I’m not really that much of an A7X fan, but I will admit that I REALLY dig Corey Taylor and Stone Sour…

Make fun of me all you want. I dig Gary Puckett…

When I was a kid, I had no idea if the B-52′s were actually any good or if they were just sorta weird. As an adult, I’ve realized it’s both…

There isn’t much I would enjoy about a Lyle Lovett show. But “If I Had A Boat” would be something…

9. Baltimore Restaurant Week (Friday-Monday throughout Charm City), Baltimore County Restaurant Week (Tuesday-Monday throughout Baltimore County)

Another fat guy holiday?

Who knew Thanksgiving would come twice for us this year?!?!?

My favorite spot on the list might be a little joint in Little Italy Robert McClintock immortalized (and apparently Lee Smith’s favorite joint in Charm City)…

sabatinos

8. Boxing: Evander Holyfield vs. Sherman Williams (Saturday 9pm from White Sulphur Springs, WV live on Pay-Per-View); Mixed Martial Arts-UFC Fight Night: Fight For The Troops 2 (Saturday 9pm from Fort Hood, TX live on SpikeTV)

Holy hell Evander Holyfield is still fighting?!?!? Jamie Moyer thinks Evander Holyfield is old!

If Evander Holyfield managers to beat “Ask” Sherman Williams, I think I know who he should fight next (Language NSFW)…

7. NHL: Washington Capitals @ Philadelphia Flyers (Tuesday 7pm from Philadelphia live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ New York Islanders (Thursday 7pm from New York live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Capitals @ Toronto Maple Leafs (Saturday 7pm from Toronto live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS and NHL Network), New York Rangers @ Washington Capitals (Monday 7:30pm from Verizon Center live on VERSUS)

I don’t care about Caps hockey, but I like funny videos. Here’s a funny video of a Pittsburgh Penguins fan from the Winter Classic this year…

Yep. That was funny.

6. College Football: East West Shrine Game (Saturday 4pm from Orlando live on NFL Network)

Amongst the players in the East West Shrine Game is former Terrapins RB Da’Rel Scott. Or as he likes to call himself, a man whose spot was once blown up by Glenn Clark…

I thought I needed to carry two phones at one point. Life can be pretty tough when Camille Rowe is always trying to blow up your spot…

crowe
(Thanks Busted Coverage!)

5. Soccer: Chile @ Team USA (Saturday 10pm from Carson, CA live on ESPN3.com); MISL: Milwaukee Wave @ Baltimore Blast (Friday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena)

I’m not sure about this. I’m as patriotic as they come, so I’d always pull for the Red, White & Blue.

BUT…Chile happens to share a name with the restaurant that gave us Chicken Crispers…

crispers

4. US Lacrosse National Convention (Friday-Sunday Baltimore Convention Center)

Or as local marijuana dealers are calling it, Christmas Season Part 2.

Seriously, how much visine is necessary at a lacrosse convention?!?!? And has there ever been a bigger gathering of folks who listen to Dave Matthews Band and Phish???

Wait a second…I love Dave Matthews Band and Phish…

Okay, someone get me a ticket…

3. NFL Playoffs: NFC Championship Game-Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears (Sunday 3pm from Chicago live on FOX), AFC Championship Game-New York Jets @ Pittsburgh Steelers (Sunday 6:30pm from Pittsburgh live on CBS)

Well clearly this was GOING to be Number 1…right up until the 3rd quarter of the Ravens’ game at Heinz Field Saturday night. Then everything went to hell.

Like I need to remind you.

Now, I’d be open to other ideas for Saturday if you’ve got something better for me to do than watch football. Seriously. There’s no reason why I have to watch these games, especially if it involves having to watch those a-holes in the Steel City earn another Super Bowl berth.

My girlfriend wants me to go to the Horse World Expo with her at the Timonium Fairgrounds. I’ve never had even HALF an ounce of interest in it, but I think I’m going to go.

Or maybe I’ll just sit around at home in my underwear and play Wheel of Fortune on Facebook.

I just don’t want to think about it. It’s too painful.

2. Tennis: Australian Open (Tuesday 12am & 9pm, Wednesday & Thursday 11pm, Friday & Saturday 9pm, Sunday 7pm, Monday 9pm live on ESPN2; Tuesday-Friday 8am, Saturday 1pm, Sunday & Monday 8am live on Tennis Channel. All action from Melbourne, AUS)

In breaking news from Down Under, Maria Sharapova has a new line of tennis wear that she wants you to see…

sharapova
(Thanks again Busted Coverage. Solid week for you.)

Look, I’m personally just as interested in what’s going on with Mardy Fish and  Juan Martin Del Potro’s comeback attempt as I am in Maria Sharapova.

But…ummm….look at that again. What the hell else could possibly matter in the world?

1. College Basketball: Virginia Tech @ Maryland (Thursday 9pm from Comcast Center live on ESPN2), Clemson @ Maryland (Saturday 2:30pm from Comcast Center live on Raycom Sports-WNUV 54 in Charm City); Morgan State @ UMES (Monday 7:30pm Hytche Athletic Center); Coppin State @ UMES (Saturday 4pm Hytche Athletic Center); William & Mary @ Towson (Wednesday 7pm Towson Center), Virginia Commonwealth @ Towson (Monday 7pm Towson Center); Manhattan @ Loyola (Thursday 8pm Reitz Arena)

Here are two schools for which my level of dislike is TOTALLY underrated.

For as much as I like Malcolm Delaney, I can’t freaking STAND the Hokies. So why is it that I like everything about this picture?!?!?!?!

turkeyleg

And my dislike towards Clemson dates at LEAST as far back as my 12th grade journalism teacher Ms. Matasofsky…who LOVED the Tigers. It was a constant source of contention between us. I couldn’t ever understand why she didn’t like the Hangman t-shirt I wore at least once a week…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 09 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because I left “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” playing on a loop on my DVD player the other night, which means I’ve seen THIS scene play out about twenty times now since Thanksgiving. It hasn’t gotten old.

