Top 10 Baseball Distractions

November 15, 2009 | Glenn Clark

I’m doing things a LITTLE BIT different this week. The Distractions are hitting on Sunday night, and the 15-7-0 will hit sometime tomorrow. Sorry for the confusion, this trip to Cleveland is screwing up my schedule a bit.

Honorable Mention:
NBA: Cavaliers @ Wizards (Wednesday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet and ESPN), Wizards @ Thunder (Friday 8pm from Oklahoma City live on Comcast SportsNet Plus), Wizards @ Spurs (Saturday 8:30pm from San Antonio live on Comcast SportsNet and NBA TV); Boxing: Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward (Saturday 10pm from Oakland live on Showtime); NHL: Capitals @ Rangers (Tuesday 7pm from New York live on VERSUS), Canadiens @ Capitals (Friday 7pm from Verizon Center live on Comcast SportsNet), Capitals @ Maple Leafs (Saturday 7pm from Toronto live on Comcast SportsNet Plus & NHL Network), Capitals @ Senators (Monday 7pm from Ottawa live on Comcast SportsNet); NCAA Field Hockey Final Four: Maryland vs. Princeton (Friday 2pm from Winston-Salem live on CBS College Sports. Championship Game Sunday at 12pm.); “Star Trek” available in stores on DVD and Blu-Ray (Tuesday); Dave Matthews Band musical guest on Saturday Night Live (Saturday 11:30pm NBC)

10-Chesapeake Oyster & Beer Festival (Friday 6pm Timonium Fairgrounds)

You mean to tell me that you plan to combine all of this……

With all of this????

I don’t just want to attend this event. Nay, I want to somehow make this my religion!

9-High School Football Regional Finals: 4A North Final: Patterson vs. Thomas Johnson (Friday 7pm Poly High School), 3A North Final: Franklin @ Hereford (Friday 7pm), 2A North: Chesapeake-Baltimore County vs. Eastern Tech (Friday 7pm CCBC Dundalk), 1A East Final: Havre de Grace @ Joppatowne (Friday 7pm)

There’s a rumor that Chesapeake and ET are playing for the rights to the word “Vo.”

And as always-a reminder. If you’re going to high school football game this weekend in Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Harford County or elsewhere, please remember……

8-Soccer: NCAA Tournament Selection Show (Monday 5:30pm ESPNews); Baltimore Blast vs. Philadelphia KiXX (Saturday 7:35pm 1st Mariner Arena), Team USA vs. Denmark (Wednesday 2:30pm from Aarhus)

It will be kinda difficult for me to root for The Red White and Blue Wednesday afternoon. Not because I don’t LOVE America (trust me-I chant U-S-A even at some very inappropriate times); but because… know…..who doesn’t love the Danish?

7-NASCAR Ford 400 (Sunday 2:30pm from Homestead Miami live on ABC)

A small percentage of the country is going to celebrate the crowning of the Sprint Cup champion Sunday in South Florida. The majority of the country is going to celebrate the fact that we will no longer be forced to watch NASCAR highlights during SportsCenter. Either way, it’s really a win-win.

By the way, I’ve always been impressed with how NASCAR finds just the right locations to hold their major events. I mean, nothing says NASCAR quite like this place, huh?

6-Mixed Martial Arts: WEC: Mike Brown vs. Jose Aldo (Wednesday 9pm from Las Vegas live on VERSUS), Strikeforce Challengers: Tyron Woodley vs. Rudy Bears (Friday 11pm from Kansas City live on Showtime), UFC 106: Tito Ortiz vs. Forrest Griffin 2 (Saturday 10pm from Las Vegas live on Pay-Per-View)

We could screw around here and talk about how there are a ton of great MMA fights this week that everyone should be excited about; or we can get to the point. Let’s all be thankful that Tito Ortiz is fighting Saturday night; as we will certainly be treated to PLENTY of gratuitous footage of his lovely bride Jenna……

5-College Football: Maryland @ Florida State (Saturday 12pm from Tallahassee live on Raycom, WJZ 13 locally), Towson @ James Madison (Saturday 3pm-coverage on AM1570 WNST begins at 2:45pm), Ohio State @ Michigan (Saturday 12pm from Ann Arbor live on ABC)

I HATE the Seminoles; but they DO have two things going for them. 1-This song is actually very cool…..

