At 11:12 pm (according to my microwave clock) Al Michaels just said “if the Ravens win at Oakland, they’re in.” However, CBSsports.com and nfl.com both say that Denver and the Jets control their own destiny. Which is it?
The AFC playoff picture is as complex as we’ve ever seen, but considering the Monday Night game (Bears/Vikings) is an NFC match-up, as is tonights Dallas/Washington game, the AFC playoff picture, heading into week 17, has been set since about 7:20. The fact that four hours later the NFL hasn’t clearly laid out the scenerios for next week is a gaffe we don’t often see this league make.

It’s because the tiebreaker of common opponents does not kick in until the Ravens play the Raiders (this is because to use the common opponents tiebreaker, there must be a certain number of teams in common, I think 4). So when Raven’s play the Raider and assumingly win, then the common opponents tiebreaker kicks in and Ravens would have it over the Broncos. So yes technically if the season ended today the Broncos would be in but once we play and beat Oakland they won’t be. Crazy. This explains it better.
