Drew’s Morning Dish – Fri., April 5

Drew’s Morning Dish – Fri., April 5

Posted on 05 April 2013 by Drew Forrester

In case you missed it, I picked the Orioles and Dodgers to go to the World Series during this past Monday’s edition of The D&L Window Tinting Morning Reaction.

A few of you sent me emails filled with jabs, jeers and LOL’s.

Well, as the great Steve Perry of Journey once sang, “Who’s Laughing Now?”

Wait, that was who “Who’s Crying Now?”

Same difference.  You get the point.

See you in October, baby.

————————————————————————-

Now we’re finding out the truth about Auburn football.  It basically looked like this: A bunch of players consistently failing drug tests for synthetic marijuana, to go along with paying the players and changing grades to make sure they remained academically eligble.

One of the dead giveaways came when Auburn school officials reviewed the Basket Weaving 101 final exam of star running back Michael Dyer.

He evidently needed 55 minutes to complete the 4-question test and do you know what he got on it?

Ketchup.

There is some good news though.  The grad student who wound up later taking the test for Dyer got 4-out-of-4 and Dyer was allowed to continue his football career at Auburn.

Whew…that was close.

—————————————————————————-

Amidst all of the discussion about Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice, I’m stunned no one has mentioned this and it’s the first thing that came to my mind when I watched the video.

Big ups to the kids on that Rutgers team for not slugging that idiot.

Seriously.

Those kids showed TREMENDOUS restraint.

Actually, they’re not kids.

They’re adults.

And, despite his position as their coach, what happened in that video – and countless other times at practice – was cause for a fist-fight if I’ve ever seen one.  Usually, when one adult shoves another adult or throws a basketball at another adult, someone gets punched.

If your coach makes you do 50 push-ups or run the steps, you mutter “a-hole” under your breath and off you to go start the push-ups or hit the steps.

But when that Mike-Rice-sort-of-aggressiveness takes over and the coach goes completely out of his mind, anything goes at that point.

Here’s a “Morning Dish Golf Clap” for those kids at Rutgers who didn’t haul off and knock that’s clown teeth out.

They’re the winners in this one.

—————————————————————————

Brendon Ayanbadejo hinted that one of the reasons the Ravens let him go was his position on gay rights.

I understand.

It’s never easy to get fired.

You wind up saying something about the boss’s niece that you shouldn’t or you yell, “You’re a lousy softball player!” to the guy taking over for you.

You say anything you can to remind people that there’s no way you got fired just because they have someone coming along that might do your job a hair better than you.

You come up with a wild story about being released in part because you think gay people should be allowed to marry — “because there’s no way I got fired for my production.”

Brendon knows why he was released.

He’s 37 years old and he makes too much money.

Done.

——————————————————————————

Admit it.

It’s kind of a dreary morning when you wake up eager to check and see how bad the Astros lost and you buzz through the scores only to find out they had an off-day.

They should have to play every single day or night.

——————————————————————————

I can’t believe people in Baltimore actually took to Twitter on Thursday and snickered, laughed and giggled when Brian Roberts came up lame in the top of the 9th inning with some sort of leg injury.

You know the rules:  You NEVER, EVER, EVER laugh at someone when they get hurt.  NEVER.  It’s just not cool.

Unless he plays for the Flyers.  Then it’s fine.

In fact, it’s recommended.

—————————————————————————–

Every Friday on the show, I play a bunch of small clips of various Bruce Springsteen songs coming back from commercial break.

I call it “Friday with the Boss”.

I also play a full song at the beginning of the show in place of my traditional show-starter, “Raised on the Radio” by The Rayvns.

This morning, I started with “Land of Hope and Dreams” by Springsteen.

It’s opening day in Baltimore.  Our baseball team is good once again.

If you’re fortunate enough to have a ticket to this afternoon’s game, you’ll be sitting in Camden Yards — Baltimore’s own version of “Land and Hope and Dreams”.

Have fun.

—————————————————————————-

And finally, for the last two weeks or so, I’ve been trying to buy Masters practice round tickets from various sources on the internet.  I’m going down to Augusta Monday night and will hang out at the greatest course in America on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Anyway – scammers are EVERYWHERE on the internet, as you all probably know.

Some of them are sort of obvious…like one guy who was selling Thursday tickets for $200 each “just to get rid of them”.

Yeah, sure.

Some of the scammers are much more “professional” about it and you have to really be paying attention or you’ll get hoodwinked.

I saw one ad, though, that didn’t take much investigating to know, for sure, it was definitely a scam.

“FOUR LOWER RESERVE SEATS TO THE MASTERS TUESDAY PRACTICE ROUND! GREAT PRICE FOR THE BEST SEATS AT THE COURSE!”

What a shame.  I was looking for something in the upper deck.

