Huevos! Maryland’s Vasquez Named WNST Local Sports Person of the Year

Posted on 23 December 2010 by Glenn Clark

Had it simply been based on accolades, Greivis Vasquez would have won WNST’s 2010 Local Sports Person of the Year award going away.

In 2010, the former Maryland Terrapins guard was named first-team All-ACC, second-team All-American, ACC Player of the Year, and the Bob Cousy Award winner — given to the nation’s top point guard. He also helped the Terps clinch a share of the ACC regular season title. When the Memphis Grizzlies selected him with the 28th pick of the NBA Draft in June, Vasquez became the first Terrapin selected in the first round of the NBA Draft since Chris Wilcox and Juan Dixon were picked in 2002.

In terms of on-field (on in this case on-court) accomplishments, no athlete in the state of Maryland reached the heights that the “Vivacious Venezuelan” did in 2010. As Jason Jubb (WNST.net contributor and former “Sunday Morning Blitz” co-host) said, Vasquez “took over this year.”

However, Vasquez’s selection was about more than just on-court ability. There was something about watching Vasquez play in 2010 that made fans in Baltimore and throughout the state heap adoration at a level not seen since Dixon’s graduation.

Sometimes a picture explains just about everything.

It was the passion displayed by Vasquez when he stepped foot on a basketball court that made fans fall in love.

WNST’s Ryan Chell said Vasquez in 2010 was “hated by every other ACC fan and adored by the Terps nation. He put the team on his shoulders.”

Never was it more evident than in the game pictured above.

On March 3, Maryland defeated then No. 4 Duke, 79-72. It was Senior Night at Comcast Center, and Vasquez’s final game was one of the more passionate displays in recent college basketball history.

Vasquez led the way for Maryland with 20 points and 5 assists in the victory, but it was one particular shot that was a total display of “huevos” (a term first labeled by ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt) in the final seconds.

With Maryland clinging to a 71-69 advantage over the Blue Devils in the final minute, there was no question Vasquez would take the shot. And despite the shot being an off-balanced, running 12-footer that looked more like a heave than an actual basketball shot, there was really no question whether or not the shot would go in…even if it had to find every piece of the rim before it would fall.

It wasn’t only the Duke game that stood out in 2010 for the young man from Caracas. In fact, Vasquez’s shining moment may well have occurred just one game earlier.

The Terrapins traveled to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech February 27. The game was delayed more than three hours due to a water main break outside Cassell Coliseum. Maybe the anticipation built during the delay made the nature of the performance even greater.

Vasquez posted 41 points, seven rebounds, and six assists en route to 104-100 win over the Hokies in two overtimes.

The two wins would ultimately be the difference for the Terps in sharing the ACC crown.

Watching Vasquez play in 2010 was special.

It’s unlikely that Vasquez could have won a 1-on-1 contest with some of the great all-around players in recent Maryland history. Vasquez’s game wasn’t nearly as polished as someone like Dixon, Steve Francis or even John Gilchrist.

Yet in terms of fortitude, only Dixon could match Vasquez. Vasquez cared deeply about representing the students, the University and the entire state.

“Every time I put on the jersey I did my best and cared about them,” said Vasquez after learning he had won the award. “Those four years at Maryland were a big part in my life, and I eventually want to raise my family around Maryland because it meant very much to me.”

It was the type of passion that rubbed off on everyone around him, including his teammates.

“He was a great teammate,” Maryland guard Adrian Bowie told WNST. “His passion was evident on and off the court. He loved us and we loved him.”

Perhaps that passion was no more evident than in his final act as a Terrapin, a devastating 85-83 defeat to Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Trailing by 16 late in the second half and seemingly limping out on a disappointing note, Vasquez took his team on his back a final time, scoring nine of Maryland’s 11 points in the final two minutes. His final basket with six seconds left to give the Terps a one-point lead looked to be another brilliant moment before the Spartans’ Korie Lucious broke the hearts of Terrapin Nation with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, ending Vasquez’s collegiate career and leaving fans wishing for one more chance to watch him.

“It’s a memory all Maryland fans want to forget, but his final game left you wanting more and epitomized what he meant to this program,” said WNST’s Luke Jones. “We throw around words like courage and heart all the time in the sports world, but his passion, his determination was authentic. In those final minutes when he nearly willed the Terps to victory when it seemed all but impossible, it summed him up perfectly. As disappointing as it was for the team, knowing Vasquez would never wear that uniform again was sobering. You didn’t want it to end.”

Vasquez truly was loved by fans both on campus in College Park and throughout the mid-Atlantic region. His talent as a basketball player was appreciated, but his incredible passion made watching him play a joyous experience for Terps fans.

For as much joy as Maryland fans (and WNST contributors) took from watching Vasquez on the court, Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams told WNST he took equally as much joy from coaching him.

“If you pay a lot of money for a ticket, I think you want that guy that you paid the money to see to really work as hard as (in your mind) you would if you were a player,” said Williams after learning Vasquez had won the honor. “And that’s what Greivis gave all those people that bought the tickets. He gave them that player that played they way they would play if they got the chance.”

“I’ve always felt a big part of college basketball is the passion in the game,” added Williams. “I talk to pro players that have played here, played other places, and they really miss that passion that you get at college basketball in big games. Greivis was a part of that. He was nationally known as one of those guys.”

In a fitting twist, the brilliant performance of Vasquez in 2010 came after what would have to be considered the last “low” moment in what had previously been a roller-coaster career.

On Dec. 30, 2009, Vasquez pulled up but missed an important three point shot in transition in the second half of Maryland’s 83-77 loss to William & Mary at Comcast Center. Trailing by seven points, the miss turned into a five-point swing in favor of the Tribe as they would go on to upset the Terps.

The tone for Vasquez in 2010 was set that night. Not by the miss, but by the support shown by Williams despite the crucial miss (and poor decision). When asked about the shot after the game, Williams responded:

“Greivis has won a lot of games for us pulling up for threes. He didn’t make that one. Sure, he missed it, so I wish he would have driven the ball. But if he would have driven the ball and gotten his shot blocked, I’d wished he would have taken the three. It’s the way it works. I want Greivis to keep playing like he’s playing. He’s working hard, he’s trying to help us win. As long as he does that-I’ve had a lot of great players here that take shots once in a while that take shots that you might not like as a coach but that’s part of what makes them great. They have that aggressiveness, they have that no fear of being out there playing which you try to put into a lot of players, but not everybody has that.”

With that support, Vasquez never looked back in 2010.

“I can’t say enough about coach,” Vasquez told WNST. “I think he made a big impact not only in my game but in my life. He mean so much to me not only as my coach, but as a father and a friend, everything I needed. He’s more than a good friend, he’s a mentor. That’s why he’s successful and wins championships and went to the Final Four. I can’t say enough about coach Williams and he will be a special person to me for the rest of my life.”

Vasquez’s personality wasn’t left on the floor. He was as engaging on the campus in College Park and in the community as well.

“Greivis always had time for people,” Williams said. “Sometimes I’d have to get on him because he was trying to do too many things to please too many people. The time he read books in elementary school to kids in Spanish-in a lot of Spanish areas around here-nobody even knew about that stuff. He was just always willing to show up. If they had a shoot-a-thon to raise money for charity on campus, Greivis would come in and try to make one from half court. That’s just the way he was. He was just always willing to be like the other students, which they really appreciated.”

“Greivis had a passion for both basketball and for life that was infectious,” Maryland associate Athletic Director Doug Dull told WNST as well. “He had a confidence and a personality that was magical and unforgettable.”

Watching Greivis Vasquez play basketball in 2010 was a special feeling for Terrapins fans and even those who support other schools but live in the area and found themselves glued to Maryland games.

There were two voting qualifications for the Local Sports Person of the Year honor.

The first was that the person had to play for a professional, college or high school team in the state of Maryland OR represent the state of Maryland in an individual sport.

The second was that the honor was year-specific. The honoree had to be someone for whom 2010 stood out not only in comparison to other sports figures, but also to things they had accomplished themselves in other years.

D1scourse.com writer (and regular contributor to “The Morning Reaction” on AM1570 WNST in 2010) Patrick Stevens offered a very well thought out explanation as to why Vasquez best met both qualifications.

“Vasquez came to Maryland with maybe his biggest obstacle being the language barrier. That’s almost a bigger impediment for someone who sort of knows a second language and tries to fit in while learning on the fly than someone who just relies on a translator and stays in his comfort zone. The thing was, Vasquez was always supremely at ease on the court, where it was immensely easier for him to express himself than through his many, many words.”

Stevens added, “For as much as people latched onto Vasquez’s rhetoric throughout his college career, he was always better measured through his deeds. It didn’t matter if it was on the floor (a 41-point night at Virginia Tech or helping topple Duke in his last home game) or off (posing for picture after picture well after games ended or simple gestures like handing a pair of shoes to a security guard at the ACC Tournament). Vasquez was the most impactful University of Maryland athlete since Juan Dixon, and never more so than in 2010.”

Vasquez’s often hard-nosed head coach was emotional in summing up his feelings about his former star player.

“The person that he is…is really tremendous. I really miss him. Obviously, you miss his playing ability, but you miss him being around.”

He’s not the only one.

Not everyone likes country music. But I like country music. At least country music when Little Big Town is playing it…

Mike Ness is one of the toughest dudes on the face of the planet. I feel like not only could he play a gig with Social D in Charm City this weekend, but he could possibly play safety for the Ravens as well if Dawan Landry were to get hurt…

Some people think it isn’t very manly to be a fan of The Script. To those people I say, “why in the hell would you have thought I was manly otherwise?”

Drew Forrester and I are going to see Ra Ra Riot Friday night in DC. I’m planning on telling everyone that my grandfather actually does have fairly decent taste in music.

