If Indy wins on Sunday…who cares? Really?

February 04, 2010 |

At some point in Thursday’s edition of The Comcast Morning Show, Nestor, Glenn and I got into a discussion about Sunday’s upcoming Super Bowl and the obvious issue of “who to root for” in the big game.

My response?  I honestly don’t care who wins.

I don’t.  Really.

E-mails flooded my inbox and a couple of people, mainly someone named “Ed” and “Phil in Owings Mills” took me to task for saying that I don’t care who wins on Sunday “just to stir things up”.

Here’s an excerpt from Phil’s tongue-lashing:

I’m so sick of hearing you do things for ratings (and you don’t have any last I checked) and just to get people to react.  You just say things like that today to stir things up.  Try to be a little less obvious next time.

I’ll be happy to stress it again, Phil, and to anyone else that cares.

I. Do. Not. Care. Who. Wins. On. Sunday.

If New Orleans wins, that’s terrific.

If Indianapolis wins, good for them.

That’s not a “pot stirring attempt”, a “ratings driver” or any other silly suggestion people might come up with in their spare time.

I just don’t care who wins.

I hope it’s a good game…a close game…and that’s that.

Other than having to deal with my buddy Merton from Indianapolis for a few minutes on Monday morning, there’s probably not going to be a moment where the Colts winning bothers me — if they do.

It just doesn’t matter to me anymore.

If I can sit there and watch Peyton Manning and Company methodically dismiss the Ravens on January 16 from the press box in Indy, I can definitely say watching them beat the Saints on Sunday (which I think they will, for the record) won’t be any more hurtful than having our team’s season end to them three weeks ago.

I’m a Baltimore guy, born and raised.  There’s no need for me to go into the story about going to games with my dad in the 1970′s and 1980′s because I’ve told that story more times than I’ve told the story about how the Orioles took my season media credential away from me because I campaigned for the return of “BALTIMORE” on the road jerseys too long and too hard.

I loved the Baltimore Colts.

But all of that animosity about Indianapolis is gone.  Vanished.  It’s almost like I moved it out in the middle of the night…no pun intended.

If the Colts win on Sunday, I’ll wake up on Monday and do sports talk and no one in town — in Baltimore that is — will have their life altered one iota just because Peyton Manning gets to lift the Vince Lombardi trophy again.

That’s the truth.

And if the Saints win, the same thing applies.

My team got eliminated last month.

That’s all I care about now.

And my team is called the Baltimore RAVENS…not the Baltimore COLTS.
