13-Johnny Unitas Passes Away (2002)

While there are a number of all-time great Baltimore Colts still with us, clearly Johnny was the greatest. The time this city took to honor him (including a genuine tribute from Ravens QB Chris Redman) was well-deserved.

12-Terps win 2004 ACC Tournament

John Gilchrist could have run for governor in March 2004. Of course, he couldn’t have borrowed a dollar by March 2005.

11-Mike Mussina Signs with Yankees (2000)

moose

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the moment that marked the real start of the current Orioles era of darkness. The team had struggled and made poor decisions BEFORE this, but they had at least tried to spend some money and get better players. After this day, it happened very little.

10-Barbaro Collapses After Start of ’06 Preakness

I guess this would be the “most gasping” moment of the decade, for sure. Barbaro entered the 2006 Preakness viewed more favorably as a Triple Crown contender than even Smarty Jones or Big Brown. Barbaro captivated this country after the Kentucky Derby, and even more after his collapse at Pimlico. For those of us who were there that day (and sober enough to watch the race), that image won’t leave our minds any time soon.

9-Rafael Palmeiro Busted for Steroids (2005)

raffi

Has there been a more maddening year than 2005 during this decade plus of losing than 2005? After trading for Sammy Sosa, the Birds actually found themselves……..winning!

That of course came to a crashing halt around the time of the All-Star Game; and the biggest highlight of the season (Rafael Palmeiro’s 3,000th hit) was soon completely tarnished by what I might call the biggest “we should have seen this coming” moment of the decade.

There were other steroid era moments that could have qualified, including that fateful day in front of Capitol Hill, but this was the most embarassing of all of them.

8-Maryland Women win 2005-2006 NCAA Hoops Title

Maybe this would be the “Hey, that’s pretty cool!” moment of the decade. It didn’t have the significance of a men’s title; but it was still a pretty awesome moment for Maryland fans everywhere. There were probably a number of Maryland fans who couldn’t have named the coach of the team before that night, but those same fans were probably guilty of saying something like “if only Gary Williams could recruit like Brenda Frese” after that night.

Also, Kristi Toliver’s shot ranks up there with Juan Dixon’s 3 against UConn and his baseline jumper against Indiana in the pantheon of great shots in Terrapins history.

7-Michael Phelps Breaks Mark Spitz’s 7 Gold Medal Record (2008)

The moment was made by the scene at M&T Bank Stadium. It would have been an incredible moment in Beijing no matter what, but it was an even more incredible moment for Baltimore given the fact that fans around town could stick around after the Ravens’ preseason game to watch it happen. I think I would call this the “most significant record-breaking moment” of the decade in local sports.

6-Hasim Rahman stuns Lennox Lewis for Heavyweight Title (2001)

I would classify this as the biggest “Did you hear?” moment of the decade. Most sports fans in town didn’t just have no idea Hasim Rahman was FIGHTING for Lennox Lewis’ belts, they didn’t know who Hasim Rahman WAS. But Hasim put together one of the great knockouts in the history of heavyweight title fights; in what most American fight fans consider the last significant heavyweight title change the sport has seen. Lennox Lewis was not an “Alphabet Soup” champion who dodged the best contenders the way heavyweight champions of the last 5 or 6 years have been-he was the legitimate “Heavyweight Champion of the World.”

And thanks to one punch, a young man from Baltimore became the legitimate “Heavyweight Champion of the World” as well, at least for a short time.

5-Ravens Fall to Colts in ’07 Divisional Round

I think this would be classified as “Biggest Emotional Letdown” of the decade. This city ABSOLUTELY identified this as the chance to exercise the demons of the Mayflower vans, and to finally move past Bob Irsay’s move from Baltimore to Indianapolis. On top of that, the 2006-07 Ravens appeared to give the city its best chance to win another Super Bowl this decade.

Obviously, none of that happened.

4-Ray Lewis Charged with murder in Atlanta (2000)

ray

I think I would describe it as the most “jaw-dropping” local sports moment of the decade. Did anything come of it? No, not really. However, this was still the best athlete in town facing charges of murder. And to this day, Ray can’t enter another NFL stadium without hearing about this moment.

