January 10, 2010 |

It is not common to see a victory when only five players score in a game, but the UMBC women’s basketball team picked up their first conference victory in Orono, Maine against the Maine Black Bears by having just that.

Senior guard Carlee Cassidy led the team with game highs in points with 19, and rebounds with 11. She shot 54.7% from the field off an 8-15 performance with two three-pointers.

Sophomore’s Michelle Kurowski and Erin Brown added 17 and 15 point, respectively, in the victory. Brown also had seven rebounds and a team high three three-pointers.

The only other Retriever to score were Topé Obajolu, who scored six points with five rebounds, and Katie Brooks, who came off the bench with Brown to score four points and give out four rebounds while only turning the ball over one time in 30 minutes.

The team shot 42.6% from the field and made seven three-pointers but the defense held Maine in check to lead them to victory. Maine shot just 32.7% from the field, turned the ball over 16 times, and only made four three-pointers. Other than Kristen Baker who scored 17 points for Maine, the other six Black Bears were held to just 35 points.
