Look Out Gary Williams- Coach Frese Is Taking Over College Park

Who ever thought that the Women’s Basketball team would be taking over at College Park? I guess that’s what happens when the team wins 142 games in the last 6 yrs while dropping only 34. In addition- Head Coach Brenda Frese took a program in shambles– out recruited everyone– and became the 5th youngest coach to win a National Championship. She’s been on every newspaper, every tv station, and most importantly- been a topic of conversation all over College Park. You want proof? Check out the attendance at the Comcast Center for the NCAA tournament. It was most attended Rounds 1 and 2 of an NCAA Women’s Tournament EVER– and it was over EASTER weekend. Amazing….

I’d like to give former assitant Jeff Walz credit for his hard work also. Jeff recruited 7 days a week and was able to recruit the top point guard in the country (Kristy Tolliver), and 2 of the top “bigs” in the country (Crystal Langhorne and Laura Harper). Coach Walz worked so hard- that he was rewarded by getting the head coaching job at Louisville. Oh- by the way- Louisville is now in the Sweet 16. If they make it to the Championship game- they may face Maryland for the NCAA title.

The Women’s team is the toast of College Park. I’d pay to see them scrimmage the men’s team. The men’s team would win- but I’d love to see them score a few against Gary’s Guys.

Go Lady Terps!!

I am glad the program and their coach are getting the credit they deserve. I am also glad people are realizing that Gary isn’t the best coach in College Park anymore.

The level of success Coach Friese and the Lady Terps have had is to be expected right? They won a championship. But when you compare the aftermath of the titles it’s pretty sad. Also what is sad is the lame excuse of not wanting the one and done guys but still having a 0% graduation rate. What happened to the men’s program?

Gary has a lot of excuses about why this and that happened and why they can’t win. Brenda was pregnant with twins and didn’t miss a beat. Stop with the excuses gary your team just isn’t that good. The sooner you realize that then maybe you will be able to (hopefully) get proactive and make a real effort to improve your team. Then maybe you can hope to be as successful as the lady terps team. If you need help you might want to go ask Big Mama just how she does it. Maybe some of her ideas can help you even if her team is full of girls. It can’t hurt anything accept your pride.

Maybe he got complacent after the championship. Maybe he thought MD would have pick of the litter and people would come crawling to him to play for Maryland. Well they didn’t and they have been getting worse and worse every year.

"The worst thing that happened to you, that can happen to any fighter: you got civilized." First of two Rocky III quotes.

Maybe it’s like in Rocky III Mickey talking to Rocky about Clubber Lang "No, he ain’t just another fighter! This guy is a wrecking machine! And he’s hungry! Hell, you ain’t been hungry since you won that belt." I don’t know if thats the case but what have the men’s team done since they won the championship?

All I know is Coach Friese didn’t get complacent. Year in and year out they are a top team (legitimate top team not like when the Terps used to get ranked higher then they should be off of name recognition).

You can’t hang your hat on past achievements. That men’s championship was a few years ago. Deep down she is probably pissed she doesn’t have another National Championship. Also she will get one before gary. While gary is mad about a call a ref made that should have gone their way and changed their entire season for the worse. I truly believe these two coaches have different philosophies and goals. One coach recruits players to get in the mix and make things happen and stay competive. ACC tournament time comes around win a game and see what happens. Go to the NCAA tournament because he believes he belongs there and again see what happens. The other is very simple - A championship and nothing else with great players because they are a great team.

I know the men and ladies basketball programs are different animals but similiar. Coach Friese has taken advantage of something that Gary let slip through his fingers. The allure of playing for a champion and possibly being a part of another championship.

I have been telling people that the lady Terps are the most successful team in maryland over the last few years and I am pulling for them. I work with a guy who’s daughter plays for the team and that is just one more reason for me to pull for them. At least for me.

So in closing I would love if someone would get the oppertunity to ask gary the following question. How does it feel getting beat by a girl?
