UMBC visits defending America East champs Vermont Saturday

Posted on 11 January 2013 by WNST Staff

No America East team has given the UMBC Retrievers more headaches than the Vermont Catamounts. The Retrievers have dropped nine straight to Vermont and trail the all-time series, 18-4. But UMBC (1-2, 3-13) is coming in off of a 68-57 win over New Hampshire on Jan. 9, while Vermont (2-1, 9-6) is looking to rebound from a 63-53 setback at Boston U. on Jan. 8. The opening tap is slated for 3:00 p.m.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: Ryan Cook led all scorers with 21 points and a retooled lineup propelled the Retrievers to a 68-57 victory over New Hampshire in an America East Conference match-up at the RAC Arena. SR F Adrian Satchell (5/5 fg, 11 pts.) and JR G Quentin Jones (4a) got starting nods and sparked the effort. Cook scored 20 or more points for the sixth time this season and leads UMBC with 16.5 ppg.

CATAMOUNT UPDATE:  Defending America East champion Vermont opened the league season at 2-0 before suffering a 63-53 setback at Boston University on Jan. 8. JR G Sandro Carissimo led UVM with 17 points, but the Catamounts only shot 27.3 percent (15-of-55) from the floor at Case Gym.  SR F Luke Apfeld leads a balanced Vermont offense with 10.3 ppg and Carissimo is nearly in double figures at 9.8 ppg.

WHO’S UP NEXT:  UMBC returns home to face the first-place Hartford Hawks on Wed., Jan. 16.  Tip-off time at the RAC Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.

TIGERS CONTINUE ROAD SWING AT VERMONT WEDNESDAY

Towson Men’s Basketball Plays Eighth Straight Game Away From Home Against Vermont, a 2012 NCAA Tournament Team

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Towson University men’s basketball team will play its eighth straight game away from home on Wednesday evening as the Tigers travel to 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Vermont.

The game, set to tip at 7 p.m., can be heard live on the Towson Sports Network with Spiro Morekas and Damon Lewis calling the action.

The Tigers (3-4) have dropped consecutive games for the first time this season after falling at UMBC, 66-62, on Saturday.

Junior forward Jerrelle Benimon posted his third double-double in five games against the Retrievers with 13 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds.

Benimon ranks second in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in rebounds per game (9.9) and he’s Top 30 in the nation in both rebounding and double-doubles.

Vermont (4-2) saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Catamounts fell, 76-66, at Rhode Island. Junior guard Sandro Carissimo leads the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game.

Vermont is the defending America East Champions as the Catamounts advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Once there, they defeated Lamar in the first round before falling to the University of North Carolina in the second round.

Towson fell at home to Vermont last season, 65-49. The Catamounts lead the all-time series 9-8.