(Edit from GMC: You know damn well there’s an “F word” in this clip. Act accordingly.)

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says John Harbaugh didn’t intend to direct Tuesday night comments to all Baltimore fans

But there’s no doubt how folks in Charm City TOOK the comments, and that’s what Harbaugh is going to have to keep in mind moving forward.

I’m a little spent on Harbaugh comments following my column yesterday comparing him and former Ohio State coach John Cooper (you should go here and read it). I’ve talked to a number of football fans in town over the last 24 hours and there’s no question the comments stuck with fans.

I understand where John Harbaugh’s emotion came from Tuesday night. I understand that he’s as frustrated (if not more) than anyone in town right now.

But he HAS to be more respectful to fans-even when they’re insane. (Edit from GMC: Says the guy who loses his mind on football fans on a regular basis.)

It’s part of the job, whether he wants it to be or not.

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens LB Jameel McClain will appeal $40k fine

There’s no doubt McClain’s fine was a bit excessive for a first time offender who had no intent to hit Pittsburgh TE Heath Miller in the head. But something tells me the NFL has decided they need to make a statement in this case because the game was seen by a HUGE audience on NBC’s Sunday Night Football.

Make no mistake. This will absolutely be a significant issue as the NFLPA enters labor discussions this offseason and we head towards a potential lockout in 2011. If the league wants any concessions from players regarding revenue, they are almost certainly going to have to concede this outrageous fines even if they are simply trying to protect their players.

It’s not going to be an easy fight.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Ed Reed believes Steelers WR Hines Ward deserved fine as well

Speaking of fine, here’s a picture of Danielle Dwyer. (Thanks Brosome via Busted Coverage!)

danielled

4. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens lost CB Prince Miller to Detroit Lions, signed CB Danny Gorrer to practice squad

And before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-The Ravens return to the practice field at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today. Harbaugh, QB Joe Flacco, RB Ray Rice, LB Ray Lewis and others are scheduled to address the media. We’ll have full coverage, so make sure you stay tuned to AM1570 WNST, follow us on Twitter (@WNST) and keep checking back at WNST.net.

-Did you miss Ravens TE Ed Dickson with Drew Forrester Thursday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net today to check it out. Some other things you can hear in the Audio Vault include…

 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Thursday
 • Michael Bradley (Philadelphia Magazine)-who talked about his decision to not give his Heisman Trophy vote to Cam Newton with Drew Thursday
 • Our Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots From The Bleachers”, as Drew took a shot at Cam Newton winning the Heisman, and Glenn Clark took a shot at fans who don’t “get” the Army/Navy Game
 • Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News)-who went around the NFL with Rex Snider Wednesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • Barry Barnes (Fanhouse)-who went around the AFC North with Rex Wednesday
 • Jean Fugett Jr. (Former Washington Redskins & Dallas Cowboys TE)-who discussed the loss of Todd Heap with Rex Wednesday
 • Lee Hull (Terps WR Coach)-who joined Thyrl Nelson Wednesday for “The Terrapins Coaches’ Report”
 • Steve Beck (Military Bowl Executive Director)-who discussed the Maryland-East Carolina matchup with Thyrl Wednesday on “The Mobtown Sports Beat”
 • Mike Bauman (MLB.com)-who checked in with Thyrl Wednesday from the MLB winter meetings in Orlando
 • Plenty of audio from 1 Winning Drive Wednesday; including Dickson, Jameel McClain, Le’Ron McClain, Todd Heap, Derrick Mason, Anquan Boldin and Kelly Gregg
 • Post-game audio from Maryland’s win over UNC Greensboro last night; including Gary Williams, Jordan Williams, Cliff Tucker and Adrian Bowie

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so make sure you take a few minutes today to check it out. You know you want to.

5. MLB.com’s Kelly Thesier says Orioles, Minnesota Twins could finalize deal for JJ Hardy today

Between this and Mitch Atkins, I’m not sure how the Birds CAN’T win the World Series next year!

If they’re still looking to make a splash before the end of the meetings, I have a suggestion for Andy MacPhail. Consider Alina Vacariu. (Thanks Guyism!)

vacariu

(Edit from GMC: UPDATE-CBSSports.com now says the deal is done. Hooray!)

6. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says O’s agreed to terms with Koji Uehara on one year deal

I don’t know if this has ever happened before, but if I were the Orioles I might go ahead and consider a ticker tape parade BEFORE Spring Training.

The Orioles made other news Wednesday, as they distanced themselves from comments made by Luke Scott in an interview with Yahoo! Sports.

I can’t imagine why…

7. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Adrian Bowie, Cliff Tucker respond to adversity as Maryland crushed UNC Greensboro

The Spartans stink. That being said, even they could beat Penn State.

Gary Williams said after the game he considered making lineup changes following the Terps’ poor offensive output against Temple in the BB&T Classic.

Cliff Tucker said he didn’t know he was starting until earlier in the day Wednesday.

Gary Williams WANTS to stick with Tucker and Bowie all season. Fans want to see Terrell Stoglin and Pe’Shon Howard in the lineup.

What ends up happening will have everything to do with whether or not Tucker and Bowie can play with consistency over the next few weeks.

Maryland opens ACC play Sunday afternoon (4pm on Comcast SportsNet/Fox Sports Net) when they host Boston College at Comcast Center.

8. TowsonTigers.com says Josh Brown and Rashawn Polk scored 18 points each, but Towson couldn’t hold off George Washington in DC

A loss to the Colonials probably won’t impress anyone, but a six point game against GWU at the Smith Center is likely a sign of progress for Pat Kennedy’s team. One major problem from last night? They got just one point from Troy Franklin. I don’t think they’ll win many games that way.

Towson now heads to Catonsville next for a contest with UMBC at RAC Arena Saturday night. The Retrievers had a rough night last night, as they were pounded by Rider 81-39. I’d tell you something about that game, but what the hell is there to say?