2-Their biggest fan-Jenn Sterger-seems like a very nice gal…..

Moving forward-whoever “Nicole” is; she went to JMU. That does not make me a fan of the Dukes-but it makes me consider it.

And finally; Ohio State-Michigan is one of my favorite rivalries in sports. I know OSU’s win over Iowa makes this somewhat meaningless because the Buckeyes have already punched their ticket to The Rose Bowl; but don’t tell Rich Rodriguez that. A Wolverines loss will put him SQUARELY on the hot seat amongst their fans; while a victory might be enough to get a a statue of R-Rod built outside The Big House. I tend to pull for Ohio State when these teams play. With no offense to “Let’s Go Blue”, this is one of THE greatest songs in all of sports…..

And for the record, this was probably the greatest commercial ESPN ever made……

4-WWE Survivor Series (Sunday 8pm from Verizon Center live on Pay-Per-View)

You know why I’m going to watch? One word. Maryse……

3-College Basketball: Fairfield @ Maryland (Tuesday 8pm from Comcast Center live on Comcast SportsNet), New Hampshire @ Maryland (Friday 8pm Comcast Center), Buffalo @ Towson (Saturday 1pm Towson Center), Loyola @ UMBC (Wednesday 7:30pm from RAC Arena live on MASN), UMBC @ George Washington (Saturday 2pm Smith Center), Loyola @ Mt. St. Mary’s (Saturday 2pm Knott Arena), East Tennessee State @ Morgan State (Thursday 7pm Hill Field House), Washington Adventist University @ Coppin State (Thursday 7:30pm Coppin Center)

On top of all that, Terps prospects Tobias Harris and Ashton Pankey are each expected to make their college commitments this week. Harris was in attendance as the Terrapins topped Charleston Southern Friday night. Pankey is choosing between College Park and Houston-and with no offense to ANY group named “Cougars”, I get the feeling the ACC might be a better choice.

That being said; I’ve always wanted to be a part of a recruiting visit. Kinda like Jesus Shuttlesworth in He Got Game. And by that, I mean-I’d like to be brought into a room where two nice young ladies were there to do anything I wanted. Of course, I’d probably choose these two……

And the activity I chose would probably have something to do with Hummus. But that’s not the point here…….

2-Bruce Springsteen (Friday 7:30pm 1st Mariner Arena), Star Wars in Concert (Wednesday 7:30pm 1st Mariner Arena), Daughtry (Thursday 7pm Patriot Center), Kenny Wayne Shepherd (Thursday 7pm Rams Head Live), Matisyahu (Saturday 7pm Sonar), Jim Gaffigan (Friday 8pm & 10:30pm Lyric Opera House)

This is CLEARLY the strangest week of concerts in the history of the Charm City area. First of all, this guy is funny…..

Second, this guy shreds……

Third, THIS GUY……..

Somehow lost to THIS GUY on American Idol…….

Fourth, THIS guy may or may not bathe…..

Fifth, WTF IS THIS?!?!?!?

And Sixth, this goes up there with U2 back in 2001 in the running for the Biggest Act to Ever Play in our fine city. Which makes this convenient…….

1-Colts @ Ravens (Sunday 1pm from M&T Bank Stadium live on CBS), “The Blind Side” opens in theaters (Friday)

Man, the Ravens are facing a really crucial part of their schedule. Good thing they don’t have to play any good teams or anything like that.

By the way, I would give any amount of money to watch this game with Bob from Parkville. “You son of a bitch, you are not John Unitas!”

Also-for the record-Sandra Bullock looks AMAZING in The Blind Side…..

Flexing my mic muscles since 1983…..
