Towson Senior Robert Nwankwo Named To CAA All-Defensive Team
Sophomore Erique Gumbs Selected to CAA All-Academic Second Team
RICHMOND, Va. – Towson University men’s basketball senior Robert Nwankwo has been selected to the Colonial Athletic Association’s All-Defensive Team, it was announced Thursday evening at the annual awards banquet in Richmond, Va. on the eve of the opening round of the league tournament.
Tiger forward Erique Gumbs was also recognized as the sophomore was selected for the CAA All-Academic second team.
Nwankwo, who was also selected to the CAA All-Defensive Team as a junior in 2010, ranks third in the CAA and 22nd nationally averaging 2.5 blocks per game. The 6-9 senior registered a season-high six blocked shots at Georgia State on January 14 and he has posted four or more blocks in a game on seven occasions.
For his career, Nwankwo ranks third all-time at Towson and seventh in CAA history with 222 rejections. The forward trails former Tiger Pat McKinley (’77) by just seven blocks for second place.
Nwankwo also ranks fourth in the league and 24th in the country averaging 9.8 rebounds per game. The senior has led the Tigers in rebounding in all but four games this season. His 786 career rebounds ranks fifth all-time at Towson.
Gumbs was honored for his outstanding effort in the classroom this past year. Gumbs, a redshirt sophomore, has maintained a G.P.A over 3.0 in psychology while starting 21 games for the Tigers and competing in all 31 contests.
The Tigers will open play in the CAA Tournament on Friday, taking on the Delaware Blue Hens in the opening around at 2:30 p.m. All first round games will be web streamed live via the CAA website.
