Fact vs Opinion Column

January 22, 2015 | Dennis Koulatsos

Fact: Marc Trestman will be Joe Flacco’s 4th offensive coordinator in 4 years. Flacco’s had Cam Cameron, Jim Caldwell and Gary Kubiak. The good news this time is that Trestman will run a similar offense with similar terminology as Kubiak.

Opinion: This actually helps John Harbaugh keep his message fresh. As strange as it sounds this type of turnover is good for a team, particularly when the head coach has been there for a long time. It’s a good reflection on Harbaugh that he can attract top coaching talent.

Fact: It’s been confirmed that the New England Patriots had 11 out of 12 balls under inflated.

Opinion: As egregious of an offense it was, it had no outcome on the 45-7 drubbing of the Colts. The bigger picture though is what else is this organization doing, and what has it done to gain competitive advantages in the past. The Patriots* risk having an asterisk attached to their name.

Fact: There was interest in Ray Rice by several teams, but none signed him when he became available during the 2014 season.

Opinion: Rice will be signed by a team this offseason. Front runners are the Colts, Saints, and Lions. Dark horses are the Broncos and the Raiders.

Fact: Jerruh Jones has not signed DeMarco Murray nor Dez Bryant to an extension, and both of their contracts are up.

Opinion: They Cowboys don’t have enough cap space to sign both. Due to the wear and tear of a 392 carry season, Murray is the most expendable. Unfortunately for him, backs aren’t valued the way they used to be, and can be relatively easily replaced.

Fact: Dennis Pitta’s hip has popped out of it’s socket without contact two times. The first time he went up for jump ball against James Ihedigbo and the second time of course he just stumbled and fell in the Cleveland game.

Opinion: I’ve talked to a couple of doctors who are also rabid Ravens fans, and they’ve surmised that Pitta must have a genetically shallow hip socket, and this is why his hip keeps popping out of it. Good player, better person. He should retire.

Fact: The Ravens will pick 26th in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Opinion: Although their philosophy is to take the best player available, you’d think this time it would be at a position of need. Defensive back is a position that “screams” need for the Ravens. As always, it will be interesting to see what they do.

Fact: There hasn’t been a dominant American heavyweight boxing champ in decades.

Opinion: The reason for this is that they’re all playing professional football or basketball. Can you imagine LeBron James or Jimmy Graham growing up as a trained boxer?

Fact: The Seattle Seahawks will play the New England Patriots February 1 in the Super Bowl.

Opinion: My early prediction is a 27 – 20 victory for the Hawks, with their defense being the difference maker.