9. The AP says Shane Walker & Robert Olson each scored 14, but Loyola lost to George Mason in Fairfax

Tough night for Jimmy Patsos’ Greyhounds last night at the Patriot Center.

In honor of the holiday season, I’m going to try to make some spirits bright here. Here’s a picture of Tehmeena Afzal. (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

afzal

10. Washington Post’s Eric Prisbell says Terrapins Offensive Coordinator James Franklin finalist for head coaching gig at Vanderbilt

This COULD end up being helpful for Kevin Anderson and the folks in College Park.

James Franklin did a HELL of a job with Danny O’Brien this season. Should he leave for the Commodores, his leadership would be missed.

But the Terps have a MESS on their hands with this transition. Either they’re going to have to force Ralph Friedgen out and give the job to Franklin (which didn’t seem so unlikely a season ago), or they’re going to have to dish out a million bucks they don’t have.

If Franklin heads to Nashville, Maryland avoids that problem. Either they can extend Friedgen should he have another good season or they can hire whatever available coach they want to hire.

But bear in mind-the leadership at the University of Maryland WANTED James Franklin to be the next head coach. The move wasn’t just made to keep him from going back to Kansas State. They ABSOLUTELY thought Franklin represented what they wanted in a head coach.

It’s just become a much stickier situation than they originally expected.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Time for a few new versions of “The Greatest Song(s) of All Time This Week.”

It’s a Christmas edition this time around.

The retro version of TGSOATTW is “Christmas Song” by Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds. WIN.

The new version is the version of “Last Christmas” they did on GLEE. Please don’t judge me because I like this.

Wednesday’s Afternoon Drive w/ Rex Snider

Posted on 24 November 2010 by Ryan Chell

Here is the lineup for “The Afternoon Drive” with Rex Snider:

Luke Jones joins Rex in studio! He’ll tell us what he’s thankful for. Hopefully it involves getting away from the future Steelers fans up in Pennsylvania:

Pittsburgh Steelers

These three seem to be okay though.

Steelers

2:10-Clifton Brown, Sporting News.

We’ll talk some NFL football with Clifton. Three big games on the slate tomorrow on Turkey Day.

The best one of the day? The World Champs in the New Orleans Saints versus a 3-win team in the Dallas Cowboys. John Harbaugh would call them “a damn good football team.”

Dallas Cowboys

3:10 Barry Barnes, AOL Fanhouse

Barry steps in for his weekly chat with Rex. The Buccaneers game was moved to 4:15 on Sunday, which means the NFL is throwing some respect toward the Bucs and the Ravens. Rex will also ask Barry where us here in Baltimore can send our contributions toward Richard Seymour’s fine for knocking the lights out of Ben Roethlisberger.

3:50 Kazy Brown, Ravens Fan Club-Los Angeles Chapter called “The West Wing”

Yes, there are Ravens fans in California. My uncle is actually one of them. We’ll talk with Kazy-who also has a hand in Warner Bros’ record business-about the Ravens and more.

4:30 Steve Gould, Baltimore Sun

Yes, the Orioles missed out on Victor Martinez yesterday by two million dollars to the Detroit Tigers(sure…). They then tried to keep us content by hiring Willie Randolph as bench coach. We’ll talk with Steve to see what direction the Orioles might go in free agency. It could be a short talk…

Willie Randolph

5:00 Ravens report with Glenn Clark

Glenn Clark checks in for the final Ravens report of the day and the last before Thanksgiving.

5:30-Mike Easterling, Huntsville Times(Alabama)

We got to see Philip Rivers’ brother, Stephen, and his highlight reel Monday night between the Chargers and the Broncos. Stephen recently committed to LSU, and he could be just as good as his brother-maybe better. Mike Easterling has seen him personally. We’ll see how good he really is-and Mike as well.

Live From Owings Mills: Ravens Hoping to Take Advantage of Buccaneers’ Youth

Posted on 24 November 2010 by Glenn Clark

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens (7-3) returned to work at 1 Winning Drive Wednesday, continuing preparations for Sunday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Buccaneers have skill players who are all relatively young in their NFL careers. QB Josh Freeman (22) is in his 2nd NFL season, RB Lagarrette Blount (23) is a rookie, WR Mike Williams (23) is a rookie, WR Sammie Stroughter (24) is in his 2nd season and WR Arrelious Benn (22) is a rookie. Even the team’s more veteran skill players are relatively young, as TE Kellen Winslow II is just 27 and RB Cadillac Williams is just 28.

Ravens Head Coach John Harbaugh said the team’s youth isn’t necessarily good news for the Ravens.

“They play like a bunch of kids” said Harbaugh. “They run around and get after it and they’re enthusiastic. I’m sure its got its pluses and its got its minuses. We’ll try to negate the pluses that the youth brings to the table and we’ll try to take full advantage of whatever those minuses are.”

The Buccaneers are the youngest team in the National Football League, and continued to get younger this week when they released veteran DL Ryan Sims (30).

LB Jarret Johnson downplayed the “mysterious” nature of a young team like the Bucs.

“We’re not (team) that play each other a lot” said Johnson. “But you’ve got adequate time during the week to get familiar with them, so it’s not going to be a mystery when we get out there.”

FLACCO DISMISSES MASON SPAT: Much like Harbaugh did during his Monday press conference, QB Joe Flacco was quick to dismiss a reported physical confrontation with WR Derrick Mason during their Week 11 win over the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.

“We were in a good battle and things happen on the sidelines sometimes” said Flacco. “I was laughing ten seconds after it was over.”

Flacco admitted that every sideline conversation is different, and some can be cause for concern moving forward.

“I guess it can be, but not between me and Derrick.”

PRACTICE REPORT: OL Chris Chester (infection) and DE Cory Redding (arm) did not participate during practice Wednesday. S Ed Reed (illness) did not participate either.

