Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 23 October 2008 by Glenn Clark

I hate talking about race.I mean, I REALLY hate talking about race.

But I can’t help but think that maybe the Suggs comments were fueled by race.

The 2 Live Stews are very recognizable in the black community; especially somewhere like Atlanta. They set up Terrell Suggs with a question about whether or not a black QB should be playing in Baltimore.

Terrell Suggs may have had no choice but to answer the way he did.

For Terrell Suggs to have answered; “No, Joe Flacco is our quarterback and that’s the way it’s gonna be” might not have been received well in the black community. Maybe I’m wrong about that; but I think Flacco almost had to say what he said given the circumstances.

Does it make what he said okay? Not necessarily. But I also don’t think his comments are a big deal. I don’t think he said he didn’t believe in Joe Flacco. I think he simply attempted to support his teammate Troy Smith. And MAYBE, just MAYBE; the Ravens WOULD be a better team if Troy Smith was on the field for at least PART of games.

But I don’t think this is the issue that some of our callers made it out to be this morning. I really think this is a non-issue; and won’t be an issue unless Flacco’s struggles worsen over the next few weeks.

And as far as the “bounty” is concerned; let’s be real. This isn’t the first time there’s been a bounty out for a NFL player. And trust me; EVERYONE wants to take a shot at Hines Ward.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

-I hope Drew Forrester is wrong about Chris McAlister. I hope he IS back next season. But it isn’t pretty.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 01 October 2008 by Glenn Clark

Here’s my own Tuesday Top 7 on Wednesday……

7-Ben Grubbs

He manned up by coming in on defense on 3rd and goal in the 4th quarter. If the Steelers had punched it in; that game is over.

6-Chris McAlister

It wasn’t his best game FOR SURE. But you can still see how much a team’s offensive gameplan changes JUST because he’s on the field. He’s always a difference maker.

5-Jason Brown

He continues to control the interior part of the offensive line; and has been the Ravens’ top O-Lineman all season.

4-Joe Flacco

The 3rd and long pass to Derrick Mason during the game-tying drive in the 4th quarter is proof that Joe Flacco is a MAN. He made mistakes, but he certainly manned up in the 4th.

3-Haloti Ngata

Without his interception, the Steelers could have run and hid in the 1st half. They were dominating the ball early on; and the Ravens NEEDED the pick just to get something positive going.

2-Ray Lewis

Does anyone show more pride or passion on the field than Ray Lewis? He was all over the field AGAIN; and was once again the inspiration for the entire defense.

1-Derrick Mason

All he ever does is catch passes. When everyone in the world knew Derrick Mason was getting the ball; he still managed to get the ball. Truly remarkable performance.

Here’s my running total for the season so far….

1. Chris McAlister-16 points
2. Ray Lewis-12 points
3. Jason Brown, Derrick Mason-8 points
4. Haloti Ngata, Joe Flacco-7 points
5. Le’Ron McClain-6 points
6. Terrell Suggs-5 points
7. Yamon Figurs, Adam Terry-4 points
8. Jared Gaither-3 points
9. Jim Leonhard-2 points
10. Ed Reed-1 point

-The Terps will miss Adrian Moten. They’ll be okay against Virginia this week; but when Wake is trying to gut them with the run; they will wish they had another linebacker to step in and make some plays.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 30 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

I’m not going to back off my disapproval with the play calling at the end of the game last night. It didn’t cost the Ravens the game-that happened earlier. It actually cost them the chance to steal a game they probably shouldn’t have won at that point.

When the Ravens decided to throw the ball twice on 2nd down with a 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter; they were essentially saying that they wanted to give Joe Flacco the chance to put the game away. They trusted Flacco when the pressure wasn’t as palpable; but that trust disappeared on the final drive of regulation; DESPITE FLACCO PUTTING TOGETHER HIS BEST NFL DRIVE JUST ONE POSSESSION EARLIER!

The circumstances at the end of regulation did not necessitate that the Ravens play for overtime. They did the right thing by running on 1st and 2nd down; and were able to move to the 25 with just under a minute to play. From the 25; they needed to complete THREE 15 yard passes to have a shot at a comfortable Matt Stover field goal (Picking up 45 yards there would have brought you to Pittsburgh’s 30; setting up a 47 yard FG attempt). If you do not have THREE 15 yard passes in your 2 minute offense; you DON’T HAVE A 2 MINUTE OFFENSE!

