Spinelli Accepts Coaching Position at Boston College

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men’s basketball head coach Mark Turgeon has announced Scott Spinelli has accepted an assistant coaching position with the Boston College men’s basketball team.

“Scott and I have known each other for a long time and have worked together for the last eight years,” Turgeon said. “He is an outstanding coach and recruiter and has been a great member of my staff while at Wichita State, Texas A&M and Maryland. This is a great personal and professional opportunity for Scott and it’s a chance for his family to move back to the New England region. Scott’s been a great friend and I wish him, his wife Lynn, and his family the very best.”

“I want to thank Mark for the great opportunity,” Spinelli said. “I enjoyed working with him over the past eight years and I am proud of our accomplishments. I had a tremendous experience at Maryland and sincerely enjoyed working closely with the basketball staff, student-athletes and the athletics department. This was a very unique opportunity that was presented to my family and I, and we are eager to return home. On behalf of my entire family, I would like to thank the University of Maryland community and wish them the very best.”

Spinelli worked as an assistant under Turgeon at Wichita State (2006-07), Texas A&M (2007-11) and Maryland (2011-14).

Reports: Maryland assistant Spinelli departs for Boston College

Posted on 13 April 2014 by WNST Staff

A week of rumors have apparently come to fruition this weekend, as CBS Sports reports that University of Maryland basketball assistant coach Scott Spinelli has accepted an offer to join new coach Jim Christian’s staff at Boston College.

The move was expected throughout the week.

Spinelli has been part of Turgeon’s staff in all three years since his arrival in College Park-the Massachusetts native had previously worked under Turgeon at Texas A&M and Wichita State.

The Washington Post reported Spinelli received a “pretty solid raise” to join the Eagles’ staff. Additionally, Spinelli and Christian are both former Boston University basketball players and the former Maryland assistant has heavily recruited the New England area, including bringing Wrentham native Jake Layman to College Park.

This is the second assistant coach Turgeon has lost in the past year, Dalonte Hill resigned from the school following a third DUI arrest last fall. Only Bino Ranson remains from the original staff Maryland’s top man put together-Ranson was a holdover from Gary Williams’ last staff.

Dustin Clark was promoted from Director of Basketball Operations to an assistant coach after Hill’s resignation. Maryland great Juan Dixon was added to the staff as an assistant to Turgeon as well.
