Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 14 October 2009 by Glenn Clark

Barry Levinson’s documentary “The Band That Wouldn’t Die” last night on ESPN was OUTSTANDING.

It was a beautiful story told about the city of Baltimore, and the role the Baltimore Colts Marching Band played in bridging the gap between the Colts’ departure and the Ravens’ arrival.

It was a really well put together documentary. In fact, it made me FURIOUS that ESPN did not have Levinson put together their ’58 Championship Game doc last December-which they butchered terribly.

I can’t recommend you watching this enough. Jim Irsay’s insight was especially interesting. I thought he did a good job of saying he loved his father, but understood what a terrible person he had become.

I really can’t say this enough. The documentary was powerful. It was moving. It was probably what I should have expected from someone has talented as Barry Levinson.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Friday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 09 October 2009 by Glenn Clark

Here are your weekend picks:

Ravens 24, Bengals 16

Everything comes down to red zone defense. If the Ravens keep Ochocinco and Benson out of the end zone, they’ll win. If they don’t…..this one could be close.

Wake Forest 30, Maryland 27

I think Maryland is improving; but they have ALWAYS struggled with outside running. If Wake can get the ball outside early, the Terps will be in trouble.

Navy 34, Rice 17

Rice is not any good at all. Navy hasn’t been putting up points the way they have in the past; but they won’t have a problem against the Owls.

Towson 10, Rhode Island 9

It won’t be pretty. But I think Rob Ambrose’s spirit can will his team to another win Saturday.

Morgan State 23, North Carolina A&T 10

The Bears are playing good football. They won’t lose at Hughes Stadium.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 06 October 2009 by Glenn Clark

RAVENS REPORT CARD:

Quarterback: B

I actually was going to give Joe a “B+” for the game, but after talking to national scouts and some people with the Ravens; I was told I was being OVERLY fair. Joe really struggled in the first half, looking nervous early on. He targeted Derrick Mason too much early on, and then zeroed in on his first receivers too much the rest of the game, not finishing progression. But he played well, almost well enough to win.

Running Backs/Fullbacks: B

Just a shame they didn’t get the ball more. Ray Rice had some stumbling problems, and they didn’t get one yard when they needed it most.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: C+

This was tough, as Derrick Mason was great early, but didn’t get going much the rest of the way. Kelley Washington and Todd Heap weren’t targeted much, and we all know what happened with Mark Clayton. It wasn’t as if they played poorly, but there wasn’t enough there to give them a high grade.

Offensive Line: B+

What Michael Oher did in moving from one side to the other was REALLY impressive, but it wasn’t the best game of the season for this unit otherwise. Chris Chester had a tough time after playing the best football of his career for the first 3 games.

Defensive Line: B

Actually a very good effort from this unit, but they did allow the Patriots some 6-9 yard rushes early in the game that opened things up for Tom Brady. The pressure was better though.

Linebackers: A-

I thought this group played really well. They got pressure; Terrell Suggs and Jarret Johnson made big plays, and Ray Lewis was all over the field. Even Dannell Ellerbe contributed in his first game action.

Secondary: B-

The safeties are not usually the issue in this unit. But Domonique Foxworth played pretty well (other than when Randy Moss pushed him out of the way) and Frank Walker made another really nice play.

Special Teams: B

Chris Carr’s gaffe really set the tone for the game, and it was a bad tone. Lardarius Webb played well. They’ll miss Brendon Ayanbadejo.

Coaching: B-

The play-calling was CLEARLY suspect from Cam Cameron. It might not have lost the game, but it didn’t help.

Tuesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

From everything I’ve gathered, the Jordan Williams situation is not a big deal for the Terps. Certainly it is embarrassing, but it doesn’t appear to be anything that will affect Jordan Williams moving forward on the court. In fact, the charges can possibly be dismissed if Jordan agrees to participate in an anger management program.

I do not know the details of the arrest (nor does anyone else), but from what I could gather in speaking to people yesterday who know about law enforcement, these are usually the types of charges that come from minor incidents where a fight was involved. It shouldn’t reflect on Jordan Williams being some sort of violent character.

With all of that being said, it is NOT okay for a Division 1 athlete to put himself in those types of situations. Jordan Williams is an important part of what is expected to be a renaissance for Gary Williams’ program. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jordan was suspended for the exhibition game this season (similar to how Greivis Vasquez was last season), but I would find any further punishment unlikely.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say….

SOME QUICK THOUGHTS:

-I hear Drew talking about how the Orioles should be a 70+ win next season, and I can only think to myself “with what players?” Having Chris Tillman and Brian Matusz take a step forward would only solve PART of this organization’s problem.

-Tom Kelly? I guess. Certainly he’s a guy who knows a thing or two about winning, but I think if the Orioles are really committed to winning, they need to go with a younger guy who can grow with the players but already knows about winning. I said before that Bob Melvin would be my guy, and I still think he should be.

-The Ravens WILL have interest in bringing back Prescott Burgess, but I doubt he ends up back in Baltimore. Burgess was let go because the team just didn’t have room for him on the roster anymore. They don’t suddenly have any.

Talk to you tomorrow.

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 28 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Here’s your Ravens Report Card for their win over the Browns:

Quarterback: A-

I know he put up a personal record 342 yards in the victory, but there WERE areas where Joe could improve. He STILL seems to overthrow Ray Rice in dangerous spots on the field; but he has been very good otherwise.

Running Backs: A

In fairness, Drew and I could have probably run behind the holes that offensive line was giving them. The only area that this unit could improve is seeing more explosiveness from space from Ray Rice. That will come with his touches. Willis McGahee has been absolutely tremendous.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: A-

Kelley Washington and Derrick Mason were tremendous again yesterday. It was nice to see LJ Smith get involved as well. It is still frustrating to not see Demetrius Williams contribute.

Offensive Line: A+

I would put more pluses on this if I could. That was one of the most impressive performances I have EVER seen from an offensive line. Only Jared Gaither’s penalty was a mistake. Through three weeks, this has been the team’s best unit.

Defensive Line: A

Not that I thought the Browns would run on this team, but they didn’t. There could still be more pressure here, but we’re basically nitpicking.

Linebackers: A-

Need more pressure, and they cannot lose their assignments like they did a couple times yesterday on short passing plays. Otherwise, this was another very good game for their unit.

Secondary: B+

This is going to look like a bad grade, but it isn’t. Ed Reed with a bad penalty on Joshua Cribbs (he said he thought the ball was uncatchable, but he clearly mistimed that hit), and Mike Furrey wiggled free a few times. But they really did play well.

Special Teams: B+

Again, B+ is a REALLY good grade. Don’t forget that. This team needs to figure out what’s going on in the return game. They really need more explosiveness, and ability to use returns as an offensive weapon. Chris Carr has been disappointing. He doesn’t need TD’s, he just needs to create.

Coaching: A

I thought (like Drew) that John Harbaugh left Joe Flacco in the game too long. Other than that, it is hard to criticize a win like that.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…..

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 September 2009 by Glenn Clark

Just to follow up on something we were talking about this morning….

Ralph Friedgen is not going to be fired. James Franklin will be the next head coach.

They have a contract that stipulates that. The country, the state, and the school are all in a recession. I don’t think Ralph Friedgen SHOULD be fired, but the poin I’m trying to make is that it doesn’t matter. He’s not going to be.
James Franklin will be the next head coach unless James Franklin decides not to be (or something particularly crazy happens).
