A Lesson in Regression

A Lesson in Regression

Posted on 27 July 2012 by Thyrl Nelson

With football season just around the corner and Joe Flacco in the process of negotiating a new deal there’ll surely be plenty of opinions offered as to why the Ravens should or shouldn’t pay him, whether or not he’s capable of leading the team to the next level, and how much he’s being helped or hurt by the “under fire” guidance of Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron. It’s also an absolute certainty that a lot of those indictments and opinions will be wrong.

Football is fun for lots of reasons. Fans tend to find it more exciting than other sports and as a result they follow it more feverishly. Fans’ passion however doesn’t necessarily make their opinions any more educated. In fact, part of the real beauty of football (as I see it at least) is that fans remain in the dark about most of what’s going on; ignorant to exactly what happened on the field in comparison to what was supposed to happen, and left mostly with results and numbers to justify their opinions.

I say ignorance with all due respect…but ignorance it is nonetheless. I, for example, attend every Ravens home game and view the action from the upper deck, I DVR every game, usually watching them 3 to 5 times over during the week. I don’t claim to have a coach’s eye or an inherent understanding of which player had what responsibility on any given play. Even if I did, games on TV follow the ball and therefore often fail to show you, the viewer some of the most important elements of what’s happening on the field. Therefore despite all of the effort I put in to understand the action, I’m still quite ignorant. That part will change some as the league prepares to offer fans access to coaches (“All-22”) film if they’re willing to pay for it, but we’ll still be mostly ignorant.

Access to the “all 22” film still won’t provide fans much insight on play calls or responsibilities, but it should give us the basis at least to make better guesses about those matters.

The season isn’t even here yet, and I’m already sick of hearing about Flacco’s regression last season in terms of completion percentage with no account given to the offensive line struggles and no credit given for dumping off would be sacks and saving yards for the team. If Flacco held onto the ball longer (like Jay Cutler for example) and took more sacks we’d likely be crucifying the offensive line and their lack of protection. By bailing them out however and dumping balls out of bounds Flacco instead draws criticism and talk of regression. I’ve also heard more than enough unfavorable comparisons between Flacco and the NFL’s elite QBs despite the Ravens inability to exploit the middle of the field with the 6’5” or better power forward type receivers or tight ends that coincidentally all of the league’s elite passers seem to have.

The one that gets me going the most though is the assessment of Flacco’s yardage regression with no attention paid at all to the defenses that he played against and how they performed against the rest of the league by comparison.

Joe Flacco is focused on winning for the city rather than money

Posted on 19 July 2012 by John Sears

Yesterday news broke that there was a chance that the Ravens and Joe Flacco could come to terms on a long term contract by the time training camp rolls around; a “75% chance” to be exact.  I’m sure most fans were excited to hear this, as was I.  But when a report comes out like this, it’s important not to trust it blindly.

You see, teams will sometimes leak this information in order to sort of “put the ball in the players court”, so that if a deal doesn’t get done the player (Joe Flacco in this case) might look bad.  Well, Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta joined Drew Forrester this morning to address the chances that Joe Flacco signs before training camp.  He said rather sarcastically (in regards to the ‘75% chance’), ““That was news to me. That’s good. That’s a good number”.  Quite simply put, there is no timetable on when it will get done.

Ravens fans shouldn’t really expect a deal to get done in the near future.  In negotiations like this (where there is no timetable, unlike Ray Rice) the two parties will usually talk things over for a while.  “You want to understand what their sides hot button, important issues are. They have to understand ours. We shake hands. We hug and we go at it. It’s not personal. It’s not the vitriol filled room that a lot of people might think,” Linta said.

Linta said Flacco really isn’t even worried about when it gets done which is very good news for the Ravens and fans.  He said, “Money is secondary to him to the winning and the success he enjoys with the team.”  This should make Ravens fans happy because the last thing we need is another player who’s mind is not on football when it should be (ahem…Ed Reed).  Flacco is focused on winning games like he has done throughout his career.  “His primary focus is to go out and play the game and win for the town and himself…He has a real affinity for this town,” said Linta.

Quite frankly, Ravens fans are lucky to have a player who generally cares about the city, wants to win for everyone and who is a top flight quarterback.  Flacco takes so much undeserved criticism from people, including a large majority home town fans.  It always amazes me how fans around here can criticize the best QB we have ever had here by a long shot.  When did people become so spoiled?

Linta believes that it is due in large part to some of the mainstream media.  He says, “There are people in the media who don’t watch the film so all they have to go on is statistics. There are a lot of guys that are on television that don’t know the difference between touchdown and goose down yet they are analyzing Joe Flacco’s performance. You have to laugh at that but they become influential to the public at large.”

