Calvert Hall’s Robinson gets the start as Syracuse QB

August 19, 2007 | WNST Interns

On Wednesday, former Calvert Hall QB Andrew Robinson joined us on WNST for an interview. After just one week into August practice, Andrew was tabbed as the starting QB for Syracuse University by head coach Greg Robinson (no relation). He is only a second year sophomore and was one of four true freshmen to play last season. You could tell Andrew was very excited to earn the starting honor. His first order of business was to call his family in Baltimore and inform them of the news.

At Calvert Hall, under the direction of Jay Robinson (also no relation), Andrew passed for 4,846 career yards and 38 touchdowns. At a solid 6’2, 222 pounds, he can run. Although the Orange is currently utilizing the "West Coast" offense, the running ability of the QB plays a big role in the process. According to Andrew, his comments appear to reflect a feeling that in order to be successful, the "West Coast" style has to be a perfect balance while mixing in the pass. Ergo, we will get to see him do both.

The last time Syracuse had a winning record was 2001 (Dwight Freeney’s senior year). So when asked if his team would get back to playing in a bowl game, Andrew replied "Yes, we are good enough to surprise some people this year." You have to love his attitude. And if his teammates can follow his work ethic, they just might find an invite to one of those post-season bowls games. But the task won’t be an easy one given the rise of Big East Conference.

Andrew isn’t the only Baltimore/Washington player to dot the Syracuse roster. The local metro area has become quite a hotbed for recruits headed to play for this upstate NY school. Also pushing for reps at QB is Cameron Dantley from Silver Spring. His last name should be familiar to many of the locals here as his father is Adrian Dantley, a DeMatha H.S. grad who spent 16 years building an NBA legend. Below is a list I have compiled of players from this area currently suiting up for the Orange:

OG Ryan Bartholomew – Fr. – DeMatha HS
CB Quinton Brown – Sr. – Frederick Douglass HS
DE Cornelius Campbell – Sr. – DeMatha HS
QB Cameron Dantley – Jr. – St. Albans HS
