Cambridge, Mass.- For the third time this season, UMBC freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) has been named America East Conference Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week.

Elliott, who is seventh in the league in scoring with 14.3 points per game, averaged 17.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Retrievers. He amassed 21 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor and a season-high 4 (of 5) treys, in the 63-48 victory over Navy on Dec. 30.

Elliott led UMBC with 14 points and tied his season high with six assists at UMass Lowell on Jan. 5.

For the week, Elliott hit 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field and 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from behind the arc. He is eighth in America East in field goal percentage at 47.1 percent.

Elliott’s three rookie honors to date are just one shy of former Retriever Chauncey Gilliam, who earned the weekly award four times in the 2008-09 campaign. He became the second UMBC freshman to amass 200 points in his first 14 games – Peter Mulligan totaled 201 in the 2000-01 season, while Elliott sits right at 200 points prior to the halfway point of the season.
