Terps to Host Virginia in ACC/Big Ten Challenge
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men’s basketball team will host rival Virginia Wednesday, Dec. 3, in the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge as announced today by ESPN. It marks the Terps’ first time competing in the contest as a member of the Big Ten Conference.
Maryland concluded its tenure in the ACC this past spring with a thrilling season finale overtime victory against No. 5 Virginia at Comcast Center on March 9. The Terrapins have played the Cavaliers more than any team in program history, garnering a 107-74 mark in 181 meetings.
The Terps are tied for the second-most wins (10) all-time in ACC/Big Ten Challenge history, trailing only Duke (13). Maryland also holds a formidable 5-1 home record in the contest, with its only loss coming on Nov. 29, 2011 to Illinois.
The Challenge, now approaching its 16th year, is breaking new ground with the expansion to 14 games. Nine of the 14 games are first-time matchups in the Challenge.
The Big Ten Conference is unbeaten in its last five ACC/Big Ten Challenges dating back to 2009. Since winning three straight from 2009 to 2011, the Big Ten has tied with the ACC (6-6) the last two seasons.
Start times and network assignments will be confirmed and announced in early August.
