Morgan Tries to Bounce Back Against Howard Monday Night

• Morgan State will face the Howard Bison on Monday, Feb. 6 in a “Battle of the Beltway” matchup set to tip at 7:30 p.m. MSU will attempt to snap a three-game losing streak when the Bison come to Hill Field House. Howard will look to bounce back from a 78-65 loss at MD-Eastern Shore on Saturday.
• MSU has won eight straight games against the Bison since 2006.
• Kevin Thompson scored a team-high 19 points with 15 rebounds and DeWayne Jackson  scored 17, but Coppin State’s Akeem Ellis hit a pair of free throws with .5 seconds left to help seal an 88-86 win Saturday night at Hill Field House.
• Morgan State will enter Monday night’s contest having lost three straight, including four of its last five games.
• MSU will look to improve upon a 3-4 home record.
• Kevin Thompson has scored in double-digits in 14 of 20 games, and has posted six double-doubles (pts & rebs) so far this season.
• Senior point guard Larry Bastfield is the only Bear to have started in every game (31) last season…currently he has started in 51 straight games.
• Junior swingman DeWayne Jackson currently leads the team by averaging 13.4 ppg and 3.5 rpg, including a career-high 33 points against Norfolk State on Jan. 14th.
• Redshirt sophomore Ian Chiles (7-foot-2) is the first 7-footer since MSU legend Marvin Webster to grace the campus of Morgan State University … Chiles, a Cliffside Park, N.J. product, is currently averaging 9.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks so far this season.
• The Bears completed the 2010-11 season with a 17-14 mark and posted a 10-6 conference record.
• Morgan State was selected to win the MEAC Regular Season Title, edging out last year’s MEAC Tournament Champion Hampton. The Bears received eight (8) first place votes and a totaled 616 points to take hold of the conference’s top spot going into the season.
During the Bozeman era the Bears have gone 46-13 (.779) home record inside the confines of Hill Field House, including a loss against Coppin State on Feb. 4.
•  Give the Bears a 4-6 record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
•  Give Todd Bozeman his 107th victory as MSU’s head coach.
•   Give the Bears its fourth home victory of the season.
•   Give the Bears its ninth straight victory against Howard
 Junior forward DeWayne Jackson eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his career as a result of pouring in a career-high 33 points against Norfolk State on Jan. 14. With 1,089 points,Jackson is the 21st member of the 1,000-point club at MSU.
•   Monday night’s game will be the 99th meeting between Morgan State and Howard in men’s basketball. The Bears hold a 58-40 advantage in the series since 1950.
•   MSU has won eight straight against the Bison since 2006,including 10 of the last 11 meetings.
•  The last time MSU defeated Howard at the Hill Field House was Jan. 8, 2011. Kevin Thompson recorded his seventh double-double of the season by halftime, and finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds to help lead Morgan State to a 75-62 home victory. Aric Brooks matched his season-high by scoring 17 points, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line with four assists.
•  The last time Howard defeated the Bears was on February 27, 2006. Joseph McLean posted a game-high 22 points but Morgan State was unable to get the win against Howard at Burr Gymnasium on Monday night. The Bison ran away with a 72-59 victory. HU finished the game with four players scoring in double-figures. Eugene Myatt poured in 19 points with a team-high seven rebounds, while Darryl Hudson scored 16 (10-10 FT).
•  Howard has lost nine of its last 10 games … the win was against South Carolina State where they pulled out an 82-76  road victory.
•  Senior guard Simuel Frazier is among the league leaders in the assists department. Frazier currently ranks No. 9  by averaging 3.3 assists per game and No 12 in assist/turnover ratio (0.9).
•  Howard is among the league leaders in free throw percentage (ranked No. 5 – 67.3 ppg) and rebounding defense (No. 5 – 35.8/g).
MSU will face the MD-Eastern Shore Hawks at Hill Field House on Saturday, February 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