The Ravens received good news Wednesday, as S Tom Zbikowski (foot) returned to practice for the first time since suffering a bruised heel in the Ravens’ Week 6 loss to the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Zbikowski said Wednesday he was “feeling good”, and Harbaugh said Zbikowski has a “good chance” of seeing the field Sunday in Charm City. He was listed as a limited participant Wednesday, as was TE Ed Dickson (thigh).

FB Le’Ron McClain did not appear as though he would be participating in contact drills Wednesday.

For the Buccaneers, Winslow (knee) and DE Kyle Moore (shoulder) did not participate in practice Wednesday. LB Quincy Black (ankle), Stroughter (foot) and OT Jeremey Trueblood (knee) were all full participants in practice.

NOTES: Hear from Harbaugh, Flacco, Zbikowski, Johnson, LB Ray Lewis, RB Ray Rice and LB Terrell Suggs NOW in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net……Director of Player Personnel Eric DeCosta joined Drew Forrester Wednesday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST, you can hear that chat in the Audio Vault now as well……The Ravens will wear black uniforms Sunday when they face the Bucs……The Ravens will practice Thursday despite the Thanksgiving holiday

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 November 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because I (like every Wednesday), can add two songs to the “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” category.

The new honor goes to Dave Matthews Band, who KILLED “Squirm” when I saw them in Charlottesville last Friday. As I’ve said before, there was a time when I didn’t think “Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King” was deserving of the Album of the Year nod it was given by the Grammy Awards. I was TOTALLY wrong…

And TGSOATTW “Retro” version is a nod to the “family” event that is Thanksgiving. Here’s “Dance to the Music” by Sly & The Family Stone…

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Michael Oher, Le’Ron McClain, Haloti Ngata leading Pro Bowl voting at respective positions

Of this group, only McClain and Ngata have REALLY been the best players at their position in the AFC this season. Lewis has played at a Pro Bowl level but is leading in votes by reputation. Ed Reed has barely played but also has a reputation. Oher has had an up and down season, but there was a movie made about him.

Duffy points out that other Ravens are deserving of consideration for a trip to Hawaii. Joe Flacco, Anquan Boldin, Ray Rice and Billy Cundiff are certainly deserving of being in the conversation, Terrell Suggs might be as well.

The good news (for people who care about this type of thing) is that the reputation of the organization alone will get more players to the Pro Bowl.

I don’t necessarily care much about which players make the Pro Bowl, unless a deserving player comes up short (like was the case with Jarret Johnson a year ago). Only Ngata and McClain really look like “must” Pro Bowlers this season, so I don’t think I’ll be disappointed when the teams are announced.

2. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Ravens signed former Kansas City Chiefs OL Colin Brown to practice squad

Unreal.

You mean to tell me there was an open spot on the Ravens’ practice squad (after they promoted Bryan Mattison and released Scott Kooistra) and yet they DIDN’T sign Emanuela de Paula? RIDICULOUS! (Thanks Guyism!)

depaula

3. ESPN.com has Ravens 3rd in power rankings

And at 3rd, the Ravens are ahead of every other 7-3 team and even the 8-2 New York Jets. Just keep that in mind.

Before we move on from the Ravens, a couple of things…

-We’ll be out at 1 Winning Drive in Owings Mills today as the Ravens return to practice. We’re expecting to hear from John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, Ray Lewis and more around noon. Make sure you’re tuned in to AM1570 WNST, following us on Twitter @WNST and checking out WNST.net throughout the day!

-Did you miss Ravens Director of Player Personnel Eric Decosta with Drew Forrester Wednesday on “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST? Make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault today to check it out. Some other things you can hear in the Audio Vault today include…

 • Johnny Holliday (Legendary Terps PBP Voice)-who talked Terrapins football and basketball with Drew Wednesday
 • Sean Salisbury (“Sean Unfiltered”-Voice America Sports Radio)-who went around the NFL with Drew Wednesday
 • Joe Beninati (Washington Capitals Play by Play-Comcast SportsNet)-who talked puck with Drew Wednesday
 • Our Morning Reaction “Cheap Shots from the Bleachers”, as Drew resorted to BEGGING for the Orioles to get better players, and I got soft as I reflected on the community at Thanksgiving
 • Postgame audio from Maryland’s win over Delaware State Tuesday night, including Gary Williams, Cliff Tucker, Adrian Bowie and Dino Gregory
 • Jamey Eisenberg (CBSSports.com)-who talked Fantasy Football with Rex Snider Tuesday on “The Afternoon Drive”
 • Jorge Ortiz (USA Today) and Craig Calcaterra (“HardballTalk”-NBCSports.com)-who joined Allen McCallum and Rex Tuesday on “The MLB Report”
 • Andrew Perloff (Sports Illustrated)-who went around the AFC with Rex Wednesday
 • John Rallo (Shogun Fights)-who joined Thyrl Nelson for “The MMA Report” Tuesday

It’s all in the Audio Vault, so I’d get over there…like…ASAP…to check it all out. You’ve got a long weekend ahead. ENJOY!

4. WNST.net’s Ryan Chell says Orioles add bench coach Willie Randolph to staff

There’s a natural “I’ve heard of this guy so I’m excited about him” mentality that comes with hiring a former MLB manager for a coaching position.

My gut says that Willie Randolph will be a nice addition to Buck Showalter’s staff. That being said, we don’t really have any tangible reason to expect that Willie Randolph will make any sort of significant difference in Charm City.

Unless of course he could play first base and hit 40 home runs.

Of course, the Orioles were looking at Victor Martinez to do those things, right? Ummm…..

5. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Victor Martinez passed on O’s offer, signed with Detroit Tigers

Argh.

As I said this morning, I’m not going to give Andy MacPhail a pass here. If everything we’ve been told is true (the O’s offered 48 million and Martinez accepted 50 million in Motown without giving the O’s the chance to counter), I hope MacPhail learned a lesson.

