The UMBC men’s lacrosse team will try to move to 2-0 in America East play when they travel to Burlington, Vt. to take on the Vermont Catamounts. UMBC (3-5, 1-0) opened league play with a 16-12 victory over defending league champion Hartford last Saturday, while Vermont (1-8, 0-1) fell at Stony Brook, 13-5. The opening face-off is set for 1:00 p.m. from Virtue Field.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS

UMBC was unable to win back-to-back games for the first time in 2012 when they let an 11-8 fourth quarter lead slip away, and fell at No. 19 Towson, 12-11 on April 3.

Junior attackman Joe Lustgarten smashed career highs with five goals and eight total points, in the win over Hartford and was named America East Conference Player of the Week for his effort vs. the Hawks. He followed up with a career-best four assists at Towson and now has a team-high 15 helpers on the season.

UMBC was listed as “Receiving Votes” in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll as of April 2, 2012.

The 16 goals scored by UMBC is a season high and the most since opening the 2011 campaign with 16 goals at Presbyterian. The 28 goals scored by the two squads are the most in a UMBC contest since a 15-13 loss at North Carolina in the 2009 NCAA Tournament contest.

Junior attackman Scott Jones scored four goals vs. Hartford and Towson and leads the Retrievers with 22 goals and 26 points. He has scored in 14 consecutive games and has multiple points in 13 of those contests.

Entering the week, junior goalkeeper Adam Cohen led America East and was sixth in the nation with 12.29 saves per game.

UMBC is 15-6 in America East road contests in eight previous league seasons. The Retrievers have not opened at 2-0 in league play since 2009.

SCOUTING THE CATAMOUNTS

Vermont dropped its only game of the week at Stony Brook 13-5 in the America East opener for both teams.  Junior Drew Philie paced the Catamounts with a hat trick, while senior Geoff Worley added a goal and an assist. Worley is Vermont’s leader with 25 points (11g, 14a).

Vermont went 2-for-3 with a man advantage vs. the Seawolves and are 15-of-41 (36.1 percent) on the season. Phillie has scored seven man-up goals in 2012.

For Philie it marked the 12th time in his career that he has scored three or more goals in a game, which rank as the 10th most in the nation among non-seniors.  He, who leads Vermont with 17 goals in 2012, has also scored a point in 29 straight games which is the 13th longest active streak in the country.

The Catamounts have only scored 13 goals in the first quarter in nine games to date. They have also struggled on face-offs, winning only 36.1 percent.

THE SERIES

UMBC has won all eight previous meetings with Vermont, but the last two meetings have been decided by a single goal. The Retrievers triumphed, 9-8, at UMBC Stadium last season and  8-7 in overtime in Burlington in 2010. Jones scored three goals, added two assists and recorded the game-winning goal with 41 seconds remaining as the host Retrievers nipped Vermont in 2011.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

Riding a four-game winning streak and coming off the largest fourth quarter comeback in the 53-year history of the program, the Towson men’s lacrosse team has broken into the national rankings this week. The Tigers (6-3, 2-0 CAA) find themselves ranked No. 19 in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. It’s the first time Towson has been ranked since checking in at No. 20 in the May 3, 2010 poll.

Freshman Justin Mabus scored the game-winning goal off a pass from senior Matt Lamon with 38 seconds left in the second overtime period as Towson pulled off a stunning 10-9 Colonial Athletic Association comeback victory over No. 20 Hofstra University (4-5, 1-2) at Shuart Stadium on Saturday night. The Tigers’ victory capped off a frantic rally in which they erased a 9-3 deficit in the final 11:27 of the game.

The Tigers and Retrievers both have losses to Loyola and Johns Hopkins. TU posted a 10-9 win at Stony Brook, UMBC’s foe on April 14.

Towson is ranked third in the nation in man-up offense, hitting at 54.2 percent (13-of-24) and third in shooting percentage at 36.7 percent.

Senior attackman Sean Maguire leads the Tigers with 16 goals and is tied with sophomore midfielder Thomas DeNapoli with 21 points.

THE SERIES

Towson is UMBC’s most-played foe with 42 previous series meetings. Maryland is second with 35 contests. The Tigers lead the overall series, 27-15, but UMBC has won four of the last five and eight of 15 contests since 1997.

