We’ll have wide receivers and defenses up tomorrow along with updates when the official game status injury report comes out. Remember the rankings are based on a weighted “formula” that’s 2-parts player expectations and 1-part defensive tendencies for that player’s opponents. The formulary numbers are listed behind each player’s match up, with the lower numbers being best, and a lowest possible score of 3.

Remember that the rankings are based on 2 parts individual player expectations, and 1 part defensive expectations against that player and his position based on this week’s match up. It’s not an inducement to do anything crazy, just a simple guide to help manage your expectations, find week by week waiver help, and another source to add to your cache.

 

With bye weeks upon us, the need to find adequate one-week replacements becomes much more imperative, and hopefully by this point in the season we’re beginning to understand what to expect in terms of roles, injuries, workloads, skill sets, and defensive strengths and weaknesses. Keep in mind, that as the season moves along and the bodies of work begin to grow, the accuracy of the rankings should only improve week by week.

Here are the Fantasy Flavor Week 3 “Formulary” Start Rankings for Quarterbacks and Tight Ends. Remember that the “Formula” is two parts player expectations, and one part defensive expectations against that player based on opponent and position.

 

Two weeks into the season, we’re at the tricky point. Teams are beginning to show tendencies, strengths and weaknesses, that’s a positive. Additionally, players’ roles are becoming more clearly defined. Still, it’s tough to base defensive expectations on two weeks of play, yet impossible to believe that last year’s trends will all hold up. And players too, while defining their roles, are far from settled in, so balancing preseason expectations with 2 weeks of play so far is an inexact science to say the least.

 

Having said all of that, here are the rankings for QBs and TEs. We’ll follow tomorrow with running backs and kickers, and finish with wide receivers and defenses on Friday. As always, pay attention to the injury report, trust your gut, and make sure to have fun. If you’re not having fun playing fantasy football, you’re doing it wrong.

Week two is here and with it, hopefully a little more clarity as to what to expect defensively from week to week from the opponents of your fantasy players. Here are the first half of the Fantasy Flavor Week 2 Formulary Start Rankings, with wide receivers, tight ends and kickers to follow tomorrow.

 

Here’s the explanation of the “formula” and how to use the rankings. First, I rank the players at every position, at least 75 RBs, at least 100 WRs, at least 60 TEs, and every projected starter at the other positions based on their performance so far, expectations going forward, workload, health etc. Then I number them by 2′s (2,4,6,8). After that I rank the defenses, mostly using ESPN’s points against rankings, with minor adjustments for injuries, anomalies and my gut.  Those rankins are numbered 1-32. By adding the two numbers together, you come up with the “formulary” #, lowest possible is 3. It’s 2 part player expectations, 1 part defensive expectations against that player’s position, all against my best effort to gauge their projections against what could best be described as the equivalent of the baseball RP.

 

Now the disclaimer, since the body of work is small at this point, a lot of the expectations, especially defensively are based on last year’s performance, again, with adjustments made for injuries, anomalies, changes in workload and my old gut.

 

In shorter terms, it’s not gospel. It is though, and interesting guideline, fairly accurate historically, and one more resource to use when contemplating tough decisions, looking for sleepers or searching for bye week help.

 

As always, keep an eye on the injury reports and make adjustments as you see fit, and most of all have fun. If you aren’t having fun playing fantasy football, you’re doing it wrong.