That lesson is that no player REALLY cares about the team’s late season growth under Showalter and their decent young nucleus.

REAL players want to win and want to make money.

Simply competitive offers won’t get it done. The team is going to have to OVERPAY.

The Tigers themselves had to do it to get Magglio Ordonez and Ivan Rodriguez a few years back. It didn’t seem like smart business at the time, but it eventually helped the Tigers reach the World Series.

They knew what they had to do to get players. Andy MacPhail and the Orioles will have to do the same thing this year.

6. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Birds chose not to offer arbitration to Koji Uehara, Kevin Millwood

Obviously Millwood was never coming back, but I don’t know what to make of the Koji decision.

The good news here? With one (or both) of these guys gone, maybe the team can consider F.P. Santangelo…..’s future wife Michelle McLaughlin. (Thanks Busted Coverage!)

santangelo

7. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Cliff Tucker lead way with 15 points as Maryland topped Delaware State at Comcast Center

A lot of folks were upset that last night’s tilt with the Hornets wasn’t available on TV.

Don’t be upset. You didn’t miss a DAMN thing.

This one was never pretty, and seemed downright strange in the second half. DSU actually outscored the Terps 33-32 after halftime, but that was mostly because Gary Williams decided to play with some strange lineup combos, including one stretch where he had nothing but reserves on the floor.

Berend Weijs had a nice night last night. I don’t think Berend Weijs is REALLY an ACC player however. Then again, I didn’t think Dave Neal was an ACC player either.

Maryland returns to action Friday night against Elon, Luke Jones will host a “Turtle Power” live chat during the game.

8. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Terrapins OL Pete DeSouza hoping to return from accident in time for spring practice

This would be a very cool story if it were to play out that way. There was a thought that DeSouza’s football future wasn’t guaranteed in ANY way when he suffered the accident.

Should he return in the spring, it could provide a MAJOR lift to the entire program.

9. The AP says Aric Brooks scored 17 points to lead Morgan State past Western Illinois in Cancun

Kudos to Todd Bozeman and the Bears. If I was in Cancun, I’m not sure how focused I would be on the task at hand. Then again, the “Palace Arena” might help to humble me…

arena

A ballroom. An effing ballroom. Unbelievable. Eh…you’re still in Cancun.

10. The AP says Michael Harper lead way with 21 points as Coppin State topped UMBC as CSPEC

A couple of games today featuring local teams. Morgan plays a second game in as many days at the Cancun Challenge, as they face North Florida. Towson hosts Navy tonight at the Towson Center-that game tips at 7. Loyola visits Mike Lonergan and Vermont, that game tips at 7 as well.

And if all of that isn’t enough, here’s a picture of Monica Leigh, too! (Thanks The Smoking Jacket!)

monicaleigh

And finally, I leave you with this.

The Miz won the WWE Championship?!?!? AWE.SOME.!!!!!!!!!!!

When Thanksgiving and Horse Racing Meet

Posted on 23 November 2010 by Gary Quill

As a kid growing up in northeast Baltimore, Thanksgiving Day was much like any other household in the United States. Wake up by 9:00am to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, go outside for a quick pickup football game in Herring Run Park with whoever may show-up, return home in time to watch the early NFL game from Detroit and then…

Well, as I grew older it became apparent to me that my family’s Thanksgiving Day tradition took a small detour from the majority of Americans. That most families dinner commenced around 3pm, give or take an hour. Not so according to the Quill family Thanksgiving tradition. We could watch the Dallas football game until about halftime which was about the time my Pop-Pop Quill and great-uncle Ray would arrive at our house from a day at the track. Priceless!

That was back in the 60’s and early 70’s. I miss those days… and my Pop-Pop and Uncle Ray, who have long passed. And with their passing, so did the Quill family Thanksgiving Day tradition. My Dad and I are still able to enjoy a day at the races from time to time, but never on Thanksgiving Day. The Quill family is now scattered throughout our great country and over the past 20 years I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve been together on Thanksgiving Day. Be thankful if you can spend this Thanksgiving Day with your entire family and think about what tradition is special to you on the last Thursday in November.

Laurel Park has its own Thanksgiving Day tradition which they started 23 years ago, in giving away either a pumpkin or apple pie (after the 5th race). First race post for the nie-race card is 11:05 a.m. Pies will able available at both Laurel Park and Pimlico. For those who wish to arrive early to handicap the card, free donuts with coffee or cider will also be available from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. And if you get a call from home telling you they burnt the turkey, invite them to meet you at Laurel’s terrace dining room for a traditional, home-style Thanksgiving buffet for $23.

Friday will be “Guys Day Out” with free admission to Laurel Park’s nine-race program for all men, half-priced draft beers and giveaways, including chances to win tickets to Baltimore Ravens, Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals games and a $200 gift card to Bass Pro.

The holiday week continues Saturday afternoon with a nine-race card and more drawings. Prizes include a 60” HD LCD television, a $200 gift card to Best Buy, a $100 gift card to Lowes and a pair of $100 gift cards to Corridor Fine Wine. First post for Friday and Saturday will be 12:35 p.m. It’s a great time to enjoy Maryland thoroughbred horse racing.

If you are fortune enough to have Wednesday afternoon free in preparation of Thanksgiving, then you might be interested in taking in Laurel’s card. It features MD-bred gelding Ben’s Cat, who will attempt to remain undefeated as he goes for number 8 in the 8th race. If you need some help with your selections, you can always get my opinions at GQ’s No Chalk Zone.

Best of Luck and hope you have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Uggla goes to Braves for ‘NUTS; MacPhail evidently doesn’t have any …..

Posted on 17 November 2010 by Rex Snider

I would love to know where Andy MacPhail spent his Tuesday afternoon. Enjoying Space Mountain @ Disney World? Shopping for a new red sweater vest? Planning his Thanksgiving holiday?