UMBC never trailed in last season’s 10-9 victory over the Tigers at UMBC Stadium. Rob Grimm had three goals and two assists and Ryan Johnston added a pair of goals.

Rob Grimm had five goals and five helpers in the 2009 and 2011 games vs. Towson at UMBC Stadium, but did not score vs. TU in the 2010 loss at Unitas Stadium. Adam Cohen, then in his freshman season,  made 12 saves in that game, a 10-7 Tiger victory. Scott Jones scored a goal in that game as a freshman and added a pair of assists in the UMBC victory in 2011.

Opening Face-Off
The Tigers have won back-to-back games and are above the .500 mark for the first time since a season-opening win at Jacksonville. With its 17-8 victory over Mercer on Wednesday, Towson notched the program’s 400th career win. Saturday the Tigers open up Colonial Athletic Association play against long-time rival Delaware. Updating the Tigers 
With consecutive victories over Stony Brook and Mercer, the Towson men’s lacrosse team has posted back-to-back wins for the first time since April 2010. The Tigers boast a winning record at 4-3 at the exact midpoint of the season. It marks the first time Towson has had a winning record after seven games since the 2007 season in which the Tigers started 5-2. Towson ended that year with a 9-7 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Four different Tigers have double-digit points on the year, led by senior Sean Maguire’s 17 points on 13 goals and four assists. After his second three-assist game of the year on Wednesday, freshman Justin Mabus continues to pace the squad with nine helpers to go along with one goal. Junior Matt Hughes (16) and sophomore Thomas DeNapoli (11) join Maguire and Mabus with double-digit points for the Tigers.

Scouting the Blue Hens
Delaware, which was nationally-ranked during the first few weeks of the season, enters tonight with a 3-5 overall record and an 0-1 mark in CAA games. Despite their record, the Blue Hens have picked up a pair of wins over ranked teams this season. UD topped then-No. 12 Bucknell on on February 11 and defeated then-No. 8 Villanova on March 3. Delaware is led by Grant Kaleikau’s 33 points on 13 goals and 20 assists. Danny Keane is the only other Blue Hen to have double-digit points with 12 goals and three assists.

Towson-Delaware Series History 
The Tigers and Blue Hens will be meeting for the 53rd time on the lacrosse field tonight. Towson has only played Loyola (54) more often in its history. The Tigers own a 35-17 advantage in the all-time series history, including victories in each of the last two meetings. In the last 12 matchups between the rivals, Towson is 9-3.

Career Efforts
A number of Tigers put forth career-best efforts in the win over Mercer on Wednesday. Perhaps most notably, junior Matt Lamon tallied a career-high four goals on just six shots. Sean Maguire (3), Matt Hughes (3) and Andrew Hodgson (2) all matched their career-highs in goals. Maguire recorded a hat trick for the second time this season, Hughes netted his sixth career three-goal game and Hodgson got on the scoreboard twice in a game for the fourth time in his career.

Scoring in Bunches
Towson tallied a season-high 17 goals against Mercer on Wednesday and nine different Tigers scored. The 17 goals are the most scored by the Tigers since an 18-12 victory over Penn on April 26, 2008. Towson’s nine-goal first half and eight-goal second half are also the two top scoring halves by the squad this season.

Opening Face-Off
After picking up a big road win at Stony Brook on Saturday, the Towson men’s lacrosse team returns home to take on Mercer on Wednesday. The Tigers will be seeking the 400th win in program history. Fans can catch the game live on WNST-AM 1570 with Spiro Morekas and Hunter Lochte calling the action.

Updating the Tigers
Towson sits with a .500 record for the third time this season and will look to get over the hump against the Bears on Wednesday. The Tigers are coming off a critical road win this past Saturday in which they led 10-6 in the fourth quarter and held on a for a 10-9 victory against Stony Brook. Senior Carl Iacona posted his second straight multi-goal game against the Seawolves Saturday and now had five goals on the year. Senior attackman Sean Maguire, who is riding a nine-game point streak, still leads the team with 13 points on 10 goals and three assists. Junior’s Ian Mills and Andrew Wascavage have stepped up their play recently. Mills won 17 of 23 face-off’s Saturday and scooped a career-high 12 groundballs in the Tiger win. Wascavage tied a career-high with 11 saves in 45 minutes against Stony Brook and the goalkeeper leads Towson with 47 saves on the year.

