UMBC’s Cook, Stony Brook’s Warney Net First America East Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors of 2012-13 Season
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 2012-13 America East men’s basketball season got underway over the weekend and standout performances have earned UMBC’s Ryan Cook and Stony Brook’s Jameel Warney the conference’s first weekly honors of the season.
Cook picked up Player of the Week honors after registering his second career double-double in the Retrievers’ lone game of the week, while Warney had two impressive games to earn Rookie of the Week accolades. The first awards of the 2012-13 season were announced Monday afternoon.
Cook (Laurel, Md.) tied his career high with 28 points and added 11 rebounds in UMBC’s 80-75 loss at Penn Friday. The senior guard shot 10-of-19 from the floor and helped UMBC build a 21-point first-half lead on the Quakers. Cook’s double-double, the second of his career, is his second consecutive double-double as he finished the 2011-12 season with 15 points and 10 rebounds vs. Binghamton in the America East tournament last year.
Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) had a solid debut over the weekend as he averaged 12.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in two Stony Brook wins. The freshman forward had eight points and five boards in a road win at Marist Friday and then turned in a 16-point, nine-rebound performance vs. Mount Ida on Sunday. Warney shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor against the Mustangs and shot 78 percent (11-for-14) for the week.
