INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Stevenson men’s lacrosse team will be making its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship as the fourth-ranked Mustangs will host Christopher Newport at Mustang Stadium in the first round on
Wednesday, May 8. Game time is at 7:00 p.m.

Stevenson (17-2) finished the regular season with at least 15 wins for the fifth-straight year and is 8-4 in the NCAA tournament. The team has advanced to the national semifinals in three of its four previous appearances and is 1-0 in first round contests.

Meanwhile, Christopher Newport (8-8) is making the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse
Championship. The Captains, who will be joining the Capital Athletic Conference next year, have only been in existence since 2007.

Wednesday will mark the first-ever meeting between the Mustangs and Captains.

The winner between Stevenson and Christopher Newport will advance to the second round on Saturday, May 11 to face the winner between Washington (Md.) and Colorado College.

The quarterfinals will be on Wednesday, May 15 with the semifinals on Sunday, May 19. The Division III national championship game will be played on Sunday, May 26 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Seven of Stevenson’s 2013 opponents were selected to the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship, including Western New England, Nazareth, Tufts, RIT, Salisbury, Lynchburg and Roanoke. The Mustangs went 5-2 against those teams with their only losses to Tufts and Roanoke, both by just one goal.

SALISBURY, Md. – Stevenson men’s lacrosse sophomore Pat Candon (Long Beach, N.Y./Holy Trinity) scored his second goal of the game with just 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter off an assist from junior Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) to lift the No. 3 Mustangs to a 10-8 victory over No. 6 Salisbury Wednesday night at Sea Gull Stadium.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Stevenson (10-1) who improved to 4-5 all-time at Sea Gull Stadium. It was also the sixth
time in 15 career meetings that the game was decided by two goals or less, including the fourth out of the last seven.

Candon, who had just one assist in three previous games in the series, finished with three points on two goals and one assist. He also picked up his third career game-winning goal.

The Mustangs trailed 3-2 with 6:06 remaining in the first quarter following Stephen Norris’ third goal of the game.

However, Candon tied the game just 41 seconds later before sophomores Billy Burgoyne (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) and Michael Crowe (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) each netted second quarter tallies to give Stevenson a 5-3 halftime lead.

The goals were the beginning of a 6-0 run for the Mustangs who added three third-quarter goals, including two from senior Tyler Reid
(Clinton, Conn./Xavier) and a second from Burgoyne as Stevenson led 8-3 with 10:30 left in the third.

Salisbury (10-3) answered with a 5-0 run of its own, capped by Eric Kluge’s third goal of the game to tie it at 8-8 with 5:56 to play as
the Sea Gulls held Stevenson scoreless for a span of 19:34.

Reid added an insurance goal with just seven seconds remaining, his third score of the game. He now has six goals in six career meetings against Salisbury with five of those coming at Sea Gull Stadium.

Meanwhile, Dashiell finished with two assists and the Salisbury native now has three goals and five assists in six all-time meetings against the Sea Gulls. He also picked up the win in his first-ever game against his brother Brady who is a freshman attacker for Salisbury.

In goal, freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) won his first career start against the Sea Gulls, making 12 saves,
including six in each half. He is the third Mustang to win his first-ever start against Salisbury, joining Geoff Hebert in 2009 and
Ian Bolland in 2011.

Kluge totaled three goals and one assist to lead the Sea Gulls who were 0-for-6 with the man-advantage. Norris also finished with three
goals while Wade Korvin had three points with two goals and one assist. Alex Taylor totaled 15 saves in goal.

Stevenson continues its three-game homestand with a Commonwealth Conference contest at Alvernia on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team capped off the program’s seventh undefeated season and 10th National Championship on Sunday by defeating the State University of New York at Cortland in the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championship game, 14-10, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The team finished the season with a 23-0 record and ends the year riding a 30-game winning streak. Twenty-three wins matches the program record for most in a season and the national title is the 16th team title in Salisbury University history.

“We’ve had some pretty special teams at Salisbury,” Head Coach Jim Berkman said. “I can honestly say that this team is right there with some of those other teams. When we talk about the best teams, this is definitely right there in the same breath.”

Senior attackman Sam Bradman became the first Division III men’s lacrosse player to win the Most Outstanding Player award in a National Championship game in back-to-back years. Bradman led the Sea Gulls with seven points on six goals and one assist in the game.

