#WNSTSweet16 – The 16 local athletes who never won a title, but deserved to win one

January 28, 2014 | Drew Forrester

#14 is Lydell Douglas Mitchell, a running back for the Baltimore Colts from 1972-77.  Mitchell, still a Baltimore resident to this day, was one of the NFL’s best all purpose running backs and helped the Colts to three straight AFC East titles (75-77) but never earning a championship ring with the Colts.  During that 3-year span, Mitchell ran for over 1,000 yards in each season (back when running for 1,000 yards was a big deal) and in 1974 and 1977, he led the entire NFL in pass receptions.  Anyone who attended Colts home games in the 1970’s remembers with great fondness those chilly winter Sunday afternoons when Mitchell was the most powerful force on the Baltimore offense.

Great list. My only quibble is including Rosie Napravnick. She is entering the prime of her jockey career. Given her familiarity with Pimlico, Belmont and Churchill (where she is based in May and June) she will have many more cracks at a Triple Crown win.
