Towson begins national search for Waddell replacement

It is with Tiger Pride and sadness that we announce the departure of Towson University Athletics Director Mike Waddell, effective June 10.  Mr. Waddell has taken a new position as a Senior Associate Athletics Director at the University of Arkansas.

“In a relatively short amount of time, Mike Waddell began an impressive transformation of Towson University’s NCAA Division I Intercollegiate athletics program,” said Towson University President Dr. Maravene Loeschke.  “We wish him well at the University of Arkansas, and we know that he will bring the same energy, leadership, and excellence to his new job as he did here at Towson.  He will be missed. The TU community wishes Mr. Waddell and his family all the best in his new endeavor.”

During the 2012-13 athletics season, student athlete academic achievement significantly improved, with more than 131 players achieving a 3.5 GPA or higher.  Student-athletes engaged in more than 10,000 hours of service in the Baltimore community.  Towson captured six CAA championships and four Tiger coaches were named CAA Coach of the Year.  Five Towson student-athletes were named CAA Player of the Year, nine Towson student-athletes were selected as All-Americans, and more than 53 were named to All-Conference status.  Finally, the Towson men’s basketball team recorded the biggest NCAA single-season turnaround in the history of college basketball.

As Towson’s AD, Waddell successfully negotiated a multi-media rights partnership with CBS Collegiate Sports Properties that expanded the department’s development staff and led to record totals in annual giving over the last two years. He also recently secured a new multi-year footwear and apparel agreement with Baltimore-based Under Armour.

An interim Athletics Director has not yet been determined. A national search will begin immediately for a permanent Athletics Director.

Waddell departs Towson for Senior Associate AD post at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE – Towson University Director of Athletics Michael Waddell has been named Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations and Strategic Communications at the University of Arkansas it was announced by Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long on Monday.

Waddell will join the athletic department’s senior leadership team and oversee the department’s external areas including marketing, licensing, media relations, public relations, ticket operations and RazorVision. He will also be the department’s liaison with the new SEC Network leading the program’s strategic engagement with the new television channel and digital platform.

Since October 2010, Waddell has served as the Director of Athletics at Towson University in suburban Baltimore, Maryland. At Towson, Waddell was the lead administrator for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) program which features more than 500 student-athletes and 150 coaches and staff. During the 2012-13 season, the Tigers claimed six (6) CAA Championships, had four (4) coaches named CAA Coach of the Year, five (5) student-athletes named CAA Player of the Year, nine (9) All-Americans and more than 53 named to All-Conference status, while also having 131 student-athletes achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher and while engaging the Greater Baltimore Community with more than 10,000 hours of service. Waddell also positioned Towson as one of the country’s most progressive programs in the areas of marketing, communications and corporate sponsorships, including soon to be naming rights for Towson’s new 5,200-seat venue which will open next month and a new multi-year footwear and apparel agreement with Baltimore-based Under Armour.

“Michael is a tremendous addition to our administrative team and will provide Razorback Athletics an informed perspective to help our program capitalize on the valuable exposure opportunities we will have moving forward,” Long said. “With our program’s continued success and the launch of the SEC Network, it is important that we strategically coordinate our messaging to effectively tell the story of Razorback Athletics and the extraordinary success of our more than 460 student-athletes. Michael’s proven leadership and diversified experience within intercollegiate athletics will enable us to bring all of our external communication and marketing resources together to accomplish that goal.”

During his tenure at Towson, Waddell developed a program motto of “EXPECT SUCCESS,” that quickly helped re-shape the department and led to many accomplishments of the program on and off the field. The 2012-13 men’s basketball team capped off a dramatic reformation, going from 1-31 in 2011-12 to 18-13 this season, the biggest one-year turnaround in the history of college basketball.  Early in his tenure, Waddell negotiated a multi-media rights partnership with CBS Collegiate Sports Properties and expanded the department’s development staff leading to record totals in annual giving over the last two years.