Scouting the Bears
Mercer, now in its second season of men’s lacrosse, dropped its first eight games of the season, but picked up the program’s first Division I victory with a 14-11 win over Wagner on March 16. The Tigers and Bears share one common opponent thus far with Towson topping Jacksonville, 12-10, while Mercer fell, 16-5, to the Dolphins. Zack Ward leads the Bears in scoring with 22 points on 14 goals and eight assists. Cole Branch ranks second on the squad with 13 points on seven goals and six assists. Three different goalkeepers have seen action for Mercer with Justin Bateman posting a team-high 54 saves and an 11.93 goals-against-average.

Towson-Mercer Series History
Wednesday will be the first all-time meeting between Towson and Mercer. The Bears are competing in men’s lacrosse for just their second season in 2012.

Going For 400
The Towson men’s lacrosse program will be going for its 400th victory on Wednesday. The Tigers’ victory over Stony Brook on Saturday put Towson at 399-300 all-time.

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Carl Iacona tallied his second consecutive multi-goal game, leading the Tigers past the Stony Brook Seawolves 10-9 Saturday afternoon.

A late flurry of shots nearly tied the game for Stony Brook, but junior goalkeeper Andrew Wascavage made an amazing save on Nick Watson’s shot with one second remaining to preserve the Towson victory. The Seawolves attempted three shots in the final eight seconds of play while playing with a man advantage.

“It was chaos,” Towson Head Coach Shawn Nadelen said. “I’m glad that the clock ran out and the ball did not cross the goal line.”

Iacona, a New York native who went to Massapequa High School, now has nine multi-goal games in his career.

Iacona and Andrew Hodgson both had two first half goals for the Towson (3-3, 0-0 CAA), which used three straight goals over the final seven minutes of the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the half.

With the score tied 4-4, Towson attackman Dan Kramer took a pass from Matt Hughes fired a shot past Stony Brook goalkeeper Sean Brady that put gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter.

Towson kept the pressure on the Seawolves for remainder of the second period. Hodgson’s second goal of the contest came just 67 seconds after Kramer’s tally to give Towson a 6-4 edge. Senior Michael Brashears added Towson’s fourth goal of the second quarter with 1:04 remaining in the frame, putting the Tigers in front 7-4.

However, Stony Brook’s defense tightened up in the second half and the Seawolves mounted a late three-goal charge of their own in the fourth quarter.

With Towson holding a comfortable 10-6 lead, Stony Brook scored three goals in 1:08 during the fourth quarter to come within a one goal margin. Mike Rooney’s goal with 3:59 remaining in the game capped the run, bringing the score to its final, 10-9.

Hughes also scored two goals in the Towson victory.

Towson senior Ian Mills was 17-for-23 in faceoffs for the Tigers, and gave Towson a needed spark in that area according to Nadelen.

“I’m glad Ian stepped up,” Nadelen said. “He really controlled the faceoffs. We have to dig in and continue to get those to go our way.”

Senior Carl Iacona is coming off his first multi-goal game of the season and classmate Matt Lamon has four points in his last two outings.

Scouting the Seawolves
Stony Brook enters Saturday with a 1-4 record, but the Seawolves lone win came against nationally-ranked Delaware. After dropping its first three games to open up the 2012 season, Stony Brook topped the Blue Hens on the road, 7-6, on March 10. In their last outing on Tuesday, the Seawolves fell, 11-9, at home to St. John’s. Senior Russ Bonanno leads the team with 13 points on eight goals and five assists. Junior goalkeeper Sean Brady has played all but 30 minutes in the cage for the Seawolves and boasts a 10.44 goals-against-average with 39 saves.

Last Year’s Towson-Stony Brook Meeting
Towson attackman Matt Hughes scored a game-high three goals, including the eventual game-winner with 9:50 left in the fourth quarter, as the Tigers earned a 9-8 non-conference victory over fifth-ranked Stony Brook University at Johnny Unitas® Stadium. Led by Hughes, who posted his third “hat trick” in the last four games, the Tigers defeated a top five opponent for the first time since April 27, 1996 when they defeated fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins by a 13-12 margin at Homewood Field.

