Maryland opens regular season against Connecticut; Schedule features home games against Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Virginia
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Maryland men’s basketball team announced Thursday its 2013-14 schedule, which features the regular season-opener against Connecticut at the Barclays Center, a matchup with Ohio State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and a nationally-televised Big Monday home contest with 2013 Final Four participant Syracuse.
The Terrapins will play an 18-game conference slate, highlighted by home-and-home series with ACC newcomer Pittsburgh, Virginia, Florida State and Virginia Tech.
In addition to hosting Syracuse, the Terps have conference home games against Miami, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Notre Dame. Maryland will also travel to Clemson, Duke, North Carolina, Boston College and North Carolina State in its final season in the ACC.
Maryland will play eight teams that participated in last season’s NCAA Tournament. The Terps are currently slated to be featured on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU on 14 occasions, the ACC Network six times with their final regular season game against Virginia on March 9 to be televised nationally on CBS.
“Our schedule features many of the top basketball programs in the country and we are excited to compete against these outstanding teams,” Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said. “We have a number of challenging early season matchups, which will prepare us for a very competitive conference schedule.”
The Terps will open the season with an exhibition matchup against Catholic on Nov. 3 before traveling to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., for the second consecutive season to play Connecticut on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2. The Terps face the Huskies for the first since the 2002 NCAA Tournament, when Maryland defeated Connecticut, 90-82, in the Elite Eight en route to the 2002 national championship.
After a pair of home games against Abilene Christian on Nov. 13 and Oregon State on Nov. 17, the Terps travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the Paradise Jam. Maryland will open the tournament against Marist on Nov. 22 and play two additional games in St. Thomas.
Maryland will host Morgan State on Nov 29 as part of the Paradise Jam tournament and will follow with a road game at Ohio State on Dec. 4 in the aforementioned Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Terrapins will then play George Washington in the BB&T Classic at Verizon Center before opening their ACC slate on the road against Boston College on Dec. 12.
The Terps conclude the month of December with a four-game homestand vs. Florida Atlantic (12/14), Boston University (12/21), Tulsa (12/29) and N.C. Central (12/31). Tulsa’s head coach, Danny Manning, is a former University of Kansas teammate of Mark Turgeon. The Maryland-Tulsa game is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU.
Maryland opens the New Year hosting Georgia Tech on Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. on the ACC Network and travels to play at Pittsburgh onJan. 6 at 7 p.m. on ESPN 2. Maryland is at Florida State on Jan.12 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU and hosts conference newcomer Notre Dame on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. Maryland has its lone meeting against N.C. State at Raleigh on Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
The Terps host consecutive home games at Comcast Center against Pittsburgh on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 and meet Miami on Jan. 29 at noon on the ACC Network.
During the month of February, Maryland’s schedule features four road contests at Virginia Tech, at North Carolina, at Virginia and at Duke and has a pair of national-televised games on Big Monday on ESPN (at Virginia and vs. Syracuse). The Terps head to Virginia Tech on Feb. 1 at noon and follow with their only meeting at North Carolina on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. Both contests will be televised on the ACC Network. Maryland hosts Florida State on Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. on ESPN2 and then features consecutive road games at Virginia on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. on ESPN and its lone matchup at Duke on Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. on ESPN or ESPN 2. Maryland, who won two of its three games against Duke last season, was the lone team in the country to beat the Blue Devils twice.
The Terps will host Wake Forest on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. on RSN and will have their second appearance on Big Monday (first at home) against Syracuse, a 2013 NCAA Final Four participant, on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. on ESPN. Maryland meets Syracuse for the first time since 2007 and leads the all-time series 5-2.
Maryland will tip off the month of March at Clemson on March 2 at 1 p.m. on the ACC Network and will conclude its regular season with a pair of home games against Virginia Tech on March 4 at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network and versus Virginia on March 9 at noon with a nationally-televised game on CBS.
Regional broadcast times for non-conference games will be announced at a later date.
