Wizards guard Wall added to USA men’s basketball roster

Posted on 27 July 2014 by WNST Staff

WASHINGTON, DC  Washington Wizards guard John Wall has been selected to the 2014-16 USA Basketball Mens National Team, USA Basketball announced today.   Wall will join 18 other players, including teammate Bradley Beal, who have been selected for the 2014-2016 USA Mens National Team pool.  The 2014 USA World Championship Team and, if the U.S. qualifies, the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team, will be selected from that pool.

I am honored to be invited back to participate with USA Basketball and to have the opportunity to represent my country, said Wall.  I am also proud that Bradley and I will be able to represent the Wizards organization together while competing for roster spots against our peers from around the league.

Wall participated in the 2013 USA Basketball National Team mini-camp and recorded 10 points, three rebounds and two assists in the 2013 USA Basketball Showcase. He was a member of the 2012 USA Mens Select Team Roster that trained against the gold medalist 2012 USA Basketball Mens National Team and was a member of USA Junior National Select teams that competed in the Nike Hoop Summit in 2009.

We are excited that John is now able to participate in our training camp. He had an outstanding season with the Wizards and was a strong performer for us at last years National Team minicamp, said USA Basketball National Team Managing Director Jerry ColangeloAs we’ve said in the past, we can only extend the invitations to be part of the USA team; the players have to make the final decision and sometimes that decision changes because their circumstances have changed.

In 2013-14, Wall led the Wizards to the Eastern Conference Semifinals by averaging career highs of 19.3 points (20th in the NBA), 8.8 assists (second in the NBA) and 1.81 steals (eighth in the NBA) to go along with 4.1 rebounds while playing in all 82 games.  He earned his first All-Star selection and was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week twice while joining Chris Paul as the only two players in the NBA to average at least 19 points, eight assists, four rebounds and 1.8 steals.

Previously named 2014 USA National Team members who are expected to participate in the Las Vegas training camp include: BRADLEY BEAL (Washington Wizards); DEMARCUS COUSINS (Sacramento Kings); STEPHEN CURRY (Golden State Warriors); ANTHONY DAVIS (New Orleans Pelicans); DEMAR DEROZAN (Toronto Raptors); ANDRE DRUMMOND (Detroit Pistons); KEVIN DURANT (Oklahoma City Thunder); KENNETH FARIED (Denver Nuggets); PAUL GEORGE (Indiana Pacers); JAMES HARDEN (Houston Rockets); GORDON HAYWARD (Utah Jazz); KYRIE IRVING (Cleveland Cavaliers);KYLE KORVER (Atlanta Hawks); DAMIAN LILLARD (Portland Trail Blazers); KEVIN LOVE (Minnesota Timberwolves); CHANDLER PARSONS (Dallas Mavericks); DERRICK ROSE (Chicago Bulls); and KLAY THOMPSON (Golden State Warriors).

All 19 players have prior USA Basketball experience and the group includes Davis, Durant, Harden and Love who were members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team that brought home gold, while Curry, Durant, Love and Rose were part of the 2010 USA World Championship Team that also claimed gold.

The 2014-16 USA Basketball National Team coaching staff features USA head coach and Duke Universitys Naismith Hall of Fame mentor MIKE KRZYZEWSKI. Serving as assistant coaches are USA Basketball and Syracuse University veteran coach JIM BOEHEIM, Chicago Bulls head coach TOM THIBODEAU and New Orleans Pelicans head coach MONTY WILLIAMS.

Rice scores 24 but Wizards bow out to Kings to Summer League semis

Posted on 21 July 2014 by WNST Staff

Game Recap: Kings 74, Wizards 62

The Sacramento Kings (5-1) earned a spot in the Samsung NBA Summer League Championship with their convincing 74-62 victory over the Washington Wizards (5-1) Sunday at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center. Sacramento used a 39-10 run that spanned the first and second quarters to outdistance itself from Washington to earn its fifth straight victory in Las Vegas.

The Kings will square off against the Houston Rockets (5-2), who are also riding a five-game winning streak of its own, in Monday’s title bout at 6:00 pm.

Trailing 7-4, Sacramento scored six straight points to turn the game’s momentum in its favor. Nik Stauskas, the eighth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, got things going — a 14-4 run — with a game-tying 3-pointer moments before Quincy Acy sank a go-ahead free throw. The Kings wound up outscoring the Wizards 10-4 the remainder of the period.

Sacramento kept the pedal down in the second as its lead grew to as much as 26 points — 43-17 — with a 25-6 run that lasted the initial 7:29 of the stanza.

In all, the Kings had nine different players contribute at least two points in the massive 39-10 outburst. Stauskas (five points), Acy (two), Eric Moreland (two) and Ray McCallum (five) combined for the first 14 points that sparked the first-quarter offensive. MarShon Brooks scored 14 in the second quarter alone to couple with 11 more from a combination of Jared Cunningham (three), Ra’shad James (two), Brendan Lane (two) and Ben McLemore (two).

Sacramento took a 21-point lead into intermission and maintained a healthy distance until Washington rattled off a 19-5 run to pull within seven in the early stages of the fourth quarter. The spurt began with 5:11 remaining in the third and the Wizards trailing by 21. Otto Porter (seven), Glen Rice Jr. (five), Jarell Eddie (five) and Daniel Theis (two) combined to pull their team within single digits for the first time since early in the second frame.

That seven-point margin was the closest Washington would get to Sacramento as the lead grew to as much as 17 midway through the final stanza.

Sacramento was paced by a quartet of players in double figures. Brooks paced the team with 14, while McCallum added 11 to 10 apiece from Acy and Cunningham. Moreland, who had six points, led all players with 12 rebounds — 10 of which came on the defensive boards.

Rice Jr. had a game-high 24 points for the Wizards behind an 8-for-23 day from the field. He sank one 3-pointer and made all seven free throws.
