Maryland’s Johnson named Big Ten special teams player of the week

Following Big Ten football games on Oct. 6, the Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week and Freshman of the Week in the Big Ten were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Offensive Player of the Week
Dwayne Haskins, Ohio State
So., QB, Potomac, Md./Bullis School
• Completed 33 of 44 passes for 455 yards and six touchdowns in the victory over Indiana
• Became the first Big Ten quarterback in conference history to have three games with at least five touchdown passes in one season
• Tied school records with six touchdown passes and 33 completions, while finishing the game three yards shy of Art Schlichter’s 1978 school record of 458 passing yards
• Earns his fourth career Offensive Player of the Week award and third in as many weeks
• Last Ohio State Offensive Player of the Week: Dwayne Haskins (Oct. 1, 2018)

Defensive Player of the Week
Anthony Nelson, Iowa
Jr., DE, Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee
• Registered 3.0 tackles for loss in a victory at Minnesota
• Set a career high with three sacks for 19 yards in the contest
• Recorded five tackles in the contest, including four solo stops
• The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree receives his first career Defensive Player of the Week honor
• Last Iowa Defensive Player of the Week: A.J. Epenesa (Sept. 10, 2018)

Special Teams Player of the Week
Ty Johnson, Maryland
Sr., RB, Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill
• Scored the second kickoff return touchdown of his career with a 98-yard score against Michigan, giving Maryland a 7-3 lead in the first quarter
• Has recorded 3,935 career all-purpose yards as he looks to become just the fourth Terp to eclipse the 4,000 career all-purpose yardage mark, joining Torrey Smith (5,264), LaMont Jordan (4,960) and Stefon Diggs (4,106)
• Marked his first kickoff return touchdown since a 100-yard kickoff return at Ohio State in 2017
• Earns his second career Special Teams Player of the Week honor and first since 2017
• Last Maryland Special Teams Player of the Week: Ty Johndon (Oct. 9, 2017)

Freshman of the Week
Riley Moss, Iowa
Fr., DB, Ankeny, Iowa/Centennial

• Set career highs with five tackles and two interceptoins against Minnesota
• Made his first career start against the Gophers, becoming one of seven true freshman to start in the secondary in the Ferentz era
• Recorded four solo tackles in the contest
• Earns his first Freshman of the Week award
