The UMBC women’s basketball team broke a four game home skid as they shut down the opposing Maine, 57-45, in a game delayed one day.
While the game was supposed to be played on Saturday, the snow storm pushed the tip-off a day later and the team hit on all cylinders with the extra time to prepare.
Sophomore center Tope Obajolu and sophomore point guard Katie Brooks each scored 16 points in the contest. Obajolu has been on fire in conference play and shot 66.6% from the field, 100% from the free throw line, and swatted in four blocks.
Brooks worked her way back into the starting lineup, went 5-of-8 from the field and chipped in two three-pointers in the game. She also dished out four assists.
Senior guard Carlee Cassidy scored 15 points, led the team with three threes and grabbed four rebounds.
While UMBC led from the tip to the final buzzer but could not quite pull away until midway through the second half. They led by five points in the first half on two occasions, but despite shooting just 28.0%, the Black Bears cut the lead to just four at the break.
They shot better in the second half, but so did UMBC. Maine increased their 28.0% shooting mark in the first half to 35.7% in the second half, but UMBC went from 42.9% to 57.9%.
The UMBC defense held Maine to just 32.1% in the game and just 7.1% from three point range as they only managed to make one in the game.
UMBC also shot 100% from the free throw line, making all 11 of their attempts.