In 2010-11, Towson Athletics embarked on “telling its own story” with a new technology-first approach starting with its web presence and the addition of more video content and daily features on the student-athletes and coaches. The results was an increase of 500 percent of page views to the department’s website and an increase of more than 200 percent of the site’s unique visitors.

“I am excited to join the Arkansas Razorback Family and to work with the outstanding student-athletes, coaches, administration and staff at the University of Arkansas,” Waddell said. “The opportunity to work with a program that has a rich, long-standing tradition and for an athletics director in Jeff Long who has proven to be one of the most innovative and proactive in all of college athletics is something that I am eager to engage. With his leadership, Towson developed one of the nation’s most comprehensive class attendance policies which led to increased academic performance including a program-wide GPA of 3.07. Towson also implemented a new structure to the areas of Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning by integrating the two areas for improved cohesiveness placing Towson at the forefront of student-athlete care.

Prior to being named the athletic director at Towson, Waddell spent five years as a Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations at the University of Cincinnati. At Cincinnati, Waddell’s primary responsibility was to oversee the revenue generating areas that included marketing/fan development, ticket sales/customer service, sports communications, game day programming, and information technology. He coordinated all of Cincinnati’s football bowl planning, including back-to-back BCS Bowl Appearances in 2009 (FedEx Orange Bowl) and 2010 (Allstate Sugar Bowl).

Acclaimed for his marketing strategies, 10 of the Bearcats’ top 11 all-time largest football crowds were recorded on his watch. Football season tickets sales rose 122 percent, attendance was up 83 percent and overall season tickets revenues grew by 170 percent.  Waddell was Cincinnati’s liaison with IMG College – the multimedia and corporate sponsorships rights-holder for UC athletics; adidas – the Bearcats’ official footwear and apparel outfitter; and with ESPN, the exclusive television partner of the Big East. His efforts in renegotiating Cincinnati’s multimedia sponsorships agreement resulted in a net gain of $14 million over the term of the IMG College agreement.

Developing the UC website as a communications and recruiting tool was a focus. The site was redesigned, adding video, audio and a handful of bloggers producing original content on a daily basis. Traffic to the site increased 247 percent in his last three years with the program.

Prior to his Cincinnati assignment, Waddell served as the Associate Athletics Director for External Relations at the University of Akron where sports marketing revenues increased more than five-fold during his tenure through the creation of the “Team Akron” corporate patron program.

In 2006, Waddell received the Sales & Marketing Executives International’s Distinguished Sales & Marketing Award. His “Fear the Roo” campaign at Akron won the NACMA’s 2005-06 “Best of Show” as the nation’s top collegiate sports revenue generating initiative.

During his tenure as Akron’s Interim Director of Athletics the school made its first and only postseason football bowl appearance in the 2005 Motor City Bowl while its No. 1 ranked men’s soccer team also advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight before bowing out to eventual national champion Maryland.

Before joining the Akron staff, Waddell served as the director of marketing and broadcasting at the United States Military Academy at West Point where he was responsible for the development of all athletics corporate partnerships, marketing, promotions and multimedia development. He created the Army Sports Radio Network, securing WABC-770 AM in New York City as the flagship station.

From 1997-2000 Waddell, a North Carolina native, was the Director of Athletics external operations at Appalachian State. His tenure was marked by the signing of a 100,000-watt WKBC-FM as the flagship radio for Mountaineer football and basketball. His 1999 football marketing theme “Rock Solid” spawned Kidd Brewer Stadium’s nickname “The Rock” that has been adopted as part of ASU tradition.

Waddell received his B.S. degree in Sport Management from Guilford College in 1991, where he was also a two-time letterwinner in football. He earned his M.S. degree in Sport Administration from the prestigious Ohio University graduate program.

Waddell began his career in athletics in broadcasting at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia, where he was also the Director of Sports Marketing for Charlottesville Broadcasting Corporation. He is an active member of the NACDA and is a founding member of the Cincinnati Sports Professionals Network.

Waddell and his wife, Heidi, have two children; Drew and Caroline.

