Wednesday Morning’s Crabs and Beer

July 09, 2008 | Glenn Clark

This could get really ugly. The Orioles really haven’t had starting pitching all season, but a greatly overachieving bullpen has held them together. With the bullpen diminishing by the day; and a number of trades likely-the Orioles could be headed to a VERY bad end to the season. I mean, I’m talking about a potential 4-32 end to the season-especially if some of their character guys are dealt.

The important thing to remember is that it is OKAY if the Orioles struggle mightily in the 2nd half. It is OKAY if the Orioles finish in 5th place. It is OKAY if the Orioles battle the Royals for the worst record in the American League. It is OKAY if the Orioles don’t give us the good feelings in the 2nd half that they gave us early on.

It is OKAY……… long as they continue on the path to rebuilding.

As long as the Orioles continue to acquire young players who can be part of the rebuilding path in Baltimore; the likely demise of the ’08 Orioles is not only OKAY; it is what we should expect. I know I previously predicted that the Orioles wouldn’t get back over .500 after May 31; but after watching last night’s game-I now think the Orioles have reached the point where they won’t get back over .500 after July 8. They just don’t have the horses at this point.

You’re going to be doing some yelling and screaming over the next few weeks. But as long as Andy MacPhail continues down the path to rebuilding; remember-everything is OKAY.

Let’s see what everyone else has to say…

-The Adam Loewen situation is EXTREMELY unfortunate. It is almost assuredly to the point that we will never see Adam make an impact as a Major League pitcher. Adam will have to REALLY show courage to work through this, but I don’t know he will ever be effective enough to make the return.

-I do not believe Brett Favre will wear a jersey other than that of the Green Bay Packers next season. The Packers may not want Brett just as badly as Peter King says; but I also don’t think Brett wants to play so badly that he will be willing to go somewhere else. I believe that Brett wants to play; but the desire to learn a new area, a new system, a new staff, and a new group of teammates likely does not burn inside the same way his passion to play does. If the Packers pass on him, I imagine he will remain retired. And just as a note-Bill Williamson, who wrote the story that got everyone worked up about the Favre to Baltimore possibilities-declined a request to join us on WNST and discuss the possibility any further.

-With no offense to Pete Prisco, who does a nice job of covering the NFL; I actually think Joe Flacco has a better chance of starting Week 1 than Kyle Boller.

-Congratulations to Crystal Palace USA for a nice run in the U.S. Open Cup. Get out and see some professional soccer when you get the chance.

-Brooks Robinson will clearly get my vote in the 2nd round of the King of Baltimore Sports contest. Quite simply-during his time in Baltimore-Brooks was a 15 time All-Star over 23 seasons, won 16 Gold Gloves, an AL MVP Award, 2 world series titles, 4 AL Pennants, and even an All-Star Game MVP. On the flipside, Wes Unseld played just 5 seasons in Baltimore-posting 4 All-Star appearances, an MVP, and a Rookie of the Year honor.

Talk to you soon.