Towson-Stony Brook Series History
The Tigers and Seawolves will be meeting for just the third time in the series history on Saturday. In 2010, Stony Brook picked up a 14-11 home win and Towson responded last year with a narrow 9-8 victory on its home turf.

• Fresh off its 12-7 victory over Patriot League foe Lafayette this past Saturday, the Navy men’s lacrosse team will step away from conference action to face Towson on Tuesday evening … meeting for just the 11th time in series history, the Mids and Tigers will face off at 7:30 pm at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
• The Mids are coming off their most complete game of the season which featured a balanced offensive attack … eight different players scored goals for the Midshipmen, including Tucker Hull, who pitched his fourth hat trick of the season, and rookie middie Gabe Voumard and sophomore long pole Pat Kiernan, who scored two goals apiece … the Mids dismantled a Lafayette defense that came into the game as the nation’s third-ranked scoring defense, giving up fewer than seven goals.
• Towson is coming off a 10-8 win over Mount St. Mary’s, but needed a three-goal fourth quarter to capture the win … the Mount held an 8-7 lead with nine minutes to go in the game, but the Tigers scored three in a row, including the game-winner by Matt Hughes with four minutes remaining.

• Eleven different players have scored goals for the Tigers this season, including senior attackman Sean Maguire who has produced 10 points on a team-high eight goals and two assists … meanwhile second-year midfielder Thomas DeNapoli stands second in scoring with nine points on seven goals and two assists … DeNapoli is coming off a strong performance against Mount St. Mary’s, netting a hat trick.
• Sharing time in goal are senior Travis Love and junior Andrew Wascavage … Wascavage has played in all four games, giving up 34 goals (11.33 GAA) and making 33 stops (49.3) … Love has played in two games, surrendering nine goals (9.00) and posting 12 saves (57.1).
• Junior Matt Thomas has handled the majority of the faceoff duties (26-57, 45.6), while juniors Warren Kalkstein (6-19, 31.6) and Ian Mills (7-11, 63.6) have also pitched in.
• Towson, meanwhile, is ranked No. 2 nationally in shot percentage (37.4) and is seventh in extra-man offense (57.1) … the Tigers struggle mightily on man-down, however, as they are ranked 60th (41.7).

Series History
• Tuesday’s contest between Navy and Towson marks only the 11th game in a series that, prior to 2010, was discontinued following the 1997 campaign.
• Navy holds a narrow 6-4 advantage, losing four of the five  games played at Towson … conversely, the Mids are 5-0 in games played in Annapolis.
• The inaugural meeting was won by Navy, 13-9, but a regular series was not set up until the 1991 campaign … Navy and Towson met seven straight years before the series stalled out.
• Navy head coach Rick Sowell owns a 1-2 record against Towson … he was 1-1 against the Tigers at Stony Brook and lost the only meeting with Towson while at Dartmouth.