“I’ve loved big competition, big games ever since high school,” Bradman said. “Getting into the big games, my intensity goes up, and I just like to give it my all.”

Bradman and senior attackmen Matt Cannone and Lantz Carter led Salisbury to victory, completing the championship repeat. Cannone led the team with three assists and netted two goals for five points. Carter chipped in with four points on three goals and one assist.

Bradman put Salisbury on the board first with an unassisted goal just 29 seconds into the game. Two Cortland goals gave the Red Dragons the lead before Carter netted his first score to tie the game, 2-2.

Bradman scored his second with 16 seconds left in the first and the Gulls went into the second quarter tied with Cortland, 3-3.

Goals by Bradman and Cannone to start the second quarter gave Salisbury a 5-3 lead. After Cortland scored two to tie the game, senior midfielder Jeff McGuire and Carter netted scores to regain the two-goal lead. Carter’s goal came with two seconds left, and Salisbury took the 7-5 lead into halftime.

The Sea Gull offense came to life in the second quarter to outshoot the Red Dragons 14-7. In the first half, Salisbury outshot Cortland 19-16, won 8-of-13 faceoffs and was successful on 6-of-7 clears.

Salisbury started the second half slowly, as the Red Dragons netted two quick scores in the first five minutes of the third quarter. However, two more goals from Bradman and a man-up score from senior attackman Erik Krum gave the Gulls a 10-9 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Salisbury held the lead despite being outscored 4-3 in the third period.

The Sea Gulls rebounded in the fourth quarter to outscore Cortland 4-1, and solidify the win. Bradman, Cannone, Carter and junior midfielder Ryan Clarke all scored in the quarter.

“We had a great senior class, 18 kids who contributed a great deal over a four-year period,” Berkman said. “I’m very fortunate to be able to coach those 18 seniors.”

Throughout its time at Salisbury University, the senior class has amassed a record of 81-7, made it to four NCAA tournaments, advanced to three National Championship games and won two National Championships.

SALISBURY, Md. – No. 1-ranked Salisbury scored four third-quarter goals while Alex Taylor totaled 19 saves as the Sea Gulls advanced to their 14th national championship game with a 7-2 victory over fifth-ranked Stevenson Sunday in the semifinals of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Mustangs (18-5) finish the season one win shy of the school record for wins in a season set in 2010 while making their third semifinal appearances in four NCAA tournament berths from 2009-12.

Sunday marked the 14th all-time meeting between the two schools and the third in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first quarter despite Salisbury holding a 12-3 advantage in shots. Senior Ian
Bolland (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) made four first-quarter saves.

The game remained scoreless until the Sea Gulls’ Lantz Carter scored unassisted with 3:46 remaining in the second quarter. The goal was the first allowed by either team in the series in a span of 36:20 since Salisbury’s Sam Bradman scored with 10:06 left in the fourth quarter of the CAC championship game on April 28.

That would be the only goal of the half despite the two teams combining for 35 shots. Bolland had seven first-half saves while Taylor finished with nine.

Cory Nowak scored the first of his two goals with 8:09 to play in the third quarter which sparked a three-goal run by the Sea Gulls who led 4-0 with 5:40 remaining in the quarter when Nowak netted his second off an assist from Bradman.

Nowak and Bradman accounted for all three goals in a span of 2:29 as Bradman scored the first of his two goals at 6:59.

Freshman Michael Crowe (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) got Stevenson on the board with 4:34 left in the third quarter before Bradman answered less than a minute later give Salisbury a 5-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Taylor stopped seven of 12 Mustang shots in the third quarter.

After being outshot by nine in the opening quarter, Stevenson held a 38-23 advantage over the final three quarters, but could muster just
two goals  as Taylor totaled 17 of his 19 saves.

The Mustangs also held a 39-31 edge in ground balls while the two teams were statistically even in face-offs won, turnovers and clears.

In addition to Taylor, the biggest difference came on the extra-man where Stevenson was 0-for-6.

Junior Peter Green (Hereford, Md./Hereford) had five ground balls and two caused turnovers while junior Parker Bratton (Baltimore,
Md./McDonogh) had two caused turnovers.

Bradman totaled two goals and one assist to lead the Sea Gulls while Nowak and Matt Cannone each had two points.

The loss concludes the careers of 10 seniors on the Mustang roster. Over the last four years, the senior class was responsible for a
record 72 wins, posting a 72-12 record for an .857 winning percentage. The team also made four NCAA Tournament appearances during that time and advanced to three national semifinals.

