Vellano one of four players that also garnered 2011 All-America honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland defensive lineman Joe Vellano and tight end Matt Furstenburg have been selected to the 2012 Preseason All-ACC Football Team, the league announced Wednesday.
Vellano was a consensus first team All-ACC choice following the 2011 season and received 58 votes for the 2012 Preseason All-ACC team, third most among defensive players. The senior has also been named to the preseason watch lists for five national awards: the Bednarik, Lombardi and Walter Camp Awards, and the Bronco Nagurski and Outland Trophies.
Vellano is one of four 2011 All-Americans to be chosen to the team, joining David Amerson of NC State, Omoregie Uzzi of Georgia Tech and Sammy Watkins of Clemson.
Furstenburg started all 12 games last season and finished third in the conference in receptions per game (2.6) and receiving yards (348). He was also named to the preseason watch list for the Mackey Award, which honors the nation’s top tight end, on July 10.
Voting for the 25-man team was conducted by media in attendance at the ACC Football Kickoff, which was held July 22-23 in Greensboro, N.C. A total of 68 ballots were cast.
Watkins, who was tabbed as the Preseason ACC Player of the Year by media at the ACC Kickoff, was the lone unanimous selection. Clemson, Florida State, and North Carolina led the way with four selections each, while Virginia Tech had three. Maryland, NC State and Virginia each had two players chosen.