There are some who will say that the Ravens couldn’t take the risk of turning the ball over there and giving Pittsburgh the chance to score before the end of regulation; but that entire argument is absurd. Let me explain this so that there is no misunderstanding……

Because of the structure of NFL overtimes; the rest of the game there is played under the same circumstances as those inside the final 2 minutes of regulation. Whether you give the Steelers the ball back with :40 left in regulation, or with 13 minutes left in overtime; if they score, they win! There’s NO ADVANTAGE TO GOING TO OVERTIME! In fact, playing for overtime means you’re willing to risk NOT EVER getting the ball back.

The only thing the Ravens accomplished by taking the ball out of Flacco’s hand in the final 2 minutes was to potentially make the other players on this team wonder how much this coaching staff really trusts their rookie QB.

But the game was LOST in the 3rd quarter. This was just a lost chance at STEALING a win.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….(As a note; internet problems have allowed me to only get HALF of what I wanted to link this morning. I am VERY sorry for that.)

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Just a few observations from Pittsburgh:
-Derrick Mason is going to be #1 in my delayed Tuesday Top 7. Is there any doubt?
-Steelers fans are EXTREMELY overrated. They’re not in the game; they’re not knowledgeable AT ALL; and they really don’t rally together AT ALL during the game; with the exception of their towel-waving.
-If the Ravens are a good team; they win a close game like last night’s. They’re not a good team yet.
-If the Ravens remain competitive; they will be kicking themselves for not finishing that win.
-Sam Koch’s shank and Jarrett Johnson’s bone-headed penalty may have been the turning point in the game; but they didn’t have to be. The play calling early in the 2nd half was very strange; and didn’t set the tone for a solid, ball controlling finish. When you’re ahead by ten points; you ideally use all 3 downs to get ten yards. When you’re trailing by 7; you want to pick up ten yards BEFORE you get to 3rd down. The play calling last night seemed to be a bit backwards in the 2nd half.
-It was great to take a trip like that with 60 Ravens fans. Not everyone was on their best behavior; but it was a lot of fun.

-Congratulations to Travis Baltz for being the first Terp to receive Player of the Week honors from the ACC this season. It was well deserved. Alex Wujciak was the best player on the field; but Travis Baltz really helped keep Maryland in the game in the 2nd quarter especially.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

The loss of both Dawan Landry of Samari Rolle will hurt the Ravens tonight; but as long as Chris McAlister is healthy; the Ravens will be okay. That being said; this game tonight will be particularly tough. I am very concerned about the potential for Joe Flacco to throw a costly interception; and for the offense to fall behind by ten points and force Flacco into throwing situations.

I think tonight will be a good learning experience for Joe; but I don’t know that it will result in a win. I know we will be loud as hell in the upper deck; but I’m not sure that will be enough.

20-10 Steelers.

I’ll continue my congratulations with my Perry Hall Gators for their stunning win at Hereford. What a remarkable football weekend!

-Is being named the Most Valuable Oriole this season similar to being named the prettiest girl at fat camp? I still won’t root for the name on the back of his jersey; but Aubrey Huff did have a nice season. Thankfully for everyone the nightmare is again over.

-Getting James Padgett should be good for Gary. Combining him with Jordan Williams and Sean Mosley might help this team build something.

I’ll see some of you in a few hours; and talk to the rest of you tomorrow!

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 26 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

I’ll give you my Ravens pick before we head out Monday morning. In the meantime, here are your college picks for the weekend:

Clemson 31, Maryland 28

This is going to be a GREAT game; and the loss won’t hurt Maryland that much. It is more important that Maryland win at Virginia and against Wake Forest at home. They can afford to lose this game and still stay in the ACC mix. They won’t get blown out and they will certainly cover.

Wake 34, Navy 20

Navy got a good win last week against Rutgers; and it will have to last them. Wake is ready for an offensive explosion following their struggles against Florida State; and the Mids will not likely stop them.

Towson 27, Columbia 22

Picking Towson has hurt me the last couple weeks; but getting home should help their confidence. Hopefully the weather will stay nice; because a sloppy running showdown would not suit the Tigers well.

Rutgers 45, Morgan State 17

If the Bears can be within 10 at the half, this counts as a win.

Perry Hall 27, Hereford 20

David Stinebaugh and the Gators owe the Bulls one from their loss last year. They’ll get revenge tonight.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

Ron Cook needs to man up and agree to appear on the show. I am going to email him again today; but I think he is going to decline.

It would be one thing for Ron Cook to have said that he thought the Steelers would win; it would be another thing for him to say he thought the Steelers would win the AFC North. But to predict a 35-10 blowout win; and to say that the Steelers have no competition in the AFC North despite the fact that they are currently in SECOND PLACE is much too strong a statement.

