2014 Big Ten Football Schedule Announced

Schedule Features Inaugural Big Ten Home Opener against Ohio State at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 4

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Big Ten announced on Thursday its football schedule for the 2014 season, which will mark the University of Maryland’s inaugural season in the conference. Maryland’s home conference schedule will feature matchups with Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State and Rutgers. The Terrapins will travel to Indiana, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan.

“It is great to know that we have our schedule for our inaugural season in the Big Ten,” Head Football Coach Randy Edsall said. “This is a very attractive and challenging schedule and is one our coaching staff, student-athletes and fans will look forward to playing in 2014.”

The Terrapin’s first Big Ten matchup will come on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Bloomington, Ind. to play the Indiana Hoosiers. This will mark the first time these two teams have played since 1935, when Indiana defeated Maryland 13-7 at Memorial Stadium. The Hoosiers hold 2-0 advantage in the all-time series.

Maryland will face Ohio State in its first Big Ten home conference game on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

After a week off, Maryland hosts Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 18, marking the first-ever meeting between the two universities. The Terrapins return to the road the following week, traveling to Wisconsin on Saturday, Oct. 25 for their first-ever game against the 2012 Big Ten Champion Badgers.

Maryland stays on the road on Saturday, Nov. 1 for its first meeting with Penn State since 1993 and their first trip to State College since 1992. This marks the 38th meeting between the two schools.

Following a week off, Maryland returns to College Park to host Michigan State on Saturday, Nov. 15. This will be the first time the two teams have met since 1950, when Maryland won 34-7.

Maryland makes its first trip to Ann Arbor since 1990 when they play the Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 22. Michigan was victorious in the last meeting and is 3-0 all-time against Maryland.

The Terrapins close out their inaugural Big Ten schedule on Saturday, Nov. 29 when they host Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights, who will also make their Big Ten debut in 2014, last traveled to College Park in 2009.

Of the eight conference opponents Maryland will face in 2014, two finished the 2012 season ranked in the Associated PressTop 25 and four of them played in bowls, including one BCS bowl (Ohio State and Penn State were both ineligible for postseason play). Six of the schools finished with a winning record in 2012, including Wisconsin who won the Big Ten Championship.

Report: Four-star area QB commits to Maryland

Posted on 25 April 2013 by WNST Staff

InsideMDSports.com reported Thursday that four-star St. John’s (DC) quarterback Will Ulmer had committed to coach Randy Edsall and the University of Maryland.

According to the report, Ulmer had received scholarship offers from “nearly every school in the ACC along with Ohio State, Wisconsin, Nebraska” and more. Ulmer will join the Terrapins after their move to the Big Ten.

Last season, injuries forced the Terps to turn to LB Shawn Petty as their starting quarterback for the final four games of the season. In 2014, they should be stacked at the position. C.J. Brown was granted a waiver (medical hardship) to receive a sixth year of eligibility in 2014. New Mexico transfer Ricardo Young will be a senior; Perry Hills, Caleb Rowe and Dustin Dailey will all be juniors.

DL Andre Monroe is a St. John’s player currently on the roster. OL Pete White came from St. John’s as well but left the football team earlier in the year for personal reasons. Ulmer joins McDonough OL Jared Cohen as players committed to come to College Park in 2014.

Former Terp Bowen joins Towson football staff

Posted on 24 April 2013 by WNST Staff

TOWSON, Md. – A former graduate assistant coach at the University of Maryland, Tyler Bowen has been named as an assistant coach for the Towson University football team, it has been announced by Head Coach Rob Ambrose.

He will serve as the Tigers’ tight ends coach.

A native of Helena, Ga., Bowen played three years of football for the Terrapins before becoming a student assistant coach for Ralph Friedgen in 2010. In his season as a student assistant, he helped Maryland post a 9-4 record and a win in the Military Bowl.

“Tyler Bowen is an incredible experienced and talented young coach who has learned from some of the greatest minds in college football,” says Coach Ambrose.  “His versatility and enthusiasm are already being felt by our players and staff.”

An offensive tackle whose career was hampered by injuries, Bowen was an All-State offensive lineman at Telfair County High School in Georgia. He was recruited by a number of major college programs before deciding to attend Maryland.