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday after a 12-4 victory over Goucher College.

With the win, the Sea Gulls, who came into the game having never lost to the Gophers, increased their all-time record to 23-0 over the program.

“I think it was a solid performance,” Salisbury Head Coach Jim Berkman said. “The defense shut them down, holding the team to one goal at halftime.” The Sea Gull defense dominated the game allowing only four goals total, causing 17 turnovers and picking up 39 ground balls to Goucher’s 23.

Salisbury jumped out to an early lead with three goals in the first quarter. Senior attackman Tony Mendes netted the game’s first goal at the 9:25 mark of the period. Senior midfielder Cory Nowak added the team’s second score before sophomore attackman Rhett DePol flicked an off-balance, behind-the-back shot past the Gopher’s goalkeeper with 27 seconds left in the period to give Salisbury the 3-0 lead going into the second quarter.

Senior attackmen Erik Krum and Lantz Carter and junior midfielder Ryan Clarke all got their names into the scoring column with goals in the second quarter. Goucher’s Kyle Boncaro netted his team’s first goal to start the period before Krum and Carter ripped off two scores within one minute of one another. After Clarke’s tally, the Gulls took a 6-1 lead into the half.

Salisbury dominated play in the first half winning 6-of-8 faceoffs, outshooting the Gopher’s 18-9 and converting on 5-of-7 clears. For the game, the Sea Gulls dominated at the X winning 14-of-18 faceoffs.

The Gophers entered the contest as one of the better man-up teams in the nation, converting 40 percent of their tries (11th in the country). The Salisbury defense denied all four first-half man-up chances, and Goucher was 0-for-6 on the night.

“We had a pretty good read on them,” Berkman said. “We had four or five game films of them and I had seen them play in person. They had three or four plays set that they really looked for and some guys that they definitely looked for and we took those things away.”

The first goal of the third quarter did not come until the 6:54 mark as Clarke netted his second goal to end a Salisbury scoring drought that started with 9:45 left in the second quarter and lasted 17:51.

Senior attackman Matt Cannone, who led the Gulls with three goals, added his first in the third quarter to give Salisbury an 8-2 leading going into the fourth. Cannone and Mendes both had four points to lead the team in the game.

Salisbury added four more goals in the fourth quarter to cap off the game. Cannone netted two while Mendes and senior midfielder Sam Bradman added one each. Salisbury had eight different players find the back of the net in the game.

“It was good to see a couple other guys score,” Berkman said. “Lantz Carter had a big goal and the first midfield got one or two each. Guys stepped up when they got their opportunities.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up his first NCAA tournament win, playing over 58 minutes in the cage while making 10 saves.

Salisbury moves on to host Cabrini College on Wednesday at Sea Gull Stadium for a NCAA quarterfinal game; the game time is to be announced.

Meanwhile, Birmingham-Southern (14-4) is making the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse
Championship after capturing its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title. The Panthers, who are located in Birmingham,
Alabama, defeated Colorado College 8-5 in the SCAC championship game on April 29.

Wednesday will mark the first-ever meeting between the Mustangs and Panthers.

The winner between Stevenson and Birmingham-Southern will advance to the second round on Saturday, May 12 to face the winner between Gettysburg and Ohio Wesleyan.

The quarterfinals will be on Wednesday, May 16 with the semifinals on Sunday, May 20. The Division III national championship game will be played on Sunday, May 27 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Ohio Wesleyan is one of seven opponents from Stevenson’s 2012 schedule that were selected to the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Four of those opponents, SUNY Cortland, Tufts, Salisbury and Lynchburg, all received first round byes as the top two seeds in the North and South regions. The other two teams are Western New England and Denison.

The Mustangs posted a 4-3 record against those seven opponents with wins against Tufts, Western New England, Denison and Ohio Wesleyan.

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team is the Capital Athletic Conference champion for the 17th time after defeating No. 4 Stevenson University 12-9 on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.

The contest was the final CAC tournament meeting between the two programs as Stevenson is moving to the Middle Atlantic Conference after this season. The Sea Gulls have won 17-of-18 conference titles since joining the CAC.

Salisbury got on the scoreboard first as senior attackman Matt Cannone netted a pass from senior attackman Erik Krum. Cannone led the team with seven points and six assists in the game. The Mustangs took the lead back with two goals, including one from their leading scorer midfielder Justin Lea who scored three in the game.

