UMBC looks for 2-1 start Thursday at American

Non-conference rivals UMBC and American will meet for the seventh consecutive year as the Retrievers and Eagles get together at Bender Arena on Thursday, Nov. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. tip. The game will be televised regionally  by Comcast SportsNet.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: Malik Garner shattered his career-highwith 32 points and freshman guard Rodney Elliott hit a late 25-footer to send the game to overtime and the Retrieversprevailed, 84-79, in overtime over Eastern (Pa.) at the RACArena on Monday evening. The victory evened UMBC’s earlyseason slate at 1-1 after a setback at Arizona State (96-61)on Nov. 8.

EAGLE UPDATE: American is coming off an impressive showing in its season-opener at George Mason, holding a lead in Fairfax, Va., into the final fi ve minutes before a late Patriotcomeback edged AU, 63-60 on Nov. 8. The Eagles were led by sophomore guard Jesse Reed who scored a team high 15 points. The season-opener also marked the first game for juniortransfer from Stephen F. Austin State, Darius Gardner.The point guard scored 14 points and dished out a game-high six assists without recording a turnover.

WHO’S UP NEXT: UMBC returns to the RAC Arena on Sunday, Nov. 17 when they welcome in-state rival Mount St. Mary’s. Tip-off time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