After the 2009 season, it was determined that he couldn’t play football anymore due to injury problems. At that point, he joined the Terrapins’ coaching staff.

After he received his degree in 2010, he joined Coach Randy Edsall’s staff as a graduate assistant. During his two seasons as a G.A. at Maryland, he worked with the offensive linemen and the wide receivers. He spent most of his time working with the offense. In his final season at Maryland, he coached for Mike Locksley, the Terps’ Offensive Coordinator and a 1992 graduate of Towson.

Edsall impressed with Terps’ effort in Spring Game

Posted on 12 April 2013 by WNST Staff

Opening Statement:

“I thought it was really good tonight. I was very impressed with the effort and intensity and the hitting that took place. The kids really came out and got after it. I was impressed with the people that were out here. What a great night and the weather cooperated. I couldn’t be more pleased with what has taken place in the 15 days we had during the spring. It culminated tonight with a good effort from everyone out here.”

On the running game:

“I limited what the defense could do. It was still good to see [from] them. That is what we have seen out of Brandon [Ross] and Albert [Reid] all spring along with how they run. The one thing we have to be able to do is run the ball efficiently. When we do that it opens up the passing game. With the skill guys we have at wide receiver it will make us more productive and a chance to get big plays. They ran the way they have been running all spring.”

On Stefon Diggs:

“He is better this spring. He is more focused, not to say that he wasn’t before. He really wants to be better. He doesn’t want to stay the same, he doesn’t want to regress. He really understands the effort that has to go into being a good player. He was selected as one of the ten leaders on the team. I have created a leadership council; we aren’t going to have team captains this year. We will select game captains week by week. I had the coaches recommend a guy from their position who they felt could be a leader of their group and the team.”

“Stefon was the guy at wide receiver, Albert [Reid] at running back, C.J. [Brown] was the quarterback, Dave Stinebaugh the tight end, Sal Conaboy the offensive lineman, Darius Kilgo on the defensive line, Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil at outside linebacker, Cole Farrand is the inside backer, J.J. [Jeremiah Johnson] at the secondary, and Greg Parcher the long snapper. We let them know that. I think Stefon is making sure he can do everything he can to live up to the role he now has as part of that leadership council.”

On the quarterback play:

“With Ricardo [Young] the big thing I thought he did tonight was be inconsistent. We have to get more consistent. Dustin Dailey is a guy who got better this spring. [Shawn] Petty was a guy who they were able to but plays in with trick plays. That is something they did; it won’t be in our arsenal for the season. That was for the fans.”

On who stood out:

“There were some guys who made individual plays out there. J.J. [Jeremiah Johnson] made the pick; Zach [Dancel] made the pick. Some guys had sacks. We will have to take a look at film and evaluate the entire fifteen days. We will end up creating a depth chart out of those fifteen days and it will be something that we put together heading into the fall. We will then put in the newcomers, many of who were here today which is great to see, they have been working hard and lifting. Overall, I am pleased with what we did and got accomplished. We have some big things ahead of us for this summer.”

Ross, Reid, Diggs shine in Maryland Spring Game

Posted on 12 April 2013 by WNST Staff

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Running backs Brandon Ross, Albert Reid and wide receiver Stefon Diggs were the standouts Friday night as the Red and White teams played to a 13-13 tie before 8,200 fans at Byrd Stadium.

The game marked the end of spring practice for the Terrapins and coach Randy Edsall.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with what’s taken place for the 15 days that we had in spring, culminated tonight with a good effort from everyone that was out here,” Edsall said after the final whistle.

In 2012, the standouts on offense were two freshmen – Ross and Diggs – and that’s how it was in the 2013 spring game.

Ross (122 yards on 19 carries) and Diggs (eight catches for 159 yards and a score) accounted for the lion’s share of the White squad’s offense. The most memorable play of the night came when Diggs took a short pass to the right side, juked a defender and sprinted down the sideline for a 51-yard touchdown.

“He’s better this spring. He’s more focused,” Edsall said of Diggs. “He wants to be better. He doesn’t want to stay the same, he doesn’t want to regress. He understands the effort it takes to be a really good player.”