3-Cal Ripken Jr. Plays Final Game with Orioles (2001)

rip

This may be too high on the list. We all knew it was coming, but it didn’t take away from the moment itself. I think the reason why I have this so high on the list anyway is because I’ve heard this phrase so many times over the last decade: “at least in the past I could go to the games and see Cal….I don’t have any reason to go anymore.”

We all hope Matt Wieters, Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz, Adam Jones and company will bring about change-but the last GREAT memory any of us have at Camden Yards is absolutely this moment.

2-Maryland Claims 2001-2002 NCAA Hoops Title

Look, it would have been Number 1 on my own personal list, and it wouldn’t have been close. But there is NO WAY it can drop below the #2 spot on anyone’s list-or you were just plain not paying attention for the better part of the decade. It was the culmination of the greatest season in Maryland history, and the crowning moment for Juan Dixon-the most significant college athlete the state of Maryland has ever seen.

1-Ravens win Super Bowl XXXV (2001)

Do I really need to explain this?

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 03 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

What happened during Dave Trembley’s press conference last night on MASN really is unacceptable, and DT had every right to act accordingly. Some member of the Orioles’ Public Relations staff should have gone to the hallway in an attempt to quiet the people standing there.

It’s a frustrating season for Dave. Would the Orioles be better with a different manager? Probably not MUCH better….they’re just a bad baseball team. But I understand Dave’s frustration.

How Baltimore Buzzed: Week Ending 7/31

Posted on 01 August 2009 by Glenn Clark

My apologies that this didn’t get posted until a day later. The voting (I’m the only voter) ends at 2pm on Friday. It should be posted shortly thereafter. This is only Week 2; and I’m already screwing up. Anyone surprised by that?

This list is compiled by the Academy of Baltimore Sports Arts and Sciences. I am the only member. I scan news sites, blogs, radio phone calls, Facebook, Twitter, and sit out in your bushes to hear what you’re talking about.

(Editor’s Note: I only sit out in your bushes if you’re an attractive female. Which probably means none of you have to be concerned. However, if an attractive female IS reading, please contact me with your name, phone number, and home address. We need to document these things.)

15-New coach, still no respect

Towson football was picked to finish last in their division this week at CAA Media Day. When reached for comment, students at Towson University said “we have a football team?”

14-Are there any other Wide Receivers available that no one has heard of?

(Edit from GMC: Derrick Mason is coming back. This seems stupid now. I get it. I get it.)

The Ravens added Jayson Foster, Biren Ealy, and Thomas White to their receiving corps this week. Meanwhile, my man Fred-Ex was pictured on Deadspin Friday proving he still has good hands…..

freddie

Look, he converted a 4th & 26. Have you done that? If you want to keep downplaying him, do right ahead. But I say sign him. There’s NO CHANCE he’s not as good as Jayson Foster.

13-Best facilities? The football stadium doesn’t even have seats!

The Princeton Review named the University of Maryland as having the best athletic facilities in the country. While Byrd Stadium may look nicer after this expansion, it still seems like a bit of a stretch. Also, despite the amount of time Terrapin athletes spend there; Cornerstone and RJ Bentley’s were reportedly not considered during this report.

12-What, no one wanted Aubrey Huff?

Despite the Orioles likely being willing to deal just about anyone, the George Sherrill deal was the only one that appeared to be happening before Friday’s deadline.

(Edit from GMC: I was a day late posting. You know what happened. Make fun of me all you want.)

When asked why more teams weren’t interested in trading for Orioles players, the most common answer Andy MacPhail received was “The players you want to give away aren’t any good.”

11-Favre’s retired. Probably. Possibly anyway.

Remember when this guy was the most compelling player in the league who didn’t play for your favorite team?

Yeah, I don’t either.

10-Rasslers come to the arena…..and don’t like it

WWE announcer Joey Styles via Twitter: “OMG, The Baltimore Arena is a dump…” WWE star Chris Jericho via Twitter: “I completely agree. Time to pony up for a new arena city council…..”