The Sea Gulls regained the advantage with a six-goal run that lasted from 7:57 left in the first quarter until 5:31 in the second quarter. Senior midfielder Cory Nowak, the team leader with four goals in the game, tallied three of his scores during the run.

After taking a 7-2 lead in the second quarter, the Sea Gull offense sputtered and Stevenson ripped off four-straight goals to cut the Gulls’ lead to 7-6 at halftime.

At the half, Salisbury was outshot by the Mustangs 18-15 but had the advantage on faceoffs and clears by winning 9-of-15 at the X and was successful on 7-of-9 clears.

Senior midfielder Sam Bradman netted all three of his goals in the second half to keep the Sea Gulls on top of the Mustangs for the remainder of the game.

Krum started the third quarter with his third goal of the game, and with that goal, he moved past former Sea Gull Matt Hickman as the No. 10 all-time career goal scorer with 143.

Salisbury took a 10-8 lead into the final quarter, and two goals from Bradman capped off the win for the Gulls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor picked up the victory playing the entire game in the cage and making seven saves.

Salisbury will next be in action in the NCAA tournament. The field for the tournament will be announced next week.

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team had a lot to celebrate on Saturday as it defeated No. 17 Washington (Md.) College 17-5 at Sea Gull Stadium to capture the Charles B. Clark Cup during the Sea Gulls’ second annual Lax for Leukemia game on Senior Day.

The Sea Gulls’ silent auction and t-shirt sales for Lax for Leukemia raised $11,000 that will go toward the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the National Marrow Donor Program.

Eighteen Salisbury seniors played in their final regular-season home game in the win and were recognized before the game.

With the victory, Salisbury has now won 12-straight contests against the Shoremen to improve its all-time record to 26-19 in 45 official meetings with the Eastern Shore rival.

Midfielder Sam Bradman and attackman Matt Cannone, both seniors, combined for 17 points to lead the Sea Gulls to an undefeated regular-season record of 17-0. Bradman led the team with seven goals and added an assist to finish with eight points. Cannone netted two scores and led the team with a career-high seven assists for nine points.

The Gulls started the game on a 5-0 run after junior midfielder Ryan Clarke sparked the offense with the game’s first goal just 47 seconds into the contest. Cannone netted two of the scores while Bradman and senior attackman Erik Krum each added one.

The Shoremen cut the lead to three with goals at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter. Both defenses stiffened up in the second period, holding each team to only one goal. Krum added the Gulls’ tally with 2:45 left in the period, and Salisbury took a 6-2 lead into the half.

Salisbury outshot Washington College 23-17 and won 5-of-8 faceoffs in the first half but was only able to score on 1-of-7 extra-man opportunities.

In the third quarter, Bradman caught fire with two goals within one minute of each other to ignite the Sea Gull attack. He added four more tallies in the fourth period to put the game out of reach. The Canton, N.Y. native netted six of the Gulls’ first nine goals of the second half.

The Sea Gulls took a 9-4 lead into the fourth quarter before exploding for an eight-goal quarter. Along with Bradman’s four, senior attackman Kyle Quist had two scores in the period, and Krum and Clarke both added one.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Taylor played 55:44 in the cage and made seven saves on route to a perfect regular-season record (17-0).

Salisbury will next be in action in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Gulls will have a first-round bye and will host a CAC semifinal game on Wednesday against an opponent that is to be determined.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Salisbury’s Matt Cannone scored his fourth goal of the game with just 11 seconds remaining to cap an 8-1 as the No. 1-ranked Sea Gulls rallied from a six-goal deficit over the final 15:45 to post an 11-10 victory over fourth-ranked Stevenson Saturday night at Mustang Stadium.

The loss snapped an 18-game conference winning streak for the Mustangs (12-3, 6-1 CAC) and was their first in nine games at Mustang Stadium.

Stevenson led 9-3 with 52 seconds remaining in the third quarter following the second goal of the game from freshman Stephen Banick
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) off an assist from sophomore defender Warren Pumphrey (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s).

However, Salisbury (15-0, 7-0 CAC) scored the next three goals in a span of just 1:01, including two from Tony Mendes, to pull within
three at 9-6.

Menendes, Matt Cannone and Ryan Clarke combined to score the last eight goals for the Sea Gulls with three each coming from Cannone and Mendes.