Reid ran for 135 yards and threw a touchdown pass for the Red team.

“That’s what we saw from Brandon and Albert all spring long in terms of how they run,” Edsall said. “The one thing we have to be able to do is run the ball effectively.”

Quarterbacks wore yellow jerseys and needed only to be touched to be downed, which explains in part why there were nine sacks.

Despite the lax rules, Edsall will wait until the Aug. 31 opener against Florida International to use starter C.J. Brown, who is still recovering from a torn ACL and saw light duty during spring practice.

Brown hurt his knee during summer practice last year. He was the first of four Maryland quarterbacks to sustain a season-ending injury, along with Perry Hills (knee), Devin Burns (foot) and Caleb Rowe (knee). That left Edsall no choice but to use converted linebacker Shawn Petty in the final four games.

Hills and Rowe, like Brown, are still working their way back into form.

Petty is currently listed on the depth chart as a second-team inside linebacker, although he was used for a few plays under center Friday night as part of a trick-play package devised by the White team. Ricardo Young took most of the snaps for the White team, completing 12 of 21 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown. Young, a junior, began his career at Virginia Tech and played for New Mexico in 2011 before transferring to Maryland.

Red team quarterback Dustin Dailey, a sophomore, went 8 for 17 for 81 yards and two interceptions. Sophomore Zach Dancel picked off a Dailey pass and took it to the Red 17-yard line with 6:37 left to set up a game-tying, 40-yard field by Brad Craddock.

On the game’s final play, Brendan Magistro of the Red team had a 22-yard field goal try blocked.

Ross gained 52 yards rushing in the first quarter and had 100 at the half. The only score before intermission was a 24-yard field goal by Craddock.

Maryland hosts Red/White Spring Game Friday night

Posted on 12 April 2013 by WNST Staff

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland football coordinators Mike Locksley and Brian Stewart are looking forward to going against one another in Friday’s Red-White game after a productive spring season.

Locksley’s offense and Stewart’s defense will be on display as the culmination of spring workouts is put to the test at 7 p.m.

The coordinators are both in their second season with the Terps, and each has enjoyed the continuity of their systems.

“There’s definitely a natural ease in that the terminology, the plays, the techniques, we’re going through all of it,” said Locksley. “This is the third time it’s been installed for some of these guys — we put it in last spring, we did it again in the fall and now we’re doing it again in the spring. There’s definitely a familiarity with it.”

For the offense, the return of key players this season has been a huge sigh of relief. After a season of quarterback injuries,C.J. Brown received his sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA Tuesday, and although he won’t play Friday, he’s the expected starter going into the fall.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who averaged 77.1 receiving yards per game last season, is expected to make a bigger contribution, and Deon Long and Nigel King are expected to join Diggs on the return team. Locksley also expects the tight ends to pick up their production after the quarterback inconsistency last season.

“Our most experienced position last year was tight end and with the quarterback situation, if anyone felt the brunt of it, it was the tight ends in terms of their production,” said Locksley.”

Although the defense will miss the production of a number of playmakers, including defensive linemen A.J. Francis and Joe Vellano, Stewart and the defensive coaches are excited to turn a new page moving forward.

“Everyone is increasing their confidence on defense,” said defensive line coach Greg Gattuso. “I used to ask a question and they’d pause long enough for Joe or A.J. to answer. I think they were overshadowed, and I think I’m seeing these guys blossom.”

Stewart is looking for more out of the defense this season, especially with the experience of the secondary.

“Last year they were in a learning process so we had to tone everything down and make sure they knew what to do,” said Stewart. “Now with it being the second year in the defense, now they’re playing fast and we’re trying to do what we’re supposed to do at a high level.”

The Red-White Spring game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. and parking and admission are free of charge. Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will air a one-hour show highlighted by extensive coverage of the spring game, including interviews and features. The show debuts Saturday, April 13, a 5 p.m., with encores Saturday at 10:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m.

Maryland QB Brown gets extra year of eligibility

Posted on 10 April 2013 by WNST Staff

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After C.J. Brown tore his ACL just prior to the start of the 2012 season, he hoped he would have a chance to make up the lost time.

