Let’s Back Our Way Into the 15-7-0

Posted on 02 January 2012 by Glenn Clark

You know how it works. 15 positive football observations, 7 “not so” positive football observations and one “oh no” moment from outside the world of football.

(As a reminder, we don’t do Baltimore Ravens analysis here. We do PLENTY of that elsewhere. This is about the rest of the world of football.)

15 Positive Observations…

1. Matt Flynn may have just earned himself a boatload of money Sunday.

Perhaps Flynn’s success had much more to do with the Green Bay Packers’ scheme & wide receivers and even the Detroit Lions’ less than exceptional defense than the former LSU quarterback himself. But as he enters free agency, Flynn may have just made himself a viable option for teams that won’t enter 2012 with Andrew Luck on their roster.

Of course, 80 of his 480 yards and one of his five touchdowns came on this play to Ryan Grant. I’m pretty sure Ryan Chell could have made this throw…

The Packers can sit back and wait to find out who they’ll play in the divisional round while the Lions get to visit the Superdome next weekend. But I’d say it’s pretty much a toss-up as to who has the more difficult road ahead.

In an unrelated story, the Packers went with Pat Lee as their kick returner for the New Year’s Day game. He did something stupid…

And one more-here’s Packers LB Brad Jones handling a fan who ran out onto Lambeau Field…

2. The New England Patriots scored 49 unanswered points Sunday. I’m not really sure how to follow that up.

Much like the Fins a week earlier, the Buffalo Bills worked Charm City into a lather with hopes of ruining the Pats’ run to the Number 1 seed. Also much like the Fins, the Bills for some reason must have thought New England would quit when they fell behind early. But after spotting the Bills 21 points, the Patriots would go on to score the next 49.

But they can’t possibly win the AFC of course because their defense isn’t good enough.

Right.

You’ll see a lot of funny things in 2012. I’ll go ahead and guess that there won’t be many funnier than this Drayton Florence flop…

Also of note in this game was Bills WR Stevie Johnson, who exposed a “Happy New Year” message on an undershirt after scoring a touchdown…

It’s a shame Tom Brady didn’t have a “Happy 28 Point Beatdown” undershirt to respond with. For a semi-decent receiver, Johnson is about a full-fledged clown.

3. I still have no idea why he’s headed to Arkansas State, but Gus Malzahn made the Chick-Fil-A Bowl a lot of fun to watch.

Before departing his Offensive Coordinator gig at Auburn, Malzahn pulled out a bunch of tricks (including a Statue of Liberty Play of all things) to help beat Virginia in the Georgia Dome…

Elsewhere on New Year’s Eve Levi LaVallee and Robbie Maddison were doing extreme sport jumping of some sort on ESPN that may or may not have been amazing. None of us really know and none of us really bothered to watch. But technically it happened!

How did I spend my NYE you ask? At a place I can’t name because they aren’t a sponsor. They ARE however the home of Sweet Potato Tots and the “Billy Goat’s Gruff”…

It was a 14 out of 10.

4. There’s something about David Akers throwing a touchdown that I really enjoy.

I’d show you video of the play, but it’s not available on YouTube. Instead, those of you who REALLY wanna see it can check it out here and the rest of you can look at this picture of Elsa Hosk. We’ll all meet back at the local saloon.

The San Francisco 49ers clinched the #2 seed in the NFC thanks to their win over the St. Louis Rams. In Baltimore, we just want to say Thank You again. We can’t really say it enough.

The Rams will fire Steve Spagnuolo according to reports. Also according to reports, it will be cold this week.

5. Credit Gary Kubiak for not kicking an extra point Sunday. Now it’s time to go win a Wild Card playoff game.

The Houston Texans didn’t need to beat the Tennessee Titans Sunday for any tangible reason. They didn’t, thanks to Kubiak’s decision to go for 2 late (a decision that backfired after a Joel Dreessen false start and a snap sailed over the head of QB Jake Delhomme-who replaced a banged up T.J. Yates). Let’s take a look at the video board…

Earlier in the game, Bryan Braman made an awesome play…

The Texans host the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the postseason. If they win, the Texans visit M&T Bank Stadium in the divisional round. I would think most of us would be pretty happy with that matchup, especially considering the Steelers could be another option.

