Derek's Bio
Born in Baltimore, MD, and raised and currently residing in the oasis of Pasadena, Derek has been a lifelong fan of Charm City sports. Before he could walk, he was propping himself up against the television set with one hand, tiny bat in the other, trying to emulate the swing of Eddie Murray. Despite their best efforts to rip the love from his heart, Derek still dreams of the day when the Orioles are no longer the laughing stock of the American League East, and the MLB in general. Growing up a fan of football, but with an allegiance to no team in particular, Derek had no problem latching onto the Ravens from the day he heard they were on the way. He spends his days as an environmental scientist, but by night, Derek shares his thoughts at his website, B'More Birds' Nest (www.bmorebirdsnest.com), on Twitter (@bmorebirdsnest), and here at WNST.net.

“If you don’t expect too much from me, you might not be let down” One simple lyric from a nearly 20-year old rock song can sum up the way many Ravens fans are feeling these days. We Baltimoreans relish the role of the underdog, and we feel most comfortable when our teams do the ... Read More »
The United States Men’s National Soccer Team had one of the most exciting finishes you’ll ever see in sport yesterday, scoring in stoppage time to win 1-0 and gain themselves a berth in the knockout stages of the 2010 World Cup. Many, many Americans are, like me, absolutely ecstatic about the result, and are eager to ... Read More »
Nestor announced this morning the date of “Free the Birds” 2010. May 17, vs. Kansas City, 7:05 start This is the third Free the Birds event, and I attended each of the first two. The first, on September 21, 2006, was a resounding success, was mentioned by many media outlets across the country, and quite honestly, ... Read More »
Last Saturday I attended my first NCAA men’s lacrosse game of the 2010 season (Thanks to ESPN Zone Baltimore for the free tickets!) Watching UMBC take on Maryland, I didn’t really care who won, I just wanted to see a competitive game. I’m a UMBC alum, but a fan of all things Terps (as ... Read More »
A certain hated University down in North Carolina is sending two of their squads north to Maryland in the coming days. I don’t know about you, but I taste blood in the water. Wednesday night at the Comcast Center, the 22nd-ranked Maryland Men’s basketball team takes on the 4th-ranked Duke Blue Devils. On Saturday at M&T ... Read More »
Fortunately, we’ve had the pleasure around here of not having to start thinking about the next year’s draft until late January the past two seasons (unlike dismal 2007, where we started thinking draft around November-ish). Admittedly, I take a very unscientific approach to my mock drafts. I’m the first to admit that the ... Read More »
We’re all very familiar by now with the “it’s not a low blow, just a fact,” catch phrase of Drew Forrester. Drew borrowed it from Ian Eagle (I believe?) of CBS, who, while covering a Ravens game a few seasons back, made a pointed remark when the cameras were showing an overhead shot of ... Read More »
Another season, another trip to face the AFC South winners, holders of the #1 overall seed in the AFC. Can the Ravens repeat the huge upset they pulled last year in Nashville against the Titans? Methinks yes. Let’s look at the reasons why… 1. The Colts’ regular season dominance will again hurt ... Read More »
Wes “Tiny Tim” Welker hobbled out to midfield with the captains for the coin toss. Matt Slater stopped Jalen Parmele in his tracks at the Ravens’ 17 yard line on the opening kickoff. Those two moments, both occurring prior to about 1:05 PM Eastern Time, would be the last semblance of good feelings for every chowdah-swilling Masshole ... Read More »
(You know, like LOLCATS…) My full game recap is in the works, but in the meantime, let’s have some fun at the Patriots’ expense, shall we? Thanks to the Baltimore Sun for all the pics. ... Read More »