Brown and the Maryland football team got a speedy answer after the NCAA approved his medical hardship waiver just two weeks after submitting the paperwork. Brown now has two remaining seasons of eligibility.

“It’s exciting,” said Brown. “I didn’t think I’d be hearing back this early since we just finished the paperwork. It’s a good sign.”

Brown has competed in individual and 7-on-7 drills this spring in a limited capacity. He expects to be 100 percent when practice begins in August, but for now, head coach Randy Edsall is more than happy with his progress.

“I think he’s made tremendous progress from the first day he came out and did 7-on-7,” said Edsall. “He was very tentative and he wasn’t driving off that back leg. You could see today, it was like night and day from the first day he did 7-on-7 to now. He’s got that confidence back and you can see that he’s been studying and working and he does things that you want out of a quarterback.”

Brown, known for being a running quarterback, has used the spring to work on the passing game. In practice yesterday, he completed 10 of 15 passes in 7-on-7 drills.

“Getting out here and taking the physical reps — I’ve been taking mental reps for so long, it feels good to get back out here and get my mind acclimated with my body,” said Brown. “That’s the biggest change. I’m mentally there; I’m seeing everything I need to see. I just need to get my body to go with my mind.”

Edsall intends on starting Brown going into the preseason and relies on him for leadership. Ricardo Young and Dustin Dailey have been taking snaps through the spring, but neither has played in a collegiate game before.

“C.J.’s been through it,” Edsall said. “He’s been around. Experience is your best teacher, and you can’t sacrifice experience. Being in the huddle, the maturity, everything else … when you have a guy who’s been around like C.J. and has the mind-set like he does, it’s comforting as a coach. You just watch the way the kid’s worked since it’s happened. You talk about someone who wants it real bad. He’s worked his tail off to get himself back.

The Terps only have Friday’s spring game left, and Brown hopes it’ll be the last time he has to sit out.

“I’ll be hanging out on the sideline, being a cheerleader,” he said. “One last time.”

Edsall pleased to get “good news” about Brown eligibility

Posted on 09 April 2013 by WNST Staff

Head Coach Randy Edsall

Opening statement:

“I’ve been pleased with what’s taken place out here for the 13 practices. I think we’re getting accomplished what we need to get accomplished. Are we where we want to be or need to be right now? No. Have we made strides from where we were when we started? Yeah, I think we’ve made big strides. Now what our guys have to do when we get done on Friday and start the offseason program, they’ve got to do strength and conditioning and also really get focused in on learning everything. They need to go watch all the practices and cut-ups and get better for when we come in on August 4 so that when we start practice on the 5th, we’re better than we finish here on Friday night.”

On linebacker Yannick Cudjoe-Virgil:

“He’s made an impression upon the coaches since he got here. He made an impression last year on the scout team and it’s carried over here to the spring practice. He’s a guy that’s going to figure in plans for us on defense in certain packages. He’s also made Marcus Whitfield a better player because Marcus knows he has to come out here and perform and work hard every day because he’s got a guy who’s out here breathing really heavily on the back of his neck. I’ve been very impressed with [Yannick]. The other thing with him, he brings a work ethic to the team that is infectious. It helps the other guys to know that. They see him out here and what he’s doing. It’s very easy to understand why because of the work that he’s put in and the time he spends watching film to make himself better.”

On defensive backs Sean Davis and A.J. Hendy:

“That’s been really good competition. Both of them have had their moments this spring. That’s not something that’s going to be decided until fall camp, for sure. The good thing is both of them have skills and abilities to be able to help us. Now it’s just a matter, as we continue to go. They’ve both made improvements but we’ll see how they compete, how they do over the summer and what they’ll do when they get back here in August. It probably won’t be definitive until we get to games.”

On placekicker Brad Craddock:

“It’s like today: he started off OK and then when he gets himself to where he kicks a little too fast and overkicks it, then he’s got problems. When you tell him. ‘Brad, relax. Nice and easy.’ And then he relaxes. That’s just something we’re going to have to continue to work on, continue to drill in his head to keep his line and kick it nice and easy. If he does that, he’s very good. It’s when he strays from that that he has his issues.”

