Derek's Bio
Born in Baltimore, MD, and raised and currently residing in the oasis of Pasadena, Derek has been a lifelong fan of Charm City sports. Before he could walk, he was propping himself up against the television set with one hand, tiny bat in the other, trying to emulate the swing of Eddie Murray. Despite their best efforts to rip the love from his heart, Derek still dreams of the day when the Orioles are no longer the laughing stock of the American League East, and the MLB in general. Growing up a fan of football, but with an allegiance to no team in particular, Derek had no problem latching onto the Ravens from the day he heard they were on the way. He spends his days as an environmental scientist, but by night, Derek shares his thoughts at his website, B'More Birds' Nest (www.bmorebirdsnest.com), and now here at WNST.net.

The Weekly Honor’s namesake again lived up to his billing, gashing the Steelers’ (then) #1 rush defense for 141 yards on 30 carries. He had only 1 catch for 14 yards though, and his fumble on the play after fellow 2008 second-round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall had done the same really hurt the Ravens. Still, ... Read More »
Played Like a Raven - Dominique Foxworth Sure, Natty Joe was the easy choice. In setting career highs for QB rating and touchdown passes, he played like a Raven on Sunday, no doubt. However, I thought I’d go ahead and recognize Dom Fox here, considering how often this space has been used to skewer ... Read More »
Was there any doubt that we would go back to “Play Like a Ray Rice” this week? Mighty Mouse could have been in Jamal Lewis/Adrian Peterson territory, had he played the entire game. Twenty-seven racked up 219 yards on 17 touches, a ridiculous 12.9 yards per. He unfortunately fumbled in the red ... Read More »
Well, it appears as if, by renaming this feature, “Play Like Ray Rice,” we served to Jinx Mighty Mouse, as he failed to break the 100-yards from scrimmage mark for the first time since Week 3. Rice managed just 54 yards rushing and 17 receiving. As such, consider this the “further notice” that ... Read More »
Time to change things up a bit around here. Lest Mighty Mouse Ray Rice continue to win the “Play Like a Raven” award every week from here on out, I thought it was best to just rename the thing in his honor. As such, “Play Like Ray Rice,” will be given out after ... Read More »
Played Like a Raven - Michael Oher and Jared Gaither Remember the Sunday Night game in Week 10, when Cris Collinsworth and Al Michaels would NOT SHUT UP about Colts’ defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis? It was like they had “Favre-cams” on those two, showing us all the ways that they were wreaking ... Read More »
Played Like a Raven - Dawan Landry The fourth year safety has been having a very lackluster year, and has very obviously not been the player that he was prior to sustaining a spinal cord concussion last season. However, on Monday night, Dawan Landry showed glimpses that just maybe he is returning, slowly but surely, ... Read More »
Played Like a Raven - Ray Rice After forcing myself to sit through the game again, I feel a little better about giving this week’s honors to Ray Rice. Not only was he the only member of the Ravens’ offense to board the plane for Cincinnati, but he once again did everything that was asked ... Read More »
Played Like a Raven - Jarret Johnson Double J got the game started off right with his punishing sack of Kyle Orton, and that hit set the tone for the entire game. B’More was clearly the more physical team all afternoon, and #95 made sure that the donkeys were well aware of that fact from ... Read More »
With the Ravens’ pass defense currently floundering near the bottom of the league (23rd), it might be time for head coach John Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Greg Mattison to consider some personnel changes. Since the big play has been the downfall of this team on defense all season (the team has surrendered 6 pass ... Read More »