Salisbury outscored the Mustangs 6-1 in the fourth quarter while winning 6-of-7 face-offs and holding a 13-2 edge in shots. For the game, the Sea Gulls won 14-of-21 face-offs and outshot Stevenson 39-28, including 24-11 in the second half.

The game featured 18 penalities including for a total of 16:30, but neither team could capitalize as they went a combined 3-17 on extra-man opportunities.  The two teams also combined for three man-down goals.

Banick totaled two goals and three assists for a game-high five points while senior Nick Rossi (Lutherville, Md./Towson) finished with a career-high three goals. Sophomore Chris Dashiell (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) had two goals.

Cannone also had a game-high five points with four goals and one assist while Mendes also netted four goals. Clarke had two goals and
two assists.

Senior Ian Bolland (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) finished with a season-high 13 saves, including nine in the first half. His
counterpart Alex Taylor finished with nine saves.

Stevenson reutrns to action on Wednesday, April 18 as the Mustangs host a CAC contest versus Frostburg State on Senior Day. Face-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Seniors lead Maryland to its first Final Four berth since 2006 in overtime victory over No. 1 seed Syracuse

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Senior Grant Catalino scored with a low-to-high rocket from the right wing with 0:32 left in the first overtime to give the University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team a 6-5 victory over No. 1 seed Syracuse in front of 14,122 Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium.

The victory gives the Terps a 12-4 overall record this season and sends them to their first Final Four since 2006.

The overtime period started with sophomore Curtis Holmes winning his 11th face-off of the game on a big groundball by senior Dan Burns. But the Terps couldn’t get the game-winner on that possession and the Orange had a chance for the win with just under 2:00 to go in OT.

Syracuse’s Kevin Drew scooped up a loose ball and carried it into the Maryland zone. Drew dodged down the right alley on the transition chance, but his shot sailed right of the goal and the Orange failed to back-up the shot, giving possession pack to the Terps.

Maryland cleared the ball easily and set-up a play that started with senior Scott LaRue dodging from the far left wing. The Orange defense stepped up and forced LaRue to move the ball to senior Ryan Young behind the Syracuse goal. Young quickly followed the play and moved the ball to Catalino, who popped out on the right wing and he buried the game-winner from nine yards out.

As exciting as the game ended, it was slow going for both offenses in the first half.

A Maryland turnover caused by Syracuse’s Joel White led to the only goal of the first quarter as Jeremy Thompson scored at the 3:03 mark of the first to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.

With 4:45 left in the second Jovan Miller scored unassisted to make it a 2-0 lead for Syracuse, but the Terps broke through a stingy Orange defense at the 3:58 mark to cut the deficit back to one.

Senior Ryan Young ripped a pass from the high right alley to the left side of the crease where junior Drew Snider was waiting and Snider bounced a shot past SU goalie John Galloway for the goal.

That seemed to awaken the Maryland offense as the Terps tied the game at 2-2 less than two minutes later. Senior Scott LaRue dodged hard from the left wing and got under SU short-stick Tim Harder. LaRue went hard to the crease and put a shot inside the far pipe for his second goal of the season.

Maryland continued its scoring run into the third quarter when the man-up unit came through with a goal after the holding call on Syracuse’s Stephen Kehoe expired. Junior Jake Bernhardt caught his defender ball-watching and cut to the crease where senior Travis Reed found him with a pin-point pass. Bernhardt then one-timed a dunk to give the Terps their first lead of the game, 3-2, at the 9:37 mark.

The man-up unit struck again after a double-penalty on the Orange expired. This time it was Reed scoring the goal, placing a low-to-low shot inside the far pipe from the right wing, making it a 4-2 Maryland lead with 7:42 to go in the third.

Syracuse got back to within a goal on JoJo Marasco’s unassisted goal at the 1:46 mark and SU looked to be in line to take the last shot of the quarter but a procedure violation gave the Terps the ball with 10 seconds remaining.

Young had the ball in the far left corner of the restraining box as the clock ticked down. His desperation heave to the crease paid off when LaRue redirected the ball past Galloway to give Maryland a 5-3 lead going into the fourth.

An illegal body check on senior Brett Schmidt gave the Orange an extra-man opportunity early in the fourth and Thompson converted with his second goal of the game to make it a 5-4 Maryland lead with 10:53 to go.