On quarterback C.J. Brown’s eligibility:

“It’s really good news, and I feel good for him. I’m glad we got that taken care of now, and that’s something we don’t have to worry about. When I pulled him out of the meeting and told him, he was thrilled and excited about it.”

On Brown’s progress through spring:

“I think he’s made tremendous progress from the first day he came out and did 7-on-7. He was very tentative and he wasn’t driving off that back leg. You could see today, it was like night and day from the first day he did 7-on-7 to now. He’s got that confidence back and you can see that he’s been studying and working and he does things that you want out of a quarterback. I see improvement now, and what needs to happen is he just needs to get better. He’ll be able to do more as he improves.”

Terps practice in front of 1,700 at Middletown

Posted on 06 April 2013 by WNST Staff

Head Coach Randy Edsall

Opening statement:

“It was a great day. Great weather. Coming out here you get the scenery and can see the mountains and hills. There was good work today. I’d like to thank the about 1,700 people that came out here today. It was a good turnout. We were happy to get out here, and I thought the guys competed hard. Offensively we kind of shot ourselves in the foot with penalties today. We had some dropped passes that didn’t allow us to be as consistent. I thought the defense got after it really well other than when we got to the break where they let two run down and score and then got the long run by Joe [Riddle]. Overall I was very pleased by what I saw. Guys are getting better and we’ll continue to finish it up next week.”
On running back Joe Riddle:

“I know Joe was excited to get out here and he ran hard. There were a lot of good things, and it was good to see. Joe is getting better and he’s just got to keep improving. It was good to see that, and the more we continue to develop depth, the better we’re going to be.”

On differences between this week’s and last week’s scrimmages:

“I thought we played more consistently. We ended up being a little more aggressive today. I think what happened is, one of the things the defense felt last week like they didn’t perform to the standards that they have and they wanted to change that. I think those guys are really starting to settle in. We’re still working on offense. When you don’t have C.J. [Brown] in there, it really hurts. We don’t have the leadership; we don’t have a guy at that position who’s played there. That’s one of the big differences between the offense and defense right now. There’s a little bit more leadership on the defense with guys doing what they’re supposed to be doing, and guys going after guys. On offense, we’re lacking that. We need someone to step up so when things don’t go as well as they should, there’s someone there to get after them and get them going. That’s one of the biggest differences between offense and defense right now.”

On tight end Daniel Adams:

“Daniel’s got ability, but the biggest thing with him, he’s got to be more consistent. This is the thing we’ve seen from spring practice: he’s been too inconsistent. He’s got to be more physical as a blocker, and playing the position he’s going to play up the middle, he’s going to get hit. He’s in a position where guys are going to hit him if he gets the ball and he’s got to have complete concentration the entire time. The one down here, if he catches it, it’s a touchdown, and he dropped another one. That hurts you with the momentum of your offense to get any kind of consistency and rhythm when you have guys that are dropping passes.”

On the punt and kickoff returners:

“Those are the three that we’re really working with, so we have some depth. Right now it’s 1. Stefon [Diggs], 2. Will [Likely], 3. Deon [Long] there. With those three guys, we really have a chance to do things with the return game. What we have to do is get everyone who’s blocking to understand that if they do a really good job, those guys have a chance to really change field position and score. I really like what those guys bring to the table.”

On quarterback Ricardo Young:

“With Ricardo, it’s the inconsistency. He needs to get a feel for certain things that happen out there. He’s getting better, but it’s one of those things where he’s not consistent enough for us yet. You can tell he hasn’t had the game reps yet. I did see him being a little bit more vocal today, which I liked. He just needs to be aware of some things, and you get that with playing.”

On playing scrimmages at high schools:

“We’re definitely going to do it next year. We’ll sit down after spring and figure out where we’ll go next year, but this has been a huge success for us. We appreciate Dunbar and Middletown for hosting us. Getting out here and being around people. It’s good for us because we’re a young team. Now they’re out of their comfort zone before we even get to play a game. It’s a similar experience to playing a road game and it’s important for our young kids. It’s been great and we’ll definitely do it next year.”