I’ll imagine Major League Baseball’s annual General Managers meetings, in Orlando, are a rather dull affair. Can you bear the thought of eating a big lunch and being subjected to a mid-afternoon speech by Bud Selig?

But, I’m very curious about Andy MacPhail’s day and exactly how it unfolded.

Maybe, he was distracted. Maybe, he was agonizing over his stay in Central Florida, especially as one of his favorite musical artists was rolling into Baltimore and priming for a big Tuesday night concert, at 1st Mariner Arena …..

July 30, 2010 - New York, New York, U.S. - CARRIE UNDERWOOD on NBC's ''Today'' Show Toyota Concert Series at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City on 07-30-2010. I14930KBA. © Red Carpet Pictures

Seriously, Andy, please just tell us your phone never rang.

Can you confirm a call from the Florida Marlins never arrived?

Tell us Larry Beinfest didn’t at least shoot a quick email or text message to gauge your interest in Dan Uggla.

Heck, we’ll even accept something crazily convenient, like the “I didn’t know he was available” excuse …..

Tell us ANYTHING, except “we weren’t interested.”

To be honest, when yesterday’s news of Uggla’s trade to the Atlanta Braves became public, my first reaction was anything, but surprising. We heard he was being shopped and rumors circulated around the Toronto Blue Jays as a possible destination for the power-hitting infielder.

I even discussed those rumors with Blue Jays’ radio voice, Alan Ashby, during yesterday’s AFTERNOON DRIVE.

Ashby speculated on Toronto’s interest and he indicated the team would likely move Uggla to 3rd base, if acquired. They already have a 2nd baseman in Aaron Hill, but they need to fill a vacancy at the hot corner.

When Uggla was ultimately dealt to Atlanta, yesterday, I reasoned Toronto’s offer wasn’t good enough.

I understand the business of baseball. And, like I said, I really didn’t have much of a reaction to news of the trade.

However, when I learned what the Braves gave up in acquiring Uggla, I did wonder what the Blue Jays offered for him.

I don’t care if it’s lame to be into TSO. I’m freaking WAY into TSO. And frankly, since when did someone not think I was lame???

Playing For Change may be the coolest concept since the invention of music. Which I believe happened midway through the 20th century when four lads from Liverpool got together. Correct?

You know how college basketball fans always chant “overrated” when they knock off a good team? I’d like to chant “underrated” at a Karl Denson show…

And since my love for TSO has already established me as being lame, I’ll just go ahead and pile on by adding that I freaking DIG Keith Urban like whoa. Yes. Like whoa.

9. Thanksgiving Turkey Taste-Off (Saturday 11am Whole Foods Culinary Center Annapolis)

For the record, I have not decided where to go yet for Thanksgiving this year. I mean, the great Tom Clark and Karen Clark will PROBABLY get me, but if you’re willing to offer one of these, I would be more than willing to come to your house and break down the Ravens’ 53 man roster all day…

turducken

(Edit from GMC: Or could someone just bring a turducken by 1550 Hart Rd. one day this week? That would work just as well. Hugs and kisses.)

8. High School Football-MPSSAA Playoffs Regional Finals-4A West: Sherwood @ Gaithersburg (Friday 7pm), 4A North: Patterson @ Urbana (Friday 7pm), 4A South: Eleanor Roosevelt @ Wise (Saturday 1pm), 4A East: Broadneck @ Arundel (Friday 7pm), 3A West: Quince Orchard @ Damascus (Friday 7pm), 3A North: Franklin @ North Harford (Friday 7pm), 3A South: Huntingtown @ Friendly (Friday 7pm), 3A East: Wilde Lake @ River Hill (Friday 7pm), 2A West: South Carroll @ Middletown (Friday 7pm) 2A North: City @ Eastern Tech (Friday 7pm CCBC-Essex), 2A South: Hammond @ McDonough (Friday 7pm), 2A East: Fallston @ Queen Anne’s (Friday 7pm), 1A West: Fort Hill @ Mountain Ridge (Friday 7pm), 1A North: Brunswick @ Western Tech (Friday 7pm CCBC-Catonsville), 1A South: Dunbar @ Forest Park (Saturday 1pm Poly High School), 1A East: Bohemia Manor @ Havre De Grace (Friday 7pm)

You know, I never thought I’d forgive Franklin High School for the Homecoming beatdown they gave my Perry Hall Gators in ’08. BUT…they have EVERY opportunity to regain my love this week.

This man MUST lose.

brinkman

(Edit from GMC: I’m talking about the ass in the back. Not the poor kid in the front. Unless he’s a Steelers fan too. Then count him in.)

Ken Brinkman is the football coach at NHHS, and he brought the Pittsburgh Steelers to Harford County and LAUGHED about it.

He’s an ass, and his Hawks sadly must pay for it. Therefore, GO INDIANS! Scalp the Hawks!

7. Soccer: Team USA @ South Africa (Wednesday 2pm from Cape Town live on ESPN2), MISL-Chicago Riot @ Baltimore Blast (Saturday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena); College Soccer: NCAA Tournament-Bucknell/Penn winner @ Maryland (Sunday 5pm Ludwig Field)

And a shoutout to Pete Caringi’s UMBC Retrievers, who open the NCAA Tournament Thursday night at Princeton as well.

As far as this USA/South Africa match is concerned, I’m a bit confused. I mean, all summer I thought we were supposed to secretly be rooting for South Africa. Are we now supposed to hate them?

I’m torn, like Natalie Imbruglia. (Thanks Chad Dukes!)

I mean, how can I root against the country that gave us THIS?!?!?

6. Auto Racing: NASCAR Ford 400 (Sunday 1pm from Homestead-Miami, Florida live on ESPN)

I know folks are supposed to care about this event because it involves a showdown between Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick in the last race of “The Chase for the Cup.” But of course no one outside of Alabama (not named Rex Snider anyway) actually gives a crap.

Hell, does anyone even know what Cup it is that these dudes are chasing? The Winston Cup? The Nextel Cup? The Piston Cup from “Cars”?

