Cambridge, Mass. – For the a school record-setting fifth time, UMBC freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) has been named America East Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today.
Elliott surpassed Chauncey Gilliam, who earned four league first-year accolades in 2009-10.
The first-year Retriever tied his season high with 26 points vs. UMass Lowell on Saturday. He also led the Retrievers with 21 points in the 68-57 victory over UNH three days earlier. Elliott is averaging 22.7 points per game and has scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games. He converted 15-of-17 free throw attempts in the two contests this week.
The 6’0, 180-lb. point guard has vaulted up to third in the conference in scoring at 15.0 points per game and is now averaging 15.7 points per game (2nd) and 4.5 rebounds per game (17th) in America East contests. He is fourth in AE in assists per game (3.6), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0) eighth in field goal percentage (45.1%) and ninth in steals per game (1.3).
The Baltimore native is composing one of the top freshman seasons in school history. He needs just three rebounds to become the fourth UMBC Division I player to amass at least 300 points and 100 rebounds in his freshman campaign. He is 14 assists and three rebounds shy of becoming the first Retriever to record 300 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists in his initial season.
Elliott’s 359 points is ninth amongst all UMBC freshmen in single-season scoring with at least six games left on the schedule.
UMBC completes a three-game homestand by facing defending league champion Albany on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