Webb named Towson Assistant AD for compliance

Former NEC Assistant Commissioner Joins Towson Athletics Staff

TOWSON, Md. – Former Northeast Conference Assistant Commissioner Kelly Webb has been named as the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance at Towson University, it has been announced by Director of Athletics Mike Waddell.

In that role, she will handle all compliance services for the Tiger student-athletes.

“We are very excited to have Kelly join our staff,” said Tricia Turley Brandenburg, the Deputy Director of Athletics for Internal Operations at Towson. “She brings a tremendous amount of experience to Towson, especially with providing rules interpretations and with the NCAA governance process. Her work at the NEC and A10 conference offices will be very beneficial to us. Kelly is a great addition to our staff.”

A native of Rancho Cucamonga, Cal, Webb served as the assistant commissioner at the NEC for the last year. She began her association with the conference in 2010 when she was named as the director of compliance. In her position at the NEC, she provided compliance services for all 12 members of the league. She also administered the NEC academic awards programs and various conference grants. In addition, she was responsible for educating the NEC membership on proposed NCAA legislation and Presidential Working Group changes.

Prior to joining the NEC staff, she was the assistant director of compliance for the Atlantic-10 Conference for two years. In that role, she was responsible for compliance services for 14 member institutions and issued interpretations, rules education, waiver processing and the National Letter of Intent program. She was also the primary liaison to the A-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Her first full-time position was with the West Coast Conference in 2006, spending one year as a Compliance Assistant.

A 2004 graduate of the University of California, Riverside, she started her career in athletics in 2004 when she spent a year as a media relations intern at her alma mater.

After earning her M.B.A. degree with a specialization in sports business management from San Diego State in 2006, she joined the Western Athletic Conference staff as an intern. In her role as an intern with the WAC, she gained experience in championships and compliance. As the WAC’s championship intern, she developed championship publications and acted as a direct managerial contact to coaches and staff at WAC Championships. She also worked with the WAC’s compliance staff and processed National Letters of Intent while administering hardship waivers.

Webb was recently appointed to the NCAA Division I Amateurism Fact-Finding Committee. She has also been a member of the NACWAA Membership Committee since 2011.

She began her duties at Towson University on April 15.

Evans named Towson Senior Associate AD

CARL EVANS NAMED AS SENIOR ASSOCIATE A.D. AT TOWSON

Former Memphis Administrator To Serve As Tigers’ Chief Development Officer

TOWSON, Md. – University of Memphis Assistant Athletics Director Carl Evans has been named as the Senior Associate Athletics Director and Chief Development Officer at Towson University, it has been announced by Director of Athletics Mike Waddell.

His main responsibilities will include oversight of the Tiger Scholarship Fund staff and fundraising activities while personally focusing on securing major gifts for the Towson athletics department.

“Carl has a passion for development and for being here at Towson,” says Waddell.  “During almost seven years at Memphis, he was promoted twice within the organization.  His major gifts experience over the most recent fundraising year included two gifts of more than $500,000 with unrestricted giving going up 46% under his leadership.  He has experience on all levels of the fundraising ladder and will bring a great deal of enthusiasm, structure, and an enhanced sense of accountability to our Tiger Club operation.”

A native of Ramah, New Mexico, he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Weber State University. During his years at Weber State, he was a wide receiver for the Wildcats’ football team.

He began his career in development at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2004. He worked on the Rebel Athletic Fund from January of 2004 through October of 2006. During his time at UNLV, annual support for the Rebel Athletic Fund increased by 21 percent.

In November of 2006, he joined the staff at the University of Memphis as the Assistant Director of the Athletics Development. In 2009, he was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director for Development at Memphis.

At Memphis, he was instrumental in securing a $2.6 million gift, the largest gift ever to women’s athletics at Memphis.

During his years at Memphis, he helped the program raise more than $80 million.

Evans, who earned his Master’s degree in Athletics Development from UNLV, started his duties at Towson on April 8.

He and his wife, Starla, are the parents of three daughters.