9. World Championship Punkin Chunkin (Friday-Sunday Nassau, Delaware)

This is certainly outside the radius of what I would usually consider “local”, but it’s also awesome enough that I’m going to be forced to let it slide.

Seriously, how in the hell can you argue with an event like THIS?

8. Lingerie Football League: Orlando Fantasy @ Baltimore Charm (Friday 9pm 1st Mariner Arena)

I don’t consider myself an expert on the LFL by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel like it has to be somewhat disappointing that the Charm have been outscored 93-6 in their first two games of the year.

That being said, I still like it would be unfair to label the team as 0-2 for the season. Mostly because that would mean we’re labeling anyone involved with the LFL as losers…

lfl

7. Pro Wrestling: TNA “Turning Point” (Sunday 8pm from Orlando live on Pay-Per-View)

Mr. Anderson is facing Jeff Hardy at Turning Point for the strap. But that’s not what I’m most interested in. Instead, I’m much more interested in the match between the Motor City Machine Guns and Team 3D. Why? Because Team 3D is FREAKING AWESOME…

6. High School Football: Perry Hall @ Hereford (Friday 7pm), Glen Burnie @ Chesapeake-Anne Arundel County (Friday 6:30pm)

As always, my PHHS Gators are coming off a blowout win (56-15 over Milford Mill) and Forrester’s Gophers are coming off a blowout loss (44-6 to North County).

But Hereford is always a tricky trip for my Gators. Which bothers me, because there is no team I want to beat more than the Bulls every season.

Why’s that?

Picture a 14 year old Glenn Clark sitting in front of window at 6am…staring out at a thin layer of snow/ice and listening to Dave Durian on WBAL…

“Baltimore County Schools…two hours late…”

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DIDN’T DO ANY OF MY HOMEWORK LAST NIGHT AND I COULD REALLY USE ANOTHER 45 MINUTES OF SLEEP!!!!!!!

“…Hereford Zone only.”

WHAT?!?!?!?!? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So to my Gators…I don’t ask for much. But PLEASE. Win this for all of us who ever had to have our hearts broken by hearing the words “Hereford Zone only.”

Love, G.

5. NBA: Philadelphia 76ers @ Washington Wizards (Tuesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Washington Wizards @ New York Knicks (Friday 7:30pm from New York live on Comcast SportsNet PLUS), Cleveland Cavaliers @ Washington Wizards (Saturday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet)

Since the ‘Zards appear to stink again this year, thank God Ted Leonsis and company have a favorable schedule. I mean, not even two weeks into the season and they’re already getting a visit from LeBron James and the Cavs!

Oh. No? Well at least they have other good things going on in DC. For example…

grossman

Oh Thank God for Rex Grossman. He couldn’t happen to a better group of A-holes.

4. College Basketball: 2K Sports Classic-Seattle @ Maryland (Monday 8pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Shepherd @ Loyola (Thursday 7pm Reitz Arena); Women’s College Basketball: Gallaudet @ Maryland (Tuesday 7pm Comcast Center), District of Columbia @ Maryland (Sunday 2pm Comcast Center)

Oh College Basketball how I love thee and how much I have missed thee.

Seriously-there are few things in life that I love HALF as much as I love College Basketball.

Off the top of my head, I’d say I love O.A.R., Chris Farley movies and Belgian Wheat beers as much as I love College Basketball. Nothing else.

Well….maybe this…

3. College Football: Maryland @ Miami (Saturday 12pm from Miami live on ESPNU), Navy @ East Carolina (Saturday 3:30pm from Greenville, NC live on MASN)

Okay, I REALLY don’t think the Terrapins are that good.

I know they’re 6-2. I know they’re now 3-1 in the ACC. I know they just hung 62 points on Wake Forest. I know there’s a chance Jacory Harris might not play for the Hurricanes Saturday, and the ‘Canes just lost a game to effing Virginia ANYWAY.

I’m just still not convinced Ralph Friedgen’s Terps are THAT good. But I’ve been wrong before.

For example, I was told recently that there were some new pictures of a gal named Jarah Mariano that deserved a gander. My response was “I bet they’re not that great.”

I was wrong. (Thanks Guyism!)

2. Horse Racing: Breeders’ Cup (Friday 4pm live on ESPN2, Saturday 1:30pm live on ABC, Saturday 3:30pm live on ESPN. All racing from Louisville, KY)

I can’t believe I’m missing this.

There is NOTHING better than a big racing weekend at Churchill Downs.

Of course, I’m not so sure it’ll be quite the same without the Prince of Kentucky…

1. NFL: Miami Dolphins @ Baltimore Ravens (Sunday 1pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on CBS)

It’s not that I’m NOT excited about the Ravens and Fins Sunday afternoon. Trust me, I’m PLENTY excited about it. It’s just that it’s hard to think about ANYTHING going on at “The Bank” right now as being even in the neighborhood of the importance of what will be going on there come June 22, 2011…

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 29 July 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because the Bowie Baysox are celebrating “The Dude” tonight at Prince George’s Stadium. And I’m sure all other “Big Lebowski” fans are with me in thinking “Who better to celebrate???” (Edit from GMC: Video VERY MUCH NSFW.)

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Terrence Cody passed conditioning test, returned to Ravens practice

Like I said yesterday, “thank God our long civic nightmare is over.”

I’m not particularly worked up about a failed conditioning test. I am a BIT more worked up about the thought that we’ll have to worry about Terrence Cody’s weight/condition for the next few years.

I’m sure there are others (John Harbaugh comes to mind) that are even more concerned about it. Having Haloti Ngata give him a nickname like “Cheeseburger” doesn’t exactly bode well. Of course, it’s not like they didn’t know what they were getting when they picked him in the 2nd round of the NFL Draft. It’s also not like the nickname doesn’t fit.

If I was more of a comedian, I’d have a better “hopefully he’ll be our Cheeseburger in Paradise” Jimmy Buffett-type joke to use here. Instead, I’ll opt to offer a picture of the Boston Blackie Burger from Blackie’s in Chicago-a spot I visited for the first time in my life on the 4th of July. It’s a winner…

2. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Texas coach Mack Brown believes Sergio Kindle may have fallen due to narcolepsy

Which could VERY WELL be a legitimate reason.

There were reports around the time of the NFL Draft that Kindle may suffer from narcolepsy and ADD, and had fallen asleep during meetings while he was with the Longhorns. We hadn’t necessarily heard that sleepwalking was an issue; but there is certainly at least a CHANCE it’s true.

If so, it’s probably a less concerning explanation than some other potential explanations that had been thrown around. We won’t know what REALLY happened until Sergio Kindle is able to talk to the media-and even then there will be some who will still wonder exactly what happened last week in Austin.

3. BaltimoreRavens.com’s Mike Duffy says Jared Gaither reported to Training Camp ‘on time’ Wednesday, Terrell Suggs reported ‘slimmer’

I understand that they’re going to say the right thing here; but John Harbaugh said on Monday in the lobby of the Westminster Best Western that he was “looking forward to seeing (Gaither) today.”

Maybe the team didn’t require Gaither to report to Camp early because of his foot injury, but Coach Harbs certainly suggested that he was expecting to see Jared on Monday. Could be a simple miscommunication, could be that the head coach wanted Jared in earlier in the week because he missed OTA’s and is expected to play a different position this year.

The reality is that it doesn’t really matter. Gaither’s in Camp, and as long as he’s on the practice field tomorrow-everything is fine. If he’s still battling the foot problem tomorrow, there will be one more recent drama the team will be dealing with.

You know, because they needed another distraction. Remember when they were having a fairly quiet offseason???

As far as “T-Sizzle” is concerned, it will be interesting to see what he looks like on the practice field as well. As far as defensive improvement is concerned, it is clear that all of it surrounds what type of season Suggs has, especially considering the help that was supposed to come on the pass rush from Sergio Kindle now may well not be there.

4. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Ed Reed spouted off about Baltimore media on Cleveland radio station

I’m finding it hard to find much of anything else to say about Ed Reed right now. He can be as mad as he wants to be at Mike Preston or anyone else in the Baltimore media; but everyone heard his comments-and no one forced a microphone in front of his face in any of his radio interviews; including the first one he did July 2 with us that started this ball rolling.

I’ll leave it alone for now.

The Ravens are off today as they hold an “administrative day” with veterans now in the house. They’ll put the pads on and his the field at McDaniel College for the first full team practice of camp tomorrow morning at 8:45. Luke Jones will keep you updated at the bottom of every hour with Drew Forrester, Thyrl Nelson and Nestor Aparicio.

5. The AP says Brad Mills shut down Orioles in 5-0 win for Blue Jays at Rogers Centre

Remember when Forrester bet me that the Birds would win AND cover 2.5?

I hope lunch is at PF Chang’s.

If I was surprised that a pitcher making his only start before being sent back down to the minors baffled the O’s, I’d tell you. The thing is…I’m not surprised by it at all.

How could I be?

The Orioles are the absolute worst team in baseball, and one of the worst teams in the history of baseball. How could I be surprised by any of this?!?!?

0-12 against Toronto this season. 31-70 for the season. I can’t make these type of numbers up.

6. The AP/WNST.net offer numerical evidence of loss

Jeremy Guthrie was actually pretty good last night. It probably won’t make you feel much better, but it happened. I’d like to think that it would improve his value at the Trade Deadline, but I saw what the Arizona Diamondbacks got for Dan Haren. Dan Haren is better than Jeremy Guthrie. The market just isn’t in the Orioles’ favor.

Despite Guthrie, you don’t want to look at the numbers-which include a combined 0-8 with 2 K’s and 5 LOB from Luke Scott and Adam Jones. Instead, look at Cameron Russell from Guyism. We’ll re-group after that…

cameronr

7. MLB.com’s James Hall says Juan Samuel will stick with Bergesen, rest of rotation this time through

Which means you’ll have to wait to see Zach Britton; not that you would have necessarily canceled your Saturday night plans to see him pitch anyway.

