Drew's Bio
The only person in the history of Baltimore sports-talk to attend Game 2 of the 1983 World Series, shoot 64 in golf (twice) and sit next to Dave Grohl on a flight from Baltimore to Cleveland (1997), Drew is the host of The Comcast Morning Show from 6am-10am Monday through Friday. Topics routinely range from the Ravens, Terps and the Orioles and their decision to not improve the team for the (insert number of years here) consecutive season. His favorite movie is "Wiggle Bay" and his favorite member of Little Einstein's is June. Drew's son Ethan said, "Daddy, why do the Flyers stink so bad?" when he was only 8 days old. "Gotta start 'em young," the proud papa said that night.

In the hypothetical world of “would it?”, I have to wonder today what immediate impact last night’s O’s win over Boston would have on the team’s attendance at OPACY.
Unfortunately, we’re not going to find out, because immediately following today’s game - as luck would have it, I suppose - the Birds will jet to the west coast to start a 4-game series in Anaheim.
Too bad.
Because regardless of what happens today when the Sox and O’s finish their 3-gamer at Fenway Park Mid-Atlantic, I would be extremely curious to see if an attendance spike occurred this weekend if, say, the O’s were HOSTING the Angels instead of playing them in the PDT zone.
I don’t know the answer. No one does, of course. Would people come out this weekend, suddenly galvanized by that front-page, historic comeback of Tuesday night? Or, by Friday afternoon, would Tuesday’s game be nothing more than a memorable win but nothing worth getting overly excited about?
I wonder.
My GUESS is that it wouldn’t matter much. It’s one win out of the expected/projected 70 or so they’re going to have in ‘09. Would it be any different if the O’s would have won 13-1? I don’t know the answer to that, either.
But there’s one thing for certain. Unless the Orioles play the Red Sox or Yankees, there’s not much energy in the city for baseball anymore.
Last night’s win was high-octane fueled by the fact it came against the team we’re the most jealous of — the Boston Red Sox. Had Tuesday’s triumph been against Cleveland or Minnesota or Texas, I doubt it would have meant as much to the fans. Or, the team, for that matter. Against Texas, it would have been a GREAT win for the guys. Against the Red Sox, it’s a punch in the mouth to one of the villains of sport — and a franchise we’re insanely envious of here in Baltimore because they are the model we so want to resemble. Fans in the seats, hats and shirts everywhere in town, and World Series banners flying — from THIS decade.
We beat the Big Brother last night.
It was awesome.
I wish things were different and we had a weekend homestand to gauge whether or not folks in town would come out to show their excitement and appreciation.
Then again, I probably wouldn’t like what I’d see. Unless the Yankees were in town.

Props on “not betting on the O’s putting in a decent effort these next two games”…just sayin. (DF: Huh? Sometimes I wonder if you’re not 7 and playing with mommy and daddy’s computer when they’re watching The Flintstones. About twice a week I get something from you that is either incomplete or incoherent. Is summer camp off this week?)

If it counts for anything, I considered leaving work early today to go see Bergesen try and win the series. If it weren’t a day game, I’d certainly be going.

It’s a good question. They did draw 110,000 last weekend against the worst team in baseball, so to say that it’s just the Yankees and Red Sox may not be completely accurate. But you’re right, it’s not the same energy.
And you got me. I AM jealous. To have what they have, the following, the enthusiasm, the summer nights of meaningful baseball, that’s the stuff, man.
You know the feeling you get on Ravens’ gameday? People out on Sunday morning in their 52 jerseys, scrambling to get to their TVs by 1:00, the definite buzz about town. Imagine that all summer. This town can’t. They can’t because they’ve forgotten how great it was.
There’s absolutely nothing like a pennant race. And until this town feels one of those again, you’re probably right- even historic wins like last night won’t fill that beautiful ballpark.
Still, it’s energizing for us die hards, even if just for today’s matinee. They could sure use a win to back it up.

Drew,
Any chance that the O’s play inspired baseball against the Red Sox and win the next 2 games at home to help the cause instead of getting shutout 4-0???? (DF: Any chance? Sure. Will they? I wouldn’t bet it that way.)
You never seem to remember your own words… (DF: Hey dummy…you didn’t RE-PRINT my own words. I would have remembered THIS post. You wrote something about “putting in a decent effort…” — I wouldn’t have BET them to win last night and I wouldn’t bet them to win today either. And I wouldn’t have bet them on Monday to win — and I would have WON that wager. You are in Rick-ville now…starting to babble incoherently, trying to make a point, with nothing to add really…but that doesn’t stop you from babbling anyway.)

I wonder if MASN will add this game to it’s “Orioles Classics” archives, only time will tell. But until then, let the countdown continue..t-minus 27 days until Ravens training camp.

Of course you would want that…It would give you something negative to talk about instead of having to dig at the bottom of the negative barrel and comment on how \non-exciting\ Trembley’s press conference was….haha…Even after a momentous win, Ole’ Drew managaes to find something to stir the few disgruntled WNST Zombie listeners into a negative frenzy. Is this a buisness model decision to go negative against the O’s??? Those who didnt, got the axe, or that could have been tightening of the ole’ money belt as well. \I grew up, lived and died O’s…blah blah blah.\ \Ya know, Trembely could have been a little more exciting after a momentous win.\ Give it a rest…You guys are the furthest away from balanced coverage on the O’s…You kiss the Ravens *** and despise the O’s…

To add…Yes you comment how great a win, but your few positive comments are always followed up with your Blasts of Negativety..Completely downplaying the win.

Blowing a 5-1 lead to the Red Sox Nation and now playing extra frames on Wednesday…..Tuesday’s dramatic comeback win means nothing if the O’s squander the rubber game……Go Orioles—BEAT THE NATION!!!!

Actually, last night’s, game like so many others in recent memory, was more typical than the anomaly of Tuesday night’s record breaker that sent Nestor into a lather because Trembly didn’t sound excited about it. Trembly knows better than anyone else what he’s working with and there’s very little room for…..excitement!