6. Texas A&M’s Ryan Swope is probably the best receiver you didn’t talk about this season.

Here’s video of the Aggies’ win over Northwestern in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. You voted it “the video I’m least likely to watch this week” in an informal poll I just took…

Here was Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald’s reaction when he found out I was going to show the highlights of the game…

7. For as much as we laughed at them this season, the Philadelphia Eagles look capable of being dangerous in 2012.

Of course, that’s the only if Michael Vick stays healthy…and we all know that’s a significant “if.”

The highlight of the day in Philly happened well before Philly kicked the tar out of the Washington Redskins. It happened when Skins OC Kyle Shanahan tried to pump his team up before the game. It was HILARIOUS…

Kyle Shanahan makes Cam Cameron look popular.

No Shame but plenty of blame to go ’round

Posted on 20 October 2009 by Chad Lamasa

With 2 seconds left on the clock Steve Hauschka missed a 44 yard field goal that would have won the game for the Ravens. Ever since the kick went wide everyone has been saying we should have kept Stover or Hauschka should be cut. Let’s calm down and look at this objectively now that some time has passed.

First of all it was a 44 yard kick. That’s not a gimme, even in a dome. Never mind the bad snap and set. Kickers are very habitual and even the slightest difference can mess them up. Remember last season when Stover missed several field goals early in the season? One of the reasons given was because the special teams coach wanted the ball snapped and set faster than what Stover had been used to.

Fans in this town are so fickle. When Stover was missing those kicks many people were saying it’s time for him to hang up his cleats. Now Hauschka has missed a couple and everyone wants Stover back. Well, he’s a Colt now, it’s not going to happen.

I understand Hauschka‘s job is to kick field goals, (I’ve heard that several times) but people make mistakes at their jobs. It happens.

In the other games this weekend seven kickers missed field goals. Feely (90%), Gostkowski (81%), Prater (75%), Kaeding (84%), Akers (75%) are among the names, should they all be replaced because they missed kicks? The Eagles fans probably think Akers should be, but that’s an entirely different issue.

John Carney (85%) the Saints kicker missed a PAT. Should he be replaced?

Hauschka (71%) is just below these guys.

Stover by comparison finished last season at 81%. In his second season in the league, which is what Hauschka is currently in, Stover only made 72% of his his FG attempts.  So let’s relax on trying to run Hauschka out of town.

Just like you can’t put Flacco in the Hall-of-Fame after only 25 games, you can’t judge Hauschka’s career yet.

Sure he didn’t win the game for us but he also didn’t lose the game for us single handed either.

It was a team loss. However, if pressed to pick one person to hang the loss on, it would be Frank Walker for those two (and third in two games) terrible pass interference calls late in the game. Or possibly Fabian Washington for playing so poorly, the Ravens thought Walker was a better option.

Our defense has been suspect all season. Especially at the corner back position. We just can’t match up with bigger more physical wide receivers.

The Ravens aren’t getting the same kind of pressure on the QB’s that they have in the past. That may be partly due to injuries, losing Bart Scott, or just a change of defensive philosophy. Ray is playing great but he can’t make every play himself. Plus I think he’s lost a step. Two years ago he would have had that interception.

The run defense is not what it was either. After going 39 games without allowing a 100+ yard rusher, it has now happened in back-to-back games. Adrian Peterson you expect that from, but not Cedric Benson.

I think the Ravens are better than their 3-3 record would suggest. The three losses have come by a combined 10 points. Offense is up across the league. Rule changes seem to favor offensive players, which may also be a contributing factor to the down turn by the defense.

The team has had a dramatic shift from an offense that did enough to get by and a stifling defense, to a high flying offense and an average defense. This is a bit of shock to the fans and, I would assume, the team as well.