Clearly the Birds are hoping their roster decisions will be made for them with the trade deadline. Should they figure out a way to deal Guthrie (or Kevin Millwood), they could bring up Britton (or Chris Tillman) to replace them in the rotation. Should they deal Will Ohman or Mark Hendrickson, they could move Bergesen into the bullpen and move one of the others back into the rotation.

The problem with all of this is that I’m not even sure Andy MacPhail is going to be able to trade ANYONE. Guthrie is the best chip, but this is a year where the pitching market is top-heavy (Cliff Lee and Dan Haren already dealt, Roy Oswalt available); meaning the value for the secondary market is lessened. There have been years where Jeff Suppan and/or Sidney Ponson were the best pitchers available. If this was that type of the year, the market for Guthrie would be better.

The Birds will be lucky to get ANYTHING for Millwood; and the rest of their chips (Ty Wigginton, Miguel Tejada, Julio Lugo, Cesar Izturis, Ohman, Hendrickson) aren’t going to get them much more than a B-level prospect or player to be named at best.

The only real hope they have to get something is Luke Scott, who despite a tough night last night has been hot recently. The Orioles aren’t going to get a lot for him, but they might be able to get SOMETHING-which is more than they could get for much of anyone else.

8. The Sun’s Dean Jones Jr. says Josh Bell, Nolan Reimold homered in Norfolk Tides’ win on farm

Before we move on from the on-field Orioles, a couple of things.

-The O’s head to Kansas City to face the Royals tonight; with Brian Matusz going against Kyle Davies. First pitch from Kauffman Stadium is on MASN at 8:10pm. There’s no reason the Orioles couldn’t win this game…but I’ll pick KC. Sean O’Sullivan, Zack Greinke and the great Bruce Chen are scheduled to finish the weekend against Jake Arrieta, Bergesen and Millwood. With a mircale, they’ll split.

-Soren Petro from 810 WHB in Kansas City joined Drew this morning on “The Morning Reaction” to preview the Royals series. If you missed it, make sure you head over to the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault here at WNST.net to check it out. Other guests included:

 • Jerry Crasnick (ESPN.com)-who discussed the trade deadline, as well as surprising teams in baseball
 • Jason La Canfora (NFL Network)-who discussed Terrell Owens, the AFC North, Dez Bryant and more
 • John Perrotto (Baseball Prospectus)-who went around the world of baseball

It’s all up in the BuyAToyota.com Audio Vault as well.

9. Fanhouse’s Greg Couch says former O’s 1B Jim Gentile finally credited with winning 1961 RBI title

Which you would know if you heard my “Cheap Shots From The Bleachers” segment this morning on AM1570 WNST. It’s in the Audio Vault if you missed it.

Apparently Lee MacPhail had told Gentile that he would have gotten $5,000 more if he had won the RBI title-which Greg Couch thinks Andy MacPhail should offer to pay him as a kind gesture. I wouldn’t hold my breath.

As a kind gesture from myself to Jim Gentile, I will offer pictures of Daniela Freitas. (Thanks Busted Coverage/Totally Crap!)

10. UMTerps.com says WR/Specialist Torrey Smith, LB Alex Wujciak named All-ACC

Technically they have THREE all-conference selections, as Torrey Smith was named as both a receiver AND specialist. As I was reminded yesterday-Virginia Tech only had ONE all-conference selection (Ryan Williams), so take that Hokies!

The problem is that beyond these two, this Terrapins team has as many question marks as my Chapel Hill Elementary School 2nd grade English class. Of course, I rarely paid attention in my 2nd grade English class-as I spent more time paying attention to my “girlfriend” Michelle Hensley. Anyone know how she’s doing?

The joke I missed here was that Maryland only had two more wins than Chapel Hill last year. Damn! Sorry everyone…

11. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Maryland to play William & Mary (in football) again in 2012

I remind you that it’s “in football” because it isn’t surprising to see the Tribe come back to Byrd Stadium. Now if Gary Williams were to invite them back to Comcast Center after what happened last year, I’d be absolutely stunned. In fact, I’m a little surprised Gary doesn’t have a “no-fly” zone for W&M over College Park entirely.

Maryland regularly plays one FCS (former 1AA) per year; and they have Morgan State this year, Towson next year, and Rhode Island in 2013. This year’s other non-conference games are Navy, West Virginia and Eastern Michigan; next year’s are Notre Dame, West Virginia and (I believe) Temple.

12. Sports Network’s Craig Haley says Towson picked last in CAA

I stopped by CAA Media Day yesterday, and I have to admit that the oatmeal raisin cookies and potato chips at M&T Bank Stadium were DELICIOUS.

It’s hard to pick Rob Ambrose’s Tigers anything BUT last considering the year they’re coming off and the strength of the CAA; so I doubt they’re particularly disappointed.

As a consolation prize, I offer a photo of Katherine Jenkins. (Thanks Don Chavez!)

kjenkins

And finally, I leave you with this.

I know I already named a “Greatest Song of All Time This Week” this week (“Cornbread” by Dave Matthews Band), but I’m sure there’s been a week where I forgot to name one; so I’m naming another. Hey, it’s my blog. Enjoy “Shutterbug” by Big Boi from Outkast…

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 17 March 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because…..well……it’s St. Patrick’s Day. I’m not Irish, and I’ll never be the type to say “I’m Irish for today” or anything like that. BUT, I enjoy Bangers & Mash, Smithwick’s AND Flogging Molly…..

If you’re interested in coming out and buying me my first 6-72 beers tonight, let me know.

Let’s see what everyone has to say…

1. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Gary Williams, Greivis Vasquez making ‘final run’ together

Trying to spare any sort of poetic statement, this is going to be a special run for this combination of coach and player.

Vasquez is not only the best player Gary Williams has had since Juan Dixon, it’s the best relationship he’s had with a player since Juan Dixon. Juan was famously known for being willing to hurl things right back at Williams, including language that would make some of us blush.

This type of story makes sense, as every time out might be the last time this coach and player share the floor together. There’s no doubt in my mind that the coach isn’t particularly interested in thinking about the first game he’ll play AFTER the player moves on.

2. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Vasquez coming into NCAA Tournament off ‘rare’ bad night in Greensboro

Of course, seeing as how THIS is the most exciting thing to do in Greensboro….

tiddlywinks
…isn’t EVERY night in Greensboro a bad night?

Now, with that being said…there is a question about whether or not Vasquez has reached an emotional high point with the win at Duke and the ACC regular season title split, or if he has another level he can reach over the next week(s).

That being said, even reaching “another level” might not guarantee victory for the Terps-as the competition won’t be easy.

3. Triangle Business Journal’s Jeff Drew says Maryland amongst most popular basketball teams in country

WHAT???

I would have assumed this team would have been higher on the list….

ucla

Seriously though, do you really think the Terps are the 4th most popular college basketball team in the country? North Carolina and Duke make sense at the top of the list, but I would assume Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and UConn would be next on the list.

I guess it’s cool, as it means this Terrapins team has made some traction nationally. But I can’t help but wonder just how realistic the numbers are.

4. The Sun’s Jeff Barker says Maryland, Morgan State fans having tough time arranging for trips to see teams in NCAA Tournament

It IS a shame. Morgan’s trip to Buffalo isn’t terrible-and seeing as how their tickets sold out, clearly there are plenty of Bears fans who have decided that they’re ready to make the trip.

Spokane is just unfortunate.

Obviously, SOMEONE has to go play out west. Of course, playing in a bigger city with more flight options might help to limit the damage. I am absolutely NOT a fan of the NCAA playing Tournament games in places like Spokane, Boise, and other less than desirable cities.

I mean, what’s wrong with playing like nice places like Miami, San Diego, New Orleans and Baltimore*?

(*indicates one of these places clearly doesn’t belong)

5. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says Towson confirms Pat Kennedy will return as head coach next season

My first reaction to this is “obviously Towson is saying that winning really doesn’t matter to them.”

My second reaction is only slightly more positive; “Towson is clearly saying that money is such a mess that they can’t really be too concerned about basketball.”

Look, I think Pat Kennedy is a better coach than a lot of guys who could have jobs. That being said, it isn’t working at Towson. They won some games down the stretch, including 5 of their last 8 regular season games and 6 of their last 10 including the CAA Tournament. That stretch included a win at William & Mary, which helped to knock the Tribe off the at-large bubble.

BUT….in a perfect world, I would imagine the athletic department there would try to use a coaching search and hire to pump some new life into a program that admittedly does have a few good pieces in place.

6. Inside Lacrosse says Chris Pastirik scored with 6 seconds left to help Towson beat Navy for first win of season

It was a nice night for lacrosse at Unitas Stadium, and a big win for Tony Seaman and the Tigers, who were in real danger of getting off to an 0-5 start with a showdown looming against Virginia on Saturday.

Unfortunately, Navy is in a BIT of trouble-as they have now fallen to 3-4. They play Holy Cross in Annapolis Saturday and then travel to Colgate a week later; but their stretch after that is brutal. Before the Patriot League Tournament, they play Georgetown, at Maryland, Army at M&T Bank Stadium, and Johns Hopkins. Yikes.

If you’re interested in seeing some lacrosse this afternoon before starting your St. Patty’s festivities, head over to Owings Mills to Stevenson host Stevens (yeah, you read that right) at 4pm at the Caves Athletic Complex.

7. National Football Post’s Aaron Wilson says Dwan Edwards agreed to 4 year deal with Bills

4 years, $18 million

Must be nice.

Meanwhile, this will be my lunch today…..

ramen

(Edit from GMC: That’s not because I’m poor, it’s because I LOVE Pork flavored Ramen noodles.)

