8th Biggest Story Of 2007 – The Death Of Sean Taylor

December 23, 2007 | WNST Interns

The day is still very fresh in my mind. However, I don’t think I’ll ever forget how I learned about the NFL’s latest tragedy.

On Tuesday, November 27, 2007, I began my day as I commonly do. A couple minutes after the stroke of 6am, I logged onto WNST’s website to listen to the Comcast Morning Show, with Drew Forrester. I soon learned this day would be much different than others.

As I was downing my first cup of coffee, I heard Drew deliver some shocking news ….. Sean Taylor had died as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting, a day earlier, at his home, near Miami. He was only 24 years old and a FORCE in the NFL. More importantly, he was a son, a brother and a DAD.

A day before, we learned Taylor had been shot in an alleged robbery attempt. Most accounts indicated he suffered a wound to the upper leg. Although, he lost an abundant amount of blood, there were promising signs on Monday evening. He was young and strong ….. I assumed he’d recover.

Sean Taylor’s death, in my opinion, is the “8th Biggest Story Of 2008.” However, let me be clear about this sad and heartwrenching event; there’s nothing sensational about it. It’s an incredibly tragic set of circumstances, and many lives have been irrevocably broken as a result of it.

For those of us who don’t live in the public spotlight or deal with the pressures that accompany fame and fortune, it may be difficult to understand the need for privacy and security. Sean Taylor was in HIS home and sleeping with HIS family. This incident appears to be totally unprovoked.

I mention this, because trouble has usually had no problem finding Sean Taylor, and he’s always been able to find it, too. His arrest record and personal reputation verifies his penchant for turmoil. Still, it appears he turned a corner in his life. Let’s remember ….. he was only 24 years old.

I was doing a lot of stupid things at that age ….. and beyond. The truth is this young man really hadn’t lived, yet. He had much more to experience. Parents should never bury their children. Not in a perfect and rightful world.

The investigation surrounding Sean Taylor’s death is ongoing. There are 4 suspects in custody. To speculate or assume any further would be unfair to families and friends. We’ll learn more in the coming months.

For now, we simply know a horrible thing has happened. Here’s to hoping nothing like this happens in 2008.