2011 Navy-Towson Recap
• Navy scored the game’s final six goals while the defense held Towson scoreless over the last 18 minutes of play to earn a 14-11 victory over the Tigers at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.
• Both teams utilized extended runs throughout the game, as momentum shifted from one sideline to the other.  Towson opened up a 3-0 lead with under five minutes to go in the opening frame, before the Mids heated up and poked in a pair of goals, including a beautiful lefty shot from freshman Sam Jones on the right wing with under 40 seconds to play.
• The Mids knotted the game at 3-3 when junior attackman Taylor Reynolds used his speed to wrap around the left side of the cage and fire off a rocket to the right post.  Not only did the shot come hard an fast out of Reynolds’ stick, he had almost no angle as was witnessed by keeper Travis Love who never budged.
• The two teams would trade goals over the next two minutes before Towson would once again mount a run that featured sophomore attackman Matt Hughes scoring the first of his game-high three goals.
• Trailing 7-4 with five minutes remaining in the opening half, the Mids, much like the Bucknell game, rallied and scored three goals in the final three minutes including two in the final minute.  Sophomore middie Jay Mann stuck his five-yard shot in at the three-minute mark, followed by a well-executed extra-man goal by Jones on the crease with 51.8 seconds left.  Navy evened the score at seven-all when senior midfielder Andy Warner found rookie attackman Tucker Hull open just behind the plane of the goal and Hull turned his shoulder and sent his ankle-biter in with just 1.7 seconds before intermission.  Warner was credited with assists on all three goals just before the half.
• Scoring its fourth-consecutive goal, Navy struck first in the second half as Warner sent his pass across the field to junior midfielder Nikk Davis who then found Hull for the goal at 13:46.
• Navy’s lead, however, would be short-lived, as an extra-man goal by senior attackman Tommy Beach at the 9:36 mark triggered a four-goal run by the Tigers.  Hughes would score two of the four goals, including the last in the run that had Navy’s coaching staff bewildered.  Junior midfielder Carl Iacona was clearly offside, so obvious, in fact, that Iacona dropped the ball because he thought the official had whistled him for the infraction.  Once the madness subdued, Iacona wisely snatched the ball up and took off for the goal.  Chased down around the crease, he made a diving pass to Hughes, who curled around the left side of the net and sent his shot past Navy junior keeper RJ Wickham.
• With 3:04 remaining in the third quarter, Towson held an 1-8 advantage.  Remarkably, it would be the Tigers’ final goal of the game.
• Meanwhile, after being held scoreless for better than 12 minutes, Navy finally got on the scoreboard when freshman Harrison Chaires’ shot on extra-man bounced off the keeper’s stick and over his head for the goal.
• While Chaires’ goal certainly pushed the momentum in the Mids’ favor, Navy went on to score three goals in three minutes to start the final quarter, including a goal by Warner with 10:06 to play that put the lead back in Navy’s hands.  Meanwhile the goal just 32 seconds prior to Warner’s was a high-to-low beauty that hugged the left post by senior midfielder Kevin Doyle  who notched his first goal of the season.
• Navy extended its lead with an unassisted goal by Mann with 3:55 remaining and Warner put the game out of reach when he broke free from a double-team that included the goalkeeper, and punched in his second goal of the evening on an open goal.
• Warner led all players with a career-high eight points on two goals and six assists.  He is the first Navy player to register eight points in a game since Jon Birsner dealt out eight assists against Colgate on March 19, 2005.  Meanwhile, the six assists by Warner are the most by a Navy player since Birsner produced six helpers against Holy Cross on March 26, 2006.
• While Navy’s offense continued to shine, so, too did faceoff specialist Logan West, who finished the contest just one win shy of tying the school’s all-time single-game record.  West won 19 of the 29 draws and picked up eight ground balls along the way.

Towson Ties
• Mark Goers, the Director of Physical Education Operations who has been with the Navy lacrosse program since 2002, is a 1995 graduate of Towson … he is the Tigers’ all-time leader in faceoff win percentage (70.2) and ranks fourth with 375 faceoff wins.
• First-year Towson assistant coach Anthony Gilardi served as an assistant coach at Navy from 2009-11 under Richie Meade.

Navy-Lafayette Rewind
• In a game that featured three times and three lead changes, the Mids utilized a four-goal run in the second half to take the lead for good and capture their first Patriot League victory of the Rick Sowell era.
• The win snapped a three-game losing streak by the Mids who had last seen a win nearly a month prior against VMI on Feb. 11.
• The win also snapped a two-game road losing streak dating back to last season when the Midshipmen were a dismal 1-6 on the road.
• Sophomore attackman Sam Jones, who dealt out an assist in the second quarter, extended his point-scoring streak to nine-straight games.  His goal-scoring streak, however, was snapped at five games as he came up empty against the Leopards.
• Sophomore attackman Tucker Hull scored three goals and added five assists en route to producing his eighth-career hat trick and the fourth this year (VMI-6, Jacksonville-3, Bucknell-3, Lafayette-3).

• Colgate junior Peter Baum is leading the country with his 5.83 points per game (26G, 9A), while Navy sophomore attackman Tucker Hull stands second, averaging 5.40 points per contest (15G, 12A).
• Baum is also the nation’s top goal producer (4.33), while Hull is tied for ninth, scoring 3.00 goals per game.
• Hull has registered hat tricks in four of the five games this season.