In all seriousness, the Ravens will miss Dwan Edwards. He had found himself a nice spot playing on obvious running downs while Trevor Pryce rotated in for obvious passing downs.

With Edwards and Justin Bannan gone, D-Line becomes an even more important spot for the Ravens to try to upgrade in the NFL Draft. Also, expect Brandon McKinney, Kelly Talavou and maybe even Lamar Divens to be in the mix. There might even be another guy….

8. Baltimore Ravens Official Site’s Mike Duffy says Paul Kruger ‘bulking up’ for chance to move from LB to DE

Look at that! Another guy!

If Paul Kruger is going to be a Defensive End in the NFL, he obviously WILL have to bulk up. He’ll need to look a bit more like Kyle Vanden Bosch….

vandenbosch

….than “Sunshine” from “Remember the Titans”…..

titans

9. Bowling Green News says Ravens were in attendance for Falcons’ Pro Day to see players like WR Freddie Barnes

This comes after the Ravens had previously attended Youngstown State Pro Day to watch WR Donald Jones.

Does it mean the Ravens are no longer interested in taking a receiver in Round 1 and are instead focusing on receivers in mid-rounds and later rounds? Not necessarily.

In fact, had Demaryius Thomas been able to work out at Georgia Tech Pro Day-I would assume that the Ravens would have been particularly interested.

BUT-my GUESS remains that the Ravens will go Tight End or defense in Round 1, then address Wide Receiver later in the Draft.

Just a guess.

10. MLB.com’s Kelly Thesier says Chad Moeller homered as Orioles topped Twins

Told you the Birds had a catcher for the future!!!

By the way-break up the O’s! 3 straight wins! A reminder-the World Series is in October, you’ll want to put aside money now to make sure you guarantee a seat.

(Edit from GMC: I’m kidding. I’m actually really happy they’ve won 3 in a row-but I wish it was Kevin Millwood making a strong start, not David Hernandez.)

11. Carroll County Times’ Rich Dubroff says Steve Johnson returned to Birds from Giants

Which means Dave Johnson has been crying for some 18 hours.

The organization expected Johnson to be back, so this isn’t much of a surprise, honestly.

But if the city of Baltimore was going to take someone from Northern California, why couldn’t it have been Allison Stokke??? (Left, thanks Busted Coverage)

stokke

12. Daily Racing Form’s Joe DeVivo says Pimlico Special, duPont Distaff cut from Pimlico season

So…..does this mean we get booze back at Preakness, or what?

And finally, I leave you with this.

After posting the Stone Cold Steve Austin beer truck video yesterday, I had multiple requests for the Kurt Angle milk truck video. Quite possibly the greatest thing WWE ever did…..

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Thursday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 25 February 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Thursday!

It’s a Happy Thursday for me because Intern Super Jack said to me yesterday before we left the studios at 1550 Hart Rd. “Did you see the Vince Carter shot?”

Somehow, I had not. Now everyone will….

I feel like if I tried long enough, I could throw the ball from that some spot and….get it to the opposite free throw line? Maybe?

Maybe not.

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Terps fought back from 15 points down to beat Clemson at Comcast Center

In a word, “gutty.”

What was interesting about last night’s game was that despite falling behind by 15, I never got the sense that the crowd in College Park (or those of us there covering the game) thought that the Terrapins were out of it-despite the struggles (related to a stomach bug) that Greivis Vasquez was going through, scoring just 2 points in the first half.

Of course, Greivis Vasquez found other ways to contribute (Thanks Mr. Irrelevant!)….

vasquez

2. The Diamondback’s Greg Schimmel says Terps figuring out new ways to win games every time out

Which is the mark of a team that is built on senior leadership even if not overwhelming talent. I think it’s also the mark of good coaching, but then again-I’m just a Gary Williams apologist, right?

Maryland will have to keep figuring out new ways to win games down the stretch and into both the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. It might not be Cliff Tucker hitting a miraculous shot or Sean Mosley coming to life-it might be a game where Landon Milbourne has to go off for 28 points. It might be a game where James Padgett has to play 25 minutes due to foul trouble for Jordan Williams and Dino Gregory.

Just count on Maryland needing to find new ways to win the rest of the way.

3. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Sean Mosley’s slump over with 20 point output in win over Tigers

Nothing makes me happier than when the idiots who say “Maryland is a DC school” have to watch a Baltimore kid (St. Frances) lead the way for the Terps. I guess as a reporter/columnist I’m not supposed to root for individual players, but no one has EVER accused me of being either “ethical” or “good”, so why should I start now?

Maryland returns to action Saturday at Virginia Tech (4pm-Raycom Sports-WNUV 54 locally), which sets up the Catholic League showdown between Mosley and the Hokies’ Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic), who was somehow left off the Naismith Award candidates list yesterday (Greivis Vasquez remained on the list) despite the fact that he is a legitimate candidate for ACC Player of the Year.

And how the hell did Virginia Tech get worked at Boston College last night? I’m not sure if that means the Eagles exposed Va Tech as pretenders, or if Seth Greenberg’s team will be especially amped to prove themselves Saturday in Blacksburg.

4. CSN Washington’s Chris Knoche says win ‘went a long way’ to ensuring Terps first round bye in ACC Tournament

With a win Saturday at Cassell Coliseum, Maryland will clinch that off day in Greensboro. That’s good news for me, as I only got my hotel room for Friday and Saturday night-and I’m not sure the WNST expense account can cover another night at the Hilton. I of course only stay at the Hilton, as I am a VERY big deal.

Getting a first round bye is a big deal, too. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to win 4 games in 4 days in an event like the ACC Tournament (although I believe Syracuse did it in the Big East Tournament recently), but with a first round bye the Terps would have to be considered a favorite to at least REACH the ACC Championship Game, where they might end up with a rematch of that 2004 Title Game…..

5. The AP says Chris De La Rosa scored 23 as UMBC blew out New Hampshire on road

Well, don’t I feel dumb….

Congratulations to Randy Monroe and the Retrievers, as this was a great win for them last night. I’m not sure it means they can advance at all in the America East Tournament, but they’ll at least have some confidence. They’re off this weekend before getting things underway in Hartford next week.

6. Towson Official Site says Tigers stunned William & Mary in CAA action in Williamsburg

Once again…..I feel dumb.

A great win for Pat Kennedy’s Tigers, they now have a date with Delaware Saturday at Towson Center before they head to Richmond for the CAA Tournament.

Of course, this is a “good news bad news” situation for CAA fans in the area, as they got a stunning win from Towson last night-but the Tribe loss means they are COMPLETELY out of the discussion for an at large berth come Selection Sunday. If Old Dominion wins the Tournament, that will be a 1 bid league.

7. Maryland Official Site previews womens basketball’s visit to Boston College tonight

And as I’ve said before, Brenda Frese’s team absolutely MUST win out for any shot at an NCAA Tournament at large bid, and they’ll probably still need to make some noise in the ACC Tournament. The Terps were 72-65 winners when the teams first met, but BC has played MUCH better basketball since then, including wins over Duke and North Carolina. This will be tough for the Terps in Chestnut Hill…

8. Navy Official Site previews tonight’s lacrosse showdown in Annapolis with North Carolina on CBS College Sports

Some great lax action tonight at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, as the Midshipmen are trying to bounce back from their loss to Loyola Saturday against a Tar Heels team that has won their first 3 to open the season.

UNC of course has a bit of an unfair advantage due to this…..

nc

I bet she’s been watching a lot of the Olympics…

9. The Towerlight’s Kevin Hess says bill forcing Maryland to play Towson, Morgan State in football ‘unlikely to pass’ thanks to lack of support from Mike Hermann

Good for Mike Hermann. Not only is it silly for a government official to try to influence college football scheduling, but he deserves to be called out for the silliness. Maryland has both Morgan State and Towson on the schedule in the next 4 years, and they want to keep scheduling them (as well as Navy) for regional purposes. They also want to schedule West Virginia, Pitt, Rutgers, Villanova, Delaware, William & Mary and other teams in the region that they might be going up against for recruits.

No team should be pigeon-holed into HAVING to play certain schools. On the flip side, Towson and Morgan shouldn’t be FORCED to play Maryland either. Morgan can get more money from a trip to Rutgers than a trip to Maryland, and since the entire University system gets funding from Maryland athletics, all of the programs are actually making money no matter WHO Maryland plays.

And for Mike Hermann, should Rob Ambrose turn things around in the next couple years for the Tigers-they shouldn’t be forced to have to schedule a Maryland team (that we assume) would be an almost impossible victory every year-last season not withstanding. If the Tigers would prefer to play a D1 team they might have a better chance at beating (say….Kent State?), they should be able to do that.

10. The Sun’s Peter Schmuck says Chris Tillman had ‘very positive’ bullpen session yesterday

Which is a good sign. If Tillman is going to lock up the 5th spot in the rotation instead of heading back to Norfolk, he has to be able to actually pitch in Sarasota.

Of course, the next step is to pitch well. Hopefully that’s coming.

11. SI’s Jon Heyman says Orioles skipper Dave Trembley ‘on hot seat’

That’s obvious. Fair or not, the O’s HAVE to improve in the win-loss department for Trembley to feel comfortable about returning in 2011.

If he wants to make a splash, I say he channels “The Hangover” for his pre-game speech on Opening Day….

(Edit from GMC: Was this just an excuse for me to work in a “How bout that ride in? I guess that’s why they call it Sin City” reference? Yes, yes it was. I also made it my Facebook status. And I think I said it to Intern Super Jack about 50 times this morning. I didn’t get much sleep last night…)

12. ESPN.com says former Browns GM Kokinis expected to rejoin Ravens’ personnel department

Sort of a no-brainer. Kokinis was very successful in Baltimore, and should be able to return without much of a power struggle. There is a real question as to whether Eric DeCosta is waiting for Ozzie Newsome to retire or whether he will pursue GM openings in the future, but having Kokinis back in the picture helps the Ravens with their personnel system entirely.

