Towson University football is on the rise

August 24, 2007 | Drew Forrester

This time next Thursday, we’ll all be at Towson’s Johnny Unitas Stadium to see the Tigers take on Central Connecticut State in the 2007 college football opener for Gordy Combs and Company.

As most of you reading this are aware, WNST is the flagship radio station for Towson University this season (and the two thereafter) and we are very excited about our new relationship with the school and the football program.  You might recall that last January we hosted a “Purple Playoff Rally” at the Towson Center that coincided with a Towson-George Mason basketball game.  Five members of the Ravens came out that night to shoot foul shots at halftime and raise money for the Kennedy Krieger Autism Center.  That night, we saw first hand how exciting the college sports environment can be if the game is exciting and the promotional event captivates the audience.

We hope to accomplish the same thing next Thursday, August 30 at the Towson-Central Connecticut St. game.

Tailgating is a major theme of Towson University football this season and we’ll have our very own WNST tailgate tent in lot #21 (near the Towson Center) for all five Tigers home games this season.

We’d love for all of you to make an effort to come out to next Thursday’s opener.  There’s a 60% off ticket coupon for the game on our web-site and our tailgate tent will have plenty of free food and drinks, so arrive by 6pm and join in the fun with me and a bunch of WNST staffers and on-air personnel.

Baltimore is unique in that we all consider our great city a “major league sports town”, yet we’ve never really had a “big-time” college football program in Baltimore that gets everyone in town all jazzed up throughout the fall and early winter.  Well, the Towson Tigers are trying to fill that void now, with some fresh marketing concepts, an exciting team and a willingness to try new things to make the games enjoyable for families, young adults and students alike.

You’ll be hearing plenty about the home opener throughout next week on WNST.  But what I’d like you to do right now is circle August 30 on your calendar and make it a point to come out with us next Thursday for the first game of the season.  Let’s tailgate, watch some good football and help Towson University usher in a new era of college football that can make Baltimore proud.

Don’t forget, there’s a 60% off coupon at – use it for next Thursday’s home game!
