week 17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium in the 2nd half.

“They’re boycotting, they don’t like the cold weather” joked Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison about the absence of the two Pro Bowl defenders. “It’s not a concern. They’ll both be fine. It’s us knowing where we are in the season, knowing we’ve had a lot of football games. Those two guys have played so well and they understand the defense so well that if they do have a little bump or bruise or something like that it’s best to get them 100% rather than running around.”

S Tom Zbikowski (back), was a limited participant in practice for the second straight day. He’s hoping to return to the field for the first time since leaving the team’s Week 14 win over the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium in the first half. Zbikowski was listed as a limited participant Wednesday.

Zbikowski told reporters Thursday he “feels better”, but wouldn’t commit to being ready to return to face KC.

LB Dannell Ellerbe (head), LB Tavares Gooden (shoulder), LB Jameel McClain (back) and CB Josh Wilson (head) were all limited participants in practice for a second straight day. WR Derrick Mason (abs/ankle), OT Michael Oher (knee/ankle) and WR/KR David Reed (wrist) were all full participants for a second straight day.

For the Chiefs, WR Dwayne Bowe (illness) returned to practice after missing Wednesday. Bowe was listed as a full participant. G Brian Waters (illness) missed a second straight day, WR Quinten Lawrence (illness) also missed practice Thursday.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens (12-4) returned to practice Wednesday at 1 Winning Drive, continuing preparations for Sunday’s AFC Wild Card playoff battle with the Kansas City Chiefs (10-6) at Arrowhead Stadium.

DT Haloti Ngata was announced Wednesday as the Ravens 2010 Most Valuable Player award, as voted on by media members who cover the team on a daily basis. (This columnist was amongst those who voted for Ngata.)

Ngata set a career high with 5.5 sacks this season and tied career highs with 63 tackles and 5 pass deflections.

“That’s pretty cool” said Ngata after being informed he had won. “I felt like this year has been a little different just with my pass rush, I felt like I got a little better there. Hopefully I can continue to improve and just get better. Hopefully I can be around (Baltimore) more often, because I love being here, I love the guys, I love the fans.”

Ngata will be an important factor as the Ravens go up against the league’s top rushing offense (164.2 yards per game) Sunday in KC.

“(They’re a) great running team, I think everybody knows that” said Ngata. “Their O-Linemen (are) experienced, they’ve got a lot of guys who have been around and they do well moving guys around. Hopefully we can do what we want to do and stop the run first and make them a one dimensional team.”

Ngata was an important cog for a Ravens defense that was pretty good against the run (ranked 5th in the NFL), allowing just 93.9 yards per game.

“We love when teams like to run” added Ngata. “If we can take away their best thing, that’s an advantage for us.”

The Chiefs finished the year with two backs amongst the Top 20 in rushing in the league. RB Jamaal Charles (who finished 2nd in the league with 1,467 yards to go with give touchdowns) is somewhat similar to Tennessee Titans RB Chris Johnson according to Ngata.

“(He’s) just real shifty and quick to the hole. He’s just so fast and quick, he does a lot of things really well. He definitely is different from last year.”

Chiefs RB Thomas Jones also ranked in the Top 20 amongst the league’s rushing leaders; finishing with 896 yards and 6 TD’s.

“Jones is a little bigger” said Ngata. “I think he’s able to hit between the tackles a little bit better. He’s a little bit more patient than Charles.”

In their 2009 matchup at M&T Bank Stadium, the Ravens allowed the Chiefs just 29 yards rushing, including only 8 yards for Charles.

Ngata succeeds RB Ray Rice, who was voted the team’s MVP in 2009.

CARR NAMED “GOOD GUY”: In addition to Team MVP, reporters covering the team on a daily basis also voted a winner of the annual “Media Good Guy” award.

CB Chris Carr was announced as the winner of the award for the 2010 season Wednesday.

“If I won, everybody else must be pretty bad” Carr joked. “I understand that the fans want to hear truth. I try never to lie. Maybe I won’t say how I really feel, but I won’t go up there and give a lie to you guys. I always try to be insightful and truthful to everybody because fans want to hear stuff. They want to be honest and they want accountability as well. I just try to do that every week.

LB Jarret Johnson had received the award in 2009.

INJURY REPORT: Four Ravens did not participate in practice Wednesday.

C Matt Birk (knee), LB Terrell Suggs (knee), S Ed Reed (chest) and Ngata (thigh) were all held out. None are believed to be in serious jeopardy of missing Sunday’s game.

S Tom Zbikowski (back) returned to the practice field Wednesday for the first time since leaving the team’s Week 14 win over the Houston Texans early. He was one of five Ravens who were limited participants in practice. LB Dannell Ellerbe (head), LB Tavares Gooden (shoulder), LB Jameel McClain (back) and CB Josh Wilson (head) were also limited participants.