And finally, I leave you with this.

I received one of the most important e-mails of my entire life yesterday. How is it even a LITTLE BIT POSSIBLE that I didn’t know today….

IS NATIONAL CHILI DAY!!!!!

chili
chilicheese
turkeychili

As I said about the “HoagieFest” event a certain establishment held last year, this is more significant than Christmas!

My first thought is to drive down to College Park to stop by Hard Times Cafe (where I’ve heard a rumor they’re giving away free chili today to celebrate), and indulge in their Chili Mac-which helped me survive many tough nights in College Park….

HardTimes

I’ve also thought about driving all the way down to the District of Columbia, as there are few places to celebrate chili like you can at Ben’s Chili Bowl….

chilibowl

BUT…..I would like to celebrate this wonderful day here in Charm City if possible. SO….I put it to you….the fine reader (is there more than one? I think my dad pokes at this every now and then) of “Crabs and Beer” to direct me to the best chili in town.

This is a lot of responsibility for you guys. Frankly, I don’t think you can handle it. But I’m willing to give you a shot. Please don’t let me down.

As a note, I would prefer a place that both serves chili AND has great beer. Again, I’m not asking for much.

Talk to you later.

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 24 February 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Wednesday!

It’s a Happy Wednesday for me because some of you have really jumped on the crusade to point me in the direction of attractive women on TV I did not know about before…Thanks to Chad Lamasa for letting me know about Yvonne Strahovsky from NBC’s “Chuck”…

strahovsky

…who seems nice. As does Constance Zimmer, who was on HBO’s “Entourage.” Thanks to Brandon Holthaus for pointing her out to me….

zimmer

Is there someone I still don’t know about? Let me know via comments, Facebook, Twitter, or Pony Express. Preferably Pony Express, just because I think it’s an awesome way to do this.

Let’s see what everyone has to say….

1. Maryland Official Site previews tonight’s tilt with Clemson at Comcast Center

As the Terps play for things like a 1st round bye in the ACC Tournament, seeding for the NCAA Tournament, and still a shot at a regular season ACC Championship, this game is a “need to win” given their next three.

While the regular season finale at Virginia looks like the MOST winnable game of the bunch, the Terrapins have struggled mightily in season finales down in Charlottesville. Before that, the trip to Virginia Tech and home date with Duke are REALLY tough games; meaning the Terps can’t assume anything.

This is no easy task, either. Oliver Purnell’s Tigers haven’t exactly lived up to their lofty early season expectations in the ACC, but they still present a unique challenge in Trevor Booker, combined with plenty of talent in the backcourt.

I’ll say 83-79 Maryland, but it’s shaky. The good news is that the Terps will have had 75 hours between games to get ready, so the players who appeared to be fatigued late in the game Saturday against Georgia Tech should have fresh legs.

2. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Greivis Vasquez REALLY unlikely to reach Juan Dixon’s career record, but not impossible

As Patrick points out (and is anyone surprised that a topic about numbers was addressed by Patrick?), if the Terps play 10 more games (they have 4 regular season games left, so they’d need to reach the ACC Tournament championship game and the Sweet 16 to play 10) he’ll need to average 25.7 points per game to top Juan Dixon’s career record of 2,269.

Likely? Not at all. Impossible? Not at all.

As Patrick pointed out yesterday on his Twitter feed (@D1scourse), there IS something poetic about Juan Dixon being the school’s all-time leading scorer. He’s a Baltimore kid, he was an underdog, he lead the school to their first ever Final Four appearance and their first ever NCAA Championship. Does that mean that Maryland fans should root AGAINST the senior from Venezuela clipping Dixon’s record? Of course not. BUT-I don’t think Maryland fans would be too upset if Vasquez fell short.

3. Carroll County Times’ Josh Land says playing Clemson will help Terps ‘gauge progress’ since loss at Littlejohn Coliseum

Which is somewhat true. Maryland struggles on the road in general, so beating Clemson at home after a dismal performance on the road might be more of an indication of the way Gary Williams’ club just performs better in College Park than it is an indication of how much they’ve improved since losing 62-53 back on January 31.

The one area where Maryland can gauge progress is how they handle Jerai Grant; who scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in the first meeting. If Grant has similar success this time out-that’s bad news for the Terps.

And before we get off the topic, we’re sure Terrence Oglesby has no eligibility left, right?

Sorry to even bring it back up…

4. WNST.net’s Luke Jones says Terps don’t need to get to 11 or 12 ACC wins to reach NCAA Tournament

And as others (like SI’s Andy Glockner) have recently mentioned, teams that finish 9-7 or better in a league like the ACC will get IN. There just aren’t enough other teams around the country with legitimate NCAA Tournament resumes to take the spots. The ACC is the 3rd power ranked conference in the country RPI-wise, so the detractors that have claimed the league is “down” aren’t REALLY looking much past the fact that North Carolina has been dreadful and there is only one team currently ranked in the AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Top 25.

You know why else teams in the ACC will get the benefit of the doubt on Selection Sunday? Because this young lady exists…..

acc

5. Towson Official Site previews tonight’s final road trip of regular season at William & Mary

William & Mary beat Wake Forest and Maryland this season. Towson lost games by 59 points and 42 points this season.

I’m not trying to say that I’m some sort of sorcerer, but I think I know how this one ends.

It would be tough to judge the Tigers by whatever happens tonight at Kaplan Arena, mostly because almost every CAA team would be expected to lose there. Pat Kennedy and his gang will almost certainly be judged by how they perform in Richmond during the CAA Tournament, where they put together a nice run a season ago.

6. UMBC Official Site previews America East regular season finale tonight at New Hampshire

Not a whole lot else to say here. I hope Randy Monroe’s Retrievers team can squeak out one more win this season (either tonight or in the America East Tournament) to build some spirits over there in Catonsville. If I had to guess though, they probably won’t.

While we’re on the subject of UMBC, what is the point of Drew Forrester hanging out with Phil Stern if Phil hasn’t introduced me to Kim Browning yet???

browning

7. Inside Lacrosse says Michael Kimmel, Kyle Wharton and Steven Boyle had big days as Johns Hopkins crushed Delaware 15-7

This is a very impressive victory for Dave Pietramala’s Blue Jays, as the Blue Hens were coming into the game off a win at UMBC Stadium on Saturday. To push past a Delaware team as easy as Hopkins did yesterday makes a statement about just how much separation there is between them and other teams in college lacrosse.

The Jays return to action Friday night at Homewood Field against Siena, another game that can be seen on ESPNU. If I wasn’t headed to Indianapolis, I’d be there.

8. MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli says Chris Tillman to throw side session today, Brian Roberts expects to be able to take live batting practice next week

Both of these things obviously appear to be good signs, but we should probably let them play out before we assume that everyone is out of the woods. If Tillman or Bergesen has long term effects from their injuries, it will hurt a team that for once appears to be coming into the season with a set rotation.

9. The Sun’s Jeff Zrebiec says Tejada reported to Spring Training Tuesday ‘comfortable’ at 3B

Good to know.

(Sorry, it doesn’t move me much to know that a player feels “comfortable” coming into Sarasota needing to move positions. Glad he’s there. Not much else to say.)

10. Ravens Official Site says team hires Monachino as OLB Coach, reuniting him with Terrell Suggs

I really think this is a sign to me that John Harbaugh and staff are serious about getting T-Sizzle in shape. The team was NOT happy with Suggs’ conditioning after getting hurt in Training Camp, and bringing in a coach he worked with at Arizona State is a likely sign they need more from him this season. They believe in Suggs (to the tune of 60 million dollars), but they’re not going to give him a free pass anymore.

11. NFL.com’s Vic Carucci says Ravens have needs at WR, TE, CB, DE going into NFL Draft

Agreed. In fact, I’d bet 4 Chinese lunches that their first round pick is at one of those positions.

As Drew Forrester and I discussed this morning, there is one player on the Ravens board that will NOT be available at 25-but I wouldn’t be even a BIT surprised to see them move up and get. I’d tell you who it was, but I’d have to kill you.

(Hint: It is NOT Jimmy Clausen.)

12. The Sun’s Glenn Graham says despite Josh Selby’s 45, Edmondson stunned Lake Clifton to win Baltimore City hoops title

Josh Selby is a hell of a player, and that’s a hell of a win for Edmondson. Congratulations to both.

And finally, I leave you with this.

Have you seen this? Scott Van Pelt duped live on SportsCenter last night by Captain Janks from the Howard Stern Show, claiming to be Brian Westbrook? No idea how ESPN got had like this….

Talk to you later.

Terps demolish Longwood, 106-55

Posted on 19 January 2010 by Luke Jones

***Don’t forget to head to the Audio Vault to hear from Gary Williams, Sean Mosley, Jordan Williams, and James Padgett following the win over Longwood.***

As much as fans thrive on the feel-good stories of David going against Goliath in the world of sports, 99 times out of 100 the giant ends up crushing the shepherd boy with one violent blow.

Longwood, one of only six independent schools in Division I men’s basketball, came into College Park with the dream of an upset victory over a power-conference school, but the Terps immediately crushed those hopes, pummeling the Lancers, 106-55, at the Comcast Center on Tuesday night.

Six Terrapins scored in double figures with Sean Mosley leading the way with 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting. Maryland jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never looked back on its way to a 51-point victory.

“I was pleased that we got off to a good start,” coach Gary Williams said about the dominating performance. “We didn’t let it get sloppy after we got a lead.”

Truthfully, the game more closely resembled a staged match-up between the Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals than a Division I basketball game. Every active player on the roster (Steve Goins is sidelined with a knee injury) got on the scoreboard for the Terps as they now look ahead to resuming the ACC schedule against NC State on Saturday.

