The younger brother of Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Virginia at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning. Tevin Chris Jones, 19, was raised by his older brother, whose family circumstances have been well chronicled during his career with the Maryland Terps and now the Ravens.
Torrey Smith has left the Ravens team hotel to be with his family and his official status for tonight’s home game with the New England Patriots is unknown. Smith posted this picture this morning of Tevin on his Twitter account @TorreySmithWR.
(4:30pm UPDATE-The Baltimore Sun is reporting Smith has returned to the team and intends to play Sunday night.)
Smith was notified at the Ravens’ downtown Baltimore team hotel shortly after 1 a.m. and left immediately to be with his family.
Head coach John Harbaugh met with Torrey before he left the hotel and issued this statement:
“This is devastatingly sad, sad news. Torrey and his family are a close, special family, and our hearts and thoughts reach out to all of them. Our hearts ache today. We pray for Tevin, his mother, Torrey and the rest of the family. God bless Tevin.”
Coach Harbaugh does not know if Smith will play against the Patriots tonight. “Torrey’s priority is his family. We understand that completely.”
Torrey is one of seven children of Monica Chante Jenkins.
The Ravens are leaving the decision to play up to Torrey Smith. ESPN has reported that Smith is expected to play.
