Kicking It Off: Maryland improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2001 with a 32-21 win over Connecticut, while the Huskies fell to 0-2. The Terps are now 2-1 all-time against UConn. The Terps totaled 501 yards of total offense. It is the third time in as many games this season that the Terps have eclipsed the 500-yard mark.
Brown Races for No. 10: Quarterback C.J. Brown kept the ball on a zone-read and raced up the middle for a 41-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven early in the second quarter. For Brown, it is his fifth rushing touchdown of the season tying his season high from 2011 and marks his 10th career rushing touchdown.
Brown on the Ground: Quarterback C.J. Brown finished with 122 rushing yards, the seventh-highest total in school history. Brown now has five career 100-yard games and has five of the top 12 rushing performances by a quarterback in school history. Brown went for 105 yards in the season opener against FIU.
Run/Pass Threat: With 277 yards through the air and 122 yards on the ground, quarterback C.J. Brown threw for over 275 yards and rushed for over 100 for the second time this season. Prior to this season, the last time a Maryland quarterback accomplished that feat was Shawn Hill against Duke on Oct. 20, 2011 (323 passing, 105 rushing). Against FIU, Brown passed for 281 and rushed for 105.
Diggs Over 100: For the third straight game, wide receiver Stefon Diggs went over 100 yards receiving. The sophomore finished with 110 yards on five catches. Diggs now has five career 100-yard receiving games. The sophomore scored his third touchdown of the season in the third quarter and now has recorded a receiving touchdown in five of his past seven games dating back to last season.
Meet at the Quarterback: Linebacker Marcus Whitfield tallied two first-half sacks. Whitfield’s two sacks are a career best. It is the second time this season a Terrapin has tallied two or more sacks in a game. Defensive lineman Andre Monroe had two sacks against Old Dominion one week ago.
Lock Down: Defensive back Dexter McDougle finished with a personal-best two interceptions. His second interception he returned for 49 yards for a touchdown becoming the first Terp to return an interception for a touchdown since A.J. Hendy took one back 32 yards against NC State on Nov. 26, 2011. As a team, it was the Terps sixth interception of the season topping last season’s total of four.
Defensive Notes: The Terps turned the ball over four times, but only allowed Connecticut to score three points off of those four turnovers … linebacker Cole Farrand totaled a career-high 11 tackles to lead the Terps … in addition to Whitfield’s two sacks, linebacker Yannick Cudjoe-Virgil tallied a personal-best 2.5 sacks … defensive back Dexter McDougle had a team-high seven solo tackles.