I was going to write a punchline here, but I’m pretty sure just a picture of that crap-hole will do….

arena

9-Ralph’s trimmed pounds, but will his wins be trimmed too?

The good news? At ACC Media Days this week, Terps coach Ralph Friedgen announced he has dropped 95 pounds since he began dieting last fall. The bad news? His Terps were picked to finish 5th in their own division by the ACC media.

When asked about dropping the pounds, Coach said “Anyone seen Bachman? Come on people, where’s Tubby?”

8-Is it Arrieta’s turn?

With Brad Bergesen headed to the DL, the Orioles will need a starter for Tuesday. And no Forrester, Derek Lowe is not available.

Andy MacPhail said in interviews Friday he expected the Orioles to call up someone to make the start. While it seems likely that Andy Mitchell will be headed up from Norfolk, Jake Arrieta makes a lot of sense considering he was probably going to be major-league bound at some point this season; and Jason Berken may not be long for the rotation himself.

For what it’s worth, my vote is Jim Palmer to make the start. Hell, we’re not trying to win anyway.

7-Why don’t they just swim naked????

Rival Milorad Cavic called out Michael Phelps for choosing to stick with his slower Speedo swimsuit instead of upgrading to a high-tech Jaked or Arena swimsuit before their rematch in the 100 meter fly. In fact, the entire Swimming World Championships in Rome have basically been nothing more than everyone bitching about swimsuits.

Of course, I’ve done my fair share of bitching about swimsuits, myself. Mostly about how SI forced Beyonce to wear one when they put her in their magazine…..

beyonce

(Edit from GMC: Before this was posted, Phelps beat Cavic anyway. Up yours, Serbia or wherever Cavic is from!)

6-Soccer is stupid. Let’s get a team!

Despite the fact that the majority of people you know will tell you they think soccer is stupid; 71,000 people were at last Friday’s Chelsea-AC Milan match downtown.

Now, many fans in Baltimore are clamoring for more soccer (and likely have no idea there is actually a pro outdoor team of sorts already in the city); and think the city should consider a soccer-only stadium for a potential MLS team.

And in fairness, they’re right. It’s about time this city had a pro sports team worth watching during the summer months.

5-So…..do we want him or not?

A day after Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome shot down any interest in Michael Vick; Coach John Harbaugh wouldn’t do the same. Of course, Harbaugh’s words quickly turned into “The Ravens want Michael Vick”, which isn’t particularly true.

It’s sorta like when my girlfriend (“The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet” of course)Chrs asked me if I would go see the new Harry Potter movie. I said said “I don’t think that’s going to happen.” You see, I didn’t say no; but only because there’s a chance this person may ask if I want to see it with her…..

kardash

4-The Cavalry is Here!

Chris Tillman gave up 3 home runs and got a no decision in his Major League debut against the Royals. He did look pretty good for much of the game, though.

Of course, doesn’t it say more that this city can get excited about a pitcher who gave up 3 home runs against the Royals?

3-Big Money for the Big Man

Ozzie Newsome says he spent his summer reading “Blind Side: Evolution of a Game”, Michael Lewis’ book about Michael Oher.

Michael Oher likely spent his summer reading “How to Install a Hot Tub in Every Room in Your House.”

I know I would.

2-Farewell Flat Breezy

The Orioles shipped closer George Sherrill to the Dodgers in exchange for a AA 3rd baseman (Joshua Bell) and Dave Johnson’s kid (Steve Johnson).

Despite reports that Bell couldn’t handle 3rd base defensively, MacPhail was defiant in interviews, saying that the Orioles expect him to stay at 3rd for a long time.

MacPhail said he also expected this man to be the organization’s future at first……

1-Ravens Training Camp Opens

OH MY GOD I HAVE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT SAM KOCH IS DOING RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!

Is there anything funnier than how every radio station, TV station, newspaper, blog site, etc in town just falls all over themselves for the chance to be the first to report that….say…..Eron Riley had a slight limp in 7 on 7 drills?