I THINK it’s the Sprint Cup, but honest to God I don’t know that for sure.

In fact, if you told me that the Cup in question was THIS one, I’d probably be apt to believe you…

cupnoodles

5. Pro Wrestling: WWE Survivor Series (Sunday 8pm from Miami live on Pay-Per-View)

Question: What is it that Ashley Valence does for WWE?

ashleyv

Answer: Whatever the hell she wants.

4. Mixed Martial Arts-UFC 123: Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Lyoto Machida (Saturday 10pm from Detroit live on Pay-Per-View); Strikeforce: Challengers (Friday 10pm from Jackson, Mississippi live on Showtime)

You know what I love? I love the fact that Rampage Jackson is an absolute MANIAC and doesn’t even bother trying to hide it from anyone. The dude is certifiably insane, and everyone is just cool with it.

The real question is…would you rather be hit by Rampage Jackson or ran over by a sumo wrestler? Cue Sport Science…

3. College Football: Florida State @ Maryland (Saturday 8pm from Byrd Stadium live on ABC); Arkansas State @ Navy (Saturday 3:30pm from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium live on CBS College Sports); Hampton @ Morgan State (Saturday 4pm Hughes Stadium)

Credit Thyrl Nelson for this.

I think I’m going to offer former Seminoles LB (and Ravens LB and Dunbar grad) Tommy Polley one of those types of side bets that governors usually put together.

I figured I’d offer him a bushel of crabs, and in return he can offer me…some free shoes!

fsu
(Thanks to Rich in Westminster for the pic!)

2. College Basketball-2K Sports Classic: Maryland vs. Pittsburgh (Thursday 7pm from New York live on ESPN2), Maryland vs. Illinois/Texas (Friday Time TBA from New York live on ESPN2); Central Connecticut State @ UMBC (Saturday 7pm RAC Arena); UMBC @ Loyola (Wednesday 7pm Reitz Arena), Dartmouth @ Loyola (Sunday 12pm Reitz Arena); Coppin State @ Towson (Tuesday 7:30pm Towson Center)

The good news? I already hate Pittsburgh anyway!

Come watch the Terps take on the Panthers from MSG with US on Thursday night! We’ll be hanging out at the Fullerton Pub (and the Down Under Restaurant) for our “Rub Elbows With The Stars” event. We need you to bring out some canned goods, as we’re collecting 1570 cans this holiday season.

Interestingly enough, 1570 might also be the number of points Pe’Shon Howard needs to score to keep the Terrapins in the game Thursday night. And I’m not so certain he won’t…

1. NFL: Baltimore Ravens @ Carolina Panthers (Sunday 1pm from Charlotte live on CBS)

A recommendation…come to Whisky River in the Queen City Saturday for the big WNST Saturday night pep rally. While you’re there you can buy me a drink…or twelve. It will be a good time!

I usually use this space to make fun of the team the Ravens are playing, but the Carolina Panthers? I mean, do I have to rub it in?

Instead, here’s some Eric Church. Enjoy the soothing feeling before this weekend’s asskicking…

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 22 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday……….I think.

Let’s just get this out of the way. Allow Michael Stipe and R.E.M. to set the tone for our day…

So….there you go.

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. The AP’s Nicholas K. Geranios says Korie Lucious’ heroics lifted Michigan State past Maryland in NCAA Tournament 2nd round

After avoiding SportsCenter and ESPNNews as much as possible yesterday-we will remember this once more, and then burn the tape….

6.6 seconds separated Greivis Vasquez from writing one more “greatest moment” in his own Maryland career.

Well, 6.6 seconds and the fact that Tom Izzo thought twice about taking a timeout in the background.

Spare me the “Maryland should have pressed there” comments. 1-Maryland’s press WAS successful late in the game, but had previously lead to a few hundred open looks from 3 for Durrell Summers. Maryland couldn’t have that there. 2-The ONE thing you CAN’T have there is a foul. If a kid hits a shot and beats you, so be it. But you CAN’T foul and give them free throws to win.

A lot of people think they know a lot about a lot of subjects. But yesterday’s game was fairly simple. One team nearly stole away a game with a miracle, the other team used a miracle to win. Read on…

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Lucious’ shot will be remembered amongst glorious March moments by hoops fans, yet will anger Terps fans for eternity

As I said in the blog, now we know how Kentucky fans feel every time they have to see a replay of Christian Laettner’s three ball.

If you’re not a college hoops fan, think about how Phillies fans must feel every time they see a replay of Joe Carter’s home run. Or how Bills fans feel every time they see a replay of the “Music City Miracle” against the Titans in Nashville. Or how Patriots fans feel every time they see a replay of David Tyree’s catch in Super Bowl XLIII. It HURTS them.

Prepare to deal with the hurt for some time. This time next week, CBS will be showing replays as Michigan State prepares to play Northern Iowa in the Sweet 16. This time next March, CBS and ESPN will be showing replays as Maryland (hopefully) and Michigan State prepare for the Big Dance. This time 5 years from now, there will be retrospectives and “Where are they now?” pieces on Korie Lucious.

It will still hurt then. It might not be the sting that it is today, but it will still hurt.

3. Spokane Spokesman-Review’s Steve Bergum says Spartans played 2nd half of win over Terrapins without former Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas

And clearly, it made a difference down the stretch-which we all knew it would. If Lucas was on the floor, it is likely that the Terps would have NEVER gotten back into the game late, as he would have been a crucial part of beating the Gary Williams press.

That being said-and we talked about this on “The Comcast Morning Show” this morning on AM1570-the players on the floor have to be able to beat the press. When Duke came back from down 10 in the final 54 seconds to beat Maryland at Cole Field House, Terps fans bellyached that things would have been different had Drew Nicholas not been forced to run the point with Steve Blake disqualified by fouls. That’s absolutely true, but Nicholas NEEDED to be able to make free throws-even as a sophomore-or he shouldn’t have been on the floor.