And that’s just it.  Flacco’s numbers obviously aren’t the best but if you actually watch him play.  If you actually see what he does with the below average supporting cast (minus Ray Rice) around him, it’s hard to argue that he is not one of the best QB’s in the league.

Flacco also has a great deal of confidence in himself.  Lack of confidence is often a downfall of some quarterbacks.  Ravens fans, however, do not have to worry about this with Joe.  Not to mention Joe’s calm attitude.  “Nothing upsets him to the point where it deters his performance. That’s an amazing quality and one you really look for in a quarterback,” Linta said.

Joe is the perfect QB for this town.  He cares about winning, he wants to stay here, he is focused on football rather than money and he is blue collar type of guy.  What more could we ask for?  Joe will lead us to the Promised Land, but he can’t do it alone.  He needs your support.  So stop criticizing his every move and just let him do his thing.

Joe Flacco being ranked 9th best QB is just right

Joe Flacco being ranked 9th best QB is just right

Posted on 03 July 2012 by John Sears

Yesterday, Joe Flacco was ranked by Ron Jaworski of ESPN as the 9th best QB in the league.  He beat out the likes of Tony Romo, Matt Ryan, and Michael Vick as he should.  As with most things surrounding Flacco (especially in Baltimore) this ranking sparked a heated debate on Twitter, Facebook, and message boards.  Some said he was too low and some were saying too high.

The number nine ranking for Joe Flacco is actually exactly where he should be.  Since his rookie season in 2008, he has noticeably improved in different aspects of his game.  After his rookie 2008 season for instance he became a better pocket passer.  After the 2009 season he improved his accuracy on certain passes he had struggled with such as sideline throws, while also throwing less interceptions.  Last year he noticeably improved his extending the play ability.  He was constantly under pressure due to lack luster offensive line play and was able to avoid that pressure countless times.  He was not able to complete many passes from this but he didn’t take as many sacks either.  Look for him to improve during these situations this year by locating open receivers down field.

Not to mention he has done all this while never missing a game since he has been in the league.  That is an incredible feat when it seems QB’s go down left and right.

But I digress.  Flacco has been able to turn a slightly below average passing offense into an above average one.  Joe doesn’t have the stats that some other QB’s have so you wouldn’t know how good he actually is unless you watched his games.  And Jaworski said he wasn’t ranking them off of their stats but on their quarterbacking ability (and quite frankly I think people can get too wrapped up in stats that really have little indication of how good someone is). His arm strength is second to none.  He can fit balls into very tight spaces at times as exhibited by his throw to Lee Evans in the AFC Championship game that was dropped.  That was one of the best throws I have seen anyone make.

As I said earlier he has also developed the ability to extend the play and break tackles with his large frame.  The one down side to his game is that he is inconsistent.  He isn’t wildly inconsistent but he is just enough to take criticism for it.  There are times where he makes some throws that you just have no idea what he is seeing but they are still pretty rare.

The most common argument for Flacco being higher on the list is that he wins a lot of games.  While this is true, all those games weren’t won because of Flacco alone.  The defense contributed a great deal if not more than Flacco did.  Along with the threat of Ray Rice that opposing defenses had to focus on as well.

The problem with Flacco is that he isn’t flashy.  He doesn’t make plays like Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees because he isn’t that type of player.  He is game manager at this point in his career.  He hasn’t “taken over” many games.  While Flacco has the ability and potential to be as good as anyone, he just isn’t there yet.  He was always going to be a project, coming out of the FCS.

I think this year could finally be the year we see Joe reach his full potential.  I sincerely hope that offensive coordinator Cam Cameron opens things up a little more for Joe and allows him to throw the ball around the field and have more control over the offense.  We could finally see what Flacco is made of if he did.

Fantasy Flavor Week 6 Start Rankings

Posted on 15 October 2010 by Thyrl Nelson

Here are the week 6 fantasy football start rankings in their entirety. I’ll be back to update them on Friday evening once the final injury report comes out.

Disclaimer: The rankings are “formulary”, based on 2-parts individual expectations and one part defensive expectations based on that player’s weekly match up, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies and my gut. The “formulary” numbers are listed behind each player’s match up in parentheses with the lower numbers being best, and a lowest possible “formulary” number of 3. As always, trust your own gut, keep an eye on the injury report, good luck and have fun. If you aren’t having fun playing fantasy football, you’re doing it wrong.