Towson extends deal with Under Armour

TOWSON ATHLETICS ANNOUNCES CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH UNDER ARMOUR

Tigers to be Fitted in Under Armour Apparel and Footwear Through 2017-18 Academic Year

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Towson University Department of Athletics has announced it has extended its relationship with Under Armour, Inc., a Baltimore-based leader in innovative performance apparel, footwear, equipment, and accessories, to provide on-field apparel, accessories, equipment, and footwear for all Tiger athletics programs through the 2017-18 academic year. The extension adds five years to the original four-year agreement that was signed in 2009.

Towson gives AD Waddell contract extension

Third-year Administrator Will Guide Tiger Athletics Through, October, 2014

TOWSON, Md. –
 Towson University President Maravene Loeschke announced today that Director of Athletics Mike Waddell has received a one-year contract extension. Waddell, whose contract now runs to October 2014, was named TU’s eighth athletics director on Sept. 29, 2010.

“Mike Waddell has made a great deal of progress in setting a new vision for Towson University Athletics in just two years,” said Dr. Loeschke. “I look forward to his continued work to strengthen the competitive success of our student athletes while keeping a strong focus on academics.”

The 2012-13 academic year is Waddell’s third overseeing Towson Athletics, its 20 sports programs and over 600 student-athletes, coaches and staff.

Since arriving on campus, Waddell has been visible on campus and in the community while developing a motto within the program of “EXPECT SUCCESS.”

In the classroom, 11 teams have shown improvement in their cumulative G.P.A. from the previous fall and the overall department G.P.A. has climbed to a 3.07 average. Overall, 56 percent (272-of-485) of the Towson student-athletes posted a G.P.A. above 3.0 in 2011-12, while 125 made the Dean’s List with a G.P.A. of 3.5 or above. 

For Towson, success on the playing in 2011-12 was highlighted by a pair of Colonial Athletic Association championships. The nationally-ranked football team and the nationally-ranked women’s lacrosse team both won CAA titles and advanced to NCAA post-season competition.

The football Tigers’ turnaround from 1-10 in 2010 to 9-3 in 2011 catapulted the team into the NCAA Playoffs for the first time at the FCS level and garnered head coach Rob Ambrose National Coach of the Year accolades and freshman running back Terrance West the Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the nation.

The women’s lacrosse team championships in both the regular season and the CAA Tournament earned head coach Sonia LaMonica CAA Coach of the Year honors. The Tigers returned to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time since 2005 and put themselves in position to host the first home NCAA Tournament games in program history.

The two championships are the third and fourth won during Waddell’s tenure at Towson. In addition to Ambrose’s and LaMonica’s Coach of the Year accolades, head gymnastics coach Vicky Chliszczyk and head volleyball coach Bruce Atkinson also earned league coaching honors. In addition, gymnast Katy Catanzaro and volleyball outside hitter Katy Buckwere named as conference Players of the Year.

The success on the field has also translated into ticket sales and fund-raising improvements for the Tigers in 2011-12 as they broke records for: Tiger Club donors and money raised in a single-year; season football attendance (62,645), single-game football attendance (11,196 – first sellout in program history vs. Lehigh in NCAA Playoffs), season student football attendance (17,597) and single-game student football attendance (4,036). Even after setting a school record for football season ticket holders in 2011, season tickets have increased by more than 133 percent for the 2012 season to over 1,000 season ticket holders.

Prior to coming to Towson, Waddell was the Senior Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Cincinnati (2006-10) where his external efforts helped the resurgence of the Bearcats Athletics programs.

Before that, he served as the Interim Director and Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Akron (2001-2006), the Director of Marketing and Broadcasting at the United States Military Academy (2000-01), and Director of Athletics External Operations at Appalachian State University (1997-2000).

Before embarking on his career as an athletics administrator, Waddell spent time working with the University of North Carolina and the University of Virginia radio networks as an on-air personality, play-by-play announcer, game day host and engineer.

Waddell received his B.S. degree in Sport Management from Guilford College in 1991, where he was a two-time letter winner in football.  He earned his M.S. degree in Sport Administration from the prestigious Ohio University graduate program.