It’s difficult to take much of anything away from a win over a hapless school, but the most encouraging sign may have been the play of Mosley. The sophomore had averaged only 7.6 points per game in five contests after suffering a sprained ankle on Christmas, but Mosley showed an improved shooting touch Tuesday night, hitting several perimeter shots. The Baltimore native has been putting in extra time on his shooting, working out in the Comcast Center late Sunday night, to regain the improved touch he displayed earlier in the season.

“I didn’t realize I was 8-for-8 tonight,” Mosley said about his performance. “That’s what happens when things are going your way and your shots are falling. I think I did a great job by getting open and guys getting down the court.”

In addition to Mosley’s improved shooting, freshman forward James Padgett brought a stronger presence in the paint, scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds against the smaller Longwood forwards. Fellow freshman Jordan Williams continued to show why he’s the most dominant player in the Maryland frontcourt by scoring 13 points and securing 10 rebounds. Unlike Williams, Padgett has struggled to find minutes in the first three ACC games but took advantage of his 20 minutes on Tuesday night.

“Hopefully [Padgett] can do the same things when we go against bigger teams,” Gary Williams said about the reserve big man. “We need him to step up now.”

The win against Longwood does little for the Terrapins other than to build momentum for the final 13 games of the regular season, all ACC games. The mood around the team is upbeat after the convincing win at Boston College on Saturday and a strong start to the three-game homestand against the Lancers (with NC State and Miami next up).

There will be no more gimmes as the Terps have finished the non-conference schedule and will likely need to finish no worse than 9-7 in the ACC to give themselves a realistic chance for the NCAA tournament.

“I think we did a good job,” Jordan Williams said. “We didn’t care who they were. We wanted to play hard, and I think we did tonight.”

- Maryland reached the 100-point mark for the first time since a 101-50 victory over UMKC on Dec. 13, 2006. The 51-point win tied the largest margin of victory in the history of Comcast Center (also against UMKC).

The 106 points was the most scored by a Maryland team since a 111-85 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 18, 2005.

- Landon Milbourne grabbed the 400th rebound of his career and had a strong start in Tuesday’s win. The senior forward scored 11 of the team’s first 25 points and did not miss a shot until 7:20 remaining in the first half. Milbourne had 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting.

- Jordan Williams posted his second double-double of the season (the first against Villanova) with 13 points and 10 boards.

- Maryland had six players score in double figures: Mosley (21), Milbourne (19), Williams (13), Eric Hayes (10), Greivis Vasquez (10), and Padgett (10).

It’s the first time six players have scored in double figures for the Terps since Nov. 21, 2008.

- The Terps scored a season-high 68 points in the paint as they effectively ran the half-court offense and got to the basket in transition.

- All 11 Terps who played against Longwood scored at least one point.

- The Terps outrebounded the Lancers, 52-35, marking the fifth time in six games Maryland has won the rebounding battle.

Check out the final stats right here and the live blog below.

___________________________________________

9:56 p.m. — This one is FINALLY over. The Terps win a laugher, beating Longwood by a score of 106-55.

Back in a bit with the post-game wrap.

9:54 p.m. — Levent drains his first free throw, and every Terp has got on the scoreboard in this one. Doesn’t happen very often, so it’s great to see the end of the bench get some love.

9:53 p.m. — Got to run something for Levent in the final minute here. He’s the only Terp not to score in this one.

9:52 p.m. — The fans chanting for Ersin Levent, as Pearman scores and is fouled. Good for him.

105-53 with 1:28 remaining.

9:50 p.m. — Padgett throws one away trying to get it inside to Gregory. The freshman has had a strong night, but you know his coach doesn’t want to see carelessness with the basketball.

9:47 p.m. — A THUNDEROUS dunk by Gregory off the Bowie miss. That one will give the Terps a season-high 100 points in this one.

As mentioned earlier, the previous mark came against Winston-Salem State.

9:45 p.m. — With two free throws, Mosley now has a game-high 21 points. Very strong night for the Baltimore native.

And the eruption from the crowd signals the entry of Levent and Pearman into the game. Nice to see those two get the last 4:35 to play in this one.

9:43 p.m. — It’s been a very quiet night for Vasquez, but he’s just scored five points on the last two possessions. A one-hander in the lane followed by a triple gives the senior 10 points for the game.

The Terps now have an astonishing six players in double figures.

And on that note, I think we’ve seen the last of Vasquez, Hayes, and Milbourne for the night as they’re replaced by Jordan Williams, Tucker, and Bowie.

9:39 p.m. — We’ve reached the under-8 media timeout with Maryland ahead, 88-48.

You would have to think Gary Williams will be pulling his starters very shortly. No need to risk a freak injury as the team gets back into the ACC schedule against NC State on Saturday evening.

9:37 p.m. — Maryland has looked a little sloppy over the last few minutes as the Lancers have cut the lead to 38 points. Hard to keep your focus with a 40-plus point lead.

Padgett scores inside to give him 10 points and to get the lead back to 40.

9:32 p.m. — Milbourne drains a pair of free throws, giving him 18 points for the game despite four personal fouls.

9:29 p.m. — With Maryland at the 82-point mark with 11:26 remaining in the game, it’s safe to assume the Terps will eclipse the previous season high of 98 points scored against Winston-Salem State on December 22.

For those wondering, the school record for points scored in a game is 138 against Morgan State in the fall of 1994. I’m guessing Joe Smith had his fair share of those.

9:26 p.m. — We’ve reached another official timeout with Maryland holding on to a 43-point lead.

In all seriousness, you have to feel for Mike Gillian and his Longwood kids. Not only do they face the prospect of having no chance at making the tournament as an independent, but it cannot be easy to go up against high-profile schools and get thoroughly embarrassed.

9:23 p.m. — Tucker with the acrobatic layup. This one’s little more than a scrimmage against the junior varsity at this point. And I think I’m being kind in saying that.

78-37, Terps lead with 13:02 remaining. Maryland has outscored Longwood in the second half, 21-7.

9:19 p.m. — Gregory with the thunderous dunk off the Bowie miss. That one brings the relaxed crowd to its feet in a hurry!

9:17 p.m. — We’ve reached the first media timeout of the half with Maryland leading the Lancers, 71-34.

9:14 p.m. — Jordan Williams just owning the paint tonight. The freshman now has 12 points.

9:13 p.m. — Maryland is on a 10-2 run to begin the second half and now leads by 35. This just isn’t fair.

9:10 p.m. — The second half is underway, and if you’re still watching this one, you’re a HUGE Terps fan or just really bored.

Either way, I’m glad you’re still with me if you’re reading.

9:07 p.m. — Three questions for the second half:

1. Will the Terps break the 100-point mark?

2. How many minutes will Ersin Levent and David Pearman see?

3. Will Glenn Clark sneak out to go watch his man-crush Andy Roddick in the Australasian Open?

9:00 p.m. — Check out the first half stats right here.

8:58 p.m. — Two area youth teams are playing a quick scrimmage on the Comcast floor as I type. Rumors are floating around that the winner will take on the Lancers in the second half.

I hear Longwood is getting seven points against the yellow team.

8:52 p.m. — Off the in-bounds pass, Bowie is wide-open for the layup. That was embarrassingly easy.

However, Ian Persaud scores on the layup in the final two seconds. That’s not something you want to see to close out the half.

We’ve reached halftime, and this one has gone exactly as we though it would. Maryland leads the Lancers, 57-30.

8:50 p.m. — And as I just complimented the freshman, a pass goes right through his hands. Ugh.

Mosley finds the cutting Hayes who draws the foul on the floor. The Terps are now in the double bonus with one minute to play. Hayes drains them both.

8:47 p.m. — Padgett gets the ball inside and draws the foul. Yes, it’s a terrible opponent, but it’s nice to see Padgett play with aggression, something missing from his game since the early stages of the season.

The frosh makes the second free throw to give the Terps a 27-point lead.

8:45 p.m. — I think we’ve seen every possible combination of Maryland’s nine-man rotation in the first half.

I’d say it’s a safe bet we’ll see David Pearman and Ersin Levent in the second half.

8:43 p.m. — We’ve reached the final media timeout of the first half with Maryland simply dominating the Lancers. It’s 50-24 with 3:46 remaining.

I’m definitely keeping an eye on Georgia Tech-Clemson. Tech holds a three-point lead with eight minutes to play. The Yellow Jackets are playing very good basketball. Just imagine if they had a better backcourt.

8:40 p.m. — Mosley with an easy take to the basket, giving him 10 points on the night.

Following some good defense by Gregory in the low post, Mosley buries a three for the Terps to give them a 25-point lead. The sophomore form Baltimore has shot well against lesser competition this year, but it’d be nice to see that same perimeter game against the tougher opponents of the ACC.

We shall see, I suppose.

8:36 p.m. — Milbourne is having a brilliant game with 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting. The undersized forward just thrives against smaller teams.

The Terps are shooting 62 percent from the field.

8:34 p.m. — Bowie forces the steal, leading to a made jumper by Mosley. Bowie has definitely played better on the defensive end in recent games, as it seems the junior is good for a couple steals every game.

Milbourne hits a three, but the Maryland native Swecker hits one of his own for the Lancers.

We’ve reached the under-8 media timeout with the Terps comfortably ahead, 44-23, with 7:10 remaining.

8:31 p.m. — Padgett with a very nice block, but Tucker throws it away trying to force a pass into the paint. That won’t make Gary Williams very happy.

It was interesting to see Padgett and Williams on the floor at the same time before Williams picked up his second foul, earning him a trip to the bench.

8:28 p.m. — Padgett has checked into the game, and the frosh scores inside. While tonight’s game is shaping up to be a laugher, it’s a huge opportunity for Padgett to earn some more minutes.