Head Coach John Harbaugh said he’s “optimistic” Zbikowski can see the field Sunday.

WR/KR David Reed (wrist/head) was a full participant in practice Wednesday; he hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in the team’s Week 15 win over the New Orleans Saints. WR Derrick Mason (abs/ankle) and OT Michael Oher (knee/ankle) were also full participants.

Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe (illness) missed practice Wednesday. Head Coach Todd Haley did not seem concerned about Bowe’s Sunday status during his Wednesday conference call with Charm City reporters.

BALTIMORE — I wouldn’t be unfair at all to say that Baltimore Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh sometimes likes to have fun with the truth.

After the team’s Week 12 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Harbaugh told reporters he was unaware of the fact that the Pittsburgh Steelers had gone to overtime and nearly lost to the Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“I didn’t know about the Steelers game until right now” Harbaugh had said. “That was one I missed when the scores came up unfortunately.”

It was probably the right thing to say in the moment, but no one was buying it. In fact, Harbaugh made it apparently shortly after the press conference ended that he actually HAD been keeping tabs on what was going on with the Ravens’ AFC North rivals.

It wasn’t the only time during his first three seasons in Charm City that Harbaugh has…well…”stretched” the truth.

Four days before the Ravens played their regular season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium, Harbaugh made another statement that some folks expressed skepticism towards.

With the Ravens’ fate in the race for the AFC North title tied directly to the Steelers’ game against the Cleveland Browns Sunday, there was a thought process that Harbaugh could pull starters in the 2nd half should the Steelers game get out of hand. Harbaugh said that wouldn’t be happening.

“No I won’t do that based on Pittsburgh’s score. We’ll just play it like we’ll always play it when we try to win.”

Things got out of hand for the Steelers Sunday. They had a 31-3 halftime advantage at Cleveland Browns Stadium; a lead that ballooned to as much as 41-3 in the 2nd half before ultimately ending in a 41-9 win for the Steelers, clinching the division title.

The Ravens (12-4) would eventually hold on for a 13-7 win over the Bengals (4-12). Had the score not been so close, perhaps backup QB Marc Bulger and other reserves would have seen more time. Yet John Harbaugh….true to his word…never pulled Ravens starters in Baltimore.

“I think we focused on winning the game” said Harbaugh of the decision.

WR Derrick Mason was more emphatic in saying Harbaugh made the right decision.

“We didn’t have the game won (at halftime). The score was 6-0, and why pull the starters when we’re not consistently going down the field? We wanted to go out with a win and go into the playoffs with momentum.”

The Ravens DID get the win. I’m not sure how much momentum comes from having to cling to dear life late against a team whose only postseason activity could be a coaching change, but they did get the win.

And fortunately for Harbaugh, the win doesn’t appear to have come at any great expense.

CB Josh Wilson and LB Dannell Ellerbe both left the game due to first half shoulder stingers. An argument could be made that the Steelers game was still in hand before either player was hurt.

DT Haloti Ngata, OT Michael Oher and S Ed Reed all left early with various bumps and bruises in the 2nd half. Team spokesperson Kevin Byrne declined to offer any further information on the injuries; saying the Ravens prevented players from returning due to “precautionary” reasons.

If that proves to be true and none of the players are affected by the injuries moving forward into the playoffs; Harbaugh won’t feel any repercussions of the decision. For his part, Reed downplayed the significance of his injury following the game.

But if Ngata or Oher were to be forced to sit out the Ravens’ Wild Card playoff game, the second guessing would reach a fever pitch around Charm City.

Harbaugh faced a difficult decision. Throughout the week, he preached the importance of Sunday’s game to players knowing a first round bye and a home playoff game could still be within reach.

By benching players at halftime, Harbaugh would have run the risk of saying “this game is the most important game we’ll play all season” only to follow it up with “just kidding.”

(I think it goes without saying that those weren’t direct quotes, right?)

Even had Harbaugh thought it was best to pull players, there’s no guarantee those players would have gone for it. Not only did Mason appear opposed to the idea, but Reed mentioned after the game he had actually been approached by the staff about not playing in the second half.

“You want to continue to play” said the Pro Bowl safety. “Next week wasn’t even here yet.”

Had other players opposed the idea of leaving the game, it would have been up to Harbaugh to force his hand; which could have created an uncomfortable situation for the team right before the postseason began.

Had RB Ray Rice or QB Joe Flacco gone down with a torn ACL in the 2nd half; that uncomfortable situation would have looked like a much more desirable outcome.

Hopefully Ngata, Oher, Reed, et. al. will be back on the field for the playoff opener and this topic will never come up again.

John Harbaugh was honest this time. What happened in Pittsburgh had no bearing on what the Ravens did.

If the Ravens are shorthanded in the postseason, he’ll probably wish he would have been lying.