NBA Odds

“The huge trade with James Harden going to Houston no doubt will improve the Rockets but maybe not to the extent some people expect and in turn their win total jumped up by 3 from 30.5 to 33.5 , while the Thunder were less impacted dropping slightly from 59.5 to 58.5. Our Championship odds have not changed too much over the course of the last few weeks but some trendy teams seem to be the Nuggets whom we lowered from 66-1 to 33-1 and the 76ers have taken quite a bit forcing us to move them down from 50-1 to 33-1.”

10 Sports Limericks

Posted on 25 October 2012 by Thyrl Nelson

This week the Ravens are stammering,

The Texans just gave them a hammering.

You knew they were done,

When they threw out the run.

And now fans want to fire Cam Cameron

The Tigers had visions of grandeur,

And threw out an ace in Verlander.

But for being the best,

Maybe had too much rest.

And in Game 1 got beat by a Panda

There once was a QB named Cam,

Who wanted to be Superman.

But when things don’t work out,

He always starts to pout.

So now people are calling him Sham.

The Bounty-Gate thing was malicious,

Inspiring hits that were vicious.

But the players suspended,

Had their punishments ended.

And now have beef with two commishes.

There once was a Jag named Maurice,

Who called the Bears quarterback weak.

He should laugh at himself,

Because he’s now on the shelf.

With a little foot that he just tweaked.

Bring Out Your Dead

Posted on 24 October 2012 by Thyrl Nelson

Inspired by the scene in “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” where the body cart is being pushed through the city during the plague as the mortician cries “Bring Out Your Dead”. As one man ambitiously tries to deliver a not quite dead elderly man to the cart hilarity ensues. Here’s a look at who’s being (or has been) written off for dead in the sports world, and what the final prognosis might be.

“I’m Not Dead Yet” – Despite reports to the contrary these guys are not dead yet, but may have one foot in the proverbial grave and another on a banana peel.

Cam Newton – Superman has become the Super-Sulker but he’s not dead yet, not by a long shot. Still there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. Newton’s post-loss body language has been unbearable. We can all appreciate that the kid wants to win, but he’ll have to do some growing up before he can become a leader of men. Cam took everyone (including himself) to task in the wake of the Panthers most recent defeat, but mostly seemed to point fingers at his offensive coordinator. Newton is looking for a game plan that authors blowouts but will sooner or later have to learn that life in the NFL doesn’t work that way. In 3 of his 5 losses this season, Cam has had the ball in his hands with a chance to win the game in the final 5 minutes. If he intends to be the star he’s being cast as, he’ll need to get comfortable in those situations. It’d also help if Newton stopped shaking off teammates’ efforts to celebrate TDs with him while clearing out space to do his ridiculous Superman dance.

Cam Cameron – Sticking with Cams, reports of the demise of Cam Cameron might be a byproduct of Ravens fans wishes more than anything else. In the wake of the Ravens most recent disappointment against the Houston Texans however, another long and introspective look at this offense might be long overdue. Cameron was “under fire” by owner Steve Bisciotti last season and managed to survive. There’s no reason to believe the Ravens will make a change before seasons end, but in the event that it doesn’t end in the Super Bowl, this season could very likely be Cameron’s last.

Maurice Jones-Drew – Remember MJD calling out Jay Cutler a couple of seasons ago for surrendering during the playoffs due to an MCL injury that didn’t look that serious on TV and didn’t require surgery. Last week in a game the Jaguars lost in overtime to a less than spectacular Oakland Raiders squad, MJD watched from the sidelines while nursing a foot injury that didn’t look that serious on TV and that apparently won’t require surgery. This on the heels of his extended and controversial holdout from training camp while trying to earn a new contract or force a trade won’t buy Jones-Drew much empathy as he watches from the sidelines for the next couple of weeks at least.

Lance Armstrong – Maybe the Lance Armstrong fiasco will give us a long overdue chance to examine ourselves. He lorded over a sport that was rampant with doping and drug use, and while he adamantly proclaimed being above it throughout his once storied and undeniably dominant career. Now having given up the fight and having been stripped of all of his career accolades Armstrong also finds that those who rode his coattails to success and fortune aren’t set to stand by him in the hard times. It’s still impossible to ignore all of the good that Armstrong has done in his career, and it seems only a matter of time before he’ll inevitably bounce back in the court of public opinion…but it doesn’t look like it’ll be terribly easy, or any time soon for that matter.

Dirk Nowitzki – Just as the world was ready to close the book on the legacy of Dirk Nowitzki he surprised everyone and cemented that legacy by winning an NBA championship. He backed it up however by showing up for a lockout shortened NBA season the following year out of shape, and now looks ready to miss at least the first few weeks of this season as he recovers from ankle surgery. It may now be safe to close the book on Nowitzki’s NBA legacy. It appears he got that title just in the nick of time.