Following a Tucker missed three, Padgett grabs the offensive board and scores…plus one!

We’ve reached the second media timeout with Maryland cruising to a 36-15 lead with 10:19 remaining in the first half. The Terps are currently on pace to score over 140 points. Might be a record.

8:24 p.m. — Antwan Carter gets the ball inside and takes it to the hole. The Lancers have broken double digits.

Following another Tucker basket, the Lancers’ Martiz Washington scores.

Definitely a very quick pace to this one with the Terps clearly coming up on the positive end.

8:21 p.m. — Bowie, Tucker, and Dino Gregory have checked into the game for the Terps. It’s fair to say all three have struggled this season, so you’d love to see them build some confidence against an inferior opponent tonight.

Milbourne hits another mid-range jumper, and Maryland leads, 25-6.

8:19 p.m. — Milbourne drains the baseline jumper, and the Lancers cannot buy a bucket.

A moment later, Milbourne is fouled on the off-balanced jumper. Count it, and the foul. The senior hits the freebie to complete the three-point play.

8:15 p.m. — Despite the strong start by the Terps, Vasquez is struggling early. The senior is 0-for-4 already by my count.

It’s 18-5 less than four minutes into the game.

8:13 p.m. — Vasquez with a nice cut to the basket but misses the layup. However, the Terps grab the offensive board and Williams finishes with the powerful, two-handed dunk!

Maryland up on the Lancers, 12-3, already. The Terps are just overwhelming the Lancers, as expected. They’re having serious problems against the press and have turned it over a few times already.

8:11 p.m. — Smith is called for the foul trying to fight for the offensive rebound against Mosley. I imagine we’ll see a lot of that tonight.

Vasquez misses his second inside attempt, but Jordan Williams grabs the offensive board and puts it in.

8:09 p.m. — The Terps control the opening tip, and Hayes draws an early foul on Swecker. With Maryland winning the rebounding battle against Wake and Boston College in the last two games, there’s no excuse not to do it again tonight.

Hayes drains both, and it’s 2-0, Terps.

8:06 p.m. — Maryland will sport the home whites this evening while the Lancers will wear their road blues.

We’re almost set for tip-off.

Don’t forget to follow our updates on Twitter (@ WNST) throughout the evening.

8:03 p.m. — It’s worth noting that Longwood has three players from the state of Maryland. Robinson (Columbia) and Swecker (Manchester) are in the starting lineup, and reserve Ian Persaud hails from Landover.

7:56 p.m. — It’s easy to see the spring semester has not started yet as you could count the number of students sitting in the “Wall” without any problem.

Classes resume next Monday, but hopefully the students will return in full force for Saturday’s game against NC State.

7:52 p.m. — Here are tonight’s starting lineups:

Longwood
G E.J. Dawson
G Aaron Mitchell
G Kevin Swecker
F Dana Smith
F Billy Robinson Jr.

Maryland
G Eric Hayes
G Greivis Vasquez
G Sean Mosley
F Landon Milbourne
C Jordan Williams

7:39 p.m. — Taking a look at the Lancers’ projected starting lineup, their tallest starter is Billy Robinson Jr., a 6-foot-7 forward (Columbia, Md.).

With all due respect to Gillian’s squad, as Longwood goes through pregame lay-up drills, it more closely resembles a high school team in terms of size. As Comcast Morning Show host Drew Forrester would say, “That’s not a low blow, just a fact.”

And speaking of being small, the crowd at Comcast more closely resembles a high school one less than 30 minutes away from tip-off. I think I can hear individual conversations going on as we speak.

7:30 p.m. — Greetings from the Comcast Center as the Terps (11-5, 2-1) take a brief respite from conference play to host the independent Longwood Lancers (4-14).

Maryland is fresh off its 73-57 road win against Boston College on Saturday afternoon and will resume the ACC schedule with a home contest against NC State on Saturday evening. Tonight’s game will mark the last non-conference contest for the Terps as they’ll finish the regular season with 13-straight conference games.

Greivis Vasquez led the way with 17 points on Saturday as the Terps controlled the tempo from the get-go while reserves Adrian Bowie (15 points) and Cliff Tucker (14 points) turned in strong performances off the bench.

I’m not going to pretend to hype this game as anymore than what it is—a non-conference game against an independent team that can only dream of making the NCAA Tournament. However, Longwood is clearly treating this game as its “Big Dance” while the Terps are looking ahead to their meeting with the Wolfpack on Saturday and the rest of the ACC schedule.

The Lancers have lost notable games to Virginia (85-72), Navy (79-76), Old Dominion (98-59), and William & Mary (84-65) as coach Mike Gillian is clearly desperate to secure any victory against a notable school in hopes of enticing a conference to expand and offer an invitation. Longwood is one of only six independent schools in Division I basketball.

John Feinstein wrote an interesting article about Gillian’s uphill battle to build an independent program following a narrow 81-80 loss to Navy last December. While highly unlikely, a miracle win over the Terps could just be the signature win the school needs to persuade a conference to open its arms and give the Lancers a real opportunity to eventually earn a trip to the tournament.

And for Maryland, tonight is solely about staying healthy and getting some quality minutes for a young player such as James Padgett. The freshman big man played only four minutes against Boston College as coach Gary Williams has cited the need for Padgett to earn his minutes by producing when he gets opportunities. He should get that chance tonight and needs to capitalize to earn more minutes in ACC play.

Tonight’s game can be seen on Comcast SportsNet with Steve Buckhantz and Ron Thompson providing the call.

Monday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

Posted on 11 January 2010 by Glenn Clark

Happy Monday!

Thanks to everyone who joined us on our WNST Bus Trip to Providence and Foxborough this weekend. Thanks to Chick-Fil-A Nottingham Square and Zeke’s Coffee for a delicious breakfast Saturday morning, Gunther Charters (and my man Stack) for getting us there, the Providence Hilton (and especially our girl Taryn downstairs at Shula’s for serving us WELL after last call) and Dave & Buster’s in Providence (with the best AND best looking staff we could have asked for) for taking care of us during our trip to New England. And thanks to the New England Patriots for taking even better care of us. Great weekend. It made this group of people DELIGHTFUL to travel home with…..

bus

Let’s see what everyone has to say…..

1. WNST.net’s Drew Forrester says ‘crazy’ season continued for Ravens with win over Pats

Crazy doesn’t begin to describe it.

In fact, if you were following us on Twitter (@WNST), you’d know that I was out of descriptive words as early as things went to 21-0. I kept going back to “surreal”, but I don’t think even that was explaining it well enough.

Looking for help, I consulted Thesaurus.com and entered “crazy.” Here are some ideas they offered…..

ape, barmy, bats in the belfry, batty, berserk, bonkers, cracked, crazed, cuckoo, daft, delirious, demented, deranged, dingy, dippy, erratic, flaky, flipped, flipped out, freaked out, fruity, idiotic, insane, kooky, lunatic, mad, mad as a March hare, mad as a hatter, maniacal, mental, moonstruck, nuts, nutty, nutty as fruitcake, of unsound mind, out of one’s mind, out of one’s tree, out to lunch, potty, psycho, round the bend, schizo, screw loose, screwball, screwy, silly, touched, unbalanced, unglued, unhinged, unzipped, wacky

This helped. Here’s your headline….

“Ravens win over Patriots mad as a March hare.”

Love it.

2. WNST.net’s Glenn Clark says Ravens win ‘glorious’, but team not Super Bowl contenders just yet

Boy, even I want to punch myself in the shoulder for saying that.

It’s true-I stand by it, but maybe I should’ve just chosen to celebrate a little more yesterday than immediately going down the “don’t get too excited” route. I love critiquing myself.

That being said, if the Ravens go to LucasOil Stadium and beat Peyton Manning and company, they are ABSOLUTELY Super Bowl worthy.

They’re already more Super Bowl worthy than the Jets, who are AMAZINGLY still alive in the playoffs despite the fact that they stink! I guess the Bengals just stink even more???

Either way, this guy is ABSOLUTELY already booking a flight to Miami today, despite the fact that there’s NO WAY his team can get there…

rex

Right???

3. Ravens Official Site’s Ryan Mink says secondary stepped up to lead Ravens to AFC Wild Card victory

Credit Domonique Foxworth.

Credit Chris Carr.

Credit Dawan Landry.

Credit Ed Reed.

Credit Frank Walker-especially for a hell of a play leading to the Landry pick.

It WAS a very impressive performance. Please someone let Randy Moss know that the game was YESTERDAY. I’m pretty sure he’s warming up right now for kickoff….

4. The Sun’s Brent Jones says Terrell Suggs, Ed Reed ‘back’ after outstanding win

Let’s hope that saying this wasn’t a one-off showing.

T-Sizzle made a MAJOR statement defensively with his sack/strip/recovery on the Pats’ first drive, and Ed Reed did the same by batting down a Tom Brady pass that appeared destined to give the Patriots their initial first down.

It has to continue. Terrell Suggs HAS to find a way to get Peyton Manning on the ground. Ed Reed has to see where Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark are going on the field. It can’t be a “one time only” thing.

5. Carroll County Times’ Aaron Wilson says Flacco ‘tough’ even if performance not overwhelming

Okay…..

Joe Flacco gutted it out yesterday, but everyone with a pulse knows that you can’t keep winning NFL playoff games with a quarterback going 4/10 for 34 yards a pick and a QB rating of 10.

I’m happy that Joe’s hip/quad didn’t cost the Ravens in their first playoff game. I’m hoping his arm will help the Ravens win their next playoff game.

6. Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy says Sunday’s loss proved Patriots’ ‘dynasty over’

Must be nice to live in a place like Beantown, eh?

Celtics are winners, Red Sox are winners, Bruins have won consitently even if they haven’t won the Stanley Cup recently, etc.

