UMBC will compete in its second Sears Bracket Buster series on Saturday, Feb. 18 when the Retrievers take on host Canisius at the Koessler Athletic Center. Tip-off time is set for 2:00 p.m.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: After knocking on the door through the entire month of February, the Retrievers broke through on Feb. 15, snapping a seven-game slide with a 70-56 win at Binghamton. The defensive posture is beginning to ramp up, as UMBC (4-22, 3-11) has held its last two foes to 40 percent or poorer shooting from the field. Soph. forward Chase Plummer added to his personal best streak, scoring in double figures (15 pts.) for the ninth consecutive game vs. Binghamton.
GOLDEN GRIFFIN UPDATE: Also a young team, Canisius suffered its tenth consecutive loss on Feb. 15, falling, 60-57, in overtime at MAAC rival Niagara. Junior guard Alshwan Hymes led the Griffs with 19 points, hitting five of six field goals from behind the arc. Classmate and backcourt partner junior guard Harold Washington paces Canisius with 16.5 points per game and also leads the squad with 74 assists. Canisius defeated Binghamton, 75-66 at the Koessler Center back on Dec. 28, the same night that UMBC fell at Niagara, 92-75.
Who’s Up Next: UMBC plays its final home game of the 2011-12 season when the Retrievers return to league play and host Boston Univ. at the RAC Arena on Wed., Feb. 22. Post Jake Wasco, the team’s lone senior, will be honored in pregame ceremonies.
