Edsall says Towson High’s Cudjoe-Virgil stood out in Terps’ scrimmage

COLLEGE PARK, Md. –

Head Coach Randy Edsall

On the competition for the second quarterback spot:

“I will just take a look at the film and we will get it all done from there. It is just like anytime, there is always some good and some bad. We will get a chance to evaluate and come up with some decisions by Monday.”

On conclusions from Saturday’s scrimmage:

“You are not going to sit here and make any decision just based on what you saw with your naked eye. You really have to sit down and make a true evaluation. You have to watch the film and factor everything into the decision.”

On Yannik Cudjoe-Virgil’s performance:

“He played well. I like that effort. He has been showing that kind of effort ever since he has gotten here. He was a guy we always thought would be in the mix. We will look at the film, evaluate it, and see just how well he did.”

On Jacquille Veii:

“I will not have anything until Monday on any injuries.”

On Saturday’s scrimmage:

“I thought the defense really got after it. Offensively, it is tough. I made the decision not to have C.J. [Brown] and Stefon [Diggs] out here. I know what they can do. I needed to evaluate other parts of the game. I know how they have been performing and how our offense has been operating from practice. You get a better feel for guys that you are going to be able to count on and what you have to help them get better at. I think that is the big thing. I wanted to get everyone on film and give everyone an opportunity to show what they could do. Now we will sit down and watch the film tonight. Tomorrow, we as coaches will sit down and talk about it and come Monday we will have the two-deep.”

On certain players earning the trust of the coaching staff:

“There are quite a few guys. I think we have more on defense in terms of a depth standpoint then what we have on offense. I am still not happy with the guys on the offensive line in terms of their technique and fundamentals. I am trying to get to eight guys to be able to count on. Other positions you feel pretty good.  You feel that you have a two-deep. There are guys that have made that impact. From a field goal standpoint, I think we still have some work to do. I do not think that decision is going to be made by Monday.  We have a lot of things we have to work on. We do not have to be ready tomorrow. We still have time to get ourselves ready.”

On what the quarterbacks showed today:

“I have to watch the film.  I am not going to make any comments until after I see the film.”

On the linebackers:

“I think we do have some pretty good speed and athleticism in the linebacker position. There is a lot of competition there. There are some young guys that have the ability. We have to make some decisions there. Do you take those guys and cut their teeth this year and put them on special teams? Where they can probably help us and make us better. Or do you redshirt some guys? We have some interesting decisions to make, but I do like the speed and athleticism of our linebackers.”

On if it is getting harder to keep Will Likely off the field:

“Stefon [Diggs] is our return guy. I feel comfortable if Will was back there or DeAndre [Lane]. I wanted to try and cover as many bases as I could so if we do have issues, we know where to turn. That is what training camp is all about. The thing that I am going to feel good about after I get done watching and evaluating this film is that I know exactly what our strengths and weaknesses are going to be. I am going to know who the guys who can help us and count on.”