Look, the Patriots “dynasty” IS over. But it isn’t doomsday.

They’re going to have Bill Belichick next year. And Tom Brady. And Randy Moss. And Vince Wilfork. Etc.

They just have to use their picks in the NFL Draft better. They’ve really struggled there. It might be wise to try to trade 2 or 3 of their 2nd round picks to get a better pick in the first round and get an impact player.

Or they can just keep struggling. I’d be just fine with that.

7. ESPN.com’s Len Pasquarelli says Ray Rice ‘set tone’ in win at Gillette Stadium

Remember when John Harbaugh was asked about Ray Rice a couple of weeks ago and he responded “I just love the guy”?

Ditto for the rest of Baltimore.

We just love the guy.

8. CBS Sports’ Clark Judge doesn’t think Ravens will have enough to win at Indianapolis in divisional round

That’s completely fair. The Colts didn’t lose a game all season in which they actually tried. The Ravens haven’t beaten Peyton Manning since he was fresh out of Tennessee.

Of course, the Ravens had NEVER beaten the Patriots, and the Patriots had NEVER lost a playoff game at Gillette Stadium.

We’ll all be thinking about the January 2007 game at M&T Bank Stadium this week. I don’t have to tell anyone that there are a number of demons to be exorcised there…

9. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio says Harbaugh ‘disappointed’ Ravens didn’t have enough evidence to challenge punt issue

The only real question here is: which feed was being shown in the coaches’ box upstairs?

If it was the in-house feed at “The Razor”, then the assistants did NOT get to see the play again, and the Ravens had NOTHING to base a challenge off of.

If it was the CBS network feed, then they probably should have seen the play again.

Thank God the final score was 33-14 and this REALLY doesn’t matter.

10. The AP’s David Ginsburg says Greivis Vasquez tallied 22 points as Terps topped Florida State

In the second half, he needs to be the guy. Other players on this team will put up numbers (like Eric Hayes did last night and Sean Mosley & Landon Milbourne have done at other times this season), but when it comes to getting wins in ACC play, he needs to be the one to carry them down the stretch.

11. D1scourse’s Patrick Stevens says Greivis Vasquez hit big jumper to squash Seminoles’ rally in 2nd half

It’s not EXACTLY redemption from his miss against William & Mary-because the Terps were trailing the Tribe; but leading against FSU. But it is similar. The shot isn’t the problem. MISSING the shot is the problem.

12. Tallahassee Democrat’s Corey Clark says foul trouble for Solomon Alabi cost ‘Noles in loss to Terrapins

The Terps will NOT be killed by teams who are dominant inside (although Derrick Favors and Gani Lawal will give them fits when Georgia Tech comes to Comcast Center). The Terps will be KILLED by teams who can just drill outside shots and get 12 points while nobody notices. Florida State was the former.

13. The Sun’s Matt Bracken says former Miami LB commit Javarie Johnson switched pledge to Maryland

Picking up a 4 star linebacker is always a good thing. It appears as though Johnson (Dunbar in Washington, DC) just decided he had a change of heart and wanted to play close to home. As long as that’s the case, no reason to be concerned about the mental or emotional state of the kid. If it’s something more-you never know if a kid is ready to play at this level.

14. The AP’s Janie McCauley says Giants add former Orioles 1B Aubrey Huff

The best news about this? Andy MacPhail won’t try to pass along this note in a month….

“We really think the re-acquisition of Aubrey Huff solidifies us at First Base this season as we continue to develop our young players.”

But that doesn’t mean they’ve ruled out signing this guy to man the hot corner…..

15. Loyola Official Site previews tonight’s visit from Iona at Reitz Arena

A week ago, we were talking about the Siena game being a potential “gravy” win for this Greyhounds team. More realistically, the Hounds now can’t afford a home loss to the Gaels to fall to 1-5 in MAAC play.

And I leave you with this…

I didn’t get to see much of Charles Barkley hosting SNL. I’m going to try to check some more of it out during the day today. Here’s his monologue, what did everybody think?

Talk to you later from 1 Winning Drive.

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983….

Jin Soo Choi leaving Maryland

Posted on 05 January 2010 by Luke Jones

The University of Maryland has officially announced the exit of Jin Soo Choi from the university and the men’s basketball program.

Other than the obligatory reference made every telecast about Choi being the first South Korean to play Division I basketball, his leaving does not figure to dramatically affect the fate of this year’s team, as he was not a regular part of the rotation. However, it leaves only Jordan Williams, Landon Milbourne, Dino Gregory, and James Padgett in the frontcourt picture with Steve Goins’ continued health issues.

It’s doubtful that Choi would have ever developed into anything more than a depth player given his slight build and limited skill set.

While last week was certainly worse for the Terps with the decommitment of Terrence Ross and the loss to William & Mary, this certainly doesn’t boost any spirits in College Park with the ACC schedule set to begin against Florida State on Sunday.

Here’s the official release from the University of Maryland:

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jin Soo Choi has announced his intention to leave the University of Maryland and pursue a basketball career in his native Korea, head coach Gary Williams said Tuesday.

“After speaking with my family, we decided it would be best to continue my basketball career in Korea,” said Choi. “I want to thank the coaches and especially Coach Williams for giving me an opportunity to play basketball at a high level.”

“We wish Jin Soo well in whatever he decides to pursue,” said Williams. “We appreciate the contributions he’s made to our basketball program in the past two seasons.”

In nine appearances this season, Choi was averaging 0.8 points, 1.1 rebounds and 4.9 minutes per game for the Terrapins.

A Rare Flat Note in the Ballad of Greivis the Kid

Posted on 30 December 2009 by Glenn Clark

When Maryland stunned North Carolina 88-85 last February in College Park, I’ll freely admit-I gushed.

After wiping the tears out of my eyes and regaining my composure as an analyst and NOT just a fan, I couldn’t type the words fast enough.

“This was Greivis Vasquez’s Mona Lisa. His masterpiece.”

And as Drew Forrester often quips on “The Comcast Morning Show” on AM1570 WNST, Greivis Vasquez is MUCH better than many Maryland fans give him credit for.

But Maryland’s 83-77 loss to William & Mary at Comcast Center Wednesday night was a very unfortunate reminder that Greivis is not a player who has etched his place in Terrapins lore, but instead still a player who is trying to find his way even during his senior campaign.

Let me first note that Greivis Vasquez was NOT the reason the Terps fell to the Tribe. In fact, he finished with 26 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds-the type of effort only a player with great ability can put together. This Maryland team was ultimately done in by an awful night from beyond the arc (4/25), a bench that offered little help (4 points), and a William & Mary team that seized control of the game midway through the 2nd half and took advantage of every opportunity thereafter (including a 25-31 performance at the free throw line.)

Good ACC teams have faced similar opposition from tough opponents in the past. Gary Williams coached teams have faced similar opposition from tough opponents in the past. Many of those teams have overcome those odds thanks to the will and determination of a superstar player-one who answered the bell at the exact moment his team needed it. Greivis Vasquez had that opportunity Wednesday.

Maryland trailed 52-40 with 13:24 to play, but they used stingy defense to cut William & Mary’s lead to 56-49 with just over 10 minutes to play. Vasquez stepped up to block a short layup, which sent the Terrapins into transition with an opportunity to cut the Tribe lead down to 5-or even 4-and send an already energized Comcast Center crowd into an absolute frenzy. The ball came back to Maryland’s senior guard from Venezuela, and he did what any great player would want to do in that situation……he tried to lift an entire team with one shot.

The funny thing is-it looked like he had done just that.

Vasquez pulled up for thee in transition with 10:03 to play in the game, and he sent up a shot that appeared to have a perfect trajectory-but it met the rim instead of the net. William & Mary brought down the rebound; and got a 2nd chance hoop on the other end of the floor to stop Maryland’s momentum. The Tribe would extend their lead back to double figures before the Terps would score again. As quickly as the Terps appeared to have taken back the pace and flow of the game-they gave it right back to their CAA opponent, and it was never relinquished.

Immediately after Vasquez hoisted his shot, I thought to myself “that was a big moment.” If you follow WNST on Twitter, you’d know I was concerned because I IMMEDIATELY described the moment as a “big swing.” Obviously, it was.

My immediate reaction was-”I wonder if a transition 3-ball was what Gary Williams wanted in that situation?” After the game, I asked him. His response showed me a different way of thinking….

You see, it wasn’t the decision that was the problem. It was the outcome.

Great players-in the biggest situations-deliver. The mistake wasn’t that Greivis took things in his own hands and tried to carry his team-the mistake was that he didn’t make the shot fall when his team needed him most.

Greivis has shown us that at times, he can be that player. His performance against the Tar Heels 10 almost 11 months ago was the most shining example of that.

But at times, Greivis has shown us that he’s not quite ready to be that guy. Missing a transition 3 against William & Mary was an unfortunate example of that.

Greivis will have plenty more chances to finalize his legacy at the University of Maryland. Despite what some will say, a loss to William & Mary does NOT doom them to a return trip to the NIT Tournament. But it DOES make the road to a 2nd straight NCAA Tournament appearance a bit longer.

And there’s one player who has the ability to carry them down that road. He just has to deliver in similar situations going forward. Doing so might be enough to carry this team in a run through March Madness AND enough to immortalize Greivis next to Steve Blake, Lonny Baxter and Juan Dixon in the Comcast Center rafters. Three players who had a knack to deliver at the biggest of moments.

From everything we know about Greivis, he’ll want to be the guy in that position in every game the rest of the way. Following the loss, he freely recognized he needed to be the “leader” for this team, and a need to show some “responsibility.”

There’s no greater responsibility that being THE GUY-which is exactly what he is capable of being, whether the opponent is William & Mary, UNC-Greensboro, Florida State, or Duke.

It might have to come against all of them.
