FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION INDEPENDENT PLAYERS OF THE WEEK NAMED

Notre Dame running back Tarean Folston, Notre Dame defensive lineman Kona Schwenke and Navy kick returner Marcus Thomas have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Nov. 2.  Folston is cited on Offense, Schwenke is honored on Defense, and Thomas is recognized on Special Teams.  All three players are first-time honorees.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Notre Dame RB Tarean Folston

A freshman from Cocoa, Fla., Folston ran for a career-best 140 yards and the game-winning touchdown—the first score of his career—in Notre Dame’s 38-34 home win over Navy.  Folston became the first Irish freshman running back to eclipse 100 yards since Robert Hughes against Stanford in 2007; he rushed for the most yards by an Irish freshman running back since Julius Jones ran for 146 yards v. Navy in 1999.  Folston ended the day just eight yards shy of the Notre Dame freshman rushing record held by Jerome Heavens, who ran for 148 yards against Georgia Tech in 1975.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Notre Dame DL Kona Schwenke

A senior from Hauula, Hawaii, Schwenke filled in for an injured Louis Nix III and collected a career-best 11 tackles, including 10 in the first half, in Notre Dame’s 38-34 victory over Navy.  Schwenke, who ended up having to leave the game with a second half-injury, had recorded a total of 15 tackles over his first 27 career games before emerging against the Midshipmen and their productive option attack.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Navy KR Marcus Thomas

A senior from Baton Rouge, La., Thomas returned five kickoffs for 137 yards (27.4 yard average) in a 38-34 loss at Notre Dame.  Thomas’ last return was a 49-yard run-back to midfield which positioned the Midshipmen for their final drive with 3:47 to play.  Thomas ended the day with 162 all-purpose yards, as he also caught two passes for 25 yards.
