This years US Open is intriguing since both the Mens and Womens draws are more wide open than usual. The Women will be missing the two ladies with the most Grand Slam titles over the past few years, since both Justine Henin and serena Williams are hurt. On the Mens side everyone is here but all the top contenders have a little bit of vulnerability either at this stage of their career or on this surface. It should be an exciting two weeks with some surprises and lost of good tennis.

It makes it that much more exciting when history is made, when it’s done in a history making way. Roger Federer won his 6th Wimbledon and record breaking 15th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon yesterday. If he had won in three easy sets it would not have diminished the accomplishment, but that’s not the way it turned out. It took Roger over 4 hours to secure a 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 victory over a completely game Andy Roddick.

I know I am cheating a little by not posting this until after the first round ended, but this is when I got around to it. I am going to give you my top 5 contenders to win the championship, plus a couple of darkhorses who could do much better than expected. Afterwards I am going to repost my top 20 players of the Open Era, that I originally put up before the French Open. Partially becuase there is a slight change and partially because it was when my blog was still hidden waway in the contestants section. So Ladies first , here is my outlook on the Wimbledon Championships.

Drew and I discussed who the top mens tennis player of all time is, while I was a contestant in the KOBST competition. It made me think about who I thought it was and what the criteria should be. I have limited it to the Open era (post 1968) since comparing accomplishments amongst modern players and the amateur era is almost impossible. It’s tough enough to compare guys from the 70′s to guys from the 90′s, so I’ll just stick with that