He needs to defend those statements to questioning from someone in this town; and Drew is certainly a fair person to allow him the opportunity to explain without being beraded. If you haven’t read what Ron Cook said; please click on the link to Marc Bouchard’s blog.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

We have a new internet service provider here at WNST; so this morning was a bit of a struggle for me to get Crabs and Beer together. There are a few things missing, so I apologize for that.

PLEASE join us tonight. I am honestly conflicted, as I want DESPERATELY to root for the Orioles, but part of me wouldn’t mind if the Rays clinched the AL East tonight. I’m just so sick of seeing the Red Sox and Yankees celebrate. The Rays are a good story. If the Orioles are ever relevant again, I will hate the Rays then; but for now, my hate is directed to Boston and New York.

We will be at the Wharf Rat at 5:30, and then we will be sitting in Section 308. And don’t forget to get on the Steelers bus either.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 23 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

Drew loves the Tuesday Top 7, and so do I! Here’s my 7…..

7-Ed Reed

He’s not 100 percent; but when he’s near the ball, he’s always a threat to score.

6-Jim Leonhard

How important is it to have veteran secondary depth? We found out Sunday when Landry went down. We had no idea that he would help contribute as much on Special Teams as well.

5-Jared Gaither

He is NOT replacing Jonathan Ogden. But he IS anchoring the most important part of the line. Without him, Joe Flacco may have looked like Ben Roethlisberger on Sunday.

4-Adam Terry

John Harbaugh was VERY complimentary of his Tackles in Monday’s press conference; and he should be. They have been outstanding.

3-Terrell Suggs

What a difference a pass rush makes.

2-Ray Lewis

The hit on Kellen Winslow changed the course of the game. He has again assumed a leadership role.

1-Chris McAlister

From watching last season’s Ravens to this season’s Ravens, there is NO DOUBT who is the most important player on this team. I mean, NO DOUBT. He changes everything. The interception wasn’t even the most important thing he did all day.

So here are my overall standings:

1-Chris McAlister-14 points
2-Le’Ron McClain, Ray Lewis -6 points
3-Terrell Suggs, Jason Brown-5 points
4-Yamon Figurs, Adam Terry-4 points
5-Joe Flacco, Jared Gaither-3 points

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

Drew says that if the Ravens remain healthy, they will win games this season. But it’s really not even that complicated. This team will win games just as long as the SECONDARY remains healthy. The healthy secondary has made a HUGE difference; as the Ravens already have more wins over divisional opponents this season than they did all of last year.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-A healthy Travis Ivey, Nolan Carroll, and Terrell Skinner will help the Terps’ defense; but the Adrian Moten loss will hurt. They NEED to find ways to pressure Cullen Harper next week.

-Nice to see the Orioles took in the festivities this weekend. It’s a shame no one besides Chris Waters was told they actually had to play games as well.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 19 September 2008 by Glenn Clark

Here are my weekend football picks:

Ravens 16, Browns 13

The Ravens do not yet have the vertical game necessary to open this game up; but they DO have the secondary necessary to hold the Browns down. If Joe Flacco can continue to avoid turnovers, the Ravens will be in good shape to move to 2-0 in the division.

Maryland 28, Eastern Michigan 6

Again, I don’t quite have the faith in the Terps to open this game up the way they probably SHOULD; but I don’t think they will fall all over themselves like they did in the first two weeks. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ralph ended up deactivating Da’Rel Scott before the game starts, as he will need to be 100 percent when the Terps visit Clemson.

Towson 21, Coastal Carolina 20

If this game were in Towson, I’d pick the Tigers to win by a more comfortable margin; but there will be some troubles remaining focused in Myrtle Beach. Sean Schaeffer will need to get back on track; and I imagine he will-to a certain extent. The Tigers’ defense can hopefully use a 4th quarter stand to get revitalized for the next few weeks.

Navy 38, Rutgers 30

I think what we are learning about this Rutgers team is that Greg Schiano is just NOT that good of a coach. He was a GREAT coach with Brian Leonard and Ray Rice in his backfield; he was a pretty good coach with just Ray Rice. With both gone, I really think we’re learning that Greg Schiano is not the super-coach many people thought him to be. A healthy Eric Kettani would make a MAJOR difference for the Mids; but I just expect Ken Niumatalolo to get back to a healthy dose of the Triple option, and the Knights; even with a number of fans in attendance in Naptown; will not have an answer for that.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say……