That being said, make sure you sign up for the WNST text service and follow WNST on Twitter. That way you’ll be guaranteed to be the first to know exactly how Eron Riley looks in shorts.

Look, if you want to call be a corporate whore, go ahead. It isn’t the worst thing I’ve been called today.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 31 July 2009 by Glenn Clark

I’ll make a weekend pick for you.

The Birds will lose 2 of 3 to the Red Sox.

Thoughts on the Sherrill deal?

I’m not moved that much either way. Sherrill was pretty good, so it will be unfortunate to lose him. But if these kids can play, no one will be angry about the deal.

Reed wearing the red “no contact” jersey in practice?

Probably a precautionary measure.

Do the White Sox covet George Sherrill?

Posted on 29 July 2009 by Nestor Aparicio

We’re getting down to the nitty gritty on the MLB trading deadline. The Cliff Lee deal today and a few other minor deals will have folks buzzing over the next 36 hours.

Ken Rosenthal floated some information today that was interesting in regard to George Sherrill at Fox Sports.

From Rosenthal:

“As many as eight teams are pursuing Orioles closer George Sherrill, and two or three are “actively engaged” with Baltimore in discussions, according to a major-league source.

The Orioles expect that the number of teams serious about Sherrill actually might grow once the big-name starting pitchers get traded — or not.

The Dodgers have maintained interest in Sherrill, and a number of their prospects appeal to the Orioles. The Angels are “mildly” involved, according to one major-league source.

The Phillies are unlikely to act on Sherrill now that they are preparing to trade four prospects for Indians left-hander Cliff Lee.”

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 July 2009 by Glenn Clark

Gotta get out to Westminster today; so I can’t add too much right now.says Harbaugh thought first practice ‘crisp’

Robert Ferguson told me yesterday (and reiterated to Drew this morning) that he wants to play for the Ravens. I can tell you that Reggie Williams definitely wants to play for the Ravens as well.

Are guys like that the answer? No. But could the Ravens use a guy like Ferguson, Williams, Darrell Jackson, etc.

Some sort of veteran presence would be nice.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Looking forward to seeing Chris Tillman tonight. Don’t give him much of a chance against Zack Greinke; but looking forward to it.

-If a certain swimsuit helps you swim faster, why wouldn’t everyone just wear it? Does it inject steroids into your body? I understand Phelps’ loyalty to his sponsor; but why not just make a faster suit?

Talk to you tomorrow.

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 July 2009 by Glenn Clark

It’s been a while; so here are some “Weekend Picks”…..

AC Milan 2, Chelsea 1

There is of course no reason for me to pick an exhibition match; but I’m an Italian soccer fan, so I’m going with the Rossoneri.

Red Sox take 2 of 3 from the O’s

Jeremy Guthrie or Brad Bergesen will figure out a way to get a win somehow this weekend. Combined, they’re one pretty good pitcher.

Drew Bennett IS the receiver the Ravens sign

I don’t think they really have any interest in Joe Horn to be honest.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Washington Times’ Tim Lemke says European events like tonight’s World Football Challenge ‘raise bar’ for MLS in United States

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-Don’t like the NFL’s decision to move the Draft to a Thursday night; but fully understand it. The NFL has every right to try to create a ratings juggernaut and bring home mega advertising dollars; but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best thing for football fans. Much like the way Ravens fans gather on Sundays for what I can only describe as fellowship amongst fans; Draft weekends have created the same type of fellowship amongst fans. The NFL had that. They won’t anymore.

-Tonight’s match is particularly important for the city as the US tries to bring in a future World Cup. Having the best tickets of any of the stops on this World Football Challenge tour sets up well for getting future World Cup qualifiers or even a World Cup match. Baltimore may NOT be the best soccer market in the county, but being centrally located amongst east coast cities certainly gives us the advantage when it comes to being an ideal location for soccer fans to travel to.

-I don’t question Drew’s sources at all; and firmly believe that he is accurate. That being said; I will still be STUNNED if Andy MacPhail gives up on Rich Hill before Jason Berken.

Talk to you this weekend.