Whoever was on the floor for Michigan State-no matter the reason-SHOULD have been able to break the press. They couldn’t. Had they lost, there would have been plenty of people that would have said “they wouldn’t have lost had Kalin Lucas not been hurt.” They would have been right, and it would have been irrelevant.

Before I move on, I’m reminded of a REALLY good song by Unwritten Law. The spelling’s different, but the name remains the same….

Of course, that song name would have worked in this classic Family Guy scene that always makes me giggle.

(Edit from GMC: On days like today, it’s good to giggle.)

4. Washington Post’s Mike Wise says ‘stake through the heart’ necessary to end Greivis Vasquez’s tenure in College Park

Allright, I guess we have to move on from the subject-as what else can be said about the end to a TREMENDOUS career for Greivis Vasquez. The sad part about it is that for as good as he’s been, he played only 6 NCAA Tournament games in his 4 year career. That isn’t a great number. Juan Dixon played six….teen.

Before I move on, some quick thoughts on how I spent my first post-Maryland season Sunday night. As you all know, baseball doesn’t do a whole hell of a lot for me, and there is no lacrosse on Sunday nights. While we’ll still get one late-afternoon basketball game next week, this is really when Sunday nights go south until the fall.

I watched some of the UFC Fights, although I thought at one point that even I was going to be elbowed by Cheick Kongo in the process. My roommate made me watch some of the healthcare coverage, which only lead to my poor girlfriend (you know her, “The Luckiest Dang Gal on the Face of the Planet”) getting REALLY confused. I watched Family Guy, and did my damndest not to laugh at the Terri Schiavo musical scene. I really did.

I also watched a replay of another Andy Roddick failure (this time in the finals at Indian Wells) and some of the Tiger Woods interviews. It all left me wanting some more quality Sunday night television. Like, isn’t it about time this gal got a new show…

megan

5. Inside Lacrosse’s Tommy Kehoe says hat tricks from Christian Pastirik, Matt Hughes not enough as Towson fell to Virginia at Unitas Stadium

Clearly, this lacrosse season is starting to shape up as a small group of “haves” (Virginia, Syracuse, North Carolina, Maryland, maybe Princeton, Cornell and Hofstra as well) and a big group of “have nots.”

A shakeup in my “OldLineLax7″ Poll….

1-Maryland
2-Loyola
3-Johns Hopkins
4-Navy
5-Towson
6-Mt. St. Mary’s
7-UMBC

If you would have told me the Mountaineers would have had more wins than either the Retrievers or the Tigers at this point, I would have said you were INSANE. Of course, they have played an easier schedule.

6. Maryland Official Site says Terps women topped East Carolina, advanced to third round of WNIT

So….yay!

Next up for Brenda Frese’s team is a Thursday night matchup against the Old Dominion/Providence winner at Comcast Center.

So….yay!

(Edit from GMC: I’d like to be excited about this. I really would. And for the record, I’m rooting for them. I’m also rooting for Syracuse, because…well….I could use the cash.)

7. MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki says Kevin Millwood solid as Birds topped Phillies in Clearwater

Which means that between the Orioles’ Top 2 pitchers in the rotation, 1 has had a good start during Spring Training.

One good start.

(Edit from GMC: I’m really not freaking about Kevin Millwood’s struggles during Grapefruit League play. I’m MUCH more concerned about Jeremy Guthrie’s struggles. He DOESN’T have the track record. I’m also MUCH more concerned about figuring out how a girl like the one pictured below could be from Philly…)

phillies

8. The Sun’s Peter Schmuck and Dan Connolly say Brian Roberts had ‘no problem’ taking swings from left or right side of plate

Please, please spare me the “switch hitter” jokes. Mostly because I’ve already thought of ALL of them.

I’m sure it goes without saying that the O’s are MUCH better off if B-Rob is in the lineup 2 weeks from tomorrow night at Tropicana Field. But….I’ll say it anyway, because that’s why I’m paid the big bucks.

That and because I was once again crowned the king of duckpin bowling Saturday night at Stoneleigh Lanes. I took 2 out of 3 games from Nestor Aparicio spawn Barry Aparicio…and he’s from Dundalk!

He wanted me to remind everyone that he actually posted the highest score of the night in the 3rd game. I reminded him that doing that is sort of like having a gal tell you that she thinks you look like Jack Black…..

jackblack

I mean….it’s better than being told you like Ray Bachman….

bachman

9. Examiner Jay Trucker says Orioles sent Caleb Joseph, Blake Davis, Luis Bernardo, Miguel Abreu, Matt Angle, Michel Hernandez to minor league camp

And they’ll be missed.

It’s not REALLY all that bad going from Birds’ Spring Training in Sarasota to minor league Spring Training in Sarasota. I mean, other than the food. It’s sort of like going from Capital Grille…

capgrille

to McDonald’s….

mcdonalds

10. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Ravens will learn whether they’re playing Monday Night Football opener/Thanksgiving night game, compensatory picks fate during annual NFL meetings in Orlando

No thanks to the trip to East Rutherford on Thanksgiving night. Yes please to a Monday Night Football game at M&T Bank Stadium to open the season.

That is all.

11. Baltimore Blast Official Site says regular season ended with 19-12 loss to KiXX in Philadelphia

Now the Blast open the playoffs Friday night in Monterrey-with Game 2 against La Raza next Monday in Charm City.

12. Fayetteville Observer says Baltimore Mariners roughed up Fayetteville Guard 59-0 at 1st Mariner Arena

It’s not that I’m NOT excited about Mariners football, I’m just MORE excited to find out if the Lingerie Football League team will be playing in the same building….

lfl

And finally, I leave you with this.

I won’t be able to watch Maryland anymore during CBS’ coverage of the NCAA Tournament, but I WILL be able to jam out to this Kevin Rudolf/Lil’ Wayne jam…..