Joe Flacco and Ray Rice are well on their way to being superstars in the league and among the elite player at their positions.

Jared Gaither should be back the week after the bye which will allow Michael Oher to move back to his natural position. Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason are solid receivers, not on the elite level but just below.
Lardarius Webb has been a nice addition, and David Tyree should help bolster the special teams as well.

The bye week is coming at the perfect time. This is when the team needs to step back and address these issues. With only three games left against teams with losing records, the schedule isn’t going to get any easier.

Week 12 Fantasy Start Rankings – Every Position

Posted on 20 November 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

Just for the sake of making everything easier, I’ve decided to post the week 12 Fantasy Start Rankings for all 6 positions in one place. It’s the same start rankings that you can find on the bottoms of each of the Positional Power Rankings for week 12. You can locate those power rankings by using the links at the bottom of this page too.

Listed below are the formulary start rankings for each of the 6 positions, with their formulary number listed in parentheses next to them. The formulary rankings are gotten using the “secret fantasy flavor formula”, it’s basically 2 parts player performance, 1 part defensive expectations against them this week, with a few variables thrown in for injuries and anomalies.

As news becomes available over the course of the weekend, I’ll make notes here too, so keep checking back. And at the end of the day, trust your gut, and have fun. That’s why we play the games after all anyway. And good luck to you this week as the playoffs approach.

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 12 Ks

Posted on 20 November 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

The return of Lawrence Tynes to the Giants this week, forced John Carney from the #1 spot in the rankings to being all the way out of them. From here out, whoever is kicking for the Giants should be a good option, but indications from Tom Coughlin are that he may go back and fourth with them. Garrett Hartley, although not in the rankings, is a worthwhile pickup and should be productive throughout the remaining season. Here are this week’s power rankings and match up previews, along with weekly start rankings at the bottom of the page.

Keep in mind that the power rankings, listed here, are based on year to date performance and not a reflection of your best options for week 12. Just below the power rankings are match up previews advising who should be better or worse than usual this week, based on their opponents. At the bottom, are the week 12 start rankings; that’s where you should look for help with your week 12 lineup decisions.

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 11 Ks

Posted on 13 November 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

And finally, in plenty of time to get your lineups in for tonight, here are the week 11 fantasy kicker rankings. Like defenses, kickers will frustrate you if you spent too early in the draft. Steady legends can fall off quickly, yet two guys grabbed from the scrap heap find themselves at the top of the yearly power rankings so far. The good news is, there are usually plenty to be found on the waiver wire, and if you play your match ups right, you can be successful rotating kickers weekly.

Remember that we’re listing 3 separate areas of evaluation in each Positional Power Rankings blog. The power rankings, listed first, are a year to date assessment of the top 20 at each position. Under those, are listings advising who should be a little bit better or worse than usual, based on their match up this week. And finally, at the bottom of each blog is the formulary start rankings, which is gotten using the “Secret Fantasy Flavor Formula”. It’s two parts year to date performance, one part opponents’ defensive performance, with adjustments for injuries, anomalies, and playing time changes.

Remember, none of this is gospel. If it were that easy, it wouldn’t be fun to play the games. With that said, we’re very proud of our track record so far, and suggest that you use these and as many other resources as you can find, in order to formulate your own opinions. After all, it’s you who has to live with your lineup decisions.

The Fantasy Flavor Positional Power Rankings – Week 10 Ks

Posted on 06 November 2008 by Thyrl Nelson

There’s never much to report when it comes to kickers, but this week did see the Saints bring in Garrett Holliday. He’s in for a tough match up this week with the Falcons, but plays for a high scoring team that plays in a dome, all positives for kickers. If you missed the boat on Connor Barth a couple of weeks ago, Holliday will ease that pain. If you’re using Barth currently, Holliday could ease that pain too.

It looks like Jay Feeley is still holding down duty for the Jets and John Carney for the Giants. And once again the once reliable Matt Stover and Adam Vinatieri look like shaky options.