A save by Galloway with just over 2:00 to go in the fourth gave Syracuse the ball with a chance to tie. After an Orange timeout, Miller dodged the right alley and scored on a high shot with 1:05 left to make it a 5-5 game.

The Orange had the momentum and then got the ball on the ensuing face-off when White picked up the loose ball. The Orange used their final timeout of the second half to set-up a play with 0:55 left.

Syracuse went to Miller again, but this time senior Brian Farrell was able to get his stick on Miller, disrupting the shot, which enabled redshirt freshman Niko Amato to make the biggest of his nine saves of the game.

The Terps advance to the Final Four in Baltimore and will play No. 5 Duke, which defeated No. 4 Notre Dame, 7-5, in the second quarterfinal game at Gillette Stadium. The Terps/Blue Devils match-up will be the second game of the Saturday doubleheader that features No. 6 Denver meeting No. 7 Virginia in the first game at 4 p.m.

Baltimore Bound With 16-7 Victory Over Roanoke; Gulls Will Play Tufts For Second-Straight Year

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-ranked Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team is heading back to Baltimore for its second-straight and 13th overall NCAA Division III national championship game after capturing a 16-7 victory over No. 7 Roanoke College on Sunday at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury (20-1) will play Tufts University, which defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 16-12 in the North Region semifinal, next Sunday at 7 p.m. at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The maroon and gold will be competing for the program’s ninth national championship. The Jumbos and Sea Gulls met in the 2010 national championship game, with Tufts claiming a 9-6 victory to earn its first national championship in program history. After 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Sea Gulls tallied the game’s first goal as junior attackman Matt Cannone took a feed from sophomore midfielder Ryan Clarke and finished it into the net for the 1-0 lead with 4:57 left in the first quarter. The Sea Gulls won the ensuing face-off, with sophomore midfielder Corey Nowak picking up the ground ball; the Ballston Lake, N.Y., native burst past his defender and ripped a shot on frame and into the net to hand Salisbury two goals in a span of 10 seconds. After gaining possession nearly a minute later, Roanoke (17-4) called a time-out with 2:06 remaining in the quarter. During the time-out, officials flagged a member of the Maroons (17-4) for an illegal stick, handing SU a three-minute man-up advantage. The Sea Gulls closed out the quarter with man-up goals from junior attackmen Kyle Quist and Tony Mendes.

Salisbury’s man-up advantage continued to start off the second quarter, and the Sea Gulls took full advantage with junior attackman Erik Krum tallying an unassisted goal with 14:37 to play in the half. Over the next several minutes, the maroon and gold would tack on three additional goals, including another man-up goal from Krum, to extend the lead 8-0 in favor of the hosts. Roanoke got on the board with 10:14 remaining in the second quarter, as Jeff Keating recorded an unassisted goal. The Sea Gulls would outscore the Maroons 3-1 to close out the first half.

At the halftime break, Salisbury outshot Roanoke 23-10, picked up 21 groundballs compared to 11 for the Maroons and won 8-of-13 face-offs.

The Sea Gulls kicked off the third quarter with goals from Krum and Mendes before Roanoke ended the quarter with four-straight markers to cut the deficit to 13-6.

Krum added an unassisted goal just 23 seconds into the quarter to hand Salisbury a 14-6 lead and record his fourth and final goal of the contest. The Sea Gulls would take advantage of slashing penalty on the Maroons, their fifth of the contest, with Cannone scoring off of a pass from Quist. Roanoke’s Conner DuBois scored the team’s final goal of the game with 9:01 remaining before SU sophomore midfielder Sam Bradman closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with 7:01 remaining.

Cannone led the way in the contest for Salisbury with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists. Krum (four goals) and Mendes (three goals, one assist) finished with four points, while Quist (two goals, one assist) followed shortly behind with three points.

SU senior goalkeeper Johnny Rodriguez notched 13 saves, one caused turnover and three groundballs to earn the win before being relieved by senior goalkeeper Tim Swinburn to a standing ovation from the Salisbury faithful.

Two Salisbury players deserving of special recognition are senior defender Collin Tokosch and Nowak. The two combined for 18 of the team’s 45 groundballs in the victory.

Keating posted a team-high two goals for the Maroons, while Justin Tuma collected one goal and one assist.

Roanoke goalkeeper Charles Pease finished with seven saves in nearly 54 minutes of action, with Mike Hardon recording six minutes of playing time and staving off one Salisbury shot.
